Francisco Elson: The Rumor

Posted by: Fan on August 31st, 2010

The author's views are entirely his or her own and may not reflect the views of the Utah Jazz.

The rumor all over Twitter and from Hoopshype tonight  is that  Elson not only worked out for the Jazz but  is definitely considering signing with Utah.  Since there is a good post and comments on this topic from a few days ago and since it has dropped off the screen and not everyone likes to scroll back through posts, I want to draw you attention to it and hopefully someone may have more information or additional comments

i know i already made a comment on the other post about not wanting him, but i forgot my fan etiquettes. so if we sign him i will treat him like a rookie and give him his chance to prove himself. welcome to the jazz francisco elson. (if the rumors are true)

  2. I looked on hoopshype and the only one i see is that he worked out with the jazz, nothing about interest in signing.

  3. nevermind found it on twitter….well he isnt a superstar but if you look at it in the way that he is replacing the KOOF than I’m happy.

  4. Chase says:

Yah I guess his skill set is that of “the koof” and maybe then some. We’ll see how it plays out. I guess we really don’t have money to get another semi good player. So we gather the scraps to fill our roster. I’m ok with that. Heres to him breaking out in training camp and pre-season.

  5. Eric says:

I don’t know why everyone is so against this signing, he played at least a decent role on the spurs championship team a few years ago. Sure he’s old and really not THAT good but lets face the facts, the Jazz are a thin team right now. We really just need someone to come in and provide some rebounding and toughness when our starters are out. Plus he can add some veteran presence. This would be a great signing for the Jazz

  6. JC says:

He will fill a void and give us some quality minutes; he can rebound, occasionally block a shot, and he is an okay passer. Not much on the offensive end of things but I seem to recall that he used to have some semblance of a low-post game (go back about 4-5 years I think…)

  7. Stefano says:

i hoped we add amundson…i don’t like elson

  8. Byron says:

Elson is more athletic than Jarron Collins ever was. If JC can play in Utah, so can Elson. Besides, he’s 7′ and an extra 6 fouls.

  9. Diana says:

Like JC pointed out he fills a void. He did well against us in 2007 with the Spurs.
Whats wrong with signing an experienced 7 footer who will just be a backup?

  10. Dave801 says:

He’s a 7 foot veteran people, thats an upgrade from Goofus. He’ll sign for the 1 year minimum. Theres not alot money left to play with and 7 footers can usually find warm benches to sit on anywhere. Be thankful, it could be worse.

  11. Colby says:

I don’t understand why we are looking for another center.
i really figured from what has been said that jefferson is going to be starting center. that leaves us with two other centers in Okur and Fes.
If anything we need to find another PF. This guy has been riddled with injuries.

  12. Andrew says:

He played well in the WCF against us, plus starting about 52 games for SAS and Denver means he can handle the ball well. It’s a huge upgrade over Fes and Koufus. The Jazz need the size and length this year, and next year we’ll most likely be having Tomic coming over. Getting excited for that. Hopefully there won’t be a lockout next season, I need my Jazz fix. lol, I know it’s not till 2011, but still worried they won’t get a new CBA…

  13. TACOREV says:

A veteran 7-footer? I’ll take it. No doubt he would be an upgrade over Koufos if nothing else

  14. Michael King says:

True he is an upgrade to Fes and Koufus, and the other thing some seem to be forgetting is that Fes still hasn’t signed the offer sheet. He currently remains a restricted FA. With that, it is possible that we won’t be seeing Fes on our roster next year as well, which makes picking up Elson that much better. I’m hoping thats the case, because then we can have Jefferson start at Center, Millsap at PF, and Elson can come off the bench as our C until Memo comes back. AK will likely be our backup PF, while playing some time at the 3.

  15. David says:

    7 footer take it

but if jazz dont am still avaible
5,9 ft teenager that can dunk (Well not really)

  16. Eric says:

@Michael-Exactly what I was thinking. Fes doesn’t really seem to want to sign that contract unless he can get more years on it so there is a chance that he could walk. We definitely need this signing because if Fes decides to walk then were stuck with 1 undersized (although VERY good) center and one injured 3 point shooter who is afraid of the paint.

@Colby-I think when we first signed Al Jefferson the Jazz were viewing him as more of a PF. Most line-up predictions for the Jazz (when healthy) have actually had Big Al at PF and Okur at C with Milsap coming off the bench. I see your concern with signing a C instead of a PF but I think that our big men are versatile enough that we could play most of them at either the PF or C position (Jefferson and Okur). I think from what we saw last year, Sloan is good enough to manage the players he has and put them in at the right time. Basically what I’m trying to say is, sign the guy and let Sloan work his magic.

  17. Justin says:

This guy is a 7 footer, and a 7 year veteran. If he can catch a basketball, he might just be an upgrade over Fes. Any time you can get a big man, especially in our situation with injuries to the bigs etc, you need to pick them up.

I wonder if folks understand just how serious Memo’s injury was. At one point, I was wondering if he would ever even play again.

He will do better in our system than elsewhere.

  18. Chris says:

I’m pretty happy to hear about Elson coming here. I watched his college career and was excited when he came to the NBA; then he never lived up to the expectations. Hopefully he’ll be a credible backup with the Jazz and find the motivation to meet some of the expectations that were on him when he joined the league! At the very least, this means we aren’t giving minutes to some garbage player like Karen Collins or Justa Doofus.

  19. Chris says:

He’s kept the same profile his whole life. He’s a bit dirty, not a very good shooter from the field at all because he doesn’t have the strength to maintain his balance through the contact he creates, but reasonable at generating enough contact to get to the line, where his form is much better and he hits around 70% of his attempts. The contact he initiates on both ends of the floor will lead to more fouls called during reserve time, resulting in more rest for Jazz starters with less minutes out of the game. He’s a good fit for a team with a lack of depth, which is exactly what we are (at least at the Guard and Center positions) this season. There are a lot of reasons to believe he’ll fill his role admirably at the back of the Jazz’ big man rotation.
