Meet
2013 Draft Watch till The Traded Deadline
Posted by: Patrick on February 11th, 2013
The author's views are entirely his or her own and may not reflect the views of the Utah Jazz. Many will say its too soon to be watching the 2013 draft, but until the trade deadline is over with, you need to look at whats out there. For us, there are very few deals that make much sense. There are not a lot of solid or top tier PG’s on the market, our biggest need. We all know that we cannot retain both Al and Paul, and we could end up losing them both. A trade for one of them means making a smart move, one of which could involve a draft pick. You know a top 4 would be out of the question, but there are some interesting prospects beyond that who could be helpful.
Projected first round prospects to look at;
Otto Porter SF http://espn.go.com/mens-college-basketball/player/_/id/56909/otto-porter
Alex Len C http://espn.go.com/mens-college-basketball/player/_/id/57379/alex-len
Isaiah Austin C http://espn.go.com/mens-college-basketball/player/_/id/61568/isaiah-austin
Trey Burke PG http://espn.go.com/mens-college-basketball/player/_/id/56670/trey-burke
Jeff Withey C http://espn.go.com/mens-college-basketball/player/_/id/40989/jeff-withey
You may wonder why I am looking at Centers, we will need a back up big once we lose one either at trade dead line or at the end of the season. The other two are explainable.
Projected second rounds worth watching
Nate Wolters PG http://espn.go.com/mens-college-basketball/player/_/id/46740/nate-wolters
Robert Covington SF http://espn.go.com/mens-college-basketball/player/_/id/47005/robert-covington
Ray McCallum PG http://espn.go.com/mens-college-basketball/player/_/id/52079/ray-mccallum
Solomon Hill SF http://espn.go.com/mens-college-basketball/player/_/id/45855/solomon-hill
Of course there are many other prospects, and we wont be able to land them all and why would we want to, but there are some pieces here that makes sense for our team. If you asked me who I would target I would tell you Otto Porter SF, Trey Burke, and then any of the bigs and or Nate Wolters. With two Aging PG’s and the need for a starter it could be smart to look at a couple PG’s in the draft. We all know that it wouldnt take much to top our backup PGs.
Now if given the opportunity to nab a good young guy, or even a solid back up guy for an expiring contract, its a win for us. We dont want to watch a player walk away for nothing if we can help it. We have many assets, I cant see watching one walk away when you can possibly land some cheap young backup tallent from the upcoming draft.

Al Jefferson, Paul Millsap, maybe Alec Burks and future draft picks for McLemore or Shabazz Muhhammad. It’s time to bring in a legitimate scorer.
We need another lottery pick we can make sit on the bench!
Nick, actually if your looking at Shabazz or Otto, they could possibly start as soon as next season at the SF. A top 30 PG could possibly top a our point guards right now. Its not only starting positions you look for. Any way you look at it I would much rather see another lottery player sitting on the bench adding depth rather than watch Al play out the remainder of the season here, and sign on with another team next season because we cannot afford to keep him and we get nothing in return.
I suspect the team will look to resign Mo, while letting Tinsley and Watson’s contracts expire. If the Jazz have the opportunity they will draft Trey Burke as someone to groom and replace Mo eventually and look to keep playing Burks as a SG that can also play as a back up PG when needed. If we lose both Millsap and Jefferson, we will have to have a backup PF/C and failing getting the a top class PG that would be our next need and our cheapest option for that position allowing more money to be spent at acquiring a SF through free agency or sign and trade. If the Jazz don’t acquire the PF or Center they need from the draft they might just resign Millsap at 8m a season. They know what they get from Millsap, and even if they sign him for 4 years, it doesn’t mean he will stay around for the length of his contract.
lol @Nick
@Patrick – those players COULD start. But you are aware that our coach is Tyrone P. Corbin, right? I believe we have TWO #3 pick bigs on the bench, a #10 pick and a #12 pick. All off the bench. 2014, 2015 and 2016 all say ‘Thanks for nothing, Corbin’.
Hayward was a 9th pick my bad.
Steven – Millsap wont sign for less then 10 mil.. he has said he thinks he deserves that and he will be offered that because solid bigs are at a premium right now..we have atleast 2 picks in this years draft…. i would not mind seeing the jazz pick up two more picks with the trades one more for this year and one more for next then trade the 2 betst of the 3 picks to a team with a top 8 pick and pick either Shabazz Muhammad, Anthony Bennett (Millsap 2.0) Marcus Smart, Otto Porter or Carter Williams then with the 3rd pick try and get trey burke
I believe the Jazz should only trade Sap for a Wall or Walker type of deal. (Or Bledsoe for that matter.) If that would happen any of the AL trades would work.
@ LK: Weren’t you the same guy that talked sh*t on my entire post ABOUT Kemba Walker or John Wall? LOL!!!! Yup, it was definitely you!
For the fun, we can’t have him and we don’t need bigs, but he may be the next big thing…….

Rudy Gobert, born in 92, 7′2, 7′9 wingspan, very mobile, good to block…….
scouts love him very very very much……
I said “should only.” Not much chance of it happening. Your glass is not even half full anymore.Calm down..
French Dude, you called it a couple yrs ago with Kanter. I like the physical play of Rudy, but he seems frail. Do you think he will put meat on his bones. Right now most PF’s outweigh him. He could fill as a good backup to Kanter, Favors, and who ever else we retain.
I like Trey Burks and Otto poter.

Patrick, he’s already 235lb, almost the same as a Serge Ibaka, he’s going to be a defensive menace because he’s fast and long, his speed is one of his upside, don’t make him slower for more meat…… he have good hands too, smart kid with a reel linear progression, made his first appearance with the French squad to have international experience this summer, don’t get me wrong, he need some more years, but he do the thing like they have to be done, and someone is going to take as a lottery pick i can bet some money on that……. for now he’s very longer version of jeremy evans if you can imagine a thing like that
I think Nate Wolters would be a great fit for the Jazz. If we get him with our 2nd round pick (projected 48) that would be great but he’ll probably be gone by then. I would take him with our 2nd first round pick. Better yet the Jazz should try to trade down one of their firsts for two high 2nd round picks. There might not be stars but they can find solid role players/possible starters like Wolters in the early 2nd round.
