The Coin Flip of the Century

Ok, maybe its an exaggeration to say its the coin flip of the century, but the Jazz have certainly gotten themselves stuck in an interesting situation. This upcoming draft is a very deep draft and the Jazz could really benefit from a pick in it. In fact, there was a possibility that they would have two picks in the lottery. However, both picks had conditions on them. We owned the Warriors pick, but it was top 7 protected. The T-Wolves owned our pick, but it was lottery protected. So if we were to miss the playoffs and the Warriors were to get 8th place or better, we get both. However, since we made the playoffs, we gave our pick to the T-Wolves, which I am perfectly fine with actually. Our young team can really benefit from some playoff experience, even if it is a sweep by the Spurs, but y’all can debate that below if you disagree. As far as our Warriors pick, the Warriors finished in 7th place exactly. But the thing is, so did the Raptors. So there will be a coin flip to see who gets that pick. If the Raptors win, we keep the pick. If the Warriors win, we lose the pick and end up with no draft picks in this year’s lottery. Yikes!!! And as a side note, I also read that if that pick ends up 8th and goes to us, we will lose it to the Warriors if that pick wins the lottery. I know there has been some confusion as far as that goes, so I thought I would mention it. Cross your fingers y’all!!! We really need a pick in this draft!!

  1. I think of the pick we lost to Minnesota this way, would you rather try to become a millionaire by hard work, learning from mistakes, and having a stable job with plenty of room for advancement, or sell everything you hav already worked for, take that money to Vegas, and put it on one square in roulette? While the other has an instant awesome reward, it is still a gamble and you could end up with nothing.

We have had some great picks scouted by koc but it’s a sure thing that this playoff experience will benefit our team in the long run!

Let us hope karma will catch up with the tanking warriors and reward the jazz who fought hard, never gave up, and made the playoffs!

I thought they were flipping the coin at noon today?

  3. How long does it take to throw a coin in the air?

bleh word is that Golden State won the flip and is in the 7th spot heading into the lottery. So let’s all hope and pray to the basketball gods that someone leapfrogs them from behind and puts them in 8th

  6. KCJones says:

Despite me cheering for them wildly last night to beat the Spurs’ scrubs, and for their previous 10-15 games, I hate Golden State.

  7. How often in the last ten years has a team in th 8th spot or lower, heading into the lottery, moved up?

That’s homework for somebody besides me to figure out.

  8. KCJones says:

Just need to figure out how many winners there were in spots 8-14 that won a 1, 2 or 3 spot.

  9. I’m so upset, I’m just going to say it…Mark Jackson looks like Yoda (it must be his ears).

  10. Zach says:

I guess cheaters do prosper. Kanter and Burks might have been the last lotto picks we have for quite some time. I hate the Warriors much more than the Lakers right now. This could have been the pick that pushed us over the hump in years to come. Such a deep draft… The pick is worthless next year. And I spent so much time doing my pre-draft research. This just really really sucks…

  11. Omar says:

Hope GSW falls in love with a player….then bam! They sont even get a pick. We has the luck last year, we had the Easter Day Miracle, I can totally see someone jumping I think its 3 teams 8 or higher that won the lottery.

  12. Omar says:

    2011: 8
    2008: 9
    2001: 8

  13. KCJones says:

We still have a 37.5% chance! that’s slightly better than 1 in 3…

  14. Omar says:

If the jazz really believe next years draft is going to be pretty weak in conjunction with GSW being decent, Id talk to the Rockets, they have the 14th and the 16th pick this year. Trade next years GSW first and Jazz next year first, thrown in Bell, or some combination. K. Marshall might be there at 14.

The better the jazz do in playoffs the less this will sting.

  15. It would be nice to get the pick, but it’s not the end of the world. Players like Davis, Robinson, Drummond, Barnes, Beal, and Kidd Gilchrist will all be off the board before the 8th pick anyway.

Even if we end up with it, the caliber of player your looking at would be someone like Sullinger, Marshall, Lillard, Lamb, Rivers, P. Jones, or Zeller. I can’t see one of those guys being a “star” type player. Nice players, yes…but most likely not stars.

You need a top five or six pick in this draft, to get a guy who can take your team to another level. With the protected pick, we have no shot at any of those guys, without making a trade.

  16. JRN5150 says:

Well, now that we only have pick 47… lets pray that John Jenkins from Vandy falls to us there. That kid is straight up money. I dont want a second round PG. We should take care of that in Free Agency. Jenkins is the best shooter in the draft hands down. Look at San Antonio for example. How many of their wing players have you heard of in your life? I am guessing not more than 2 or 3. The rest are unknowns that can shoot lights out. Put in a star or two and a role player of a big and you have a championship team!

  17. I really like Jenkins. I would be astonished if he lasted until the 47th pick though. I think he goes late first/early second round.

  18. At this point, this draft is pretty much a bust for the Jazz. KOC might have to work some more magic.

  19. French Dude says:

ok so if i sum up well, NY win, Dallas win over us minnesUtah, LAC win, LAL win, Chicago win, and of course GSW win…….
Who said a coin flip is a 50-50 chance when you have King David and his precious big markets in the middle……

  20. L.K.Anderson says:

    @KC: Didn’t last years Jazz #8 move up to # 3??

  21. L.K.Anderson says:

OOps I think the Jazz were # 6 last year. Anyway the Bulls were either 8 or 9 when the move up to #1 to get Rose..But it is now down to the last possible chance May 30th..

  22. KCJones says:

I meant 27.5% chance sorry. Bastard Warriors. The Karma gods WILL punish them. The Curry-Bogut duo will become the Warrior analogue to Portland’s Roy-Oden fiasco, mark my words!
