In his interview with 1320kfan yesterday, KOC made some comments about the trade exception that we have from the Memo trade. We have until right around Christmas time to use it and it’s good for up to 10 million. Because the other team basically gets nothing in return, the Jazz will talking with teams who are looking to clear cap space, playing time, or both. This is especially interesting right now because of the new CBA rules that will go into effect after this next season. Teams that have big payrolls may be looking to trim down because there will be a significant raise in the luxury tax. So here is a list of possibilities that I think might be available and realistic for something like this:
Marvin Williams-SF-Atlanta Hawks-8.2 million owed next season with a player option for 7.5 the season after. The Hawks owe 60 million next season in only 6 contracts. That leaves no room to fill out their roster. Marvin looks like the odd man out. He shot 50% from 3 in the playoffs this year. I think he might be able to blossom in a little bigger role without ball hogs like Johnson and Smith around him. Who knows?
Mo Williams-PG-LAC-He has a player option this season for 8.5 million. Expensive if we use him as a backup but it would be a one year rental so next year he’s off the books. He shoots about 38% from 3 so we know that would help us out. Clippers could try to trade him but I don’t know what they would get. They need to make cap space to get a real SG and playing time for Eric Bledsoe and Billups.
Shawn Marion-SF-Dallas-Under contract for 3 more seasons and max’s out at 9.3 million his last year. He knows how to win, shoots a decent % from the field, and is a great rebounder. Dallas might want to unload him if they sign D Will, especially if they try to resign Jason Terry and Jason Kidd to back him up.
J.J. Reddick or Jason Richardson-SG-Orlando-either of these guys could be available depending on what happens with Dwight. Both can shoot the 3, Reddick is better than J-Rich in that respect, but either would add offensive production from the wings. Their contracts are similar in the 5-6.5 million range. I would probably prefer Reddick though.
Anthony Morrow or Gerald Wallace-SF&SG-Brooklyn-I’m guessing they will look at various options if they can pull of getting Dwight Howard so it’s possible. However either of these guys could be in the trade that gets him there. But Morrow is a good 3pt shooter and a lot cheaper. Wallace is a physical, high energy SF but is 9.5 million if he opts in for this last year of his contract though, but only a one year rental.
Personally, I like Morrow or Reddick because they are low risk, high reward, and address our 3 pt shooting needs. The two Williams’ are intriguing to me also. I would probably pass on the others however Wallace might really try to perform well if he opts in and is playing for a contract.
