Jazz sign Francisco Elson

The author's views are entirely his or her own and may not reflect the views of the Utah Jazz.

The Jazz have signed Fancisco Elson to a guaranteed contract. This is all according to the the tribjazz on twitter.

http://twitter.com/tribjazz

His agent told the Trib that he may be 34 years old, but he has a 28 year old body.

It should be interesting how he fares for the Jazz. The tribjazz said he should be competing for about 10-15 minutes a night. All in all this isn’t a terrible signing. Elson is a seven footer and brings a bit of experience. It seems he and his agent are convinced he’s still got some game left. The terms have not been disclosed, but I wouldn’t imagine it’s any more than the vet’s min for a year and player option or something.

Also in other news SLC Dunk posted something about Big Fes being back in Salt Lake now. He embedded the Facebook post that Fes put up. So this might mean he is coming back to really start working on the contract and plan on suiting up for the Jazz this year. Hopefully all goes well with that. Fes really might be some help for us with some playing time and continued growth. Plus who else would make us laugh in the postgame locker room interviews. Maybe Deron can make fun of Steve Brown’s ties more often.

I was just going to write a post about Elson, checked this site to make sure there wasn’t one already. Got distracted went to write again and thought I’d better double check.
    I’m glad I did.
I am excited about this signing. Its nothing huge but it will be nice to have another big especially with the uncertainty of when Memo will be back.
I imagine a lot of fans also are glad that its a sure sign that we wont’ resign Jarron Collins!

    Good, it’ll help. Good news.

  3. Justin says:

    I like this better than
Fes. Let’s see what they do next

  4. Diana says:

@Justin. I think there is still a good chance that Fess will be with the Jazz this season.
They made the qualifying offer right. When does he have to sign that by?

  5. A decent signing. I like his veteran experience more then anything.

  6. Marcus says:

The only way this is a good signing is if the team did their homework and got at least a 60% elson from the spurs a couple of years ago… otherewise we are getting jarron collins. but KOC always does his homework. so we should be ok

  7. Andrew says:

Sweet, He’s quick , great around the rim, and moves great away from the ball. Plus he’s a 7 footer that is much better than Fes.

  8. Adam says:

The more big men the merrier! The more big bodies that we can put into the paint and can pull in 5-10 points per game, the better, especially if (or most people will probably say when) we play the Lakers in the playoffs. I say bring in Fes and Elson. Maybe Elson will find a new person within himself with the help of Deron and the others. Maybe Fes will learn what to do on defense and what he shouldn’t do on offense. Maybe a long shot, but, there’s a chance we can get lucky!

  9. Fan says:

Happy to see the signing of Elson. It is my understanding that Fes has a qualifying offer by the Jazz, will the signing of Elson make it more or less ilkely he will sign or is he waiting til the last minute to see if any other offers come his way.

  10. Justin says:

Diana – Not sure on the qualifying offer for Fes. I would like to see Fes back as a last resort. I think we all saw him show signs of a decent player, but then there were moments he couldn’t even catch a ball. Also, he just doesn’t take the game seriously (which is too bad).

I like this Francisco pick up. Nice surprise…

  11. Justin says:

Fes’ best option is to wait and see if he can make more money somewhere else, especially now that we will sign Fransisco (can catch, lay up, and dunk the ball).

Happy to get Fes back too.

What other prospects are out there for the Jazz?

  12. me personally i would much rather have Fez than Elson. for one Elson is old you never know whats going to happen to a player when he gets older then 30 and, also he doesn’t have the size that Fez has you put Fez in the center it’s filled up no one got in there when we played Denver this last season. I say give Fez a legit chance to show what he can do instead of drop him without giving him a oppertunity to prove him self. I’m sure a few of you think he have been given that chance but, honestly look at the situtation he came in on he can’t have a far shot being benched all year and MEMO goes down in the playoffs and you throw him into that atmosphere. let Fez play this season and see if he can prove himself and turn into the player he can be. bad move on gettin Elson if it’s true

  13. Nathan says:

The best thing about signing Elson:

His career high for points in a single game is 21 against the deplorable LA Lakers. I would love nothing more than to see Jefferson and Elson go into LA and rough things up REAL GOOD.

So the bigs Utah theoretically now has are:

    Al Jefferson (6-10)
    Mehmet Okur (6-11)
    Francisco Elson (7-0)
    Kyrylo Fesenko (7-1)

They may not be the best bigs in the game(barring Jefferson) but at least we have big bodies to clog the paint, and with any luck Okur will be healthy enough to come back midway through the season, bringing that sweet 3-point shot with him. No more trying to take someone off the dribble. Utah needs his 3-point shot to help spread the floor and open up the paint. I have confidence that Sloan will get the most he can out of Elson.

  14. Ray says:

I’m OK with Elson. He’ll be a short-term solution at his age. Still wish the Jazz would go for Earl Barron—a younger body with potential. Barron seems to have more upside than Fes.

    Let the games begin.

  15. Adam says:

When is this going to be made final? I believe what you’ve said, but I’m getting no official announcement from NBA.com or UtahJazz.com. When is this going to happen? Love the move. Elson is 7′0″ tall and even though he is old, he brings height to the Jazz and experience to help out our young big men. He is a great short term solution while we wait for Tomic to jump aboard or until we have the means of signing another good center next offseason or something like that.

  16. UMMMM has any body seen this mans stats from last season? honestly 1 piont pergame and 1.5 rebounds, he is suppose to be a fixthat doesn’t sound like to great of a fix there to me Fez put up better number then that.

  17. Tyler says:

adam he has to pass the physical, which im not sure when that is, but then we will get an official statement. Trevor its up to fes on whether to come back to us. we are giving him a legit chance and i believe they will both battle for the backup spot.(assuming fes signs)

  18. Andrew says:

@ Trevor He had limited minutes with only 12 games (I believe he was released form his contract in Milwaukee.)
Look at his stats with SAS and Denver. That’s what looks great, Starting 95 games with the 2 teams. That’s what I’m looking at him doing, Clog the Lane, get around 8 pts and 8 rebounds per game.
If he can put that up We’ll be able to go even further into the playoffs, WCF or even Finals if we play extremely solid all season and playoffs.

  19. I think if you gave fez 18 to 22 minutes a game. Which is what a regualr back up gets he could do that if not more. That deal was a seasons ago as well a lot can change in a year that’s why i went by those stats i sent you. Because even if he only played in 12 games and wasn’t on the court hardly at all that is still what he did and, it wasn’t much. the jazz have a great team now they barely have any money in the cap why try to make any more moves then what you have to?

  20. Andrew says:

Fes is only 2.6 ppg and 1.8rpg.. Not much better but he did play the whole season + playoffs.

The big difference is that Elson can actually catch a ball where is Fes fumbles it 90% of the time. Elson can also run, ally-oop dunk, Pass, somewhat shoot, Move great without the ball and play defense without accruing 5 fouls in 5 minutes.

    He can play, Fes can’t.

  21. Andrew says:

After reading my post I sound really “Anti-Fes”. I’m not. Fes showed some his true potential against Denver but than showed us why he has had limited minutes for the past few years against LAL.

Fes is funny and does clog the lane and could be a great player if he would work at it. Elson will more than likely only be here for 1 year, Mainly because Ante Tomic will be (hopefully) coming over next year.

With Memo being out, Fes will still get some minutes to gain more experience and confidence.

  22. Kalab says:

I think the best case scenerio here is getting both Elson and Fes into the roster. I am reading a lot of focused comments about offensive production which is always sweet, but ultimatly the jazz are hurting for defense and that is where both of these guys will shine. Two 7′ reserves will be awesome for holding the oposing teams down while starters get needed rest. This is a very good move by the Jazz. Now if Fez will get on with his signing we will be in great shape. Seriously what is he waiting for? Does he think he is the next King James or something?

  23. Colby says:

Meh….I guess it’s ok while we wait for Tomic.

  24. we had ttwo & footer last season riding the bench. Wtih Kosta and fez, just because your tall and, show potential Jerry wont let you play I think with tomic coming in next year hopefully and fez, showing potential in the playoffs why would you even try for anther big man? Fez had two pionts and two rebounds per game in what the 5 mintues he got in for but, when the play offs came aroung he showed me a lot when he actually got some time i know 3 pionts and 3 rebounds don’t look good on paper but, at least he knows his position wich i can’t say the same for other bigs we have on are team. So i say the heck with Elson we have Tomic coming up and Fez now

  25. Chris says:

I really hope that Tomic is the saving grace that almost all Jazz Fans are expecting him to be. If not, were all going to be really dissapointed. The guy is not even here yet, but everyone seems to think he is the Redeemer of the Jazz.

  26. see I think he is goin to be good but, super star is pushing it i think the redeemer for the jazz is Al with Dwill that’s a very mean combo in a jazz system. Tomic will be good for blocks and, rebounds though im hoping
