Meet
Favor’s on offense

The author's views are entirely his or her own and may not reflect the views of the Utah Jazz.Weve discussed alot the possible impact that Derrick could have this year with more minutes and touches. Defensively its not even a question how much the team improves on the court defending the paint and highpost. What about his offense? Is there going to be enough improvement or new devolopment in his post game? My thought is that he could have a breakout year offensively as well as defensively. The athleticism is already there on offense. Critics have put a knock on his midrange abilities. I think he has always been able to shoot. Hitting the weights hard and putting on more muscle always leaves some work to make a counter adjustment with a players shooting game. This might have also been a factor and impact on Haywards game when entering the NBA.
If Favors does get more touches and he does have confidence to exploit those touches on offense, will we maintain our offensive force this upcoming season? My feeling is that what has improved is Derrick’s overall confidence that he can compete with anyone in this league. He has alot more confidence at the end of last season that he is a legit talent and force in this league. He’s always had offensive talent to match his Defense. I think this will just come out in the wash and maybe a lower shot % than Al, but a hell of lot more fouls being drawn by taking it to the rim which would be a dramatic increase in team offensive power.

If we run the same offense as last year Favors will average 14 ppg also if he plays along side Al. If he plays along side Millsap and is allowed to do what he does best which is move and cut he will be right around 20. He is PHENOMANAL moving and cutting and P&R. He is over 65% on all those type of shots. Compare that to 29% on Post ups and you have how Corbin was to using him correctly. He could be amazing so hopefully Corbin sees that and does something great with him.
I am going on record right now and stating it will be a HUGE mis step in not only his development but our teams as well if he starts along side Al. I think he should be playing along side Paul.
Playing either Millsap OR Jefferson over Favors will be looked back upon some day like we look back at having played Keith McLeod over Deron Williams or Rickey Green over John Stockton. Really? We played those guys over the superstar?
You are right KC. I think it will be interesting to see what happens if we play Paul and Favors in the starting lineup. If Favors does well which I fully expect everyone will be like we should have done this last year. Well we did.. We just would not do it full time. HUGE MISTAKE
I agree Dallan that Favors on offense is best suited to cutting and staying close to the basket as opposed to being a jump shooter. Since TyCo insists on using Favors primarily as a 4 instead of a 5, I think that his long term impact could really be helped by the development of Enes Kanter. With those two in the lineup together, Kanter can be a mid to close range guy so Favors has room to operate. On Defense they can mix and match who guards who so as to get the most advantageous matchup as possible. Hopefully we still have Paul around to be our sixth-man. Then we could use a three man rotation of Kanter Favors Millsap.
If Favours plays center hopefully he can draw more fouls than Al, it was make up for is lack of range. And by lack of range i mean compared to Al and Millsap.
@Jako I do not even thinkit s necessarily just being close to the basket. When he posts up his numbers are horrible. His P&R numbers are great, his transition and his cuts are great. I think he could develop that 15 ft jumper easily I just think we need to run a system for it.
I would honestly like to know from people how we run a fluid motin offense with Al on the floor? This is a legit question I want to know what people think cause I do not see it work. Because you have to give him room to work. He is not a great passer so you have to make it easy by people standing in their spots.
Dallan Id like to look back and see what Favors’ post up numbers are with Al and Kanter VS. Just with Millsap. Because Kanter clogged the paint trying to get rebounds and Al clogged the paint because he is slow. Favs does need to polish his post footwork, but I have a hard time discluding Favors from completely offensively dominating in the future.
If corbin wants him to play at the floor though you are hindering favors development playing him alongside milsap. Favors has to develope a mid range game or, he will never be the star we expect from him. He at least needs a 15 foot jumper down or he wont be as effective on offence, he isnt shaq and, just knock people over and get to the rim. He has to learn to play along side al and, kanter especially since we all expect kanter to be are starting center in the near future. Kanter will be there plugging up the center iin a few years if he keeps developing so favors has to get use to that and, find how to put that ball in the bucket. With the paint being plugged up.
@Jazzed I am actually working on a piece for that. I am going through synergy so it will be up soon I think.
@Trevor I do agree with you sorta. I do agree he needs that 15 ft jumper I do not believe Kanter will clog the middle on offense he will be pick and pop guy out to the three line and Favors will be roll to the basket. Boozer could shoot that 15 ft jumper but what makes him so affective is he gets a lot of shots at the rim. I do think Favors needs the shot to make the defense honest but he will only take 3 a game for example. Not get sucked in out there and just be jacking them up. The problem with Al is not how or where he gets the ball it is how often and how often Favors does not get it because of this
From what I have seen in his international play, very little of it …is that Kanter has better range than any other Jazz frontcourt player already, even his three. Its true that Kanter was used to clog the paint last year, but that isn’t the strength of his game. He could be a lights out midrange shooter like Okur, but a better defender/rebounder.
I watched him play in Eurobasket last summer, which is like an all-star tournament basically … he was used as a stretch 4 or 5, Omer Asik was team Turkey’s anchor in the middle. He was on fire against Poland, free throw line and out jumpers, one after another.
It could be epic to see Kanter used that way alongside Derrick Favors … Kanter popping and Favors cutting to the rim … and hopefully a pg that will find them when they make their moves.
I totally agree with everyone that thinks Al is in the way, I thought he would have been traded by now already. Al is a great guy and a pretty decent center, but he is in the way of Kanter and Favors – they must play now, Favors especially.
I still think Favors has offensive tools and just a lack of confidence last year. Kanter and Favors were caged jack rabits last year. They need more consistant touches, but more than that they need plays that work for their game and their strengths. If Kanter doesnt shoot more deep this year, then Corbin failed him.
Favors and Millsap will be fine together. The addition of Marvin is huge. He can stay outside , but the Hawks played him at 4 most of the season last year. hes got post game and wingspan for post defensive help. So if Sap and Favors were on the floor with Marvin, thats 3 post players that can slash. that would be tough to gaurd on defense. And then you add Burks and MO slashing. I think we should completely dominate the paint this year.
