Big Line-up quick enough?

Posted by: Christon Rigby on April 30th, 2012

The author's views are entirely his or her own and may not reflect the views of the Utah Jazz.

The Spurs always have a shooter spotting up at the baseline for three..and they are always thinking about the extra pass when they play the P&R. So my question is, is the big line-up quick enough to rotate on the outside shooter? This is a question not an opinion.. ;) So Jazznation, what are your thoughts?

Go Jazz!!!

I’ll take the chance and put my best player (Favors) on the floor for 36 minutes. It’s not like the other smaller lineups closed out on every three either. In the playoffs you’re supposed to shorten your rotations to the 7-9 best players. Hell, I’d put Evans in at three before Bell, Howard or CJ. Tinsley backup PG, Burks backup Hayward, Kanter/Evans backup the three bigs.

But with the way Corbin values experience over talent and skill, we’ll probably see Howard and Raja starting game 2.

I’m with KC – you play your best players, period! Josh Howard isn’t one of them. Evans should be in the rotation before him.

The Jazz get beat on the pick n roll because they have Jefferson on Duncan, which leads to guys having to help and to sum it up – wide open 3’s. Try putting Favors on Duncan, since he can guard the pick n roll better. Heck, even throw Carroll on Parker a couple of times to see if his size and lateral quickness slows him down

    Our best lineup/starters should be:
    Harris
    Hayward
    Millsap
    Favors
    Jefferson

The Spurs are a good team but we didn’t take anything away. Go big and take the paint away, let the Spurs live an die by the three.

  4. @browncoat agreed! We just sat and watched them do what ever they wanted.

Also do not expect Al to improve offensively against Duncan he has always struggled against him. It is not going to change now since his defensive effort does not change even though it is the playoffs…

  5. Browncoat says:

All i am hearing is how do we matchup versus Tony Parker or Ginobili. What we should be hearing is how can we take something away from them. Crowd the paint and punish everyone that tries to get in there.

(Speaking to Corbin)Quit focusing on matchups because we will never win that battle with Pop.

@Dallan Al doesn’t get to the line which allows anyone that defends him to stay in the game. I’m sure this team will have some pretty big changes after we see what they can do this series.

No matter what lineup we use against the Spurs we are going to struggle to stop them, they are just that good. But our regular lineups will always be outperformed, our best chance is to put the big lineup in and do 2 things:
    1. We create miss-matches for the spurs when we are on offence
    2. If we use Favors on Duncan our bigs should be able to control the paint defensively. Thus forcing the spurs hit the 3 at a high percentage to win.
This is the only strategy that I see that gives us a change to win.

  7. Looks like Corbin is leaning towards starting Howard again in Game 2.

Like Sloan, it’s clear he prefers playing the veterans. I guess that’s just his mentality.

  8. The Big Lineup was +1 against the Spurs in their 3 minutes on the floor together, so it’s a pretty darn small sample size, but the second that Carroll came into the game for Big Al is when the Spurs broke the game open with their outside shooting. I don’t think that the Big Lineup is any less effective against the 3 point shot than the normal lineup, so hopefully Corbin will play them. Before game 1 I said that the only thing that can stop the big lineup is Corbin keeping them from being on the floor together. I knew he wouldn’t start them or play them together very much but for him to only play them 3 minutes is ridiculous. What a bozo.

  9. John: When we put the big lineup in the Spurs stop using the pick and roll and they just feed Duncan in the post one on one and spread the floor. Big Al’s biggest defensive weakness is against the pick and roll, in man to man defense in the post he isn’t bad (this is where he gets all of his blocked shots), so I actually like Big Al on Duncan because quickness wise I don’t think Al can keep up with anybody out on the perimeter. I say let Duncan be the guy to beat us, I don’t think he has the offensive dominance in him anymore to beat us for 35 minutes.

  10. Peter Barney says:

Jazz need to defend on the post up before a Spur player gets to that 3 pt. line. Bring Carroll, Howard, Harris, and Hayward put there hands in their face, or attempt to block. Put some kind of a press on them, pressure their shots?

  11. JRN5150 says:

Good question. I would say no. However, I would much rather give up the corner 3 all day than a floater from 6 feet out. GIVE ME THE BIG LINEUP TY CORBIN!!!!!

  12. disco says:

@ JMC – That is what happens when an assistant gets promoted once his mentor leaves. The same mentality but without the same cattle

  13. F the outside shots. Just own the paint. Play Evans , quickness and length. I want to see Favors, Sap, Evans, Hayward, and Burkes at PG!!! Speed, Length, AND hops. And then we would get Harpring peeing himself with SWAT LAkE CITy all night!! cant wait
