Another installment of your the GM

Posted by: Patrick on June 9th, 2012

The author's views are entirely his or her own and may not reflect the views of the Utah Jazz.

Below are listed the players of our team. Most will agree that we need perimeter help. Most have ideas of who the want off the team and who they want on. The first 4 players listed are the supposed core to build around. Try to factor in salaries, position, needs, and some realism. What would you do to make the team better? Who do you keep? Who do you send away and for what to whom?

Facts
50 million tied up in the 2012 salary for players currently under contract:
You have to have 13 players on the team:
Watch the salary cap: http://www.sportscity.com/NBA/Salary-Cap

Players/Salaries/2012 nba ranking
Derrick Favors 4.7 mil, 6 mil, 7.8 mil, Top 30
Enes Kanter 4.4 mil, 4.7 mil, 6 mil, 7.8 mil top 35 rookie
Alec Burks 2.1 mil, 2.3 mil, 3.2 mil, 4.4 mil not yet ranked Rookie
Gordon Hayward 2.7 mil, 3.4 mil, 4.6 mil top 15
Al Jefferson 15 mil top 5 Center
Devin Harris 8.5 mil top 25 PG
Paul Millsap 7.2 mil top 10 PF
Raja Bell 3.4 mil Not ranked in top 50.
Earl Watson 2.3 mil not top 50
Jamaal Tinsley 1.3 mil team option not top 50
Josh Howard top 50 vet
Jeremy Evans Not ranked, always contributes.
DeMarre Carroll not ranked.
Blake Ahearn not ranked.

List of Free agents who may be good to look at.
Nash, Brooks, Miller, Nelson, Lin, Dragic, Gordon (although as a PG?), Batum, Evans, Beasly, Ersan, Hibbert, B Lopez, AK (4 mil), Novak, Green, Fields, Sessions, IAN MAHINM.

Trade thoughts:
Iggy, Granger, Draft picks.

Draft picks of note:
Davis, MKG, Barnes, Lillard, Ross, Jones, Marshall, Waiters

My thoughts:
Keep the core, let Miles go. Trade Bell for a draft pick or maybe swap a mid lvl pick for bells and our second round pick. Harris, Al, and Sap are all going to be hard to keep when the cores contracts come due. May be best to use them and their expiring contracts. I would love to keep both Al and Sap but I dont see it happening. We have two players who can play Center in the core so it would seem that Al’s big contract would bet the one to let go. Harris is not the PG of the future, but he could make a wonderful SG for some team. We a chock full of SG’s so keeping his 8.5 mil doesn’t make sense. The only way I do trade Paul, is for an offer you cannot refuse.

We should resign Evans, he always works hard, always gives us something, plus it would help keep Hayward happy. Wish the boy would work on Ball handling skills and shooting, he could easily play the SF then.

Your turn. What do you do, if you had the power?

  1. We can not keep all our expiring contracts without getting something back from them. But it needs to be decided which one we are going to keep. We CAN NOT keep both Millsap and Jefferson. In reality you need three quality bigs that get 25-30 mins and then an energy big off the bench. Then a 5th big with a cheap contract in case someone gets hurt. I still think we need a true 7 footer on our team.

When talking about wings we have an advantage cause Hayward can play 2 and the 3 so you want almost the same thing 3 wings that can play 30 mins or so and then an energy guy that comes in. In my mind I see that guy as Carrol. Kind of a Sefolosha type player. With Hayward,Burks,Carrol we have about 80 mins or so which means we need a pure scoring wing that wants to score the ball and come in for quick spurts. Burks could also become more of this player.

The PG position is interesting. Currently their are only a few PG I would really want over Harris. But also I think it is stupid to keep two old PG as backups on our roster. We are getting no looks at young PG which is what we need. So I think we need a better quality starting PG and/or a young PG to step in a couple years.

So now that I have explained all that I say we make a trade with Houston and take care of multiple needs. We will trade them Jefferson, Bell and Watson for Martin and Lowry and the 16th pick. They do this because neither of them want to be there and they want a big man. Mchale loves Jefferson. So now our wing position is taken care of and our PG position is taken care of.

Re-Sign Evans, Carrol and let Tinsley go.

With the 16th pick we take Festus Ezeli. He is 6′11 and only has 6.5% body fat. He is Athletic and gives us a huge presence in the paint. With our 2nd round pick we take a young PG to groom as the 3rd stringer. Think Machado or Taylor.

Lineup:(In order of who would start)
    PG- Lowry, Harris, Drafted PG
    SG- Martin, Burks, Hayward
    SF- Hayward, Carrol, Evans
    PF- Millsap, Favors, Evans
    C- Favors, Kanter, Ezeli

  2. L.K.Anderson says:

Team options must be done by June 30th.
Sign Tinsley for one more year. Ahern depends on what else happens.
    CJ,Howard BYE..
Watson is signed for one more year so depends on what happens with Harris.Trade him if possible.
Sign Evans for two to three years. His salary should not be that high.
Carroll I believe his option has already been picked up.
Bell. Try to get anything including Cheeseburger, Fry, and Coke..If all else fails amnesty..
Core of Hayward, Favors, Burke, Kanter = untouchable.
After draft and signings sign Sap to an extention.
AL if there is a deal that will help the team move him. If not resign him at the end of his contract for the bench at a much lower salary.
Use trade exemtion for Marvin Williams.
    Harris trade him..
Still try for a high draft pick.

  3. Omar says:

Bobcats are “actively” trying to trade the number 2 pick; they are yet to contact Robinson or MKG, and instead have contacted Zeller, so the pick is very much available.

Jazz trade Al, Watson, 2013 Jazz 1st round, 2013 GSW 1st round FOR
    2012 2nd pick and T. Thomas.

Jazz trade Millsap and Bell to 76ers FOR
Jrue Holiday, Philly 2012 15th pick, and Philly 2012 45th pick.

Jazz draft MKG with the 2nd pick. Arnett Moultrie (I see a lot of Favors in him, not as good but its there) with the 15 pick. Scott Machado with 45th pick, and Hollis Thompson with the 47th pick.

    Jazz sign Ilyasova, Carroll, Evans.
Tinsley retires and becomes Jazz assistant coach.
Amnesty Thomas (if need be, depending on signing FAs, specifically Ilyasova)

    Kanter, Moultrie
    Favors, Ilyasova, Evans, Thomas
    MKG, Carroll, Thompson
    Hayward, Burks,
    Holiday, Harris, Machado

  4. Logan says:

This is how I see it, there are 9 people that will be on the Jazz team next year.

    Alec Burks
    DeMarre Caroll
    Jeremy Evans
    Derrick Favors
    Devin Harris(If we don’t trade)
    Gordon Hayward
Al/millsap ( i think only 1 of the two will be on the team next year i would rather get rid of Al)
    Enes Kanter
    Tinsley/Watson

    The extra players are
Blake Ahearn( Don’t care what happens to him as long as he’s gone)
Raja Bell ( Trade him for anything you can
    Josh Howard
    CJ miles
    Tinsley or Watson
    Al or Millsap

    Jazz lignup
    Harris/(tinsley or watson)/?
    Burks/ Hayward/?
    Hayward/ Caroll/ Evans
    Millsap or Jefferson/kanter/evans/Favors
    Favors/kanter/?

Jazz should trade Jefferson for a wing player draft pick or add harris and trade for a legit point guard. Then Sign Ersan from the Bucks and and get another point guard to either back up Harris or whoever the jazz trade for have tinsley or watson back them up then Jazz can fill the spots with who ever they can find I would not mind if they sign Ak-47( for a decent price).

Also I think Aaron Brooks would be a good pick up if we cant get a trade for a good point guard.

If Jazz get a draft pick I would love to pick up MKG or if it is a lower lottery Lillard would also be a good pick.

If they trade Jefferson for a wing player I would want Granger Iggy Gay in that order

Also I think someone else Jazz could look to get is Tyreke Evans I looked on nba.com and they are reports that he is not going to get a contract extention and the Kings are looking to trade him. He is a great ball handler it seems that he can get to the rim whenever he want’s. He was the rookie of the year in 2010 this year was his third year but he struggled this year because of an injury he had on his foot. He could turn out to be a great player and a steal if he can stay healthy.

  5. I absolutely love that would Houston trade. Also if we could keep Harris as a 6th man 1-2, I would be ecstatic. But I don’t know if we could get better value in a Harris trade? Guys I personally Don’t want back- Howard, Bell, Miles, Watson Ahearn. Evans deserves a good reasonable contract I love that kid. Tinsley is a good 3rd string pg.

  6. KCJones says:

How bout Al, Harris and Bell to Bobcats for 2nd pick and Augustine.

  7. Drew Bingham says:

Isn’t Augustine a free agent? Plus I doubt they’d want Harris unless they played him at the two, since they’re trying to develop Kemba. I could see the Jazz trying to trade for the #2 pick, but I think the price might be too steep…

  8. KCJones says:

I really like Omar’s plan. Generalizing it, its keep our future core and trade our vets for young players and draft picks. I would be completely OK with this. I think Favors and Hayward have a mature enough nature to lead the team. We would probably lose quite a bit next year, but I would be SO excited about the next five years.

  9. disco says:

@Omar – If KOC is poached, can you apply for the gig. That team is top notch. I also like trading for the second pick. Its ok to be worse for a while when building for the future and you sometimes need to do that so you arent mediocre for life

  10. Shane says:

I think we can all agree that the Jazz need two things: 3-point shooting and more playing time for Favors. I’ll take it a step further and say we don’t need just a single 3 point shooter, but 2-3 solid shooters if we could find them.

As I look at SF’s around the league and in the draft, I would target Ilyasova. The more I look around, the more I think he could be our best offseason FA target. Shoots the ball, rebounds ok – I think he’d be a good fit. I have no idea what the market will command for him, let’s just say $7M a year for estimate’s sake.

Many will disagree, but AK is my back-up plan here – at $4M-$5M per year….but let’s hope we could land Ilyasova.

At SG, I’d target Brandon Rush. He’s a restricted FA. I will say we need to be careful as we don’t want to pull minutes from Burks. My hope is Rush could play the SG or SF spot depending on matchups. He’s solid on D and can bomb the 3. Again, not sure what he’ll get in the FA market, but let’s say the first year of the contract is $5.5M. If he commands too much, I say forget it as I think we are ok at SG with Hayward and Burks – but it would always be nice to have one more to add depth, especially one that shoots the 3 like he does.

Lastly, we need to address the big man situation. My proposed trade would be Big Al and Earl Watson to Toronto. Toronto has expressed interest in bringing in more veteran help and they’ve said they would do so at the expense of their #8 pick. So we would ask for their #8 pick, Amir Johnson, and Kleiza (who has a player option on his contract after the 2012-2013 season so he might leave anyway). Toronto would probably have to kick in some cash or one more player to make the trade viable. With the #8 pick, we take Lillard and have him learn behind Harris next year. Depending on Lillard’s development after his rookie year, we let Harris walk when his contract is up and turn the PG reigns to Lillard in 2013-2014. With Amir Johnson, we have him split time with Kanter at the C position. 24 minutes each per game. And Kleiza gives us one more decent shooter off the bench.

I’d bring back Tinsley and Evans. Not sure what Evans will get – let’s say $2.5-$3M per year. And lastly, that leaves Raja Bell, I’d trade for whatever we can – a future 2nd round pick or some cash. If we can’t unload him, amnesty him.

So 2012-2013 roster would look like:
    PG: Harris $8.5M / Lillard $2.5M / Tinsley $1.3M
    SG: Hayward $2.7M / Burks $2M / Rush $6M
    SF: Ilyasova $7M / Rush $5.5M / Kleiza $4.6M
    PF: Favors $4.7M / Millsap $7.2M / Evans $2.5M
    C: Johnson $6M / Kanter $4.5M / Favors $4.7M

This is $59M…..could be just a bit over the cap, but most these numbers I am making up.

  11. @Omar I like your idea minus one thing. I have made this mistake as well but how much do we really want turnover on the team?? A slow turnover is ok but not a ton cause then you are just integrating a new team ya know? I think in your idea there is just to much turnover..

Not saying I am all knowing but LK is doing the same thing he is going the core with one trade which makes the team better. I have gotten into the hype of bringing in all these players but I think we need to be careful about how many new faces we truly bring in..

  12. Omar says:

    Thanks @KC and Disco.

I also considered trading Al and Millsap to East teams so we wouldnt see them but 4the times a year.

Defensively, I think the starting 5 of Kanter, Favors, MKG, Hayward, Holiday would be one of the best. Not one of them would need double team help.

Ilyasova and Thompson are great shooters.

Jazz havr thr personnel to play small or big. Plus, the combo of MKG and Carroll will go against the LBJs, Durants, Melos, etc of the league.

I also like Burks play the point with Harris on the court so Harris can play off the ball some.

  13. Omar says:

@Dallan, I did think about that and my big fear is what happened that one year were Jazz lost a lot and got hardly anything in return. Boozer, Korver, etc.

Thats why I have come around to keeping Harris. As long as they do it before camp, I think it wont be so bad. I hoping talent overrides newness. I like the idea of them growing together like a college team. Like the fab five i guess.

Its just bad timing that Al and Millsap are in last year.

  14. It is very true about us losing that whole team basically within about 6-7 months. I think that should be in KOC mind cause even though we have the “core four” we have got to get other guys around them as well. I mean technically thinking about it we will have Evans if he is extended then this years 2nd rounder and then if no trades are made we would have two 1st rounders next year in a crappy draft and another 2nd rounder. So we technically will have 8 players under contract. But we do not know how those other 4 or even Burks and Kanter will work out. Even though I truly think they will be good we just do not know

  15. JRN5150 says:

I think we absolutely have to deal Millsap this year. He has some stellar value right now. Maybe even more than he is really worth. He is not resigning in Utah for what we can afford. KOC will end up having to choose Millsap or one of the young guys and it will be a tough thing to pull the trigger on because the intelligent portion of the fanbase wants to preserve the future when the other half likes Millsap and cant see past next year. KOC should do himself a favor and eliminate the situation before it comes up.

Al is the less urgent contract to move because his value isnt equal to his ability. But if the right deal comes up you have to pull the trigger.

I would feel comfortable letting Harris expire unless a playoff team wants to pick him up to make a championship run at the deadline.

  16. L.K.Anderson says:

@JRN: What gives you the right to claim to be part of the “Intelligent portion of the fanbase??” I am glad KOC has his finger in the trigger and not you!!

  17. Stellar value?? I think we think he has stellar value but everyone else that is trying to win a championship views him as the 1st big off the bench. Fans over value their own players. Why do people want to trade Millsap?? He is undersized that is the main reason. You do not think that other people do not see that?? Um ya they do.

Once again which one out of Jefferson and Millsap can play with both our young bigs EFFECTIVELY. Millsap. That is who should be kept.

  18. Logan says:

The main reason I would choose Millsap over Jefferson is that Jefferson is a black hole when it comes to offense, the ball gets stuck in his hands every play and know one knows what to do. They stand there and watch Jefferson do his thing. The only player that offense helps is Jefferson. I think Jazz would be a lot better if they moved the ball around. Also Harris is better than people give him credit for. Last year all he did was drive down the court and pass it to Big Al. That is not his strength harris thrives off of using his speed to get into the lane and then either passing or shooting. He needs to learn how to pass a little bit more but other than that he isn’t half bad.

  19. L.K.Anderson says:

I agree with Dallan. Woww what did I just say?? I would also think more teams are looking at Al for what he could add to their team. If it makes it good for both teams all the better..

  20. Shane says:

Big Al definitely has to go before Sap for all the points that Logan just made. Big Al has been great for the Jazz but we can’t have stall ball anymore.

  21. Omar says:

@Dallan true. Plus I think Al and Millsap have a lot of return value. They have a lot of interest, we just are set at those positions. If Millsap restructure and accept bench role id say hell ya keep him, but he hasnt so. And I think MKG is a knockout.

  22. Omar says:

A lot of value relative to Boozer, Korver, etc had.

  23. Since we haven’t proven to be a threatening team from the perimeter, I propose we pick up a few key role players to fill a huge void through free agency this summer. (Keep in mind, this is assuming that we allow Bell, Howard and Miles to walk and we don’t plan to get aggressive by moving either Jefferson or Millsap for a top 6 lotto pick this summer.)

Neither of these guys stand out as big name stars, which would lead me to believe they wouldn’t be demanding to be traded away from Utah (which happens to be a much better team than the teams they currently reside.) Their salaries in 2012 were only 3.5 million combined. They ranked 1st and 2nd in 3pt shooting % during the regular season.

Considering the fact that Utah could decide to keep Harris,Hayward,Millsap,Favors,Jefferson as the starting lineup next season, I would use the guys to fill up the bucket from outside alongside Burks, Carroll and Kanter in the 2nd unit. Those 3 could attack the basket with the threat of these guys on the wing. Any guesses….?

    Steve Novak and Ersan Ilyasova

If we could add AK for a reasonable price, we could play Burks at PG, Novak at SG, AK at SF, Ilyasova at PF and Kanter at C.
Burks, 2 Turks, Novak drops 3’s in your eye as he smirks, while AK of old goes baserk

2 of the best 3 pt shooters in the league killing you off the bench!

I also believe we could bring in Andre Miller to wrap up his career here at a reasonable price (maybe use the player exemption) with the focus on proven vets being directed toward Kidd and Nash.

Aside from but in addition to my free agency proposal, in a perfect world I would like to move Al and his iso offense for a stab at either Gilchrist or Barnes in the draft or work a trade for Igoudala. Then convince Sap to play 6th man and look to upgrade PG next season. This would leave our roster looking something like this… (13 players)
    Harris/Hayward/Gilchrist,Barnes or Igoudala/Favors/Ilyasova
    Miller/Burks,Novak/AK,Carroll/Millsap,Evans???/Kanter

I arranged the roster this way to spread the offense with a 3 point threat in both lineups

  24. @Logan I agree about Harris and a lot of the players for that matter would play without passing sometimes cause they did not know when they were getting the ball.. Scott Brooks said it best in me of his huddles for the Thunder

“No one is passing the ball, when one person does not pass the ball no one passes the ball. We have to have ball movement and that is the key”

The easiest thing to stop is Iso/hero ball. Just ask the Thunder and Heat. When they played Iso/Hero ball they lost when they played as a team they won. End of story.

  25. WOW JRN, Wasn’t planning on commenting but your little comment is too egregiously stupid to let go.

“The intelligent portion of the fanbase” wants to trade Millsap?! Does the “intelligent portion” not see the idiocy in trading the captain and heart of this team in order to improve NOW?

Keeping Millsap on the team, even in a limited/bench role makes our team stronger and more competitive.

See what people fail to realize about Millsap is that most teams don’t know his true impact and influence on the game. If your team is stupid enough to trade Millsap, they’re going to figure you’re desperate, and won’t give you enough in return. If we “HAVE TO” trade Millsap right NOW, we’re going to screw ourselves. If we trade Millsap, we’re giving away more than we’re getting.

There is not a better power forward in the NBA for the price than Paul Millsap. The man’s upsides and contribution per paycheck level is off the charts.

Sorry JRN, but the “intelligent portion” of the fan base dubs you a jackass.

And didn’t you just say that anyone who thinks we shouldn’t trade Millsap is isn’t thinking about the future? Yet your MAIN reason for trading Millsap is because his value is high right now, “higher than he’s even worth”?! and you can’t even name a player for whom this trade is worth?

  26. JRN5150 says:

I think you guys misunderstood at which point the “intelligent fans” would call for Sap to go. I wrote that the time is when he is asking for too much to resign and KOC must decide if we keep sap or save some money to resign Burks or Kanter so they dont walk. Yes, if you choose Millsap over one of those two for the future, you are an idiot and I dont feel bad for saying it.

Nick you realize his production-Price ratio goes down the crapper when he gets a big fat contract this offseason from a team like New Orleans or Charlotte, right? So we will have a great deal for another year that isnt going to end in a championship and then he walks. We cannot afford to resign Millsap and keep our core intact. It just wont happen that way. Even if we trade Jefferson it still cant happen. Both big guys need to go at some point.

Regarding trade value. Go ask any NBA analyst which of Millsap and Jefferson has better trade value. Millsap is the answer at least %90 of the time. He is a utility player that can still get big numbers. That isnt very common. He is more desired on a generalized basis. It was pointed out that Sap is a first big guy off the bench type player. Well I think we could trade him for another sixth man and get a low 1st round pick out of it too. That is more than he is worth in reality.

I was not saying that Millsap has to go instead of Jefferson. Millsap needing to be traded is completely independent of whether Jefferson stays or goes. With that being said, Jefferson’s cap room is going to have to clear also whether we trade him or let him walk. If we want to succeed at all we need to have solid cap room for when our young guys come up for an extension. That is part of the Oklahoma City formula that everybody is raving about. They got to where they are now because Sam Presti kept the cap empty so when Durant and Westbrook came up they got extensions and now Harden or Ibaka is next. We cant do that if we resign Millsap. Sorry to burst your bubble but its not that complicated.

So please re-read my comment without dying over the words Millsap and trade. It makes sense. If you are trying to analyze something please be objective. I like Millsap as much as the next guy but he just shouldnt be in our future plans.

  27. Omar says:

I gotta agree with @JRN’s premise.

Millsap made it clear he was not ok with coming off the bench, but that was last year and maybe he didnt realize how dominant Favors could be, so Id ask him one more time: are you in or out?

He HAS TO sign an extension at 5M to were he gets his 9M this year but price drop next year, AND he needs to embrace a bench role. I dont trust verbal committments. Apart from that happening before in the next week, jazz have to trade him to get into the draft and fill needs at other positions.

I love Millsap, but hes gonna be the one that decides ultimately to stay or go, so I wont feel guilty trading him since he would know what he needs to do to stay.

A team that has no identity would probably want Al more than Millsap, so I am thinks the Bobcats could and would pay Al about 17M to resign, i dont know if he will or not but the Bobcats would have stability at least. Drafting a rookie doesnt guarantee that.

  28. Omar says:

Losing the GSW pick has forced the Jazz hand, Al and the 8th pick would easily land the second pick, free cap space, and fill the SF position for the next 4 years. Since Jazz have to trade into the draft with no 1st, jazz are gonna have to move more pieces, i.e. Al AND Millsap.

  29. Patrick says:

I guess we should look at Progression before leaping to silly conclusions.

Sign a better PG, then deal Harris. If you cannot sign a better PG, then you keep Harris.

Same goes for Paul, sign contract extension for a manageable price. If you cannot then you trade him. It would seem silly to trade him and find out he wanted to finish his career here and would have signed a reasonable contract, and they guy we got in the trade of him flops wouldn’t it.

Progression of events. There is no reason to jump in and do anything without looking at the options, and following a progression of events. Of course there is that exception of when something gets handed to you and seems too good to pass up. DWill trade would fall into that category. Not committing not committing, Harris Favors Kanter. Hmm, good choice there.

  30. I still think that because Jefferson does not fit with any other player on this team that we should try and get rid of him.

I really think that trade with Houston I proposed gets us better in so many ways. We get our younger PG, we get a three point shooting wing, and we get a pick which we then can use on a cheap C. Because no matter what when we lose Jefferson we have to replace him with a C just because you need 5 bigs on the roster. With Favors, Millsap, Evans and even Kanter who could play the 4 we do not really have a true C. So even if we did not take Ezelit there is still 3 other 7 footers and one of them could be there as well in Zeller, Leonard, Melo. It would be a stretch for Melo. My choice really would be Ezeli or Zeller.

  31. Omar says:

I read Houston is really trying to package their 2 picks. Houston is a legit trade partner.

Lou Williams is opting out to test FA. Philly has 17M tied to Brand, and 13.5M to Iggy. Philly will be active players these next 2 weeks. I think theyll move Holiday to make way for Williams to start.

@Dallan I like your suggestion bout a legit 7′0 as depth.

    Revised Roster:
Same as earlier comment but use 15th pick on Meyer or Zeller. Amnesty Thomas for sure, and sign Novak.

    Kanter, Zeller
    Favors, Ilyasova, Evans
MKG, Carroll, Novak, Thompson (send to D League)
    Hayward, Burks
Holiday, Harris, Machado (send to D League)

If the Jazz give Ilyasova 9M at the most and Novak 3M at the most, Jazz would still be under the cap and still have Okur TE.

  32. L.K.Anderson says:

I would like a reference as to where Sap said “he was not ok with coming off the bench” I heard him say he would do whatever was the coaches decision and would abide by it. Reference to the first game of the season when Favors started.

  33. Omar says:

Hahaha. Ok if you want to use these post to argue semantics:

Millsap made it clear coming off the bench was not “IDEAL” (as opposed to saying not ok coming off the bench).

“It’s just like a daily job. You work your butt off to get places in life that you feel like you’ve grown and you feel like you need to be.” (Millsap Dec. 2011)

In my literary analysis I read “places” as being a code for starting PF and “need” as implying entitlment. Therefore by Millsap desiring to be a starter the inverse becomes true: NOT to start is undesirable.

Coming off the bench is not ideal for Millsap.

Unless he UNEQUIVOCALY states that he would embrace a bench role and less money, have to trade him.

  34. Logan says:

I think the reason Millsap started later in the season over Favors is because he outplayed him. Later in the year Favors was the better player as Millsap struggled but that transition back was not made.

  35. Omar says:

Thats the rub. Millsap deserves to start as the PF on an NBA team and has earned getting bout 10M….just not on a team with Favors. And thats the issue: at seasons end teams will want and offer Millsap a starting position and bout 9M, Millsap wants to start so hes gonna take that offer as a FA, and he should, Jazz however get nothing in return.

Of course if he wants to retire as a jazz man, then hell sign an extension at 5M knowning his backing up Favors. Draft is at the end of month tho.

  36. JRN5150 says:

I would be astonished if Millsap signed a contract for less than 3yr/$32 Million this offseason regardless of which team pays it. He is gonna go for money. I cant say I blame him if I look at it from his point of view. He realizes his days are numbered here because of Favors.

  37. Omar says:

@JRN, agreed. Jazz should still make that offer, just for finality.

If the east stays pretty much the same, Millsap has great chance of making the AllStar team. Plus, hed have an advantage head to head against most East PF.
Boozer, Bass, Baby Davis, Ryan Anderson, to name a few.

Doug Collins would love him in Philly.

  38. Patrick says:

Hmm, the Millsap, AL debate. Its interesting isnt it that we think there is only one correct way. So lets toss out other ideas that could play out.

Kanter is not quite ready to start, and it could be a couple of yrs before he is.

Favors can play either position and at times does a better job at the Center position

Sap plays well with both Kanter and Favors, making each better while Al does the opposite.

Al is supposedly a black hole, but seems to have improved his assists.

What if we played Favors as a starting Center until Kanter is ready to start there. Allowing for Favors to continue to develop and both Kanter and Favors to show that they are indeed the starting role players of the future before putting anyone out to pasture. At the beginning of the season, Favors wasnt ready for a starting role and eventually showed that he could play that role for us next season. But as a PF or as a Center? Who does he replace? Thats the true question. We all know Kanter is way too young, and way not ready for a starting role..

To assume that players are so greedy that they wont play in another position for the sake of the team is saying that they dictate their role. Both Favors as center, or Sap as 6th man. I dont believe we have anyone has shown enough as a player to dictate anything. But I can say I doubt that any player we have would say “not even”, if the place we put them allows us to be contending for a ring. Either way I doubt that its come to that just yet.

What I do look at is production vs cost. I did this when Boozer was here and he failed in that test. Did so again this season vs Millsap.

    Paul 16.6 ppg, 8.8 reb, 2.3 ast, 1.8 st, .8 blk, 7.2 mil and top 10 PF
    Al 19.2 ppg, 9.6 reb, 2.2 ast, .8 st, 1.7 blk, 15 mil, and top 5 Center.
Favors 11.8 ppg, 9.5 reb, .5 ast, .6 st, 1 blk, playoff stats, playing both positions.

So who’s position do you put him in next season. We know eventually Kanter will be filling one role or the other, but not next season. Paul is clearly the better value, and eventually will welcome as every vet does the chance to contribute from the bench as their bodies start feeling the stain of many yrs of abuse.

Another thing to look at. If we traded for a player like Iggy 14 mil or Granger 13 mil, which can get him at a better value? Al could go straight across. You have to toss in something with Sap to get them. Which makes better sense?

Sap is easier to swallow if your trying to get a draft pick, but in reality, the only guy I trade Sap for in this draft is Davis. We don’t need another big, or another SG, and the SF’s seem to have too many questions, Perimeter game being one of them. PG’s, sorry not trading Sap for one in this draft unless he is tagged with something else.

The argument that everyone wants sap, and he doesn’t want to come off the bench does not wash if we dish out AL, because Kanter doesn’t have the game to put Sap on the bench just yet. Of course everyone wants sap, who wouldn’t at his value. 7.2 mil for a starting top 10 PF, well duh.

Separate note, you guys keep talking bigs to come off the bench. Look at these guys, not big names, but value and worth looking at.

  39. disco says:

I know everyone wants draft picks now but wouldnt the smart play be to move Al before the draft and Sap towards deadline day. This allows Kanter to develop more before he starts, allows Sap the choice of signing an extension and gives the draft pick/s we desperately want.

  40. @disco if we trade either for a draft pick it has to be before the draft. We will have two 1st next year and a 2nd. Now I would assume we would use both 1st to move up but at the same time now is when we need to get the pick. We do not need to go into next years draft with 4 1st round draft picks haha

  41. Logan says:

Jazz just need 1 or 2 more young players I think Jazz should trade Jefferson their picks next year for the 2nd pick. Jazz need to start thinking about their young players right now and let them grow. We do not need any more young players so I suggest that the jazz get rid of all the players that are not apart of the future and start getting their young guns more expirients. Right now jazz need to get older not younger.

  42. Omar says:

I agree with @Logan. Since this is the stronger draft, Al and Millsap in last year, GSW and Jazz picks wont be top 10 next year (harder to move once order is finalized, im sure some GMs will under estimate Jazz and believe losing Al and Millsap will mean a top 5 pick), I say strike this draft and forfeit the next 2 years picks, for picks now or 3 years into the future.

  43. Next years draft is horrible! They only have 1-2 good players and 3 decent players right now. So even late lottery is an average player. We need to make our moves now and not sit on our laurels.

  44. L.K.Anderson says:

Again Patrick makes the most sense. And by the way you cannot trade a thirteen Million dollar contract for a draft pick. It would have to be a pick plus another player. Picks have no value but first rounders have a scale of value as to where they will get picked. I would still move Harris first. Then AL as he would bring the most value back. Key in Harris to Blazers. They like him. We have mentioned a three way for AL to Rockets. Use the trade exemtion for Williams from the Hawks. You could use Favors, Sap,and Kanter for the minutes of two positions. With a new center to train and backup. Sign Tinsley for starter at the point with Burks, Watson, and a new guy for the point. I would look at moving Watson also. There will be a lot of activity in the next three weeks.

  45. L.K.Anderson says:

@Dallan: Is a laurel the same thing as a fanny??

  46. Steve says:

the only 6 players i need on my team next year are Favors, Hayward, Kanter, Burks, Carroll, and Tinsley. The rest i feel are movable, expendable, and i am ok if they aren’t here… yes i know, millsap AL Harris and Evans aren’t on the list…
but those 6 players i listed are the ones that we build around, the four lottery selections are gonna be the core of this team and the guys that will carry us.
i feel Carroll is important because of his hustle and non stop motor. I want tinsley on my team because frankly, if i was a young PG(that hopefully we can draft this year) there is no other mentor i would rather have than Tinsley.

  47. Patrick says:

Steve, expendable maybe, but you cannot just give them away. I would have added Evans and Sap to your list if hustle and bringing it every night are requirements.

As far as drafting a PG, do you really believe there is one who is better than Harris or other free agents in this draft?

  48. L.K.Anderson says:

Again I am glad KOC is in charge. Only a few suggestions would work and most are so far off base you would be riding a sinking ship. It is fun to play GM but the next three weeks will be interesting..

  49. Omar says:

I dont know how legit these reports are but the jazz are pursuing Nelson???!!! Thats pretty underwhelming. Nelson shouldnt be in any of the first 15 or so plans.

  50. Jameer Nelson?? If you are talking about the report on ESPN that they could see Utah going after him? That is just some front office guy talking not knowing anything.

  51. Omar says:

@Dallan, nah I think it was Hoopsworld. The article also said Rockets are trying to package both picks to get Howard, Gasol, and I think Bosh. Hornets shopping the 10 pick conditioned on taking back Emeka, Sixers trying to get rid of Brand and trade Iggy.

  52. Omar says:

    It might have been hoopsrumors???

  53. Huh well I think he is an upgrade over Harris

  54. L.K.Anderson says:

@Dallan: Can we assume then that KOC’s laurel makes more money than all of the posters combined?? That being the case he had better take your advise..

  55. Logan says:

why is everyone so down on Harris. I suggest all you haters go to youtube and watch some of his highlights he isnt that bad. All of his highlights are in the fast break which Jazz never do because their offense is designed for Jefferson. He can shoot which he proved at the end of last season, and believe it or not but he actually was one of the most cluch players last year. He is great with the pick and roll which he suggested Jazz should do more but again it is not one of Jeffersons strenghs so again it was not in the Jazz offense. He is super quick and really fast, once an allstar always an allstar.

Oviously Harris and most of the Jazz team at that matter do not excel in the offense the Jazz are using. Jazz need to get a new offense or get people that will fit the offense(which means we get rid of everyone except Jefferson)and we build around him. If I was Coach Corbin I would tell KOC to trade Jefferson, then I would change my offense so that it was fast paced and had alot of pick and roll that would feature Harris Burks and Favors and if the defense collaps you can kick it out for a shot or drive again which would be Hayward Caroll Kanter( Kanter would be the guy who gets the Ofensive rebounds and when it is a time to play slow the Jazz feature him because he already has great footwork and is immovable in the post. On defense I would force the offense toward the middle where they have to get through Kanter and Favors

  56. @LK Half the GM’s in this league get paid to do their job and do not do it. I could build a team for pretty much every team in this league better then most of the GM’s. I know what is all ready going to come out of your mouth well then why don’t you. Its all about opportunity. If I knew the right people if I had the opportunities I would do it.

@Logan you also forget that Kanter has a good jump shot even though he has not shown us it cause of the lack of playing time. But he will be a good pick and pop player

  57. Logan says:

Thanks for bringing that up. He does have a great shot and he usually makes it, but know one else knows he does and when he gets the ball at the top of the key he won’t shoot I don’t know if he is scared to miss or he is told not to shoot it but he does need to start shooting more and if he can hit those all day which he will be open he would be even more deadly.

  58. L.K.Anderson says:

@Dallan: No I was going to say if you get the job take me with you. Problem is you would have to start out at a small college then work your way up. Not enough years left..

  59. @Logan I honestly think it has to do with playing time/confidence. He knew if he missed a shot he was pulled. He knew if he did something bad he was pulled. That was something that upset me is that people were not held to the same amount of accountability.

@LK I will take you with me haha I need some difference of opinions. You seem to be exactly that to me hahaha

  60. Logan says:

I pridict Kanter Top 3 Center
Favors superstar best power forward maybe close second to demarcus cousins
    Burks next Dwayne Wade
Hayward fills the James Hardin role and gets 5 6 man awards in a row, also gets 3 all star appearences in the next 4 or 5 years

  61. L.K.Anderson says:

Close second to Cousins??? Cousins is not even close. He may show games and spots where he is great but will never be consistant because he is a head case.Lets see him put several or even a couple of games together.

  62. Logan says:

That’s a good point I have not seen him play very many games so I just watched his highlights he looked really great but you do have a good point. If he realized that he is a nut case and took some therapy he could actually be pretty good.

  63. KCJones says:

Cousins is good. At least in every game against the Jazz that I watched him. Not the attitude you want your star to have, but he’s skilled basketball-wise for sure.

  64. Well that’s cause he can get every offensive rebound he wants over… Um what was his name agan??

  65. Steve says:

@patrick… all i said was the 6 players i listed are the guys i NEED on the team! I didn’t say to trade everyone but those 6. Would you be more upset if we traded Al/millsap/harris (thats not all 3 together) OR favors/hayward/burks/kanter?
I understand if trading those young guys means we get a superstar like dwight howard… but its not gonna happen.

I have no problem if we trade millsap or AL or Harris. No problem at all. Because they are not are future. I know that if/when we do trade these guys we will get something really good in return and a piece that fits better with this team.
