Emerging Jazz: 2012-2013 Line-up

Posted by: Arnell on March 11th, 2012

The author's views are entirely his or her own and may not reflect the views of the Utah Jazz.

If one should dream for an ideal 2012-2013 Utah Jazz line-up, why not dream BIG.

So, everyone, please share your thoughts on this projected 14-line up with the hope that KOC will take a page out of this (from the Jazz Fans) suggestion.

(PG) Gordon Hayward / 2012 Draftee (6′4″ 180 lbs Kendal Marshall, North Carolina)
(SG) Alec Burks / 2012 Draftee (6′7″ Doug McDermott, Creighton)
(SF) Wilson Chandler / DeMarre Carroll / 2012 Draftee (6′9″ Quincy Miller, Baylor)
(PF) Derrick Favors / Jeremy Evans / James Augustine
 (C) Roy Hibbert / Enes Kanter / Ante Tomic / 2012 Draftee (6′11″ 251 lbs Andre Drummond, UConn)

Kendal Marshall – see, http://www.draftexpress.com/profile/Kendall-Marshall-5095/ (But if John Stockton okay’s to draft Bradley Beal instead – I am totally agreable to convert this 6′4″ 201 lbs SG from Florida into a Scoring PG for the Jazz like DWill. See, http://www.draftexpress.com/profile/Bradley-Beal-5759/ )

Doug McDermott  (if he declares in 2012 Draft) – see, http://www.draftexpress.com/profile/Doug-McDermott-6504/ - a sharpshooter, crafty and a winner , coach’s son like Jeff Hornacek.  We need a Baller in this position. Him and Gordon Hayward can certainly make this SG position significant by bringing toughness in their defense as well as their offensive production. Jae Crowder of Marquette (http://www.draftexpress.com/profile/Jae-Crowder-10084/ ) or Kris Joseph of Syracuse ( http://www.draftexpress.com/profile/Kris-Joseph-5837/ ) may also fit on this bill.

Quincy Miller – see, http://www.draftexpress.com/profile/Quincy-Miller-5764/

Andre Drummond - see,  http://www.draftexpress.com/profile/Andre-Drummond-5772/

Assumptions:
1)  following on @LK Anderson’s suggestion, I agree to make Gordon Hayward as our PG where he is going to be more effective with the ball on his hands – and, be chosen to be the Team’s Captain;

2) Paul Millsap got traded for either a SF and a young back-up PG or two (2) Draft picks or a TPE (unless he converts himself into a SF, my preference, in the likes of Melo & LeBron which is possible if he wants to);
2) Jazz used its Memo TPE and acquired Indiana’s Center Roy Hibbert in the free agency market;
3) Jazz also acquired another free agent from Denver Nuggets SF in Wilson Chandler;
4) Josh Howard demanded too much monies and got traded (otherwise, him and Wilson Chandler will man the SF position);
5) Jazz finally brought back James Augustine (6′10, PF) who was with the Jazz training camp a few years back and been making a name in Euro-League. Inexpensive acquisition. See: http://basketball.realgm.com/player/James_Augustine/Summary/104;
6) Jazz finally brought in their 2008 NBA Draft pick (#14, Round 2) who has been playing in Euro-League. See: http://basketball.realgm.com/player/Ante_Tomic/Summary/811

7) and, Jazz traded Al Jefferson to this year’s bottom team and received a TPE or swapped with said team’s 2012 Draft Right to the young athletic UConn Center  Andre Drummond (6′11″, 251 lbs). See: http://www.draftexpress.com/profile/Andre-Drummond-5772/ . He will be sent to the D-League to further develop his much needed NBA Skills. (if not, I will be happy to keep Al Jefferson to man the Center)

Please let me know what  your thoughts are (for -or- against) ;}

  1. YOU ARE CLEARLY AN IDIOT THAT KNOWS NOTHING ABOUT THE GAME OF BASKETBALL.

  2. Zach says:

    Gordon Hayward as our #1 PG? Drummond? I won’t say any more.

  3. That’s pretty creative thinking. I do think it is unrealistic, but is good food for thought. If they get Kendall Marshall, the Burks/Hayward positioning is going to be interesting, especially if they draft a good SF, also. I would like to see them make a major trade of one of our veteran “Bigs” to get another lottery pick. We would be set for many years to come.

  4. TACOREV says:

    Tomic will never play for the Jazz. And I’ll just pretend like I didn’t see you put Hayward as PG

  5. Arnell says:

    FYI: Both @LK Anderson and @LockedonJazz are in agreement that Gordon Hayward is best effective when he has the ball on his hands (Hayward was a PG in HS and played Point Forward/Guard in College) – so it is not far fetched that he can handle the ball and make plays (as evidenced by his current APG records lately). Having Hayward (6′8″) and Alec Burks (6′6″) in manning the Jazz backcourt will be similar to what the Sixers are currently doing in Evan Turner (6′7″) & Jrue Holiday (6′4″) in their backcourt – which evidently have worked well recently.

  6. Hayward can’t keep up the with speed of an nba point there is a big difference between playing point in high and playing point in the nba. The whole game is different and, being a point forward isn’t playing point gaurd. James may bring theball up some times for the heat but, he doesn’t play pg. Hayward can be a point forward butm not a pg there is a big difference.

  7. KCJones says:

    Wilson Chandler is a restricted free agent.
    Roy Hibbert is a restricted free agent.

    The Utah Jazz aren’t under the salary cap. Which means they could offer the mid-level exception as the MAX offer. That’s $5M dollars. You really think Denver and the Pacers would be so stupid as to NOT match a $5M offer for either of those players? Not to mention all the other teams that ARE under the cap that could offer more and outbid the Jazz.

    So here’s a logic problem for you: If this post is based on those assumptions, and those assumptions are ridiculously stupid, what does that make this post?

  8. Here is the thing with Hayward playing the PG we would still keep Harris on the floor just like Philly keeps Jrue Holliday on the floor. Harris would continue to guard the smaller PG but Hayward could keep up with everyone else minus the quick guards which there are only about 6 or 7 legitimate in the league that he could not keep up with. That is when Harris steps in to guard them.

    I am not saying on defense and then you leave the liability of smaller units torching us with their speed like GS. BUT!! Hayward ran exactly what I am saying in H.S. and in College and was very effective.

    We saw how it could be ran when we played Philadelphia. So it can work and Evan Turner is big as well so he can not guard the smaller guards but that is why they leave the smaller guard on the floor to guard them.

    @KC we are also losing contracts off of our books this year so we could go after those free agents.. BUT we will not because if we are going to get a center we would probably just draft one instead of taking on in free agency to play over our young guys.

  9. KCJones says:

    We’re losing Miles ($4M), Howard ($2M) and Tinsley ($1M). Evans becomes a Restricted Free Agent. Jeremy Evans will probably get a qualifying offer that will count against the cap from the Jazz and may be inflated if Portland offers him a contract (I’d put money on it). Even without Evans in there, we’re losing 3 players and $6M off the books, and we’re right at the cap right now. All our rookies will make more money next year as will a few vets….See where I’m going with this? Unless we trade away players for nothing before the deadline, or cut or amnesty players, we’re looking at a max of about $5M we can offer any free agent in the offseason. Also, two lottery draft picks will eat up that cap space. Which means we’re back to exceptions, the largest of which is the $5M mid-level exception.

  10. I don’t think we are losing howard miles is gone for sure but, howard stays and, I think if tinsley will takd a league minimum offer he will stay as well. Watson and, jamal are great vets to teach a rookie the pg position so both are good to have in your system. Coach is high on howard and, so am I he is one of are leaders out on the court and hussles more then half are team. He also wants to stay in utah so that plays a big part of it. If you ask me harris is gone bell, cj and, sap is gone this off season. There have been to many rumors buzzing about harris all years bell is getting old and we need time for burks cj has had many chances to play here never produced and, sap needs to be moved to get time for favors and kanter. Then we go out draft a pg maybe bring in a free agent or two, get ak back solid defender wants to be in utah if he comes back to the nba and, can pick him up for a decnt price. You would have a decent team for next season

  11. Arnell says:

    @KJ Jones: The scenario of my proposal is for season 2012-2013, if in case you haven’t noticed – where Hibbert & Chandler becomes Free Agents.

    Secondly, on this article http://www.nba.com/2012/news/03/12/jazz-bell.ap/index.html?ls=iref:nbahpt2 – it specifies that the “Jazz have plenty of flexibility under the cap”. This might have skipped your expert mind.

    Lastly, the Jazz have the Okur TPE that they can use to acquire Roy Hibbert (am not so sure on this, but it might allow them to go over 20% more above it too). And, the monies to acquire Wilson Chandler will be the TPE from trading Millsap.

    @Everyone: Thank you for indulging me in this discussion. Your perspective is much appreciated.

  12. L.K.Anderson says:

    I would bet CJ’S last dollar that Hibbert will be kept on their team. He is too good to let go. In four days we can have a peaceful no trade comments.

  13. KCJones says:

    @Arnell – Hibbert and Chandler will be RESTRICTED free agents the summer before 2012-2013:

    http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?page=FreeAgents-12-13

    This means their teams give them a qualifying offer sheet. Then other teams give them offer sheets, or potential contracts. The players can then choose to sign one of these offer sheets. Then their original teams have the right to match that offer and keep them for that same contract price (like the Jazz did for Millsap — they’re paying him based on Portland’s offer sheet). Or they can choose not to and let them go (like the Jazz did for Matthews – we chose not to match Portland’s ridiculously high offer). Usually the offer is a multi-year new deal, which means its another 3+ years until those players actually become unrestricted free agents.

    As far as the Jazz cap situation, its way better than it WAS, but we’re sitting right at the cap right now with our payroll:

    http://www.hoopsworld.com/utah-jazz-team-salary

    So, with 9 players under contract, and assuming we renounce the bird rights to Miles, Evans, Tinsley and Howard this offseason we would still be only $3M under the $56M salary cap. Now you add in the salaries of two lottery picks ($2-$5M each) and a 2nd-round pick and you’re looking at being right back where we are right now, right at the salary cap. Which means we can only use exceptions to sign free agents (or give an offer sheet to a restricted free agent). The max we could offer is $5M, via the mid-level exception. A team UNDER the cap, by say, $10M, could offer $10M. So not only are the Jazz going to be outbid by teams under the cap, but the Nuggets and Pacers will most likely match the offers and keep Chandler and Hibbert.

    Hence, why your proposition is ridiculous.

    The Jazz would have to make additional moves to free up cap space if their plan was to try to try to sign an expensive free agent. Waiving players, amnestying players, trading players for other players with lesser contracts (or for 2nd-round picks), etc.

    Historically, the Jazz don’t fare well in the big-name free agent market, so I would highly doubt they do any of the above-mentioned cap-clearing moves.

    Then, on to traded player exceptions. TPEs are ONLY good for teams wanting to get rid of contracts they don’t want. Basically the other team gets NOTHING back, except cash or draft picks along with the TPE. Jefferson was behind Love and had a big contract. Wolves decided to give up Jefferson so Love could be the guy, and were highly criticized they didn’t trade Jefferson for a good player in return. So you’re thinking Denver and the Pacers are just itching to get rid of Hibbert and Chandler for nothing in return? Also ridiculous.

    If you don’t know how the salary cap / luxury tax / CBA works, it makes it hard to post realistic, useful suggestions.

    Not trying to be harsh, just trying to educate a bit.

  14. Steve says:

    hayward as a starting pg is a joke… drummond?? No way…
    Kendall Marshall Hell YES!! haha
    Put marshall on this team and we are instantly better! He is the purest PG, and that is what we need here, a pure PG! Thats why guys like watson are successful here, all he does is get his teammates in position to score! Deron did it, stock did it. Marshall will do it.

  15. L.K.Anderson says:

    @Arnell: Check out Larry Coon on Hoopsworld.com. He is the contract expert. When he has his chat you can also ask him questions. Every question asked he has the answer for it. A lot of other fans have suggested we use the amnesty. The deadline for the use of that was a couple of months ago. Each season has the same rule.
