Meet
Jazz Bigs

The author's views are entirely his or her own and may not reflect the views of the Utah Jazz. Now I bet you think I am going to talk about who the Jazz should pony up in a trade. If we entered that debate, you would hear guys calling out for Millsap or Al, and tell you why we should keep the other for a much lower salary. But not in this post.
So, you probably think I am going to talk about who should start, and why. Here you have the great devide, over Millsap and Favors, with the occasional Al thrown in from the people who dont care about how much they are paying a guy to come off the bench. Nope, not in this post.
Then it has to be about how favors is the future, and how are we going to develop both Favors and Kanter. Wrong again.. But getting warmer.
Why isnt anyone talknig more about Kanter Vs Favors? Yep, lets take a closer look at the taboo subject of which one will succeed and which one will go farther. Since we havent heard much on the debate here, I expect it to get pretty nasty in the comments section, but it really doesnt have to. Lets just take a look and dare to hope for a glimpse at what could be.
Rookie seasons
Enes Kanter Posts
4.6 ppg, 4.2 rb, and .3 blk in 14.52 min game.
If you average mins to equal Favors mins Kanter posts
6.7 ppg, 6.1 rb, and .44 blk in 21.3 min game
Favors rookie yr
6.5 ppg, 5.3 rebs and about .8 blk per 20 mins.
This season so far..
Enes Kanter 12.7 ppg, 12.3 rpg, 1 blk
Derrick Favors 5.7ppg, 3.3 rpg, 2.3 blk
Now I know what your going to say, but Derrick is playing against starters while Favors is playing against scrubs. Then lets compare Derricks last seasons number to Kanters 3 games this season, second year for each.
Kanter
12.7 ppg, 12.3 reb, 1 blk
Favors
8.8 ppg, 6.5 reb, 1 blk
Am I saying Kanter is a better player than Favors, not really, I am just making some comparisons. Everyone thinks Favors is the real deal, who will be an All Star one day. Can Kanter be one as well? If his numbers continure to improve and Favors is to be one, then why not Kanter? Remember Kanter is only 20 yrs old. The thing I really like about the kid, is he plays and works like sap. The amazing thing is the limited amount of ball the kids played and how much improved he is at such a young age. Can he take it to the next lvl, I think so.
Now what if they both push each other to the next lvl, and Hayard and Burks follow suit. Burks has some great teachers on the team and so do our bigs. I remember guys not so happy about Kanter, but I think he is going to change that. Favors may be the next big in a Jazz uniform to head for the All star ring, I sure hope so. Just remember one thing about the Big Turkey. He stole Dirks scoring record at the Nike hoops summit, seeing his work ethic and desire where is his ceiling?
Karl Malones first and second yrs
14.9 ppg, 8.9 rb, .5 blk in 30 mins, or 9.9 ppg, 5.9 rebs, and .33 blk per 20 mins
21.7 ppg, 10.4rb, .7 blk, in 34 mins. or 14.46 ppg, 6.9 rebs, and .42 blk per 22 mins
There are a few differences. Karl started a lot more games coming into the league. You have to remember that Karl was 2 yrs older than either of our young guys. When he came into the league he was a yr older than Favors is now, and 2 yrs older than Kanter is. Check, I could be off a hair here, but my point is, that once our two youngsters age, I wonder where they will be in 2 yrs of development and full seasons to play. Could you imagine if one, or could we be lucky enough for both, to be close to what the Mailman was?
I hope we can keep Millsap and or Favors (Sap).. But even if not, we are fortunate to have the up and coming team that we do. If Hayward and Burks comes along with them, I think people will have to look differently at the Jazz come the end of this season. No matter what you got out of the print above, you have to be excited about the Utah Jazz.. Gooooooo Jaaaaazzzzz…

I agree Kanter is going to be a beast. I was stating this a long time ago but everyone called me stupid and that Kanter was a bust he was so far away and so on. The thing is he is good and he will get better.
Here is why a comparison to me is a bit hard to do. We put Kanter in more of a position to succeed because he has more of a back to the basket game then Favors. Does he still need work? Of course but at the same time we put him in a better position to succeed. Favors is best at P&R and motion but we do not put him in that position. We have ran two P&R plays for him over the first three games. That is not enough when that is what he does best at.
Favors has said he is tired and does to have his legs under him. That could affect his jumper. The couple I saw him take we’re short which would be just that. So I think some time off will be good. Hopefully we see some difference these next couple games.
I always knew Kanter would be great. Still think he will be. The smartest things the jazz ever did was pick up Kanter over some of the other gaurd options like Brandon Knight and Kemba Walker that draft. The Point Guard is very important but true centers let alone great centers are hard to come by these days. Good young points are flying into the league left and right. If we remain patient we’ll get a hold of a good young point.
I agree Dallon. Its probably not fair to compare, especially since both are actually playind different roles. Favors will get better. He is like all, first 10 games out, gets him prepped for the season and they progress as the yr goes on.
But I like you want to point out that Kanter is no Fes either. We are lucky to have both of them, and as they continue to develop which they both can make jumps for a couple seasons from now, we have much to be excited over.
They are both just pups, I cant wait to see what next yr brings. But I am just happy to watch them grow now. French Dude, he knew it before we even drafted Kanter. I remember thinking, what? A big? Are you nuts? It didnt take long to jump on the band Kanter, coaster. I was right there with French dude, saying pick Kanter by the time his name was called. This season makes me happy we did.
I think the difference in this pre-season is that Kanter came ready to play, and D-Fave is still getting in game shape.
Really, their numbers are ver close overall, with Kanter being a better rebounder and Favors being a better blocker. As far as offense, I think Kanter’s got a bit more polish and Favors has a bit more athletecism. I’m happy to have both, and it’ll be interesting to see if the Jazz make a move by mid-season or go into the offseason letting Al and Millsap go into free agency.
Yes, it’s only pre-season but I am very impressed that Kanter used the summer to really work on his body and his game. This is the beginning of the development of the kind of work ethic he needs to become the beast in the middle.
Though Favors is not scoring many points in the pre-season, I’m happy to see his defensive skills developing. The points will come. But defense forms the foundation that the team needs to become more offensive.
And as noted, they’re both still young but with the “right” attitude, they will become the foundation for the Jazz to move “forward.”
The thing I think kanter needs to work on alot is his ball handling. He seems not to be able to hang onto the ball when opposing players are trying to take it away from him. Like he does not have enough hand strength to hold onto the ball. Other than that he is a beast.
@dallan, I too have said, in time Kanter will be our best offensive option. For being an absolute bull inside, he has a great outside shot, that once he develops confidence in taking it, he’ll be quite the matchup nightmare.
Now, Favors and Kanter are different animals. You can’t look at just the numbers with these guys. I think Favors won’t put up big rebounding numbers playing alongside Jefferson and Kanter, because Favors is the shotblocker.
Let me pose a scenario…
Have you ever played 21? tips or no tips doesn’t matter.. But there’s the guy that defends and tries to stop the offensive player, and there is the guy that hangs out by the hoop to collect rebounds or tips and takes advantage of the other guys defending… Do you see where i’m going with this?
Favors is an athletic freak, that plays defense on his man and picks up where Jefferson and Kanter slack. So while Favors is coming down from an attempted swat, Al and Enes are in position for the rebound.
As for their offensive games, Kanter has always been the more skilled player, his post game is good and can be great, also his shot is much better.
Favors is an athlete. Plain and simple. He’s gonna be able to do things kanter and al could only dream of.
So while Al and Enes may put up better numbers, Favors leaves his stamp and has more of an effect on the game.
I’m excited and cautiously optimistic with Kanter. He’s looked great thus far in pre season and I hope he continues to make strides as the year goes on. As for Favors, he showed me all that I needed to see during the playoffs last year. The man is a serious beast and a core part of our future. His play in the pre season doesn’t mean anything.
Let’s not forget what Favors was doing at the end of the season against teams like San Antonio in the playoffs. He almost averaged a double-double against an intense SA team (SA playing their starters and trying to win).
I agree with Jazz Man completely.
I am stoked for what I have seen from Kanter as well. By mid-season we could have one of the best front courts from ANY combination of our big guys. Milsap is a 4, but the other 3 bigs are a 4-5.
(I am drooling over Favors and Kanter next to each other in 2-4 years! I think they compliment each other perfectly.)
First, for a new Mailman we need to play with genetics and mix the beast in Favors and the game in Kanter, because he had the two of them inside him……..
)
For sure, Enes have bigger fundamentals he know the game, he know how to shoot, and it’s very logical when you train with pro and play in national team since you’re 14, if he continue to work like that (and i’m sure he will), he can be like Dirk, star and first option to his team in the future…..
Favors, i think we have 2 options with him, he can be the jermaine O’neal of Portland, huge upside just waiting to wake up (i hope we are the pacers and not portland in that story), or he can be a sort of Dwight Howard, strong D but definitely not a leader and not the guy who is going to make you win……. worst case he never wake up and become kwame brown
i like the two of them, but i see Enes with more cards in his hands to be a big star of this league, (and yes Patrick i think that since a long long time
but definitely, the 2 of them, growing together, learning from each other, challenging, it can be very dangerous for every team we will play in the next decade
@Steve I liked that explanation and makes perfect sense.
@ French Dude The reason why I do not see anyway in which Favors is Kwame Brown is because he has fire and passion and is willing to work. Kwame had no heart whatsoever and that is where he failed. He had the talent just no will to play or get better.
@Dallan, yes you’re right, like i always thought, heart is the most essential quality for a high level athlete….. see what a Millsap can do with everyone telling him every day that he can’t because he’s too small……
@French Dude. Great example!
I’m not worried about Favors. At the very least, he is going to be one of the best defenders in the league. He already reminds me of Tyson Chandler.
Faves is just getting warmed up. I’ve been keeping track, and he’s gotten progressively better each game. Tonight he had 10 pts, 5 rebounds, 4 assists, 2 steals, and 1 block.
I was also pulling for the Jazz to draft Kanter. The second I heard that he shattered Dirk Nowitski’s record at the Hoop Summit, I was sold. Then I watched clips of him and saw that he had a beautiful jump shot in addition to being a banger in the paint. I have never doubted him, and never will. At the very least, he is going to average a double double over his career.
@Nate: Trust me, Strength is not the issue with Kanter. LOL. Are you kidding??? The reason he is turnover prone is he has a tendency to lower the ball when’s getting in position, making it easily swipable, especially in traffic. He just needs to learn to hold the ball high and closer to his body.
The future is bright with these two studs.
@ Steve thats a great point. Favors is our first line of Defense in the post giving much easier rebounds to the other bigs. So their stats are much more padded compared to Fav’s. Fav’s is doing the work that wins. regardless if he breaks 10 ppg, he should be getting alot of minutes.
@ French Dude , I agree with that comparison. When Kanter gets his offense and footwork up to par in the nba that he did in that hoops summit game , the killer shark in him will come out. I really think that we dont see that while he is adjusting to the social element of the US and NBA and his skill set growing. Its amazing how good he is for how many total game minutes he has played in his life.
Favors can definitely be a Dwight. I think that his playing weight is also better a bit more lean like Kanter. He will beat the bigger centers with athleticism easier than putting on pounds.
Also, is anyone else totally high on Marvin Williams? Do you guys realize how much better we are, just because of him? Even if we didn’t have Mo Williams and still had Harris, we would STILL be a better team just for having Marvin.
Love love love what he brings to this team. To be honest, he reminds me of a longer, quicker Paul Milsap. Once the season is all said and done, I’m confident that Marvin Williams will have been the best thing to happen to this team.
Kevin O Connor for the win! Oh yeah, two more words: Kevin Murphy.
Yeah Nick Ive always thought he got the shaft in Atlanta. I was real excited that we picked him up. After his back injury some fans got down on him , but he stayed solid with the Hawks. He can do so many things for us. I think he’s a great fit for us.
Marvin’s back injury could be traced to a Summer League play here a SLCC when ARAUJU fouled him hard (don’t remember exactly if he was pushed or pulled down).
Our new Jazz players is CREDIT to the KOC’s Midas Touch after he blow up the DERON WILLIAMS bad karma.
Go Jazz!
On another front Patrick I see where the Fakers just waived the black Jimmer..Don’t know how to spell his name but it is something like Goldylocks..
