4 way deal talks Jazz involved
Posted by: Brian H on September 24th, 2010
The author's views are entirely his or her own and may not reflect the views of the Utah Jazz. The Denver Nuggets are having serious discussions about a four-way trade that would landCarmelo Anthony with the New Jersey Nets, according to sources with knowledge of the negotiations.
The proposed deal, sources said, also would involve the Utah Jazz and theCharlotte Bobcats. It would deliver Nets rookie forward Derrick Favors, Jazz veteran Andrei Kirilenko and multiple first-round picks to Denver in exchange for their franchise player, potentially bringing a resolution to Anthony’s uncertain future before the Nuggets hold their first practice of the new season.
Sources told ESPN.com that the deal, which has yet to be finalized, also would send former All-Star point guard Devin Harris to Charlotte, with Bobcats forward Boris Diaw moving to Utah.

not sure bout it :\ but 17mln contract of ak for 2 year 9mln of diaw`s its good for millers family, but IMO ak can be more useful for jazz than diaw
yeah, Im not sold on this one either :/
I talked about this very thing in a previous post. That the Jazz would try to trade AK to lower the luxury tax situation they find themselves. A cost cutting deal similar to the two deals they made last season. Of course, this deal is still just proposed at this point, but it does indicate the Jazz are looking to move Kirilenko. I’ve gone on record in my last post as saying I’m not an AK fan…HOWEVER…I don’t really like this deal. I’m even less of a fan of Boris Diaw then I am of Kirilenko. Diaw can probably put up similar offensive numbers, but he isn’t the all around contributor that Kirilenko can be. It wouldn’t be a terrible trade, but if I was calling the shots, I probably wouldn’t pull the trigger.
Here’s just a couple reasons why i like the deal.(Not saying it’s what i’d do, but just some things to think about)
1. i checked the ppg last season for both kirilienko and Diaw and they were both at about 11 points.
2. Diaw has played with Raja before and they had good chemistry.
3. Diaw is a hustler and getting us under the Lux tax with 8 mil or so extra with possible trades or whatever koc wants to do with it doesn’t sound that bad.
Just some thoughts.
PS. AK has been way to up and down the last couple of years…
I’m thinking there are probably other players involved in this possible deal in order to make it all work under the salary cap.
I am not a huge AK fan either, but my thoughts on AK producing this year, being a contract year, have been on the optimistic side of things, I think me not being sold on this deal is my lack of knowledge of Boris Diaw.
It may turn out great for us. but I don’t know.
i would almost rather see derrick favors here instead but im not really sure of what to think about this
Boris Diaw Scouting report
“Diaw is one of the most unique players in the league, a 6-foot-8 forward who handles the ball like a point guard, sees the floor and is unselfish to a fault. He’s far too passive and coaches constantly cajole him to shoot more frequently, but he’s retained a bad habit of passing up easy shots to force passes. Though a poor long-range shooter until last season, Diaw has always shot decently from midrange and hit 42.0 percent of his long 2s last year, his fifth straight year at 42 percent or better.
Diaw doesn’t rebound or block many shots but is an excellent frontcourt defender. Because he moves so well, he’s money in pick-and-roll coverage, plus he has enough size and toughness to defend most 4s on the block. He also can defend 3s on the wing, where his 6-8 frame becomes a real asset, and his unselfish spirit is helpful on D as he’s a willing team defender. Both Phoenix (by 4.5 points per 100 possessions) and Charlotte (by 2.5 points) defended better with him on the court than off it, and this trend has been ongoing for several years ”
Aks scouting report
“With his insanely long arms and instinctive timing, Kirilenko is a talented shot-blocker who excels at sneaking up behind players near the basket to swat their tries away. He does this with much greater frequency when he plays power forward than on the wing, however, as he’s too far away from the action when he guards the perimeter. At either spot, he’s a quality defender, but he can dominate games from the 4 position. Utah’s logjam at that spot is a problem, however, and his lack of muscle requires him to play with a beefy center. He’s vulnerable to post-ups even against 3s because he lacks the strength to push them away from the rim.
Offensively, Kirilenko possesses an odd array of skills. He has the length to finish around the basket and he’s a good ball handler and passer, but he also has weak hands and loses a lot of balls in traffic. Kirilenko doesn’t own a go-to offensive move but instead relies on cuts to the basket, second shots and the occasional jumper to supply his scoring. He draws tons of fouls too, ranking third among small forwards in free-throw attempts per field-goal attempt.”
Upside
Hopefully having a player that gets injured a lot less, hes a terrific ball handler and a pretty good defender although he doesn’t block as many shots as AK (0.7 to 1.2). He has similar length but is a more athletic player his biggest knock is he actually passes to often overlooking good shots.
Downside
Not nearly as good of a help defense shot blocker but really AK is pretty average every where else. He is a good energy guy and the team seems to feed off of that but perhaps the veteran additions would help. Ak gets to the line alot more often as well.
Whether this trade would help us or not would be seen in how healthy Ak could be next year, obviously there is no way to know this other than looking at their history but if Ak goes down again next year, Utah would probably be thankful we pulled the trigger. AK is the better defender but Diaw actually is considered a pretty good one himself. I really think it would be OK value for AK not great, also there is a hope that he would come back when his contract expired, but who knows how a trade might affect his feelings.
you talking about my man Boris, so i can help you, first there is no doubt that Boris is a basketball genius, he’s a swiss knife, he can do everything on the field, but there is a problem, when he was younger, he was a terrific athlete, with a terrific jump, but now i’m not sure he can jump more than ten centimeters, a stupid coach in phoenix have decided to play him in the frontcourt, he took some weight, he deteriorate his physique, and since he control nothing, he’s too fat and quite pathetic on the field like an old Shawn Kemp, it’s a shame because he was great…..
i prefer to keep AK
Please NO!!! Kirilenko for Diaw, thats no a good deal.Utah needs kirilenko this season,if the change him for someone of Charlote make it for Wallace at least. Ok the have a similar numbers last seasson, but Diaw plays in Charlote not in Utah…(sorry im from Spain,i dont talk english very well)
I hate this trade. Salary dump written all over it. AK will have a great year this year barring injury. He has got to be psyched knowing his team needs him more this year than maybe ever before. And he’s playing for a new contract. KEEP AK!!!
Just something that seemed semi likely via trademachine. If this were the scenario I would probably pull the trigger…
http://games.espn.go.com/nba/tradeMachine?tradeId=2esgh9b
Apparently, Quinton Ross is coming to the Jazz as well, along with Boris Diaw.
The road through AK’s bloated contract isn’t going to be as clean as we may all hope and dream it will. Diaw is a nice addition – but… this leaves us thin at the wing. CJ / Hayward really will get some “burn” this year. Should this all go down as it’s being reported, Jeremy Evans or Ryan Thompson should make the final roster.
I keep seeing random mentions of Quentin Ross being tossed in … I hope not, what a waste of space.
You’ve been paying his rediculous salary for like 6 years. Just pay the man one more year than sign him for next year for life 5 or six million. Keep ak.
Were not “thin” on the wings. With C.J. Miles, Boris Diaw, Raja Bell, Quentin Ross, and Gordon Hayward the Jazz have lots of options. D-Will can also play some two-guard, with the addition of Earl Watson at the point. Thompson and Evans are also possibilities.
as of right now …
wings= CJ / Hayward / AK (unless he’s dealt) [ DEPTH! ]
shooting guard = Raja Bell [ DEPTH! ]
PG = DWill / Ronnie
PF = Paul Millsap / Al Jefferson
C = Francisco Elson / Memo
Non-guaranteed contracts include: Ryan Thompson, Earl Watson, Othyus Jeffers, Jeremy Evans, Sunny D.
Yet to sign: Big Fes
Please quit saying DWill can play some 2-guard. Let’s be real; he stated he dislikes it, even when/if he and Ronnie P / Sunny D are on the floor it is obvious that DWill is playing the point.
[ DEPTH! ] marks a spot we need depth .. aka .. thin.
I don’t like this move i don’t think we need anther big guy ur trading a versitile player in AK that can play both small and Power and shooting guard and, heck he can play piont as well for a small Power Forward it doesn’t make much sense to me. I would ask for more in the deal, because you already got paul milsap and, AL Jefferson at pwoer forward why would you go out and, get anther one? doesn’t sound to smart to me, i do like Boris Being from AZ i have had alot of opportunities to watch the guy and, I do like his game but, it just doesn’t make much sense to me when you got two other power forwards already.
Alos yeah jason you have to stop saying Dwill can play the two spot He is to short for one and, for anther he is a true piont One of the best true pionts in the league with only like three other players so I would stop say that about Dwill
Most teams only go 8-10 deep into their bench. If Raja and Gordon split time at the two guard (around 24 minutes a night), and Miles and Kirilenko/Diaw split time at small forward (around 24 minutes) that alone takes up all the time permitted in a 48 minute game. You don’t need to be more then 2 deep at any position. The Jazz stated in summer league they thought Hayward was better suited to the shooting guard, then the small forward (though he can certainly play either). Also, Watson does have a guaranteed deal. Watson is more of a true point guard then Price, and I think one of several reasons they obtained him was to give D-Will more time at the two spot. He’s definitely tall enough, tough enough, and has a good enough jumper to play two-guard on occasion (and he may very well be asked too depending on injuries, foul situation, and match-ups). Billups and Lawson do the same thing in Denver.
This trade is interesting because we say the main thing we would lose from AK is defense and if both Diaw and Ross are included, both are very good defenders especially Ross who is almost considered elite at it.
Ross is the same age as AK at 29 but nearly useless on the offensive side. He is listed at 6-6 and a SF but would probably play the 2 and 3. Diaw is in the same boat as being listed at 6-8 and a pf but would probably be at the 3 most of the time. I dont know if this trade would actually make us better, in fact I would probably look at it as a lateral move at best which has the potential to be vertical if AK gets hurt again on another team.
Rotation without trade (my best guess anyways)
PG Dwill, Watson, Price
SG Miles/Bell, Jeffers
SF Ak/Miles, Hayward, Evans
Pf Millsap/Jefferson, Memo
C Jefferson/Memo, Elson
Rotation with it
PG Same
SG Miles/Bell, Ross
SF Diaw/Miles, Hayward
PF Same
C Same
I do think this trade would leave us with a slightly more athletic team (depending on how Diaw shows up to camp) and with better man defenders in Diaw and Ross, I do think it could hurt us offensively a little bit as AK is so good at getting to the line
Trevor…in my opinion Diaw has always played more the small forward position (which is where the Jazz coaches will probably choose to play him most of the time).
I have very little doubt that if we aquire Diaw he would play the 3 for us since he has nice size but is also quick enough to gaurd both front court posistions.
please dont send Denver our any weapons! Keep AK47 till he retires!!!
As a frenchman, I’ll be delighted to see Boris Diaw in a Jazz uni. At least they would start speaking about the Jazz in my country, not only the Spurs or the Bulls.
As French dude said, today he is not an upgrade with respect to AK, except -of course- for the salary viewpoint (and maybe for injury tendency).
That said, Boris would fit very well in the Jazz system and would be effective quite quickly. He may also see this trade as a new chance for him, and he has the character to take advantage of the situation. He had a good world championship in a disminished french team, and showed particularly good passing abilities. I think it is important for the Jazz to have a good passer at the 3-4 spot, something that Booz provided last year. Let’s be positive !
I don’t know about this trade if it actually goes down then i guess we do get a good veteran out of this AK has been huge on defense for us but diaw is good on both sides of the ball i don’t like the idea of opening the season to AK in Utah and playing against him a bunch of times he is a very good shot blocker and good inside scorer but we would be more deadly with 4 3 point shooters in the starting line up plus Hayward off the bench.Ive also read that Carmelo Anthony is more willing to resign with the nets then he was when his trade rumors began. overall i think this is a great trade for us if it goes down were a great team either way no matter what happens
Something to consider, AK will become a FA next season, who’s to say we don’t go get him next season, then we end up with Diaw AND AK…..intriguing…..
He’s too slow and big to be an SF. We were knee deep in our bench last year, let’s prepare to be doing the same this year by appropriating proper depth at each position – even if that means a couple of “hybrid” guys.
I’m still 50/50 on this trade rumor.
I like it, but I don’t. I like it until Memo is back and healthy; then I don’t.
It doesn’t address our need to get bigger (necessarily); if you put him at the 3, then he’s a big 3, but you can’t tell me he can guard Durant or even CJ Miles.
Two words to think about: “Lateral quickness”
I don’t like it at all! I am pouting like a little girl because i love AK. I know he has that bloated contract. I get that. But its one more year. Just one more year!
Plus why would we ever want to help Denver get asessts?
Just got to love it when the media puts out possible rumors and everyones on the band wagon saying yeah its good, or no its not. Regardless if the Jazz are trying to get under the salary cap (which they are) they are not going to give up a big and go small. Do you think Greg Miller would really want to give up AK for Boris Diaw? Hmmm, smart person would know it simply would not happen. Miller has said numerous of times, he is only going to pull trigger on trades that would improve the team and he knows to contend for the championship you pretty much have to be over the salary cap so this will trade will not happen under the proposal that an unreliable source has put out.
If the Jazz did get involved in this deal to help New Jersey land Carmelo Anthony and got another big out of the deal or a trade exception like they did for Boozer so they could go after someone then possibly then I could see them getting involved, but not just AK for Diaw, Greg Miller for sure would say PASS
@ Michael
Then you actually dont know very much about Diaw, Charlotte was involved in other trade rumors this off season but nixed a few of them because the Bobcats did not want to part with him. He fits our system, is younger and cheaper, has a similar offensive skill set (neither player is great behind the arc and both a good defenders)
Also it graduated from pure speculation to possible truth bearing rumor when Stein reported it followed by a half dozen other credible sporting news sources( Sports Illustrated, Yahoo, Espn, Fox News to name a few)
I think people we all have a tendency to over value or own player while undervaluing others. I have heard many a time how we shouldn’t trade AK except for guys like Gerald Wallace or Danny Granger, common now.
AK is injury prone and hasn’t played a full 82 game season for the last 3 years
He is still a great help defender but not a great one on one anymore (notice Sloan has put him on elite players less and less) a good energy guy but a 17 mil price tag? think about it.
He has either disappeared in previous playoff series or been to injured to actually play.
He is only average on offense with his best asset being getting to the line, he cant shoot the 3 with any relative consistency.
His contract has KILLED the jazz for numerous years in which the last few Im sure they have fielded offers for him.
He is 29 at the Apex of his career is at least 3 or 4 years removed.
Once he finishes in Denver then there would be a strong possibility he comes back to Utah for less money
this is killing me! Boris freaking Diaw? seriously? AK is one of the highest paid players in the league, and we are trading him for some washed up fat french dude who was never that good to begin with? He might be a nice guy and all, but we are looking to win a championship here. In the immortal words of Gob Bluth, Come on!!!
The salaries dont even match up anyways. But I worked my magic on the ESPN Trade Machine and this is the best I could do.
http://games.espn.go.com/nba/tradeMachine?tradeId=2744sqq
The Jazz should do it if and only if they can get Favors.
This isn’t a good trade for us. Diaw is a good player but Ak is just a machine. Blocks and steals are what we need and Ak is averages 1 more than diaw on both of those. Plus AK is one of the best wing defenders in the game right now.
First of all, anything that gets Carmelo off the Nuggets, and ships him to a team in the Eastern Conference, is a good thing for the Jazz, and every other team in the Northwest Division. I’d much rather face AK in Denver, then Melo. Favors will take time to develop. This trade basically eliminates Denver from serious contention in the West this season.
Second, several on here are selling Diaw short. He’s one of the best passing bigmen in the league, is a better outside shooter then AK, and like Kirilenko, can play two positions. He also comes almost 8 million dollars cheaper. This move gives the Jazz much more roster flexibility from a financial stand point. The only negative I can see in any of this, is if Diaw isn’t in good physical shape (being overweight), and therefore doesn’t play up to his ability level. I do think there are a certain group of Jazz/Kirilenko fans that severely overrate his worth. His stats over the last 3 seasons are probably almost indentical in most categories to Diaw’s. Who knows, maybe this trade still falls through, and all these AK supporters will get to cheer their golden boy on next season in a Jazz uniform (while that scrub Boris Diaw puts up almost identical numbers in Charlotte).
I actually didn’t see that we’d also get Quinton Ross. With the 2 of them it makes it better for us, but I think Ak is going to have a great season. Is it really worth possibly throwing that away. Then again he could have a big injury plagued season…
It goes both ways.
looks like its a go, melo has approved the deal. welcome to utah boris diaw. http://twitter.com/tribjazz
I’m furious, absolutely furious. I am always patient and hope for the best with Utah management but we will be losing basically our ONLY shot blocker and most in depth player to save some bucks. It’s a contract year. SUCK IT UP and let him resign.
Apparently according to sources Melo’ has approved the sign to go to new Jersey so looks like this is going down. I hope the Jazz come to their senses before then.
AK will have a break out year if he stays with UTAH. If He leaves……I’ll be ready to give up for good.
heres a better article on this http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/basketball/2010/09/24/2010-09-24_source_nets_in_serious_talks_to_land_carmelo.html
i agree with colby Everyone say Boris and, Ross are good defenders but, there is two thing wrong with that one I haven’t seen Ross name hardly anywhere so i think that’s just a rumor and, Boris doesn’t play defence like AK does. does anyone in here realize what we are giving up? Are best shot blocker, passer and, the one person on the team that knows how to get to the line. Not to mention a guy that play play almost any position you put him at and, your getting what for him a better shooter that sounds like a far trade, yeah If are management is going to be this stupid i got one thing to say go denver!!!!!!!
Well I was excited about this season until I heard of this bull sh** trade for that scrub Boris Diaw!!!! good move KOC let’s just take away half of our defense and get rid of AK! This is stupid! always trying to penny pinch! I’m so disappointed in this! we had a perfect starting 5 with D-WILL, BELL, AK, SAP,& AL J, SO LET’S JUST GO F*** IT ALL UP! If your going to trade for AK then at lease get somebody equivalent! (JAZZ MANAGEMENT = F***ING RETARDS!)
If Greg Miller doesn’t have the gall to take this one buy the cojanes then sell the team to someone who will.
My complete and utter excitement for the season is shattered.
I think this is a good deal Ak is out like 5 times more then diaw produces just as much and is half the money. Diaw will fit good in Jerry’s rotation and system he proved that on the bobcats that it wasn’t just Nash amking him better and he helps carry the Brazil squad.
John Hollinger reporting it to be about 13 million dollar tax savings for the Jazz. It’s dollars against talent.
The Jazz better be making this trade only to make another move! Sell the team to Dave Checketts!! a man that can make moves to win a championship!!!!
The Millers need to sell the team to someone with more oney. This is pure crap.
@lil ec DIAW HAS NO D! He has no shot blocking and is fat!
AK is our shotblocking,2nd best passer and best defender.
Teams are going to dropping 115 points a night on us.
So close to the season,Diaw has to start fresh and learn a new system. I’m ready to give up.
watche, AK will have an incredible season this year too and the Nuggets will go to the playoffs and the Millers will be “Durr, oops, guess we should have kept him, herp derp”
jazz fan there isn;t much out there we can get any more most of your free agents are gone and, We don’t have to much to deal with. we had keys to win this season and, they go and throw away maybe are main key to winning this year. We know what Dwill can do and, Jefferson but, i was interested to see if AK stepped it up this year or not. if he did we could have made some niose. Now with Diaw we will be a playoff team like every other year but, that’s it nothing more. We are not a run and, gun team like other teams in this league and with AK gone Colby is right teams are going to be dropping 115 piont or more a night on us and, the jazz can’t keep up with that
If Ak does great, People will complain “we should’ve kept him.” But if he has injury plagued season, again. those same people will say “glad we dealt him.”
This saves money plus we get 2 wings Diaw and Ross. Not bad, but if it goes down then look for the jazz to make one more move.
If we are getting rid of him because he is injury prone you might as well just give up half are team Okur, Paul Dwill half our team seems to have injuries every year
This sight caught my eye a bit it say we pick up Ross and Jr Smith and Boris
http://www.nba-trade-rumors.com/
If that’s true maybe I’m ok with it JR has a lot of talent and, if he can keep his attiude in check he can be a great player. If we get three guys to it must mean the jazz have some one else to deal with as well because we would have to many people on the roster unless Fes doesnt come back.I still think it’s a bad idea but, JR makes it a bit more compelling to deal AK
The difference between AK and the rest of the team is that AK is inconsistent and when he gets injured he’s out for several months.
Deron, Paul, Okur aren’t out that much, Okur has a major injury but other than that he’s healthy.
Every team has injuries, but AK is the most injury prone player on our team. He hasn’t consistently produced in several years and only shines for short periods of time.
I love AK but he’s too inconsistent for a Vet of his experience, and too many injuries from him.
I’m a bit surprised by the negative reaction … Many Jazz fans have been calling out KOC to unload AK’s contract since he cried in Houston. I seriously doubt he will be the same player next year – he looked awful in the playoffs, like his calf was still bothering him. Plus, D-Will has never liked AK.
i disagree with that andrew but, hey if that’s how you feel Ak misses about 10 to 15 games a year. wich is a few but, i think half of the problem with the consistantcy is the guys minutes. Jerry can never decide what he is doing with AK. Does he come off the bench should i start him what position should i put him at how is anyone suppose to be consisttant when they don’t even know what they are doing anygiven night. He has always been and anchor for us on the defensive side no matter what and, evver since we have had Dwill Boozer and, Okur it’s had to fit him in on the offencesive side.
I remember so many games over the last three seasons when we were giving up 115ppg WITH Andre on the floor. His defensive stats have steadily dropped over the last four years. It’s been years since he played at an all-star level, and stayed healthy on a consistent basis. Why, all of a sudden, this season, do some think he’s going to return to all-star form, and be some kind of savior?
Well the deal isn’t done and might not fall through. If we keep Ak, then i’ll be glad and hopefully he won’t miss 2 months again. AK is a great player and hopefully he’ll do great things, if he stays.
On the other hand, Diaw and Ross could really help us out defensively (though not as good as AK to be clear) but offensively would be even greater. With only missing 9 games in the past 3 or 4 years shows that he probably will only miss 1 or 2 games.
There are pluses to both sides.
If this goes through even though I dont want it to, I just hope we get more than Diaw and maybe Ross, I would like a draft pick or two, but I would love to get Aaron Afflalo.
Pay AK 17 mil for one more year, then after his contract is up I’m sure he will take a major paycut for like 3 or 4 mil a year! 2011 should be a year of getting familiar with each others games, then next year the cash will be flowing out of the Millers AS*ES THEN WE CAN GO FOR A HIGH CALIBER PLAYER!!!! I KINDA WAS WISHING WE WOULD GET MELO BUT GOD KNOWS WE WILL NEVER GET A PLAYER THAT IS THAT GOOD O-WELL I JUST DON’T GIVE A F*** ANYMORE!, IM JUST GOING TO SIT BACK AND PREY THE JAZZ MANAGEMENT KNOWS WHAT THE F*** THEY ARE DOING! THAT’S ALL WE CAN HOPE FOR! IF AK GET’S TRADED TO DENVER, I HOPE HE BREAKS HIS FOOT LIKE YAO HAHAHAHAHA- YEAH YEAH YEAH THIS IS ALL IN CAPS WOOP D FUC*IN DO
Just thought of this, I doubt the Nuggets sign AK to an extension. Ak becomes a free agent next year, Jazz sign him for a reasonable price.
It all depends on if Ak signs an extension and still wants to be with the Jazz.
Jazz Fan, shut up.
Jaycee go eat a di*k!
Nobody likes what you’re saying. We’re talking about the trade and you’re just b*tchin and whining because you don’t like the Jazz organization and where there headed. If you don’t like it, shutup and go jump on the Gaykers bandwagon.
Hope you get banned from this site.
I vote Jazz Fan can’t post anymore, the dude is a moron
I vote that me and your mom go to Olive Garden Arne, we will meet Carlos Boozer there, and me and Carlos will tag team that dirty wh*re! hahahaha sucka
@Arne: I thought we had a moderator? He must have a day off. Just seen on KSL they asked AK about the trade and he said it was news to him. AK called his agent and he knew nothing of a trade. Sounds like a great big blown up rumor. Everyone be calm, take two asprin and look at this sight in the morning..
+infinity to Jaycee and Arne. Get a moderator over here to ban this fool.
As Jaycee sez, as this trade has been posed on ESPN, the salaries don’t match up. If JR Smith is included, as Trevor has found, then I suppose they do (trades must be to 80% of salary match).
The $ saved that you all are talking about:
Smith $6 mil
Diaw $9 mil
Ross $1 mil
= $16 mil
AK $16.5 mil
So $1 mil saved by this trade. Neato.
Diaw seems like he got content with being a role player. JR is not a stable performer, is selfish, and barely shoots .400. Ross is D only.
AK is better than all of them put together if healthy, motivated, and when playing at PF. Perhaps too many “ifs”.
Maybe Diaw could decide not to fade away. Maybe JR could mature.
I suppose Sloan could test JR out there every night, and pull him as soon as he does something dumb, like Sloan used to do with CJ. I suppose Diaw would achieve quiet role-player type goals out there. And if Ross is actually a lock-down defender, that would be helpful.
I wish the best for AK and want him to be on the Jazz when it all comes together for him/the Jazz again, but, I have to admit, the trade has some upside.
Andrew will you just take a hike? quit trying to get involved with grown folkes biz little boy!
hahahaahha I feed off all you clowns, I enjoy watching you guys trip out! hahahahaha
Wait, did you just call yourself a grownup? Cause by the way that you were talking and swearing, I would have guessed that you are actually 14yrs old.
Anyways, back to the topic, I have read that the Nets also want the Bobcats to send DJ Augustine, but the Bobcats don’t want to and that is one of the main reasons that the trade is being held up. I hope the trade just overall doesn’t go through.
Jaycee thanks, again I feed off you
keep them coming! I LOVE IT
12? he hasn’t round the double digits yet. Hikes are lame, so go get stuck on one and do us all a favor, shutup.
was reading on hoopshype.com that the Jazz may not get just Diaw in this trade but potential JR Smith, Arron Afflalo and/or Quinton Ross. Afflalo is one of the best defenders in the league and he can score about 10ppg. I’d love to add him to our team. Without adding another piece to this trade that would make Utah better immediately it’s NOT worth it. AK brings too much to the table. The Jazz are smarter than to make this trade and just let our squade become worse. They must have more up their sleave KOC is smarter than that. Have some confidence in that much my friends. We all need to keep our fingers crossed that Utah get’s Diaw with JR Smith and than Utah can us JR as a trade chip to pick up someone more suited for our squad. Another possibility is Arron Afflalo-he’s one of the best defenders in the league and will average close to 10 a game. He didnt’ get many shot’s in Denver he’d really do well here. I could care less for Q. Ross. I don’t see why Utah would even pick him up other than to come closer to the 80% of AK’s Salary. Otherwise he’s not for us. There’s some exciting business brewing my fellow Jazz fans!! let’s keep our fingers crossed.
oops excuse the repeat there, that’s what I get for multi-tasking.
I ont get why some people would be so concerned about Diaw showing up out of shape as Jefferson was said to have the same problem. Diaw is also regarded in some respects as a BETTER defender than Kirilenko with much higher regarded on the ball defense. I hate people who dont know anything about a player yet think they can tell us so matter of fact how terrible they are (probably without ever watching them play).
Not saying this trade is a home run, if it even happens which with its complexity there is a good chance it wont, but if it did Diaw is a decent replacement and Ross would give us a terrific defensive specialist.
People who say Ak will break out this year are the same people who have been saying it for the last 4 years, his production has fallen off. Over tha past six seasons he has missed an average of 24.4 percent of his games or roughly 20 games a year, last year he missed 24 games as well as our first playoff series.
Van I agree with you. Diaw is a better on ball defender than AK. The only thing that is missing there is the entangibles that AK bring’s to the table. Which very few if any other players can match. I don’t mind this trade but realistically it doesn’t make us better unless the funds that we gain from dumping AK’s contract are used on another player. Initially their stats look similiar but AK is much much more efficient. Unfortunately Boris is another undersized big man which is what Utah has and has always had. Can we get Tomic over hear already?
The Jazz can really accomplish a lot with this extra money from AK’s contract.
I was hoping we could use Diaw at the 3 and maybe as a backup at the 4 although he is the same size as Millsap. Unless we get another quality player or two the Jazz should bow out of this deal
Sure the can. Money talks. However with the collective bargaining agreement I believe that the trade between Utah and whomever for AK’s contract will have to reach 80% of AK’s contract. Meaning that Boris Diaw ( 9mill) simply won’t cute it, so Utah is looking at potential pick ups of J.R. Smith(6+Mill) and Arron Afflalo or Q. Ross (1+mill) That’s doing something. However if for some reason I’m missing something with the CBA than Utah will have approximately 8+Million which is plenty my fellow Chase.
The only thing is Van that Boris is a 4/5 despite the fact that he’s 6′8″ but you never know. How about this line up. D-will, CJ, Diaw, Milsap and AJ. That’s a big, nasty line-up that I wouldn’t mind watching.
to be honest I always thought Diaw was considered athletic enough to play the 3 when in good shape, but I havent consistantly watched him play since his phoenix days
Chases, the Cap Rules make it impossible to use any ‘extra’ money left over from AK’s contract or deficit in a trade. If they could trade for an $8M player, the ‘extra’ would be gone. You could NOT go sign a free agent with it.
Why? The jazz are over the cap. That means we can only use ‘exceptions’. The biggest of which is about $2.8m.
Read up on it on this post I made a few weeks ago:
http://www.utahjazz360.com/olwildcory723/quick-guide-to-nba-cap-rules/
It specifically addresses AKs situation.
Ok that makes sense. So these “exceptions” per the CBA could reach out to multiple players up towards AK’s 17.8 million correct. I was unaware that we were over the cap. That changes everything. I was under the impression that with AK’s contract gone we’de have much more than 2.8 which will cover a couple of the little guys. So…the Jazz need to get more than Boris from this Trade period or the bottom line is we get worse. I like Boris but we need more for AK than just him.
Exactly. Except Boris is an 80% AK replacement for 50% of the cost and due to the luxury tax situation, would save the Jazz upwards of $18M in actual money, not just salary money.
So you can see why it’s appealing to management. Saving that money also helps keep the Jazz a viable entity in small-market Utah, which we want. Don’t want to bankrupt the Millers and force a sell to Seattle because we all wanted a 20% better player for $18m more.
Now when I first heard this I was concerned. We have AK whose an amazing all around player who has stated he’d like to stay here and would take less money next year. Then we decide to trade him for Diaw?! At first that’s crazy cause Diaw is nowhere near AK’s full range attributes. If we wait till the end of the season and AK falls off the books and we resign him for less. We then fall under the salary and can pick and choose who else to sign. But settling for Diaw and some other chumps seems unfair.
But then I heard the scramblings of people saying possibly Quinton and Afflalo coming as well. Well Quinton is basically just trash NJ is trying to take out. But Afflalo I do like. Diaw and Afflalo are pretty solid nosed players. So if we get Diaw and Afflalo then I wouldn’t be as upset. But I’d rather see AK stay through out this season. Although it does pretty much kill Denver from the northwest. AK is no Carmello.
Denver is not gonna change Melo and Afflalo (or JR smith) for Kirilenko and Favors…and Quinton is just a rumor no?i read in ESPN the only player who goes to de Jazz is Diaw…
I hate this. Carmello is going east regardless of what the Jazz do. One way or another he is gone. So that isnt a motivation for us to do this. Also it is really stupid to make another team in our conference any better.
Diaw is not being underappreciated he really is mediocre at best.
To Van Muhle; I have said and will continue to say AK is the deciding factor for the fate of this team this year. I believe he will have a break out year, and this is the first season I have said it. I didnt feel that way the last four seasons. Dont assume you know so much about other’s thoughts. Stick your foot in your mouth and keep it shut.
And my final thought, case anyone cares. If AK leaves, Masha wont be on tv anymore. That also makes me sad, with the mute button pressed she is awefully easy on the eyes.
A lot of you need to stay off these stupid websites that are saying stuff that makes this trade look like its going to happen, ie that dumb trade rumor site. Do you honestly think if the Jazz were going to pull the trigger on a trade like this, for one, Greg Miller would be indicating something like he did right before the Jazz acquired Al Jefferson??
Since Greg has been in charge, he has been very open with the community when the Jazz are about to do something big and trading AK would fall within that category. No where has there been indications that Denver is going to include JR Smith or Aaron Affalo in this pending trade. Greg Miller is looking for ways to improve the team not downgrade and right now trading AK and bringing in Boris Diaw would not even come close to falling into that category. It would hurt the team, not improve it, regardless of his numbers, Jazz are looking to get BIG and well last I checked, Diaw does not fit in that category. Many people need to think on a managerial aspect of a trade not just jump the gun. The people of NJ of course are going to say its a done deal cause look who they are getting…..
@Michael.
This “rumor” is very true and very real. Greg Miller indicated AFTER we brought in Al Jefferson.
Greg miller wouldn’t say “Guess what everyone, We might be trading AK!!”
This is a very real thing and I for one hope it falls through.
I don’t know which site to believe.
One site says we Just get Diaw. One site says we get Diaw and Ross. One site said Diaw/Ross and J.r Smith. One says Diaw,Ross,Affalo and Smith.
Who knows.
I wish people wouldn’t leak rumors to the papers. But in this case I am kinda glad. it gave me a chance to chew out Greg Miller via twitter.
This trade with AK appears to be dead. ESPN is reporting Denver is now in talks with Philadelphia for a Iguodala/Melo trade. Melo has already approved going here as well.
I will literally quit being a Jazz fan if JR Smith somehow ends up on our team. I feel actually sick watching him play. He’s selfish, he’s a cancer, he has a history of violence against women and a history of attacking teammates during practice sessions! He also LOOKS like some strange half-breed of a Dinosaur and a stone head. The guy is freaking creepy.
