Less Oklahoma more Houston

With the big swinging star studded large market teams changing the way the NBA wins and making it apparent that a “superstar” (or maybe just David Stern) in this league is what gets you to the finals and  a championship;  Houston has decided to grab the bull by the horns. They are making a huge play to horde draft picks and get superstar caliber any way possible before the draft and free agency trading their previous hopefuls in Buddinger and Kyle Lowery.

http://bleacherreport.com/articles/1237878-nba-draft-2012-how-latest-trade-rumors-might-reshape-1st-round-selections

Is Houston just acting desperate or are they genius? Is taking advantage of this years talent crop and breaking up a mediocre talent laden team to find  top tier talent the wrong move?

as Locke  mentions  in numerous pod casts this year  their is rarely a top tier talent below the 5th pick of each draft and maybe one  superstar or all pro player out of the whole thing.  Statistically who are the jazz best talent.  The list is short: Derrick Favors #3 , Enes Kanter #3, Devin Harris #5  Everyone else should be expendable with that theory.

My opinion is Houston is right.  unless we use our assets to make a bigger jump for  talent we are not going to see the NBA finals this decade.

with lockout season holdouts does this draft have double the talent? Is there 2 allpro superstars?

So just for fun whats your Houston moves before and during draft day tomorrow?

My theory is that there actually is 2 superstars this year. We all know the first. Im going with Beal as the second star.

1. Millsap to Portland for #11

2. Jefferson and #11 to Toronto for #8 and James Johnson (mostly a move to lower our cap space)

3. Burkes and #8 back to portland for #6 , Wes Mathews, and agreement to not draft Lilliard (who they want at #6 and who should still be around at #8 if we didnt draft him)

4. Hayward to NOLA for #10

5.  #6, Harris, Jazz 2013 1st rnd pick to Wizzards  for #3

6.  If Celtics agree, then Wes Mathews for the celtics #21 and #22 picks.

7. #10, # 21, #22  to Bobcats for the #2 and Tyrus Thomas contract (what the bobcats want to get rid of for the deal to work).

8. Use the GSW 1st rnd pick  to lube the deal if Wizzards #3 or Bobcats #2 isnt enough.

9. I think Favors is going to to be a superstar, Kanter at least an allstar. So IMO we would be better with MKG and Beal. But if we wanted to get the sure thing and  If our GSW pick is not used . Offer NOLA #2, #3,and Gsw 1st round pick for #1 Davis.

IMO this would give the Jazz a for sure Big 3 superstars out of  Favors, Beal, MKG, and Kanter. Could opt to keep wes Mathews and #10 pick instead of getting MKG. Using the #10 for what ever gap needs filled.

I would grab Kendall Marshell at #10 and Machado at #47.

CAP SPACE = +22 mil

*Let Bell and Earl Walk and eat the difference.

FREE AGENCY= about 15 mil left sign three point shooter role players with whats left with short contracts

Negotiate  for:

Ryan Anderson (just withdrew from USA select team to not risk injury for FA market)

Steve Novak

Landry Fields

Javale Mcgee

ROSTER

PG  Marshell/ Machado/Beal

SG Beal/Mathews/ Fields

SF MKG/ Novak/Fields

PF Favors/ Anderson/ Evans

C   Kanter/Favors/Mcgee

Considering the Jazz have only made 5 trades in the last decade (source: ESPN Utah Jazz team transactions), then I would have to say that 7-9 in one day, or one summer, or even one decade is a fairly ridiculous and as far of a pipedream as stating the team should acquire deron, dwight, durant, lebron, and derrick rose all on the same team.

  2. John says:

Houston isn’t looking for draft picks. They want dwight Howard.

Besides youre putting a lot of trust into rookies, if it doesn’t work out. The jazz would be screwed.

  3. Thank god none of you people are the GM.

  4. @Nick Knows All. HAHAHAHAHA ONe of the best comments I’ve seen in a while.

  5. The point is: we arent as loaded with talent as everyone is acting. We arent close to OKC because our 2 #3 pick talents are currently headed for limited playing time for next season. We have no legit 3pt shooting. No team leader or floor general. So having young players is the same as having veterens that dont lead. Might as well make trades and get talent.

Getting the best talent Enes at #3 last year was the right move. But now is the time to use assests to make that pick and other lottery picks hold their weight and play them. Surround them with peices that are going to work. Holding on to Al and Millsap for one more weak playoff run is pointless. I would rather take a shot at adding more talent in the right positions and playing them alot of minutes than watch a bunch of veteran Divas cry about playing time and fake injuries.

I don’t think anyone’s arguing about getting rid of al Jefferson, or devin harris. Where people disagree is trading milsap. And getting rid of hayward and burke will only set us back.

  7. Its a tough Call. I definitely want Millsap to stay the rest of his career. Heart and soul and I watched him in college. I would love to see us bring his brother Elijah on to the team as well. The problem is contract money. Sap deserves big bank roll. Hes earned full salary. Hes earned starter minutes. But we Have 2 # 3 pick bigger players behind him that fill the post and defend the post a little better. My dream is him moving to the 3 spot and signing Elijah at the #2 , moving burkes to PG. But i just dont see the jazz doing it so far.

Hayward and Burkes are good players, but would you keep them over getting Beal or MKG? its something to think about if we want to be serious about contending in a few years.

  8. Gerald says:

Jazz uponit, the way Hayward has started playing and taking his leaps, no one thought he would do that. Comparing him to a normally strong draft (to what the other players he was drafted with are doing) now people would have drafted him in the top 5, not #9. So you want to trade developing/proving talent for unknown talent around the same draft pick. Then what he is being compared to with people already in the league…Hayward is looking like a really good talent that no one knew about because he came on so later in age.

With Burks, we don’t know yet. He was drafted 12, so there might be something there with using him to get a high pick in the draft this year but it’s still a Craps shoot.

  9. Yeah I agree , I would have put Hayward at #5. I liked picking him with our #9. And he will be good. Maybe all star. There was some good players in that draft. We got 2 of the top 5 from that year.

But if I could trade him and Burks for Beal I would. I like Hayward and Burks potential alot, I am just convinced that there are 2 marquee players that will be franchise changing league stars out of this draft and Beal is that 2nd guy.

Reason I think so is, the jump he made last year was astounding. He is only 18 and was an absolute force in college. Has the best mechanics and pure shot in college, quick release and unlike most great shooters in this draft. He had a target on him all year. Defenders in his grill on most every shot. Yeah there are alot of good shooters that shot a better % in college, but none with the consistent pressure he got on his shots. He will be much more open in the NBA with other scoring threats.

Beal is a great defender, he hustles, good motor (especially for a shooter), has a great body build for his age with a frame to put on even more muscle which will give him durability like Chauncy Billups and Andre Miller. Long arms, big hands. All the greats do both well, score and play D.

The downside from doubters on Beal is Athleticism. If thats true then it seems there is no downside. He has a 39″ vert and top 10 in the combine on lateral and quicks. I think he benched 8 on strength, at 18 years old! His ball IQ is great , good timed passing, good timing in passing lanes. Has a nose for rebounds and his handles are good enough that he could be an option at point. Hell every other SG in the league does now. So yeah, I think he is very legit.

  10. I dont see any ground breaking PGS in the draft, but I cant get over Dion Waiters potential. Whats that dude going to be like? because with that build and power he is tough to gaurd. He is an excellent passer, very quick, shooting stroke has potential. Tears it up on defense .And if he ends up having good enough handles to run combo gaurd and stays out of foul trouble, that guy will be a beast.

Another guy I think is pretty underrated is Deron Lamb. Its hard to get much spotlight next to Davis and MKG and Jones, but He is pure at his position, good defender and awesome stroke. I like his shooting 2nd to Beal, mostly because of the competition he was shooting against.

MKG probably all star, Barnes all star. Not sure why but Im just not sold on Robinson.

  11. Gerald says:

Jazzed uponit, so the majority of things you said about Beal are things about Hayward. There are things about Hayward that Beal doesn’t have. Also, people more experienced than you say that Hayward will be an All-Star. Heck, already on the Select Team. I just think it it would be stupid to trade Hayward for someone that has the same possibility but more of a risk.

I think if you put someone like MKG or Barnes on the Jazz with Hayward and Favors, crazy things would happen. Trading Hayward isn’t addition from subtraction, its subtraction from subtraction.

Also, now you are just throwing out names in your second post. So all of these guys are going to be All-Stars? Also, I know what Beal had in the combine. There are some people that compare him to Ray Allen, but the thing is, Ray Allen never shot as low as Beal did.

  12. names like dion waiters . He just went # 4. I guess time will tell between hayward and beal . haywards going to have a good career . I just think beals will be special
