Trading Millsap & KOC’s possible moves

Posted by: Arnell on March 1st, 2012

The author's views are entirely his or her own and may not reflect the views of the Utah Jazz.

With the way how Derrick Favors (PF/C) blended well with Al Jefferson (C/PF) defensively on Jazz win against the Houston Rockets last night, it is very obvious that Millsap becomes expendible. Therefore, I totally agree with @KCJones suggestion to trade Paul Millsap to allow Favors continued development. Enes Kanter will sub as Center and Jeremy Evans will sub as PF – for their continued development.

If so, in return, let us hope that KOC is able to get us either a known-effective SF & and PG, or a Trade Exception and a 2012 First round pick.

Secondly, I am also hoping that KOC is able to get us Wilson Chandler (SF, 6′8, 210 lbs, only 24 yrs old) who is currently a restricted Free Agent of the Denver Nuggets and wanting/shopping for a new NBA Team. See: http://www.draftexpress.com/profile/Wilson-Chandler-505/

So, to shore up the current line up, I would like to see the team to pick up the following players:
1) James Augustine (PF, 6′10 227 lbs, 28 yrs old) – currently playing and making his stamp in the Euro League. He played Quarterback in HS, was with Deron Williams in their Final 4 run as their Center. Was with the Utah Jazz Training camp. See: http://www.draftexpress.com/profile/James-Augustine-160/ ; and,

2) Hamady N’Diaye (Center, 6′11 225 lbs, only 25 yrs old) – recently been released by his NBA Team and picked up by the D-League. The Team can leave him in the D-League to continue his development much like how Ian Mahinmi (now with Dallas) earned his development. He has the necessary skills, physique to build more muscles, and hopefully the drive-motivation that we’ve seen in the likes of Biyombo & Ibaka   See: http://www.draftexpress.com/profile/Hamady-N-Diaye-1219/

Mr. KOC, these IMO, are 2 very inexpensive ways of acquiring assets. Don’t you guys agree?

Now, KOC can really make a splash between now and the 2012 Draft to acquire (replace current old pieces) new assets that can help elevate Utah Jazz to a Championship caliber (in the mold following Oklahoma Thunder). I am talking for KOC to use the 1) Okur Trade Exception; 2) GS 2012 First round pick (protected 1-7); 3) Jazz own First & Second round picks; 4) Jazz buying another Team’s pick(s) – seems like being done & possible); and, 5) Jazz other tradeable assets.

Players that are possible within Jazz reach during the 2012 Draft are:

1) Austin River (Duke) – 6′4″ 203 lbs 19 yrs old Freshman, a leader and a winner, will mold to become Jazz’s PG (in the likes of Stephen Curry). Projected #15, Round 1. See http://www.draftexpress.com/profile/Austin-Rivers-5743/ ; and,

2) Darius Miller (KY) – 6′7″ 230 lbs 21 yrs old Senior, has proven to be the most reliable auto-clutch Small Forward shotmaker (better than the overrated Harrison Barnes). He is not in the Draft radar and Jazz can possibly use their 2nd round draft pick on him. See: http://www.draftexpress.com/profile/Darius-Miller-5260/

I know, I know. There are other choices but I am just pointing out our own real possibilities. But, what is yours?

I agree that Paul Millsap is expendable, and even more than that, we need to trade him. We are a much better defensive team when he is off the floor, and while he has a lot of heart, he is just too short to anchor any sort of defensive effort as a starter. His contract is very affordable, making him large trade bait for a team lacking a great second of third big.

We would most likely package one of our wing players with Millsap, let’s say C.J. Miles. In return, the Jazz don’t really need anything, so we’d probably take picks, or up the ante for a high caliber point guard; the problem is that there are no real high caliber point guards available other than Rondo, who would require more than Sap and Miles, perhaps add in Harris and a draft pick to make it work? In this case for the salaries to match, we’d need to take on Brandon Bass (who I love and would be excited to see in a Jazz uniform), or perhaps Jermaine O’neil.

    Any thoughts on this?

As for draft picks, Darius Miller in the second round would be a steal!

  2. Arnel just set up my dream team righ there, I was think about trying to bring in wilson chandler since I hear he was coming back. He’s a big sf, he can score the ball play great defence. Just an all around great player allstar potential. Dj I think would fit in great with are team and, I believe we can easly get him if we offer cj and paul. Unless we set up a three team deal though we can’t get it done without taking corey who I wouldn’t want to see on are team. I know you said james I don’t agree getting anther big in here I do like dafting rivers though the kid looks like he has all the potential in the world. Great idea goin after wilson chandler though he seems to be looking into small market teams so we might be able tonget him.

I have advocated trading Paul Millsap. But only for an elite wing player. I wouldn’t trade him otherwise. He’s our most efficient player.

  4. KCJones says:

I’d love Wilson Chandler. The other PF and Center you mention…I’ll pass. I like Austin Rivers, but don’t know much about Darius Miller.

  5. Arnell says:

Thank you guys for your input. Now, if we can’t get Wilson Chandler which he has through 5pm today to submit an counter offer sheet to the Nuggets, don’t we all wish that Paul Millsap will finally accept to play and transform himself into a Small Forward – so, he can continuee to play in the Starting line-up with Jefferson (Center), and Favors (PF).

Then, our 2nd Unit will have Kanter (Center) and Jeremy Evans (PF) along with the services of the combo SF/SF of Josh Hayward, Hayward & Miles.

In this way, we don’t have to loose a player and keep everyone happy – at the same time keeping our production offensively & defensively in tact. What do you all think?

  6. I still think a trade with Philadelphia would be amazing for us. Even though Harris is playing well I would love Lou Williams..

If we would be willing to take on brands outrageous contact and then amnesty him we cold trade them millsap and Harris and then that opens them up to get in the bidding war for one of the big names this offseason.

Works for both teams and makes sense for both teams

  7. Arnell says:

@Dallan: That make more sense to trade with an Eastern Team. Lou Williams is an awesome scorer. But, wouldn’t you want Boibeous (PG) and Mahinmi (Center) for Paul Millsap instead?

  8. Arnell, the best post I’ve seen in a while. I agree with almost everything you mentioned except maybe the need for N’Daiye or Augustine (unless it was DJ). I also think Austin Rivers is overhyped as you mentioned Harrison Barnes might be.

Assuming we end up with both picks in the range of 11-13, could possibly lure in Wilson Chandler, and were ok dealing Millsap for an upgrade at PG, I would take Gilchrist if he was still available to backup Chandler (if not, try for Darius Miller with our 2nd round pick). I would then pick Perry Jones to develop behind Favors and share minutes with Evans. I know some may scoff at this idea, but Andre Miller is still very efficient and continues to quietly get the job done. If Gilchrist is Gonzo by the time we select our first pick, I take the best PG available to develop alongside Miller and Watson. (Lillard, Marshall?)

    PG – (possibly A Miller, D Lillard,or a trade for Harris), Watson
    SG- Bell, Howard, Burks
SF- (possibly Chandler, Gilchrist, D Miller), Hayward
PF – Favors, Evans, P Jones
    C – Big Al, Kanter

We would still have trade power or assests based on trading away Harris, Millsap and Miles

  9. Arnell says:

@Kory: Thanks! We are all, of course, speculating and trying to feed our own preferences. But, I am sure that KOC and his Team of Scouts are doing their job 24/7 & 365 days a year. Let us hope that the Team will soon come together in their winning ways and shape in becoming a Championship Contender that we all want them to be in the next 2-3 years.

And sure hope too that Coach Corbin will soon use the suggested set of players (Starters & 2nd Unit). And, play the best ‘hot’ players in their right position to finish a tight game for a win – instead of putting back the Starters (Sloan’s approach) who were cold and unmotivated – that have caused us possible wins (example: vs. Sacramento Kings).

  10. @Kory I do not know if you have watched Perry Jones play but he is so up and down.. One game he scores 20 the next 3 he scores 4 a piece.. He is like a CJ but in college.. I do not even think he should come out of college this year because of how horrible he plays.

@arnell I do not know about Mahinimi personally and if Millsap goes to Dallas then Deron definatly goes to Dallas to play with him again.. I think we need to keep Deron out of the West if possible not let a team over here get him.. But if we did that with Philly it would give them enough cap to go after one of the big name people.

Also in the 2nd round I think that maybe we should look at Tyshaun Taylor out of Kansas. He has improved this year a ton!! Everything that they said to him that he needed to improve on he has. He is shooting 43 percent from 3 and he is fast he can score.. He has improved every year and I think he would be a good change from the kind of PG we have had in the past.

I think the 1st round is to hard to speculate at this point cause we do not know how many picks we are going to have and where they are going to be. But even still it is fun to think about. But I do think it is going to be interesting to see what happens.

Also in a way I hope that we do not get the GS pick because there are a ton of big men and not really a lot of perimeter players at the top. Minus the two that are going to go in the top 5

  11. @Dallan, why would you NOT want GS pick? It is just another asset regarlless how we use it. Use it to trade up, trade it, package it with a trade…

  12. Woody Palmer says:

I think Wilson chandler can only sign with the nuggets now. It’s past time for him to sign offer sheets from other teams. His only alternative is to not play this season then he would become a unrestricted free agent after this season

  13. @kory I do not mean overall I do not want it I just do not want us to have to use the pick this year. It does not expire it will be with us next year as well.. I just think in a big man loaded draft it might be better served next year
