Pick #47 – Kevin Murphy

Posted by: Adam on June 28th, 2012

The author's views are entirely his or her own and may not reflect the views of the Utah Jazz.

With the 47th pick in the 2012 NBA Draft, the Utah Jazz select Kevin Murphy, SG, Tennessee Tech. Kevin Murphy is a skinny offensive threat. 6′6″ and 195 pounds. He is quick and good off the ball. He is a shooter. Specifically a good 3 point shooter, shooting 41% from the field. Because of his size he is not a great finisher down low and he’s also not a great defender. Also being from a small school like Tennessee Tech, the transition to the NBA may be a tough one. With the nature of a pure shooter player, if his shot is off he is pretty much useless, but if his shot is on he can be a great bench player that can wedge his way into a Jazz rotation. Especially since the Jazz have no great shooters on our team. So he reminds me a lot of Kyle Korver and if he can play like Kyle Korver did, he could be a great steal in the draft. So not a bad choice for a mid-second round selection.

Your thoughts on Kevin Murphy?

He’s a scorer but it concerns me with the lack of PG skills our team has with an “undecided” Mo Williams.

Hopefully, we can snag Machado if he goes un-drafted. One thing is certain, Bell and/or Miles (hopefully both) are gone.

  2. Van says:

I like it, it the second you need to find players who do atleast one thing very well, and Murphy has range and can score.

He averaged almost 45% from three last year and has what scouts are calling a “sick” midrange game. Can’t hurt at this point, he cant brick more shots than Bell or Miles did anyways.

Bit of a toothpick though, probably needs some borrow some of Evans protein shakes.

  3. Jaron says:

By “not great defender” do you mean he’s a bad defender? That’s what I gathered, but the scouting report on him that I read said he knows his place on defense and praised him overall as a defender. Locke posted this link and I read it and came out quite excited about this pick.

It’s a low second rounder, so if he even cracks the rotation its a plus, but I think he has great upside, especially with his 3pt% and quick release as mentioned in the link I put up here. Here’s hoping

  4. Omar says:

Machado and Hollis Thompson!!!! Make it happen KOC.

  5. Jaron says:

Might I add calling him a toothpick is a little extreme. He’s no Jeremy Evans. 3 inches shorter and the same weight. He’s slightly thinner than Alec Burks.

  6. Browncoat says:

    Umm, burks is 6′5″ 195 lbs…

  7. Omar says:

    Favors, Kanter
    Millsap, (Ilyasova) Evans
    Carroll, (Hollis Thompson)
    Hayward, Murphy
    Burks, Harris, (Machado)

  8. Guido says:

mmmmmm i dont know this kid, but numbers represent exactly what Jazz need. I dont think that is an stupid pick, in fact I dont expect nothing else at 47. So, great work KOC.
And 47 is a great Jazz number dont forget that… AK-47, Milly and the new guy…. they call Mo I listen
    Peace.

  9. Jaron says:

@browncoat NBA.com has Burks as 6′6 202 that was my source. You are the first person I have heard say he’s 6′5″ but thanks for making me sound ignorant for such a small difference of opinion in the first place

  10. Kevin Martin Jr.

  11. KCJones says:

    Burks is actually 6′-5 1/2″ and 197 lbs…so…

Anyway, a decent pick it sounds like, even though I hadn’t heard of him til today.

Here’s a question: Assuming Mo Williams opts in and the trade is for real, would you want Watson, Tinsley, or Scott Machado as our third PG?

  12. Jaron says:

Holy splitting hairs dude. So this dude is 6′6 1/2″ and 195 burks is 6′5 1/2″ 197. But I was way off in saying he’s slightly thinner than Burks. Its all about different sources man who cares? Anyway Let’s get machado to see if he can develop ino a number 2 pg for years.

  13. Omar says:

I really, really, really hope Tinsley gets on Corbins staff.

    Trading Block:
    1. Bell
    2. Bell
    3. Bell
    4. Watson
    5. Al

Someone needs to do a clip show of CJ before hes gone. Hes like that friend you have whi is a good dude but is always fumbled things up.

Machado, Hollis Thompson, Simm, a lot if good players out thete. Hope to wake up to some good news.

I like the Kevin Martin comparison @Dallan. Jazz might have the best SL team.

  14. Jaron says:

By the way KC when you measured and weighed Burks this morning did you make sure he had his shoes off and took all the stuff out of his pockets? :D jokes man my bad I will make sure and get my measuring tape and scale checked out.

  15. Van says:

Adi Joseph at USA today had this to say about Utahs pick:

“Murphy, a high-scoring guard with a great shot and good handles, was the best player on the board. He could be a nice compliment to Alec Burks, last year’s first-rounder, at shooting guard. It’s not easy to get a viable contributor this late, so this pick deserves praise. Grade: A”

  16. Jaron says:

Oh wow. I think you’d fit in better there talking like that. Have a nice night.

  17. XxHawsxX says:

For all the people baggin’ on Murphy (myself included at first)!!!!

The dude weighs 185 pounds but was putting up 300 lbs bench press. He’s gotta chip on his shoulder

  18. Arne says:

I still dread the day I might see “Jazz re-signs SF CJ Miles”.

Please give our young guys playing experience. I don’t expect a championship run out of them this year, I just want to see effort and improvement.

  19. disco says:

I’m starting to think the Jazz Front office are happy with mediocrity. They seem to be too focused on doing okay now rather than doing well in the future.

  20. Browncoat says:

@Jaron – I wasn’t trying to be snippy, I was looking at draftexpress.com myself. I thought comparing pre draft measurements would be better. No matter he seems to have a really nice shooting motion and hopefully he becomes a solid player.

  21. KCJones says:

    fa·ce·tious /fəˈsēSHəs/

    Adjective:
Treating serious issues with deliberately inappropriate humor; flippant.
    Synonyms:
    jocose – humorous – jocular – waggish – comic – funny

I was trying to ‘lighten’ the argument you guys were having by being ‘facetious’ in regards to who the hell cares about a 5-lb or 1-inch difference. Oh well…

So how do we nab Machado and get rid of Watson and Tinsley?

  22. Machado and Tinsley are similar in the fact that neither of them are looking to score as a 3rd option PG. Tinsley is a crafty, tough, controlled old school type of player that also adds leadership as does Watson. I just like the idea of Machado setting up plays for a talented 2nd unit and seeing if he develops into a better player that Watson or Tinsley over time….who knows atbthis point. It really depends whether or not Harris and Mo can coexist. I wouldn’t be surprised if Harris is still used as trade material

  23. Dave801 says:

Watson will be our third… if not for any other reason than he is the one with a guaranteed contract.

  24. Chris says:

It’s frustrating to me that we took Murphy instead of taking Kostas Papanikolaou who went with the very next pick. Terrible mistake imo.

  25. L.K.Anderson says:

Sounds like “Murph” is already better than CJ. If he is that good of a shooter lets hope soon his nickname will be “The Dagger.”

  26. Adam says:

@Chris- I would’ve liked Papanikolaou. No, I don’t know anything about him, but I do know that his name is way fun to say
