Who would you resign?

Posted by: Ben on March 19th, 2013

The author's views are entirely his or her own and may not reflect the views of the Utah Jazz.

I know its a bit early to be talking about this.  There is still enough of the season left for players to have a chance to prove themselves.  The end of the season is getting closer (hopefully not too close) and that means… free agency.  We have 8 guys coming off the books (technically 10 but I don’t count KMurph or Raja) and its pretty likely that we will be keeping some of them.  So, I give you my top FA’s that I’d resign in the order of importance/value.  I’m attempting to take into consideration other FA’s that we could/should pursue and what we MIGHT be able to draft.  There is certainly some flux in the order but it is more or less how I feel we should pursue each player in resigning him.

1. Mo- We need a point guard.  Even if we draft someone, that rookie isn’t likely to be good enough to start.  I’m also not very confident that we would be able to sign a PG that would be better than Mo, let alone cheaper.  Besides, Mo likes it here and I think that says something.

2. Demarre- Hustle.  Defense.  Effort.  Every night.  Plus he’s cheap.

3. Paul- Leads the team in steals.  He’s kinda like Demarre but bigger and can actually score.  I’d hate to see him on another team.  The problem though is: he’s undersized to play the 4 (which I feel is forgivable at times), he takes big minutes away from Favors and to a lesser extent Kanter, I’m not confident that we could (should?) resign him for less than $8m.

4. Marvin- I like this guy’s attitude.  He isn’t tenacious like Demarre, but he certainly gives great effort every night (when healthy anyway).

5. Randy- One dimensional.  A 3 point specialist is something we’ve sorely lacked in the past and there’s a good possibility that he’d come back anyway.  I don’t feel his one dimension is consistent enough to resign him though.

6. Al- Its hard to send away our #1 scorer.  But we’ve done it before… Besides, its not like he’s a great defender.  I think it’d be worth it for Favors and the Kantersaurus Rex to develop.

7. Earl- Doesn’t score.  Doesn’t rebound.  So-so defense.

8. Jamaal- Toss up between these last 2 and for the same reasons.  If they’d play for peanuts then resign them, but I’m sure we can find better.

I think you pretty much nailed it! Marvin has an option to re up for another year which is probably what he will do. Seems like a great guy, hopefully he can consistently play the way he has the last few games. Otherwise let him go. You can add heart and toughness to that list of Demarre’s attributes. (Something this Jazz team desperately needs right now.) I hope the Jazz sign him, but I am afraid he might wanna go somewhere else because it seems Corbin doesn’t value his effort. He ALWAYS busts his butt off, and gets rewarded with DNPs. Al has to go, he kills our ball movement and defense. Amazing scorer, and seems like a great dude, but he has to go.

  2. disco says:

How about 1. DMC 2. Foye 3. KMurph and that’s it. Millsap isn’t worth the dollars, Mo is injury prone and not worth the risk, I won’t even bother with Al’s deficiencies and Marvin is coming back as nobody is going to offer him more than 8.5. Basically get a new team that can do the job

  3. TACOREV says:

Marvin has a player option and will be back, no need to speculate on him.

I would re-sign both Carroll and Foye, as both should come for cheap and can make significant contributions off the bench if used properly by a competent head coach.

Everyone else needs to go. Mo isn’t a good fit for this team. We need to move on from Millsap. As much as I and everyone else loves him, he takes away too much playing time from Kanter and Favors. It’s well beyond time to look forward to the future. Watson and Tinsley are scrubs and not worth even the minimum possible price. Jefferson… enough said.

Out of those five, the only one I would accept coming back is Mo, as the PG options are pretty slim this offseason. A one year deal would be alright, I suppose.

First and foremost, however, this team needs a coach that is capable of making competent NBA decisions. Corbin’s removal should be the first item of business this offseason.

  4. Lucky says:

Mo is next to worthless as a PG. He kills the other players ability to score. He shoots too much trying to be the go to guy in the clutch. His injury history makes him a gamble.

Al is gone. Paul may resign, but he needs to come off the bench.

    Carroll will resign.

Hayward and Favors get extended but both of them are questioning the Jazz strategy this year. I doubt Hayward wants to play another year with Mo much less several more. He’s expressed his frustration to other people.

Tinsley and Watson already play for peanuts and should be resigned.

Foye isn’t worth the price. Better players are available.

  5. noneyadb says:

What no CP3 on the wish list??

  6. disco says:

@taco – if only we had a competent head coach, or at least semi competent

  7. ThanhVII says:

    1. Mo- only as backup PG, he has always been average and now sub-average
    2. Carroll- He seems to play better off the bench, so either is ok
    3. Paul- I would say let him go and play Evans off the bench and let Favors start with Kanter(they look ready to me)
    4. Marvin- Again, I thought he would be utilize on the defensive end more, but I think he should be resign
    5. Randy- I think another bench role if we resign
    6. Al- I think Kanter is ready, so Al leaving is a better option
7/8. Earl/Tinsley- their roles are backup, but they shouldn’t expect playing time,so resign either for that role only

  8. L.K.Anderson says:

I think Foye has been worn out by starting. Bring him back as a reserve only. Sap and Marvin could ancor the second unit.
If Jazz trade for a point then I see Mo going also. With his injury history they may not even consider it.
Trade Al to Hawks for Korver and filler.
    Yes, Yes resign JYD..
And most certain in no way bring back Tinsley/Watson.Jazz in the draft should key on the point guard spot.

  9. KCJones says:

    1. Mo – wouldn’t resign. Not the PG I want for my young group. I’d shoot for CP3, then sign Calderon when Chris Paul returns to Clippers, then try to get a young PG in the draft so I don’t have to sign Watson/Tinsley.

    2. Foye – once again a Corbin issue. I think Foye would be great scoring off the bench. But he’s a vet so Ty’s psychosis forces him to start Randy. Korvers a free agent and in spite of his defensive deficiencies, he always gave great effort.

    3. Al – bye.

    4. Millsap – I want to resign him, but I think we’ll have to overpay him for FIVE YEARS. So I think he’s gone. A 3-yr $24M contract would be my max offer.

    5. JYD – resign the Carrol man. He’s been better than Marvin Williams over this season.

    6. Marv Williams – he’ll opt in for another $8M.

    7. Watson – fierce demeanor, but can’t hit a shot and forces himself into turnovers by picking up his dribble. I could play PG better than this guy.

    8. Tinsley – another Corbin psychosis player. Would make a great 3rd PG, but his veteran-ness forces Ty to play him as a starter or 2nd guy. I would like to resign him BUT I DON’T TRUST CORBIN TO PLAY HIM CORRECTLY IN THE ROTATION.

Ty is the wrong coach for this team going forward. FO needs to start there this offseason. Would love to see new blood in someone like Stan Van Gundy who knows how to construct a team identity around his players talents and has a focus on defense.

  10. Adam says:

I’m only resigning DeMarre Carroll! We need to invest in the draft, trade for a high to mid lottery pick and select Trey Burke. He looks like the Deron Williams of old!!! He shoots, he drives, he dishes, but the best part, Burke plays tough defense… Something NONE of our point guards can do, with the exception of Alec Burks. In my opinion, we also need a defensive center. In the draft the ideal choice is Nerlens Noel. His stock with drop with the injury but I don’t think we can grab him. My next choice is Alex Len. However, Larry Sanders is a Free Agent. Milwaukee will want to keep him but he’s the defensive player of the year this year (I guarantee it). I say we grab Kyle Korver from free agency (he already wants to come back here). He is a slightly better shooter than Foye but he’s tall and plays defense. We also have a whole in the SF position (Marvin will probably pick up his option but I don’t want to play him much). If we could grab Trevor Ariza for a relatively cheap price I think it is totally worth it!!! Here’s the lineup I would LOVE:

    PG: Trey Burke, Alec Burks
    SG: Gordon Hayward, Kyle Korver
    SF: Trevor Ariza, DeMarre Carroll
    PF: Derrick Favors, Jeremy Evans
C: Enes Kanter, (Nerlens Noel, Larry Sanders, Alex Len)

I love this whole lineup because there is defense at every single position. The PG’s are quick and aggressive. The SG’s are tall and Gordon blocks shots well. Ariza and Carroll are both energy players and Ariza shoots very well. Then the PF’s and C’s all block shots and run the floor!!!

Whoever said that drafting a point guard in order to start him is a bad idea, I have a few names for you. Chris Paul starting when he was drafted by New Orleans. Kyrie Irving started for the Cavaliers. John Wall started in Washington D.C. Damien Lillard started for Portland!!! I don’t care if we have a crappy first season with this lineup… Get the guys we want in the starting lineup and give them minutes so they will develop!!

@KCJones, thank you!! I completely agree with your comment on Corbin. He kept saying last night that they needed to lock down on defense and get the ball in the paint. The players didn’t do that so he left them in. A good coach would have buried them at the end of the bench until the got the message! I agree with Stan Van Gundy!!! Wish we could steal Popovich…

  11. Paul says:

CP3 resigns with Clips and Jazz start working on a trade for Bledsoe. They’ve looked at getting him for awhile. It will probably come in the form of a sign in trade and draft pick.
Calderon is farther down the list.

In free agency the Jazz should not bring back any former players. Historically the Jazz have come out on the losing end of bringing back former players 90% of the time.

The Jazz won’t sign any long term contracts with FA’s. They will be right back where they are now in two years with FA’s playing for numbers in contract years. Only three or four players should be on short term contracts and they have to be bench guys. But I can’t see the Jazz going long term.

  12. Eric Ostler says:

Well as much as i like the way Foye has been playing i have to say No to resign him unless it is cheap… Kyle Korver has been saying comments the past few weeks that if the jazz are willing he would come back… 50% 3 point shooter i would take that Marvin Yes he will be back but he is beeter without jefferson on the floor take a look at his stats and he has been playing better coming of the bench for the team. as much as i like millsap both him and jefferson need to be signed and traded this summer… we have the bird rights on them. work out a deal with clippers to send bledsoe this summer or work a deal with atlanta for teague. there are alot of possibliltys.. i will say this

CORBIN HAS LOST THE TEAM THEY WILL NOT PUT THE EFFORT IN FOR HIM.. AND HAS LOST ALOT OF THE FANS AFTER CHASTIZING THEM FOR BOOING WHEN KANTER WAS TAKEN OUT .. YOU DO NO CALL THE FANS OUT THE WORST THING YOU CAN DO AS A HEAD COACH.. #FIRECORBIN WE NEED A COACH THAT THIS YOUNG TEAM WILL LISTEN TO AND RESPECT CORBIN HAS DONE NOTHING TO GET OR EARN THE RESPECT OF HIS PLAYERS AND THE FANS OF THE UTAH JAZZ.

  13. Jamezz says:

Agree with KCJones about Mo. A PG like Calderon could teach a young guy like Trey Burke more fundamentals. Not just dribble around and just shoot whenever he gets a little bit of space, without trying to find any better looks.

Or penetrate in the line and make a risky pass back out looking for someone to suddenly be in the right place.
I mean that’s what we see Nash or Rubio do all the time, except for that they know where the other 4 players are in the court.

  14. Kevin says:

Demarre Carroll and MAYBE Mo. No one else.

  15. Omar says:

If Carroll would want to stay, then for sure him. Murphy. Foye to like 5M tops…..THATS IT!

  16. Jamezz says:

JYD is a must. As I said at the beginning of the season, I wished we had 5 DMC’s in the team, in terms of energy and actually being grateful for playing in the frickin’ NBA earning tons of money.

  17. My choices to resign this summer are Carroll, Foye on the bench. I wouldn’t go the FA route unless we can’t get some cheap Center with experience ala Elson. We have 3 draft picks in which I would 1st pick Trey Burke, then a SF or SG. I’m getting intrigued with Tony Mitchell. Do what ever we can with resigning our core4, with the freed up money. I also like Paul and Al, but we need the money to sign and keep the youth.

  18. DMC and Mo as backups only. Get rid of the older players that are holding us back. But it all doesnt matter if we dont get rid of are incompetent coach. DL has the perfect opportunity to make something special with these extremely talented young guys and big money to spend! Man up! Take ahold of the team from KOC, and talk some sense into the stubborn Miller family. #firecorbin

  19. Mo Williams, Randy Foye, Paul Millsap and DeMarre Carroll are Jazz type guys, therefore I wouldn’t be surprised if most if not all 4 FA were re signed this offseason. Al Jefferson is a great guy and nice piece on offense but his huge contract and defensive skills hinder us from taking it to the next level. Unfortunately Mo has started taking way too many ill advised shots and I don’t see him taking us to the next level either.

If Millsap isn’t wiling to come off the bench and we decide not to re up on Al, I would target Jarrett Jack, David West and JJ Hickson in free agency to backup Mo, Favs and Kanter.

Assuming West and Hickson aren’t interested in becoming 2nd unit guys I would target Trey Burke (PG), Tony Mitchell (PF), and Dewayne Dedmon (C) in the upcoming draft.

I think taking the free agency path provides more of a win now environment whereas landing the mentioned talent in the draft allows us the flexibility to provide pay raises to our current youngsters while developing talent for the future. With a young talented core, we might be able to land a legitimate All Star caliber player in 2-4 yrs if Hayward, Favors or Kanter fail to meet that level of expectation.

Ideally I would do a mixture of the 2. I would pick up Jarrett Jack in FA and draft Burke. If Foye was unhappy letting Mo walk, I would re sign Korver to backup Burks. at SF I would stay put with Hayward and Carroll. David West is playing better than Millsap and Favors this season but at 31 might be willing to follow Favors off the bench more than Millsap is willing to? If not, I pick up Tony Mitchell or Alex Poythress. and finally at Center I would test the waters with JJ Hickson. He would be a steal at 6-8 Mil. If he warrants a higher pay raise or fails to buy in on the idea of backing up Kanter I would then draft DeWayne Dedmon as a 7 footer out of USC to develop behind Kanter.

    Jack / T Burke
Burks / Foye or Korver / Murphy
    Hayward / Carroll / Marvin
Favors / West (or Mitchell) / Evans
    Kanter / Hickson (or Dedmon)

  20. mtnman801 says:

DMC and Foye if the price is right. I think they both want to come back, but they may have some other suitors out there that could pay more. I would want to sign them both for more than just a one year deal, and then you have to consider how long and for how much you are going to extend Favors and Hayward. Early in the season Mo looked like a huge upgrade from Devin Harris, but his shot selection, volume shooting(ala Big Al), and poor decision making when he pushes the ball up the court make me want to sign him at a discount to his current salary. Oh yeah, and he is injured half the time. We need to draft a PG or two, even if that means combining picks to move up. Having said that, I would re sign Mo at 6-7 mil for 1 year. I would love Paul to come back, as a chip-on-his-shoulder 6th man for 3 year 18 mil, but he wont.
I would prefer to just hold on to DMC and Foye, add some draft picks, see what the kids can do. I know youth doesn’t win in this league, but it would re-engage the fan base to see a plan coming together.

  21. Nate says:

Wow some of you have too much time on your hands.

    Why such long comments?

Isn’t it obvious who the Jazz are going to resign?

  22. Justin says:

Mo – Maybe. I think he’s great, but he hurts this team. He has a hero’s complex and has to be the one to jack up the shot. The team does not win when he’s the PG. We need a pass first guard. So, try our brains out to sign a good, pass-first guard.

DC – Yes, for the same reasons you mention. I like this guy. He can score better than you might think.

Milsap – Depends on what we can get in free agency. Love the guy, but having him small (for his position) hurts us. Also, as you cited, he takes time away from the younger guys.

Marvin – No way. It’s too bad. I like the guy in a lot of ways, but he’s been pretty bad on the floor. He hurts us, and we should let him walk. Interesting experiment, but it didn’t work out.

Randy – Yes, bring him back. The one dimensional factor hurts, especially now when he is in a funk, but our coaches could probably help him become more consistent, and even still, when he’s hot, it helps us tons. Id take a chance on him again.

Al – Maybe. If it came down to him or Milsap, I’d take Al. Offensively he’s very consistent, and really seems to be the only weapon we have been able to rely on. If we could get better talent for the price in free agency, I’d look at that.

Earl/Jamal – Both great guys. But they are out of gas. No way. It was clear when they started playing Burks @ PG, how much that helped us. Guards are blowing past them. That said, we’ve learned something from them. When you have a pass first PG, it makes this team tick. These guys are the opposite of Mo, and the team runs better (typically) when they are running the show. If these guys had Mo’s speed and scoring, but the discipline and pass-first attitude they have, we’d have a great player.

  23. Jefferson – No
    Watson – No
    Tinsley – No

    For the right price:
    Carroll – Yes…2-yr $6 million

    Millsap – Yes…3-yr $24 million

    Foye – Yes…2-yr $8 million

Mo Williams – Yes…2-yr $12 million (but only if we can’t find better options in free agency, like Jarrett Jack and Jeff Teague, or the draft, like Trey Burke)

  24. Millslapped says:

Millsap is no longer the player I know and love. But I say we sign him and use him as trade bait and let Jefferson walk. Let everyone olse go except Carroll

  25. Millslapped says:

Al CANNOT return to this team though. Let him go turn another franchise into a lottery team/border line playoff team with his empty numbers.

  26. L.K.Anderson says:

Hawks of Rockets would love AL. I have always liked him but it is time for a change.

  27. L.K.Anderson says:

For the grammar police word is Wolves coach might resign because of health issues with his wife. So should the re up resign be spelled different?? Or maybe re-sign??
