Meet
Earl Watson
Posted by: Andrew on October 17th, 2010
The author's views are entirely his or her own and may not reflect the views of the Utah Jazz.Having just seen numbers all preseason I had my doubts about him. Finally I got to see him in the Lakers game today and I have to say it just confirmed my doubts. If this is how he will play all season why are we even looking at others to be cut? He should have been cut already and then we just need to work out who else should go. There was a terrible stretch for the Jazz in the 3rd quarter today and most of it focused around Watson. Ronnie Price was awesome and showed without any doubt (to me atleast) that he is hands down the better backup pg. Sundiata should have got some time to prove that he is better then the garbage Watson produced for around 2 full quarters!
In summary, Earl Watson is D-League quality!!! Drop him!!! Drop Him!!! Drop Him NOW!!!

Watson has a guarenteed contract. He is also still learning the system, he’ll improve. Ronnie did look great tonight. I though Millsap had the worst game of anyone tonight. Odom OWNS him.
I agree whole heartedly. Watson is like Brevin Knight 2.0. It really pisses me off that he has a guaranteed contract. I would take Price or Gaines over Watson
have to disagree with you guys.
first of watson hasn’t done much for scoring, but he has done better on the assist/TO ratio.
second of all, he’s play for his life, he has a guarenteed contract…vets don’t play nearly as hard as the younger guys in the preseson. They pick it up when reg. season starts, just like Raja Bell.
patience, people.
wow I always mess up with my comments
****”he’s NOT playING for his life,”
I totally agree with Kyle. You just gotta give him some time to learn our style of play. Like everyone in the NBA says, the Utah Jazz have one of the most intricate and complex styles of play in the league. And obviously we can’t cut him because he has a guaranteed contract. I agree that he has not had the best of numbers, but I disagree that he had a terrible game against the Lakers. He might a been a main player in that stretch, but overall he got 6 assists in 24 minutes and only 1 turnover. I don’t think that’s bad at all.
You know what gets me, I want to know when our new boy, Gordon Hayward is going to show up. He hasn’t really done anything to jump out at you. HAHAHAHAHAHAHA
I hope you guys are right, but until Watson proves his worth I will not be able to help but be filled with that same sick feeling that I felt whenever Brevin Knight was on the floor, when Watson is in the game
@Kyle — I know, where’s the edit comment button??!
@Gerald — seriously! Where’s GH?!
Here’s the problem: We need a solid backup PG who can run the offense and not turn the ball over.
Our returning backup PG (Price) is a high-energy guy. He doesn’t run the offense well and he turns the ball over. On the flip side, he’s a more tenacious defender, much more athletic, and brings huge hustle to the game.
As I see it, Price is being pushed into a role that doesn’t quite suit his style of play. I think he’d be much better at SG depending on the match-up of the opposing team.
Sundiata has played pretty well as backup PG these preseason games. He’s a better and more confident shooter than Watson.
Watson is solid in handling the ball, running the offense, and limiting turnovers.
Honestly it’s a toss up. They are different, yes. If it were me, I’d keep them all, switch Price to backup SG and drop Nichols and Thompson.
Earl seemed to improve each game. The last game against the Clippers he had a lot of good play. I think he’s learning a lot with this offense as he goes. He does have the Brevin syndrome when I wish he’d take less shots then he does. Yet he’ll make the occasional driving lay up or floater and you start to question him again. Price has worked this system for quite some time now. He knows the players. He knows what he’as doing out there. That’s his advantage. Price is smart he plays pass first. He can shoot but if he’s not hot he knows to get others hot. My favorite part about Price is his defense. He bothers people and gets steals. I was hoping we’d see more of Price at the 2 in preseason and Earl and Gaines running point. Cause I agree with KCJones. He should play 2. Not always but most of the time. And I agree on Nichols and Thompson. Sign Gaines, Jeffers, and Evans.
Oh and Gerald… are you serious?
Maybe take a quick look at the box score from last nights game.

Where is Champ when you need him? I’m pretty sure he knows sarcasm when he reads it. He probably realizes that I wouldn’t be stupid enough (unlike some people that really do put those kinds of comments on here) to post something like that without checking out the last game the Jazz played. *Considering I watched the game anyway.* Oh you silly commentators.
lol Ger…I got that, if not your sarcastic laughter at the end should have given it away.
@KCJones…I could understand why you would think Ger was serious, but no way anyone says that without being sarcastic after last night. I’m sure it was aimed at the the Hayward haters out there.
Champ, I thought the sarcastic laughter at the end was a dead giveaway. Guess I was wrong. Who would have thought that, haha.
Overall, its not a big deal. I really was saying that because of the awesome performance that Hayward showed. Can’t wait until Tuesdays game.
I really don’t want to see Gaines get dropped. I want him to stay with the Jazz. I think he is very good for this team.
They thing that makes watson so useful is that he makes it possible for Deron and Ronnie to play some 2 depending on matchups. Ronnie does not make that possible. Watson has a steady hand and like many others have said when he gets the offense down things will come into place.
I hate the Alternet sometimes. I got Gerald’s sarcasm and was responding in kind. GH answered his questions last game, he looked great.
