FIRE CORBIN!!!

Posted by: Brandon Allen on February 5th, 2013

The author's views are entirely his or her own and may not reflect the views of the Utah Jazz.

here we go, ALL you little Corbin supporters get on here and tear into me and try to come up with all of the reasons he is a good coach,,NOT and anyone with even half an understanding of this game can see the man CAN”T coach, and Larry would NOT stand for any of this crap. He would have stood with Jerry until the end, Everyone will spin some yarn about why Jerry left and WE (the people who really know) KNOW, that D-wills,,pouty, entitled, disrespectful ass pushed him out and Greg and O’connor didn’t back Jerry. So a future hall of famer and one of the best coaches of all time, stepped down for a little cocky PUNK. As true jazz fans we should all boycott going to games until Corbin is gone. I watch the game with many family and friends and they ALL agree to get rid of his ass but it wont happen,,FOOLS,, ALL,,FOOLS

I agree that Corbin sucks, but let’s not take it too far and make a**es of ourselves.

Yes, Corbin is a sucky sucky coach that needs to be let go. He does not know how to make playcalls or run a team. That being said, I am not a Laker fan, and therefore I do not “boycott” support of my team. The Jazz still have my support, even if it means I am more vocal about my displeasure. That doesn’t mean I will forsake them until I pout and get my way. It is what it is, and even though I don’t completely agree with them, I know they are smarter than I when it comes to basketball.

I want Raja Bell gone too, but they don’t seem to concerned about that either.

  2. KCJones says:

Second the motion. Who we hiring tho?

  3. Dan says:

I am in no way a supporter of Corbin. But I do not think he needs to be fired… Yet. He loves Utah and the jazz. He is still a very new head coach. He has to improve just like the players. He see’s the players play basketball almost everyday and puts out on the floor who he thinks will give us the best chance at winning. But if he doesn’t figure out that burks, favors and kanter each deserve 20-30 minutes per game by the end of the season, something has to be done.

  4. Steven says:

I still want the team to win. I don’t agree with the lineups. I don’t agree with minute distributions. But I still want to support the players. I’m frustrated at the use of timeouts. I see other coaches around the league making better use of them when the Jazz players impose themselves into a game.

Personally I support two way signage at the games. Support the players efforts to win during the game, make yourself loud and clear. Help the players win, help the players progress their game. After the match raise the sign that shows that you a think a coaching change needs to be considered my the Millers. I see Greg sitting court side there just about every match day. If there are enough reasons highlighted and he sees those same fans being vocal in support of the team how could he not take it seriously? Make a list of reasons that Corbin isn’t it.
Then when the Jazz finally do lose their patience with progress pray that the team make the right appointment.

  5. Brandon, I tend to fall into the camp of Kevin and Dan. I’m not in favor of boycotting our team. We are a small market team and fortunate that the Millers have kept us here. While I tend to be more patient, I believe, I do think that it is good that you voice your dissent. I’m waiting to see what happens with trade and this summer.

  6. Everyone one that knows basketballs the most important part of it is winning and what has corbin done lately he has won sorry brandon he isnt.going anywhere anytime soon
I agree he isn’t the best coach like i have said before but besides bringing jerry back or giving phil a call who could you get to replace corbin and win games like he has of recent? Its not that we have incredible talent either are sixth man is out are starting pg are back up pgs are nothing to speak of as well. Corbin still has them going out and playing and winning. Is he the best coach no os he the worst and deserve all the fans criticism like this hell no.

  7. Scott Skyles,,Stan VanGundy, Dell Harris, (don’t count him out, p.j. is making a comeback, hell I would take Paul Westphal or Avery Johnson over him, or why not Hornacek,,I don’t think bringin Jerry back would be a hard sell,,hes at all the damn games,,think hes tryin to send off a signal,,why not atleast try,,hell hes 3 times the coach as Corbin, I can go ,,on and on,,wont do no good, Miller is an idiot,,wish Larry was still callin the shots.

  8. The whole excuse “he is new” is getting old! He has plenty of time to prove hisself. He just has failed Badly!

  9. Larry would have kept corbin around he was big on the jazz family which corbin was part of and in January they had the forth best coach in the league for the month thats saying something buddy. Plus bring in a new.coach new coach means new system which means alot more losses most likely out of the playoffs and you would be posting about how much you hate them so what would it change nothing. If you cant be happy with a10 plus wins in a month your not goin to be happy with anyone. Corbin haters are just trying to find something to complain about i don’t know why you guys do it but, we have had a ton of injuries and to still come out with.13 wins in a month is saying alot about the coach. So stop your complaining and enjoy the good play and good coaching we have had the opportunity of seeing as of late

  10. John Denver says:

Firing a coach costs money. Are you willing to pay the money it would take to pay off the coaching contract? Firing a coach isn’t the Jazz’s style unless something goes horribly wrong, which it has not. In your post you didn’t site any reasons that Coach Corbin should be fired. All you said is “ALL you little Corbin supporters get on here and tear into me and try to come up with all of the reasons he is a good coach,,NOT and anyone with even half an understanding of this game can see the man CAN”T coach.” Here’s your chance Brandon, give me some reason’s you don’t feel like he is a good coach.

  11. Im with john on this everyone that says corbin should be that’s all they say they have no legitament fact to back up what they are saying. All i have heard people knock on is his substitution scheme heck i was one person that was but, ye is winning games subbing players in like he is so you cant really use that for a bad thing since he is winning games doing that so i have no complaints about the man

  12. Andy says:

Look at it this way, 3 out of our top 4 guards (depth position wise) were out this game. We just won a game relying on a 3rd string pg as well as the 3rd string sg moved out of position. Sure it was the Kings, but look at any other team in the league and ask me if they can win a game going that deep in the depth chart. Maybe Spurs and Clippers could do it, other than that I don’t see any other team winning. Corbin’s progress is coming along fine, get over yourself.

  13. John says:

Most teams put their best players in the starting line ups, the jazz however don’t play this way and need injuries just so best players can play.

  14. Omar says:

I think pointing to injuries is exactly our point.
Remember last season: Bell, Howard, CJ, Watson (and Watson again this season!).

Out of 24 games against teams with winning records, Jazz have 7 wins out of 24 games played. That is a 29.1 winning percentage! That pretty bad.

Out of 17 games against teams from the West with winning records, Jazz have 4 wins out of 17 games played. That is 23.5 winning percentage against West team with winning records. That is worse.

Out of 12 ROAD games played against teams with winning records, Jazz have ONE (@Nets)win out of 12. That is an 8.3 winning percentage on the ROAD against teams with winning records. That’s just trash.

Out of 8 ROAD games played against West teams with winning records, Jazz have won ZERO!!! Out of 8. That is a ZERO winning percentage on the ROAD against West teams with winning records. That is doubly trash!

#FIRECORBIN (and the stats to prove it)

  15. Omar says:

    Jazz are 27-22 thus far.

  16. John Denver says:

As much as I disagree and think we are being to difficult on Ty, at least you’re bringing reasons in. Brandon blasted Ty up there and gave no reasons. That’s what I was getting at. If you’re gonna blast someone like this post, you gotta back it up.

  17. Omar says:

    @John Denver

I want a championship coach. Jazz have a ton of talent on the roster! But so long as Corbin is coach, we won’t get the maximum out of our talent. And I feel we are on a ticking clock. The more we get iso-heavy Al, Watson getting close to 30 minutes per game, that talent goes to waste.

I know, I for one, always lamented that the Jazz were always top heavy with 2 or 3 All-Star to Hall of Fame type players but the rest of the roster was weak (and a lot had to do with drafting outside the lottery every year). Well this team is loaded with talent! Id even say, top to bottom, this roster is better than the 07 Jazz team that went to West finals! But instead we have to watch Al iso heavy trash (last night Al had 7 shot attempts by the 8:14 mark of first quarter!!!) That’s why Jazz starts slow every game. Its just the Al show, and that how Jazz fall behind by 8 early. And it happens every game.

In the playoffs, in road games, you need to look towards your coach, and Corbin just doesn’t have it. That’s why we struggle against good team. Against bad team, we just have too much talent. In the playoffs there won’t be the TWolves, Cavs, Pistons, Kings, etc. it the best. I have no confidence in Corbin, in that kinda intense situation. Just look at how the last @Portland game went. That felt like a playoff game.

  18. John Denver says:

    @Omar
I guess that’s where I disagree is the roster strength. While top to bottom this roster may have more talent than the roster in 07, this roster does not have the high level talent that roster had with D-Will, Boozer, Okur all playing the best basketball of their careers. It also did help to have a coach like Jerry Sloan. Ty isn’t Jerry, but there aren’t very many better alternatives I feel out there. We do have a much deeper roster but only 5 guys are on the court at a time and if at any given moment another team has 5 more talented, better guys on the court does it matter if your 10th guy can beat theirs? I genuinely feel like Ty has made our rosters overachieve these past two years. It does bug me how much he is a veteran’s guy. But so was Sloan. He had D-Will coming off the bench for half a season and he was one of the most talented players we’ve ever had and the person in front of him was not nearly as good as Al or Milsap.

  19. I agree with Omar on the point of Ty not being a big game coach. It seems like he gets out coached by most coaches in the league. I would like to see how things shake up in the offseason and see what he does next year. If its the same old thing, than Im all for moving on without him.

  20. We need championship caliber players on the team as well and we dont have that at all. Coach is great but if you dont have the talent you dont have the talent and, the jazz dont have that star player to tale them there. I dont hate corbin he is winning games doing what he can and its working now but im up set at the front office they are aggressive at all going for players it so stupid you dont get better by sitting around twirling your fingers around. The whole burks playing better thats an invalid point because he is inconsistent he wont go out the next and do that thats why he is buried on the bench. Winning games like he is i dont see how you can say he is being out coached winning as many games as he is recently. Players step up and play but you cant give them all the credit. that goes to great coaching as well. Basketball is a game judged by wins and looses and coach is winning so you have to judge him according to that plain and simple

  21. I Agree. Ty isn’t a good coach. I’m from Hungary and support the team since Stockton Malone era. As I see the “market” of coaches in NBA is pretty small. Almost the only coach I relly respect is Gregg Popovich. He knows what he do! Can make a winnig team the from an almost single talented squad. Knowledge of tactic is a rare thing amongst NBA coaches. Because the league is full with real talents and there are no such a need to be wise and tactical. Spoelstra, Mike Brown, D’Antoni sucks. It would be a very wise thing to hire a coach from Europa. I don’t want to be disrespectful I love the game the NBA. I think there are two type of teams. One with great players and one with talented role players. A team such as the Jazz really needs a coach who can create a game style that fits and use mostly the strongest areas of the players. Like Popovich does

  22. Kevin says:

Jerry Sloan was able to make winners out of team that’s best players were Matt Harpring, AK-47, and Carlos Arroyo. I guarantee if Jerry had this roster back in 03-04, he would have had them in the top 5 in the west. Obviously that’s just my speculation, but you can’t say that this roster can’t win a lot of games and do very well. You just have to have a coach that knows how to utilize the talent and get the most out of their players.

  23. Steven says:

Miklos makes a good point. Corbin’s role as a coach is to get the most out of the squad available. This is a squad of players that is good enough to be a 500+ team on its own. With the franchise mentality of winning. Corbin’s job is to give them the tools to pull out a few more victories with timely interventions when other teams are going on a run.

I don’t expect Corbin to be a world beater, but after over 2 seasons in charge I expect him to make the most of his roster. Over those 2 years he is working with an improved squad. He still has no player that he could consider as a franchise type player. He’s not blessed with a Harden like Houston, or Chris Paul like the Clippers. However he does have a better than average squad. He has some talented young players and a few decent veterans to back them up. The front office have moved players such as Franciso Elson, Fesenko and Ronnie Price on because they just simply weren’t giving Corbin enough depth. Inconsistent players such as CJ Miles, Josh Howard and Devin Harris who just seemed to struggle in the Jazz system were also replaced with players that are giving the Jazz an extra threat. No one can argue that Kanter is a better option than Fesenko. Or that Foye gives us a genuine threat at the 3 point line rather than a jump shot by CJ that seemed to hurt the Jazz more than it helped. Carroll gives us more defensive hustle and more offense that we got out of Elson. As much as we like to complain about Tinsley’s lack of scoring threat and not being good enough to be a backup PG for the Jazz, his unit of players would far outscore that of Price’s who had a scoring ability himself but couldn’t seem to get his teammates to score. So with all that in mind in the time Corbin has been in the job, there has been improvements in the personnel. We would all like the squad to be better still, as would every coach in the league.

It’s true the team has won a lot of games lately. However most of those games have been against losing teams. I am a great believer in that you can only beat the teams in front of you. However some of those W’s that have tallied up have hidden some dire problems. This is a team that for 3 years has struggled to win the first quarter for 3 seasons now. Yes half a season of that time was under Jerry Sloan’s charge and cannot be put squarely on Corbin. However before he stepped up into the Head Coach’s Office he must have been well aware of that being a failure of the team, and yet despite a number of departures and additions within the squad Corbin hasn’t really addressed the first quarter issues. It’s hard to win games against good opposition if you fall behind early. Inevitably when the team fights to get back into the game against good opposition, its going to find that same team will pick up the pace and go on another run. That addresses another issue that I think Corbin has failed in. He doesn’t protect his team early enough. He will allow teams to go on a 9 – 0 or 11 – 2 run before calling a time out. When I watch the Pacers, Dallas, San Antonio or Houston allow a team go on a 5-0 run The coach is calling a timeout to stop the momentum. In the case of Poppovich he berates his players for what they are not doing as a team and as individuals. Other coaches just use the opportunity to give the players a breather and a gentle reminder of what they need to do or how to adjust to what is happening on the floor. By the time Corbin reacts, and this is being going on for 2 and half season now, the damage is greater and its harder to get back into the match. This is still going on today. The difference lately is the Jazz were able to build up some leads against poor teams and hold on for the victory. But some games that should have been easy victories turned out to be very close games where the results could have been very different. Against better teams the Jazz have been punished for some tactical failings – think Denver, Golden State and Houston. All those teams that should be about the same level as the Jazz and yet they have given the Jazz some real drubbings this year because they have went on runs that Corbin failed to control.

Communication is an important skill that the Head Coach has. Sometimes people think age and trophies in the cabinet room will get a coach respect from players. But really its communication. There is no doubt that Gregg Poppovich get’s a lot out of Duncan, Parker and Ginobili but he also gets a lot of his squad players too. But a young relatively new coach can get the same sort of devotion from his squad too if he has the power of persuasion. There is no doubt that OKC has some talented players. However they also have a young coach. Yet that coach was able to convince someone as talented as James Harden to come off the bench and be the sixth man that made an impact, while other talented players such as Durant, Westbrook and Ibaka were starting. It was only when he wasn’t going to get a max contract that Harden moved on. Up until then Harden gave his all for the club and was a key player in their success.

Corbin doesn’t get that same respect from his players. Last season Raja Bell had a problem with his minutes and this season as a result is being paid over $3m to play golf somewhere in Florida. I’ll grant you that Corbin does have a difficult job in juggling minutes for some talented young players who need to develop and 8 players (sorry 7, forget Raja) who are on expiring contracts. That said basketball is about winning, its not about who gets what minutes, or how much they earn. If there was less of a culture of individual stats and minutes and more about just doing what it takes to win the game then players wouldn’t have room to argue if Corbin was matching up the opposition with players that win games.

We as fans know the where Al Jefferson excels and we also know the weak points within his game. Al himself knows. His teammates know. Coaches and players around the league know. Some teams can’t handle Al and they get punished. Other teams though know to how to limit his damage and inflict more damage on the Jazz. Yet Corbin continues to play him from the start no matter who the opposition is, and gives him the minutes no matter who the opposition is and how he is playing offensively or defensively. Other coaches though would use him from the start against opposition that he matches up well against and limit him against other teams who would use Jefferson’s weaker game elements to inflict damage on the Jazz.

I’m not a coach myself so I’m not going to say that Corbin is giving the wrong number of minutes to the young players in the squad. Let’s just say for arguments sake that Corbin is giving Favors and Kanter the right number of minutes despite them both being number 3 picks in the draft and would probably get more minutes at other teams. Teams that generally pick 3 picks aren’t winning teams. My argument with Corbin isn’t the number of minutes they get but how those minutes are distributed. In two years, Kanter the number 3 pick, has only started 1 game. I’m not sure how many Favors has started. Not too many. All those games were games that Jefferson was unable to play. How are those players going to be ready to step up if Jefferson and/or Millsap are not resigned in the summer when up until now they have had only limited minutes, most of which have been played against second units? Against the likes of a well organized San Antonio or team with Big players such as the Lakers Jefferson struggles to get going. Those are types of games that Favors and Kanter need to grow in to see if the are able to step up. They could still get their limited minutes if that is all they deserve but limited minutes against better opposition would be invaluable to their learning curve. That in my mind is another failing of Corbin. I don’t think he has Favors and Kanter suitably ready to step up against starting caliber players if Jefferson and Millsap are not resigned. There is a good chance that Jefferson at $15m is just not affordable. Favors and Kanter should be good enough to play against most Big guys in the league, but how many minutes can they play against those players at a high standard? Nobody knows.

  24. Steven says:

To sum it up, its all about progress and evolution. We aren’t expecting a world beating team with this squad but we do expect to see progress and evolution in Corbin’s lineups and decision making.

  25. Jamezz says:

That’s all well said Steven, at least you laid out a whole bunch of arguments on where coach Corbin fails and needs to improve, rather than bashing him for no reason, or just writing ‘Fire Corbin’ like I’ve seen before.

I think it’s way too early to call for something like that. This is a tough roster to handle. You want a combination of a winning culture and young players development. Now you tell me what’s worth most, making the playoffs or not? I do agree that Jefferson could be used more wisely and I really like the idea of not starting him every game. Like against Houston Harden wouldn’t have had it so easy against Favors I’m sure of that. And maybe they wouldn’t have gained the momentum they did.

I want to bring up some positive thinking and say that I am excited with this team, it’s a unit where the players all seem to get along well and every single one brings something different and unique. Shame on all those bummers who call for boycotting the team. Go route for some other team if you call for such actions, we don’t need you here. Everything can be improved on, even your childish behaviour.

  26. Omar says:

If the Jazz are NOT going to fire Corbin, then the FO needs to continue to step up, just like letting go of CJ, Howard, and Bell, they need to continue that and dump Al and Watson, and move Tinsley to the 3rd PG. Plain and simple. The less options Corbin has to make bad decisions on, the better the Jazz will become.

    Trade deadline super important!
