Al or Millsap:SLtrib guys say…..

Brian Smith(@tribjazz) and Tony Jones(@TonyAggieville) of the Salt Lake Tribune had a live video web chat today all about the Jazz.  The very first question of the chat basically asked if the Jazz end up having to choose between Big Al and Millsap, who should they keep to compliment Favors?  I know that there was one post within a week or so that blew up about signing Sap to an extension.  Well the both of these guys said if they had to choose right now, they would pick to keep Big Al.  They think his offensive abilities pair well with Favors’ defensive abilities and that Favors is more of a power forward than a center.  Here is the link to their chat, you can go and listen/watch the replay:

David Locke was asked a similar question in his vokle video web chat just days ago and he mentioned that in his perfect world we would sign Sap to an extension this summer, making him more willing to come off the bench because he’s not worried about money and contract issues, then start Favors and Al next year and evaluate if they should/can keep Al at the end of next season.

Interesting stuff.  To me, this is one of the biggest decisions the Jazz will have to make that will impact the future.  With both of their contracts expiring next year along with Raja’s and Devin’s, there are a lot of options.  Salaries will play a huge part in this as well.  What do you guys think?  Are the trib guys right?  Or is Al’s pick and roll defense and huge contract enough to make you choose Paul?

Favors and Millsap play better offense and defense together, favors scores better and more often when Al is not in the lineup with him, Als defense leaves alot to be desired, the pick and roll runs right past him, I say if one of them goes let it be Al.

This has been hashed over how many hundreds of times?? Let the Jazz brass figure it out.

  3. TACOREV says:

Definitely keep Millsap, trade Jefferson. It’s not a tough decision at all. Jefferson does a couple things really well, and several things really poorly. Millsap does a lot of things well but isn’t terrible at anything, and continues to get better with each year. He also plays better with the young guys, and makes those around him better. Jefferson is great at scoring, but he isn’t that efficient, which means having him as the #1 scoring option isn’t going to take us very far. And with Jefferson’s playing style, he needs to be the #1 option in order for him to play to his potential.

  4. @LK I just thought it was interesting to hear two different perspectives that are close to the team on the issue.

  5. @Larry N, and Taco, I tend to think the same way and so do most people on these boards. That’s why I was very surprised at what these guys were saying.

  6. Wow… Well I do not understand how people that cover basketball are not very smart about basketball. Jefferson defense can not be helped by Favors just being in the lineup. His man is setting the pick on the pick and roll HE ALONE has to step up and make a change in how he does things. Favors can guard the rim but a pick and roll it does not matter who is on the floor with him.

Jefferson also on the offensive end screws our offense over. His hold and pound game is not conducive to a well run offense. “Center-forward Al Jefferson has been both an offensive stud in the low post and an inadequate defender on a losing team for his entire career. Forward Paul Millsap is a tireless but undersized power forward best utilized in tandem with a defensive-oriented rim protector.” That is what SI had to say about our big man duo.. Right now I think Favors is a Center who can play with Millsap and Kanter can play with Millsap I do not think Jefferson can play with either of them very effectively..

I have said this before maybe we look to take a 7 footer in the draft either Zeller or Leonard.. I think both could play with both of our youngsters..

I do not think there should be a debate though Jefferson should be the one to go.

  7. keep both. move Sap to #3 and GH to #2

  8. L.K.Anderson says:

A lot will depend on who and what would be offered. I think Sap will get an extension and Al will sign for much less and stick around as the bench for a couple of years. (Beats Elston.) But if a good offer comes around the Jazz should pull the trigger. Rockets need a center and have a extra starting point guard. This would be a multi player trade.Harris has been playing great as of late and could be trade bait as well.

  9. Danny says:

I’m the one that actually asked the Trib guys the question and thought they gave a very interesting response. I have a couple responses to their responses and your post. I think it depends on what you see Favors as. Right now I think he plays his best at center and that he plays the best with Millsap. Second, though ideally Millsap would be your 6th man and play the three but I don’t see him doing that even if he gets an extension. And that is a credit to him. He is not just about getting paid. He wants to play. Ultimately, I think it will come down to what LK said and come down to the best offer.

  10. @Dallan: Brian T Smith is an idiot. This guy writes all kinds of bullish*t articles trying to stir up controversy. He grasps at straws and writes sensationalistic and misleading articles.

Just ignore him. Hopefully he’ll go away.

  11. Gerald says:

I think Jazzed uponit just wanted to type down “GH” because well, I would have wanted to also if no one else had, haha.

  12. I think that we need both of them. I am loving our power in the front court. No other team can match us. Trade kanter!

  13. But only trade kanter for the next ray Allen…

  14. I would be willing to part with Kanter if we had an opportunity to move up in the draft and acquire either Gilchrist, Barnes, or Beal.

  15. Kanter will be better then Jefferson in two years.. You heard it here first!! NOTE IT!!

  16. Plus he is all ready better defensively!! Jeffersn is a drag on his teams. There is a reason did not want him and Love together he took to much away from him and everyone else. It is not that they were in the same space cause Love is a three man.. Jefferson is the problem with our offensive flow. He is our problem with our pick and roll. We will never win a championship with him on the team.

Same reasons Carmelo will never win a championship Jefferson will never wn

  17. Omar says:

@Dallan agreed!!!!!!! First half of the magic game!!! Damn Big Al sorry ass D, P&R D, and ya! Kanter got all net 18 foot jumper. I seen Big Al gone by draft.

  18. Peter Barney says:

SL Trib., their bias remarks and statements about our Jazz players, now Big Al, or Big shot Paul M. crazed trade for who???
