Why is Hayward starting?
Posted by: Ben on November 16th, 2012
The author's views are entirely his or her own and may not reflect the views of the Utah Jazz.I genuinely need some information here. Why is Gordon Hayward starting? I’m wondering if someone can enlighten me as to why he is such an asset to the team that he deserves a starting role. Especially when we seem to have more consistent play from Foye and Carroll; Burks could really use some time too. Gordon isn’t a big scoring threat, his defense (while good) doesn’t seem consistent, he doesn’t get a lot of assists… is there some stat that I’m not getting that makes him so valuable?
Its so easy to see the value and potential in the other youngsters. Burks has this energy that doesn’t seem to quit. Derek Favors and the Kanter-saurus Rex I feel could possibly become the greatest centers the Jazz have ever had. I don’t want to come across as a hater here. I just haven’t been seeing it from Gordy. So if someone can restore my faith in Hayward, please help me out.

Because he is white…..
Because he plays wing defense well. But yeah Burks deserves as much of a chance as Hayward has had. I think Hayward is close to reaching his ceiling.
I’ve been wondering the same thing. If sloan was coaching, Hayward would be benched no questions. Same thing with jefferson.
Relax, Hayward is a great player–I have always said Hayward reminds me of Pippen…..and this is classic blame Pippen when the team struggles (Phil Jackson whistling a “PIP!” “PIP!”). Trust me, just like I said about Kanter, and I am saying about Burks, Hayward is fn good. This is the guy that was balling against Olympians like LBJ, Lebron, Kobe, Melo–and everyone said Hayward was probably one of the best players at camp. Like I said the biggest problem with Hayward is he plays the majority of his minutes with the starters. Al is so predictable that the P&P or P&R with Hayward and Al is useless. And most of the time, Mo is dominating the ball (which is okay, not complaining), but Hayward is the 4th option, just like Marvin numbers are dropping cuz he is the 5th option. Marvin had his best game when Jazz run: Jazz cannot run when Al and Millsap are giving up layups and dunks. PERIOD.
So Hayward is a complementary player for Al and Mo, and most times Millsap. What we are not realizing, is Al is averaging 14 shot attempts per game AND Mo is averaging 14 shots per game, which equals 28 shot attempts between the two starters. Harris only averaged 8 shots per game. So there are less shots.
Having said that, Hayward still shot 50% (3-6) against 76ers, so this game should not lead anyone to believe that Hayward played bad, cuz he didn’t: only Millsap and Carroll shot better than Hayward. He is actually the most consistent player on the team. Al and Mo both went (5-14 each) and Foye went (2-7). So I think it’s unfair to put this on Hayward.
I promise you, if the Jazz dump Al and DNP Tinsley, Jazz eliminate their two worst defenders. That frees up the offense that is beginning to look a lot like last year black hole O (so that is 14 extra FG attempts to go to Hayward and others). Jazz cannot run cuz Al and Millsap D combo is just plain ole SH**!! So Jazz run the half-court sorry Al offense. Plus Tinsley is averaging 18 minutes—I repeat 18 minutes per game and 1 point per game, yes 18 minutes and 1 point. While our most athletic 2 guard is getting DNPs!!!
Corbin is a bad coach. Al is sorry. Not Hayward sucking. If Hayward got a green light like Mo (Mo takes 14 shots to get 15 points) has, Hayward (takes 11 shots to get 14 points) would average like 17-18 points per game. So let me reassure all of Jazznation: Hayward is badass; Kanter is a beast; Favors is a game-changer; Burks is dynamic and can be the Jazz best scoring threat in a year or two if he averages 20+ points. Book-it.
We are misusing the kid. When is he best? When the ball is in his hands. We do not let him initiate offense even though he is better at it then our PG. Burks would be relegated to the same position cause they would make him a jump shooter just like they have Hayward. We have talents that are not being utilized. Hayward is a premier defender. Do not believe me? Look at tonight.. Evan Turner was 0-4 in the 1st half and then he went 5-7 in the 2nd half when Marvin was on him. He allows a PER to opposing players of 10.00 which is better then some of the wing defenders in the league they consider elite like Lebron,Tony Allen and Conley.
Our wings are not at their best in the offense we run. Locke said as much in his Emptyin the Noggin
Oh and Omar said as much but against the players that are the best in the world there were days he was the best player out there. If we had a good coach who could utilize our players that would be different
Hayward is good but people are too lazy to make a decent pick to get him open. Hayward excels at pick and roll but i’ve seen about 8 picks and rolls with him all season
Cause he can d… just it
Hayward is one of the best players on the team. We don’t have a comparable wing defender, and he is currently probably the best facilitator on the team.
No doubt he’s one of our better players, but he’s definitely in a slump. We need him to step up his game, his shooting and playmaking are so valuable to this team. I think its safe to say, we’re all missing that. Sloan was so good about sending messages to players to step up their game by taking away the one thing they all want, playing time. Thats all i meant by saying Hayward and Jefferson should be benched.
I mean look at what Carroll did tonight… He hasn’t played the last few games, so when he got in, he made the most of it and absolutely dominated that 2nd quarter. Thats what happens, they go without the one thing they want, their gonna do(or should do) all that they can to make sure they get that playing time. Thats exactly what corbin needs to do with Hayward and Jefferson.
@millslapped i was thinking the same thing! Its funny tho because what triggered that thought was, hayward was the one that actually set the crappy first pick and then came off another crappy pick. haha
Hayward is what he is, he is not a great player and most likely never will be. He is not consistent and sometimes looks like he just doesn’t care, like he would rather be home playing video games. Sometimes I feel like we have another CJ Miles on our team, sometimes plays well but just isn’t starter material. Just because a player is taken high in the draft, does not mean he is going to be a great NBA player.
@Omar- Thank you for restoring my faith in the guy and explaining your position. I will sleep better tonight.
confidence. Hayward is still nba young. Same as Favors. Its just what to do when your game sucks that night . How do you compensate and add to the team to get a win that night and what do you do to get your edge back for the next game in 2 days. Its mostly mental for a few years when every fan is watching the lottery players and judging whos the bust.
You are right Deb best player in the gym with guys like Lebron,Kobe,Durant but not starter material….
Something needs to be done to let Hayward be more involved. He could be the number one player on the team if used right.Burks needs to be playing. Tinsley did get six assists but with two turnovers and o for with no points need to be dealt with. Now Watson is back. I have joined the get Calderon bandwagon..
Your welcome Ben. I believe in the Jazz—its Corbin the FO and Corbin apologist talk about how the Jazz youth will only every be mediocre, yet they talk about how Al is the most important player on the team?! HUH?! Free the Core Four already.
I am having a hard time understanding why everyone thinks that Hayward is this bad player . Sure he needs to get more consistant with his shooting but defensivley he is one of our most important pieces . He gets blocks , steals , which makes him valuable to us .
@ Deb I am not sure I see what you are seein when you say he is bein lazy and looks like he doesnt care . To me I see a young kid that tries to do his part whether he is scoring , facilitating , or even with his defense . I do however see that in almost all the rest of the players on this team these last few games .
Before we start blowing up this team lets get them more motivated . In the Wizzards game I saw Corbin Tryin different lineups to see what worked and what didnt , this is what you all are raggin on him about sayin he is a bad coach because he doesnt try new things . Well geuss what he did and what did the players do ? Most of them played like they didnt want this or any other game .
This is what I see is wrong with this team , no desire to win these games . If any of them showed half the heart that Carrol has shown we probably won most of our games . So I think pointing fingers at just one player or coach is just bein a hater because it takes all players to play as a team .
That is my 10 cents worth .
