Meet
Corbin WTF?!?

The author's views are entirely his or her own and may not reflect the views of the Utah Jazz. Now like most of you in here I anticipate that this season is not going to be pretty. I expect there not to be a lot of continuity on offense, the appropriate defensive rotations will also take time to come around. But what I didn’t expect and really hope to change is that Corbin looks more lost with this team than ANY player on the Jazz roster. I understand that he may not know what rotations he’s going to use, but the line ups that he used last night were flat out wrong. As a coach, no matter how bad your team is, on a professional level there are things that you need to do and understand and it was very obviously that Corbin hasn’t been getting it. I’m not just talking about the game last night. This has carried over from last season to now. Our offense CANNOT be just pass it to Jefferson on the low block and cut off of him, we CANNOT start Raja and give him extended runs in the game when he’s being worthless. Being a new team all around we MUST get up and down the floor. To play a slow grind it out game exposes us. We are young, athletic and not experienced, these young men have to get out and run. And for gods sake Corbin come up with some decent offensive plays. If you have a young team that doesn’t have a lot of continuity or power put in a standard motion offense until these guys and YOU get it figured out. Devin Harris has no clue what to do in our half court sets (the few that we have) and he’s supposed to be the leader of our team. I watched an interview of Harris about a month ago in which he had mentioned that he was never given a play book to study over the off-season. There are far to many things that Corbin is doing right now that are giving me serious concerns about his coaching ability and I’m not referring to just the game last night. I truly hope that we see Corbin make tremendous improvement tonight because his coaching up to date has been inexcusable.

Im not buying Corbin as a head coach. At all. Dont get me wrong i love the guy, hes a great assistant, but i dont think hes ready to replace a legend, and have a head coaching job yet. I think we shoulda tried to sign Adelman or whats his face, Mark Jackson? idk but i dont like Corbin as a head coach…
yet…
I’m going to have to agree.
Our starters last night (Al, Derrick, Gordon, Raja, Devin) had a COMBINED 30 points. Gordon and D-Fave (the rookies) had 15 of those. On average, that is 1.5 points per starter each quarter.
We didn’t run. We didn’t set any picks. We didn’t drive to the paint in order to break open the defense (CJ and Howard both drove to take contested jumpers in the paint, though). Most of our plays looked like this:
Play #1:
Guy holding the ball above his head on the wing. 3 of the other guys stand there, defended. One guy makes a cut across, doesn’t get open. Wing player jacks up a contested jumper.
Play #2:
Pass the ball to Al on the block. Rest of the team watches him. He tries an up-and-under or a floater hook. Maybe there’s an offensive rebound, which gets tentatively put back up into the defender’s hands or boings off the bottom of the rim.
That’s about the only 2 plays I saw all night.
I agree with you. A simple motion offense (http://www.coachesclipboard.net/Animations/FlashMotionOffense.html) would have been at least something. You need certain players for the flex offense, and I’m not sure D Harris and Al Jefferson fit it very well.
the Jazz are ALWAYS content with jacking up any jumpers. Big Al is decent, but uses the same move every time. Work the High-Low game and we’ll be good, well at least better, and the motion offense KC, is a yes. I agree, we might have been able to actually do something! not that thats really saying much. There needs to be more off ball movement, screening, v cuts, cutting, slashing, sprinting through cuts, not jogging etc…
I’m having my doubts too, but we should give Corbin a little more time before we start making judgements. That said, I couldn’t agree more with most of what you said. I’m not sure Corbin even has any plan on offense or with his rotations. And I bet Watson and even Tinsley and Burks could do a better job leading and playing than Harris. Did we run a single play last night?? Why are we playing to our weaknesses instead of our strengths?
I’d give Corbin this season to pull it together. No more unless there is substantial improvement from last night. and no we didnt run a play, and i cant even answer your second question Zach. lol..
Yep! Players can’t do much when the coach is sitting on the bench with a blank stare on his face. I saw one fast break last night with Hayward and can’t recall a “good” offensive possession where the team executed it properly.
Play Evans more than 5 minutes a game!
Play Bell less than 5 minutes a game!
Run Run Run Run! This team has athletes finally and I don’t want to watch Jefferson sit on the block for 10 seconds pump faking 3 times then making a half-a** attempt at a dunk.
Hey Corbin! Get out and run and let them play! The jazz looked like they belong in the 50 and older rec league last night.
The front office needs to make a change, FAST. With the current team and coaching staff I wouldn’t be surprised if we ended 9-57. Corbin is completely lost out there and we have truly horrible players getting playing time.
At this rate, Chicago is going to figure out that Rip Hamilton is no longer an NBA player before we figure out the same about Raja Bell, and that team went all in on sucky Hamilton…
Thanks for the example of the motion offense KC. It’s a very simple and natural offense that literally takes little or no time to learn. Corbin will learn some things with time but what he is missing is stuff, to me that he should no already. I’m no coach, but I was an All-State ball player in H.S. and am far from knowing everything but to me it seems like Corbin needs a little basketball 101. With that being said let’s trade our 10.8 mill trade exception, Harris, Jefferson and the 2nd round pick from NJ for a true pass first point. RONDO!!! Go get it Jazz!!!
haha Chase! lets do get Rondo, i dont care what or who we trade, not Millsap or Favors, as long as he would sign with us again.
I’m willing to be traded. Send me to Boston, I’ll live in a shack if I have to just to get Rondo on the Jazz.
ha ya! same here bro! maybe theyll take Boler and Harpring lol…. and Alema..
I’m also not totally sold on Corbin, but I do think it’s too early to jump ship. We gotta keep a proper perspective on this season. The coaching staff has only had 3 weeks with the players. There was no summer league, no training camp, no preseason. I think if it still looks like we are lost by the time February comes around, then we can start calling for some blood, but for now I’m willing to be patient and see what Ty can do.
Yes we do need to be patient with some things. That’s one thing that we agree on. But by now we should at least know what offense we are going to “try” and run. We should have an idea of whom we are going to play and not be completely CLUELESS as to what our rotations will be. CLUELESS!
One friggin’ game and people are bailing…incredible. Leave it to “Jazz fans” to be so fair weather. Last night was frustrating, I wont disagree. But this team has had next to no time to prep for this season. The reason Harris didn’t get a play book to study during the off season is because the coaching staff could have ZERO contact with the players during the lock out. Give this team and the staff more than ONE regular season game and an EXTREMELY shortened training camp before calling for any of their heads. Patience with this team doesn’t mean being patient with them from quarter to quarter or even game to game. It’ll take weeks, maybe months, before they come together. CHILL OUT!
Read the entire post A.G. This is not in reference to last nights game. READ IT ALL BEFORE YOU MAKE IGNORANT COMMENTS. Also, nobody is bailing, they like myself are stating there displeasure and opinion with our coaching.
Also, you could probably imagine that on a professional level the coaching staff would give a playbook to the players BEFORE the lock out ya dip sh*t.
I am of the opinion that Corbin has the potential to be a fantastic coach. It is WAY too early to make any kind of objective conclusion about him as a coach.
Keep in mind that this is essentially Corbin’s first season as head coach of the Jazz. Oh, and the only players we have left that played the entire season last year are Millsap, Jefferson, Miles, Bell, Watson, Hayward and Evans. Devin Harris and Derrick Favors are still new additions (Favors can almost be considered a rookie).
So that’s 7 players with a full Jazz season under their belt–only half of the team. I know its frustrating as hell, but we’ve got to be patient. And it is a HUGE mistake to lay the blame on Corbin.
The front office made a terrible mistake (their worst since letting Matthews go) last year by re-signing Raja Bell. I love Raja as a person, but let’s be honest, he’s kind of a crappy basketball player. He has become a MAJOR liability.
And he is supposed to be a leader of sorts. But he has been very vocal with his anger at not being a starter on our team, even though he simply does not produce anything.
Corbin deserves our respect for dealing with the situation he was thrown into last season with class and leadership. I mean can you imagine a worse way/time to become a head coach?
PLUS the lockout took away the pre-season and the majority of training camp. A lot of the mistakes being made now would have been resolved in camp and the pre-season.
Let’s be patient, as much as it hurts. And also let’s be honest, the REAL reason we lost last night was the bought-and-paid-for Lakers officiating:
Almost 40 free throws for the Lakers, and only 17 for the Jazz. At the end of the 3rd quarter, the Lakers had taken 30 (!!!) free throws and the Jazz had taken 7 (!!!). Thats 3 free throw attempts for every 1 Jazz attempt! Talk about a discrepancy.
Wow, classy guy aren’t ya Chase. If you can’t handle someone disagreeing with your opinion without calling them “ignorant” or a “dip sh*t” maybe you shouldn’t post. All I was saying was this team needs the fans to be patient for more than one game. It’s a little ridiculous to jump all over the coaching staff after 2 weeks off training camp, a couple of preseason games, and one regular season game. As far as people bailing already, well, a post like this kind of implies you’ve already bailed on the coaching staff. Just look at your title.
A.G. with a right hook.
(Audible cheers and applause)
Looser coach // looser team
@Guido The correct spelling is LOSER, douchebag.
Maybe Guido really meant looser, browncoat. Maybe he doesn’t speak English well. Now who’s the douche bag browncoat? Think before you speak bro.
Perhaps he did, if so i apologize. I suppose i made the assumption because this appears to be a coach bashing post. Trying to fight off all the trolling and may have fell into the trap and become one!
its all good browncoat. i see where youre coming from, and actually i agree with Guido if he meant loser coach=loser team ha.
Give Corbin a at least until the end of NEXT season before we judge his ability. After taking over last year and with the lockout this year, any first year head coach is gonna be a little lost. I coach high school basketball, and while I am in no way comparing that to the NBA, I can admit that once I began coaching I realized there is so much more that goes into it, and everyone else only sees what a coach does wrong. Give him some time.
One thing I will say though is Bell needs to not start, and not play so many minutes.
Ill admit I was having the same thoughts. How long do we have to wonder about Corbin before making a move? Maybe what the team really needs is something else rather than something brand new. Last year Karl Malone was hinting for a coaching job. I say we give him one. His basketball IQ is plenty proven and he can teach toughness.
