Utah Jazz and NBA Updates 09.17

Posted by: David J. Smith on September 17th, 2012

The author's views are entirely his or her own and may not reflect the views of the Utah Jazz.

A few quick punches for a Monday morning:

  • According to sources, small forward Josh Howard will be working out for the San Antonio Spurs today. The Spurs have long been interested in the free agent’s services, and perhaps Scott Layden, San Antonio’s new assistant GM, will help in that process. Brian T. Smith of the Salt Lake Tribune also tweeted out that Howard is interested in resigning with the Jazz, but that the unresolved Raja Bell saga is preventing that from happening. The Spurs seem to have the Midas touch, in that everything they touch turns to gold–a mere look at their roster is teeming with evidence: unheralded free agent signings (Matt Bonner, Danny Green), draft day successes (Tony Parker, Manu Ginobili, Kawhi Leonard, Dejuan Blair), and veteran reclamation projects (Boris Diaw, Stephen Jackson). Although they have also worked out other free agents like Jason Kapono and Tracy McGrady, Howard seems to make a lot of sense for the Spurs. And if they nab him, watch him average 12 an 4 on 50% shooting. After all, it is the Spurs.
  • I still cling to the hope that San Antonio (or OKC or LAL) opts to ink Tracy McGrady. That would naturally eliminate them from any second-round contention in the postseason.
  • On Friday, the Jazz signed their second-round pick, shooting guard Kevin Murphy. I am just learning about him, but I cannot help but be excited for him. His enthusiasm and pinch-me-is-this-real reaction on Twitter has been fun to watch, as has been the reaction of his supporters. We’re excited to have him in the fold!
  • So many Western Conference teams have had nice offseasons. Besides the obvious example of the evil Los Angeles Lakers, Minnesota (adding Brandon Roy, Andrei Kirilenko, Chase Budinger, Alexey Shved, Greg Stiemsma), the Clippers (Lamar Odom, Grant Hill, Jamal Crawford, Ronny Turiaf, Willie Green, Matt Barnes, resigned Chauncey Billups), Golden State (Harrison Barnes, Jarrett Jack, Carl Landry, resigned Brandon Rush), Dallas (Chris Kaman, Elton Brand, OJ Mayo, Darren Collison, Dahntay Jones, resigned Delonte West’s finger), and New Orleans (Anthony Davis, Ryan Anderson, Austin Rivers, Robin Lopez. Hakim Warrick) have all impressed me.
  • Where do you think the Jazz stand (adding Mo Williams, Marvin Williams, Randy Foye, and Murphy)?

  1. You can tell Josh Howard that Jazz are not interested and he can go ahead an retire now. If we end up with Raja or Howard on our roster by the time the season starts I will be very disappointed.

  2. Good post though I enjoyed it.

  3. Dean Davies says:

The one upside on Raja’s buyout not being done yet, Josh Howard cant sign for Jazz

  4. Michael says:

@David – I always enjoy your info… Personally, I think the Jazz are a very smart organization and have added players that can help our deficiencies from last season. We can be a heck of a team with our anchoring front court with the right pieces around them (it looks better than last year). Overall, I think we have added the best quality group (for what we gave up, and now what we have). Go Jazz!

  5. Diana says:

I think the Jazz will finish 7th or 8th. I hope higher but with how stale our offense was last season yet the iso offense seemingly what ty wanted its hard to see us finishing higher.

  6. Fan says:

Great information David, thanks. I think the Jazz will come in about the same place as last year, maybe a place or two higher. The Jazz did some good things, but as your article states, so did some of ht other Western Conference teams. I am especially interested in watching the Timberwolves with the addition of AK to play along side Kevin Love.

  7. L.K.Anderson says:

Again good post David. Unless he is very impressive I hope the Jazz send Murph to the D-League right away. But the Jazz feel like rookies watching the Vets is far more valuable. But with plenty of playing time for lets say three to four weeks Murph will be better off IMHO. Unless the Wolves plan on playing Roy as a spot up shooter for minimum minutes I think they will regret signing him..Also AK always misses about a third of the season in the NBA for injuries.

  8. I think the acquisitions this summer are perfect. Great fits for the jazz. Tough players , better defensive talent. Better 3pt shooting. And they are in their prime.

If Ty takes some control and improves on lineups I dont think its unfair to say deep playoff run. Our bench is scary

  9. Nathan says:

Yeah, I don’t know who I’d rather see on Utah’s roster of one had to stay- probably Howard just because he doesn’t have an attitude.

Even though we see Utah as having potentially made leaps and bounds in the offseason (mostly in the backcourt because our front court is already more than set), it doesn’t look like Utah made any big moves in the off-season, but I think that small pieces can make big differences sometimes. Two things Utah has to improve after the last couple seasons are 1) defense, and 2) perimeter shooting. Adding 4 36%+ career 3P shooters to their squad should help the perimeter shooting, but I’m still skeptical about Utah’s defense. Hopefully this is the year they get it right, but it wouldn’t hurt to have Millsap, Favors, and Jefferson in the front court. I think Evans and Kanter make a nice complementary pair as well. Evans can jump up and grab everthing not within a 5 food radius of Kanter. The perimeter defense has to be on par also- no more letting teams take 20+ 3’s when they shooting 50%. I’m just not too confident we have the defenders for those positions- Burks and Hayward are going to have to really step up this season- offensively AND defensively.

Williams (MA) took Harris place on the 360 web page.If Jefferson is traded who will take his place??
