Mychel Thompson (SF/SG)

Posted by: Arnell on February 9th, 2012

The author's views are entirely his or her own and may not reflect the views of the Utah Jazz.

I just would like to call the attention of the JazzNation about this kid. Mychel won’t turn 24 until June 1st. He is 6′7″,  at 215 lbs whose younger brother Klay was Golden State’s pick in 2011. Mychel was undrafted but both has a very good pedigree of  their father, Mychal Thompson, who was a first round NBA pick and won two Championships with the Los Angeles Lakers.

Mychel was recently waived by the Cleveland Cavaliers and could be an inexpensive acquisition.

Please check on the following links and share us your thoughts of him. Thanks !

  1. Hmmm.

In 5 games in the NBA, he has shot 6-24 (29%), 4-11 from 3, and averaged 3 points, 1 rebound, and 1 assist per game.

    No thanks.

Keep digging though, Arnell, hopefully you’ll find a guard that can shoot the basketball for us.

  2. Oh also. He’s a Forward who is 6 foot 6 and weighs 211 pounds. Cant shoot, certainly can’t post up.

I’m beginning to think Arnell is an undrafted player agent, lol

  3. 6′6 211 isn’t that small nick it is smaller but, not crazy small. I think he would be good but, we have 3isn’t or 4 project players on the team we don’t need anther one. Favors, burks, kanter, hayward, and now carrol. We don’t need anther project or mystery player. Get some one more proven.

  4. If you get anyone the roster is pretty full right now

  5. Zach says:

We need shooting and PG play, not this. Arnell is the same guy that has advocated picking up Festinko again on multiple occasions.

  6. L.K.Anderson says:

@Zach: Thank you. You made my day with that Festinko comment.

  7. Dj Bracken says:

Thanks for the post arnell. Keep em coming. By the way Nick, 5 games isn’t a large enough sample size to determine if he can shoot or be effective. Take millsap’s last five games. Would you judge him on just that? I’m by no means suggesting this kid could be anything even close to Millsap, I’m just saying he could be better than that five game stint suggests.

  8. Dj, you’re right, 5 games as a rookie in the NBA isn’t anywhere near enough time to judge a player. My point was, this guy is not worth picking up, even if we WERE looking for another forward.

We are completely stacked at the forward position. We have at least 6 guys capable of playing forward (sap, faves, evans, miles, hayward, AND this new guy we just signed). Why on earth would we draft another one? We need perimeter shooters and distributors so bad it hurts.

Like Trevor said, our roster is full of rookies and project players. This guy would be a terrible idea.

Mychel Thompson has a pedigree and am sensing that he has that same fire from within him. He certainly has proven to be a scoring machine while in College (Pepperdine) – though not as much heralded as his younger brother Klay (Washington), and now undrafted & waived by Cleveland – so, he will be inexpensive to acquire and develop to suit the Jazz system. Even Coach Byron Scott said that he has a good handle of the ball as well as in defense. The kid will just need time to get seasoned. (You guys send me a tweet once he has been picked up by another team and contribute – if not explode to the limelight).

Another thing, Ben Uzoh (my other Undrafted protege’) has just been picked up by Cleveland Cavaliers as their future PG – probabably sensing a coming trade of Ramon Sessions (hopefully to the Jazz?).

    Go Jazz!

  10. Zach says:

Arnell, I doubt the Cavs would pick up Uzoh as their “future PG” considering they just drafted someone named KYRIE IRVING! Kyrie’s averaging 18 ppg, 5 apg, 49% FG, 41% 3-pt. He’s the best rookie and already one of the best PGs in the league. Most talent in the NBA is acquired through the draft and long-term development. Guys like Wes Matthews and Jeremy Lin do not grow on trees. If these guys you keep saying are or will be great and would make the perfect addition are what you say they are, they’d probably be on a team!
