Superstar Syndrome

The author's views are entirely his or her own and may not reflect the views of the Utah Jazz.

So I was reading some articles on ESPN.com today and I came across one that was talking about Melo and how he could be traded. Of course we’ve all known this for a while so I wasn’t really surprised at anything until i got to this line: “The Nuggets can do nothing to prevent the futures of Anthony, Chris Paul and Deron Williams – “I have a feeling he’s next for all these trade stories,” one Western Conference team official said of D-Will – from becoming the new season’s sidebar obsession to the actual basketball.” I hope you can all tell what surprised me in those few sentences.

Now this summer has been a crazy one for sure. With the King and the Raptor’s now ex-mascot heading to Miami and some other big names such as Boozer and Amare heading East. While all this summer has really done for the fans is give them more teams to hate and cheer against, I think there is something we should learn from this as Jazz fans. While I love D-Will and I believe that he does want to stay with the Jazz as long as they are willing to provide players who will play hard and strive to win a championship, I think we also must prepare ourselves for if he decides to take his talents elsewhere. If we can gain even just a little bit of knowledge from this free agent frenzy, it should be that loyalty just doesn’t mean as much to the players as it does the fans. Boozer and Korver left, why wouldn’t Williams?

Now before I get bashed by all my fellow Jazz/Williams lovers on here let me just say that I DO NOT THINK DERON WILLIAMS WILL LEAVE THE JAZZ AND HE WILL NOT DEMAND A TRADE. I just think that as Jazz fans we must prepare ourselves for the worst because as we have already seen a few times in the past week, Deron Williams’ name is going to pop up on trade rumors and the media is going to try and make it seem like he’s headed for Dallas in 2012. While I believe Deron is more Durant like rather than LeBron in the way he carries himself, who wouldn’t want to play for their home team?

Here’s the article, but the only part that even mentions Williams is in quotations above:

Once again: I DO NOT THINK DERON WILL LEAVE THE JAZZ VIA FREE AGENCY OR TRADE…just saying

I think Deron will stay as well. Unless we tank the next few seasons and do nothing about it. But I don’t see that happening either.

Plus with Ante Tomic probably coming over next season (2011), we will definately be ready to crush the Lakers. This year will be exciting to see how and what AJ does. And I do hope that AK has an amazing year with a few 5×5’s!

I think we all need to remember – Only one team wins the championship every year. There is a 28/29 chance that he will not win a championship every year, and I think most players realize that.

Now, I too feel like Deron will stay as long as the Jazz are doing everything they can to be competitive. Deron expressed his frustration this off season, and the Jazz went out and made some good moves to pick up AJ and Raja. It will be interesting to see if the Jazz manage to do anything else this off season. The team is hardly complete, but I think a lot of us (including Deron) are happy with what they have done so far.

I think we have one of the most complete teams in the league, and we’re miles ahead of Dallas in terms of prospects for the future. I know he hasn’t had any chance to return to living in his “home” state (home in quotes because he grew up there but was born in WV) since joining the NBA, but with the group of talent we have in place this doesn’t seem like the best time to jump ship. Sure, DWill is our superstar, but any team (other than theoretically the Lakers I guess) that would trade for him would have a significantly worse supporting cast than the Jazz. His best realistic chance to win is right here in EnergySolutions Arena.
