Free agent/Trade

UNRESTRICTED
DeMarre Carroll
Randy Foye
Al Jefferson
Paul Millsap
Jamaal Tinsley
Earl Watson
Marvin Williams (ETO)
Mo Williams

Are all free agents at the end of the year Marvin has the ETO.  So the big question is do we try to make a trade before the 21st or do we wait and try to resign and work with free agent and every one knows how hard it is to get a top free agent to Utah. Its a hard decision, Do we stay with what we have the rest of the season knowing that well finish with the 6th to the 8th seed lose in the first round get the 20th pick and G.S. pick witch will more than likely be right around the same spot as ares 18 to 22. Or do we make a trade try to get a young point guard and will have to take bad contract back like Stephen Jackson and give Favors 30+ Kanter 25+ Hayword 30+ and Burks 30+minutes a game and not make the playoffs get the 12 to the 14th pick were there maybe a P.G. we can run with the core 4. I say make the trade blow it up let the core 4 get the minutes and lets see what they can do.

  1. I’m on board with you, Andy. In one more year we’ll need that money to resign two of the core4. If we can get a decent PG in the draft and maybe another SG, we’ll just need a backup big.

Josh Smith will be traded, would Atlanta go for a trade with Millsap and Mo Williams for Jeff Teague and Josh Smith? Smith is on an expiring contract would we be able to resign him? questionable. Eric Gordon is also available would NO take Jefferson for Gordon?

    Teague/Foye
    Gordon/Burks
    Carroll/Hayward
    Smith/Williams
    Favors/Kanter

  3. I would like to build around Foye, Burks, Hayward, Millsap, Favors, Kanter, Carroll, Evans and the best starting and backup PG we can get
(as long as it’s ok with Omar)

  4. Andy says:

Ric Bucher just said that consensus around the league is that the Jazz are leaning towards keeping Al over Millsap. We have heard rumors stating the exact opposite throughout the season so I don’t put too much stock in it.

  5. Omar says:

    haha, Kory…

about 40% of my problem is Al; 40% Corbin; 17% Watson; 3% Tinlsey.

If Jazz fired Corbin, and hired a coach that would bench Al (max 20 minutes), and DNP Watson and Tinsley—Id have nothing to complain about.

Or if Jazz traded away, Al, Watson, DNPed Tinsley, Corbin would have less ways of screwing up—so Id be pretty happy.

Id add Murphy to that list. I think hes going to be a quality rotation player that has nights where he goes off everyone once in a while.

  6. I think we would be really stupid not to resign Carroll. He is SO much better than Marvin Williams–at least in this system. Williams might actually be a better player, but he cannot succeed in Tyrone Corbin’s “system”.

In fact, with career lows across the board for Marvin, I wouldn’t be surprised if he decides not to exercise his option. I could see him averaginbg 15 points, 5 rebounds and some assists and blocks if he was on a team that utilized him as an offensive player (which the Jazz do not). I REALLY hope Marvin does not come back next year.

Between Hayward and Carroll, we have an awesome, athletic, young, defensive oriented small forward duo. Really important to be able to slow down guys like Durant, Lebron, Batum, Gay, and even Harden.

In my opinion, only guys worth resigning are:
    Demarre Carroll
    Randy Foye
    Mo Williams

Mo should be our BACKUP point guard. Remember, this guy misses an average of 1/3rd of every season over his career.

A lot of people struggle when Al is a key part of the system. If only one player was traded at the trade deadline I’d like to see it be Al. That would give us time to see whether Marvin can become more involved in the offense between now and the end of the season. It would also allow Hayward to be part of the starting 5 where his performances belong and give us a chance to assess Kanter and Favors to see whether they need help next season, or whether we can turn it over to them and have a cheap rookie backup incase one them gets injured. Personally I think Carroll needs to stay, and for at least the type of contract that Jeremy is on. Jeremy though I think needs to be moved on as part of some fodder to make a trade work. He just isn’t going to get the minutes here to justify his contract That money would be better going to keep Carroll or Foye here who are comparatively infinitely much more useful parts to have on the roster.

At the very least this team needs to move Al, Tinsley, Watson and Evans on to pastures new. Thats what $22million in contracts saved? We need to look to get a new PG, maybe keep Mo on at a slightly reduced contract to reflect his time on the floor, continue to play Burks mostly at SG but have him as a 3rd backup PG option. If Marvin can step up when Al isn’t here then he might be worth keeping around. If not that could be another $8m better spent elsewhere. If Mo can be resigned for $1-2m less he can either be the main PG guard when healthy or decent backup PG if the Jazz can make a deal for someone better (which I’m starting to doubt for a year or two yet). Foye and Carroll were acquired on the cheap and with they performances probably deserve a decent pay rise. $20m or so should get a decent player or a couple of good players that can kick this team on.

Noneyadb – Smith would not resign he is looking for a max deal… not worth it… And Carroll infront of Hayward is backwards yes carroll is fun to watch but he is not a starter for the team he brings instant energy off the bench

  9. @Steven, I agree with you, but I also think part of the problem is Corbin. I don’t think he knows how to utilize any player except Jefferson.

  10. noneyadb says:

Hayward would balance out the scoring on the second unit, 6th man role… Smith is icing on the cake, who cares if he resigns. Gordon and Teague are the main reasons for the trades. Yes Gordon is often injured but you have enough depth with burkes hayward and foye to cover if he is out
