New Season Expectations – Opening Game
Posted by: Deniz on October 28th, 2012
The author's views are entirely his or her own and may not reflect the views of the Utah Jazz.Hello again everybody,
As you know the new season will start in 4 days and we have a opening match against Dalaas Mavericks.
I think we had a great pre-season and our prospects ( especially Favors and Kanter ) did well. And for the new season, I really want to watch Kevin Murphy’s performance. ( I think he will be a solid SG for us in the future ). Finally, I hope we crush Dallas
So, these are mine thoughts. What is YOUR thoughts-expectations about our opening game against Mavericks and the new season?

I expect to beat the Nowirzki-less Mavs at home.
How about that Thunder-Rockets trade?? Martin and others for Harden and others. Say goodbye to a Jazz Rockets trade.
I think the team is set until at least trade deadline.
If the players buy into a team effort they will be great..
@L.K Anderson… many people think Rockets got better deal with the trade and I don’t think so. Thunder got Martin who lead the Rockets many seasons and he has great ability. Also they had Lamp. However Rockets only got Harden and lost thier star player with a prospect. That’s my view on the trade.
With out a doubt the Thunder get the best out of this deal in my opinion. Harden had a great year last year but wow Houston gave up a lot and over time I think the Thunder will come out on top on this. @Deniz not sure we will see much of Murphy this year but I agree I do believe he will bring a lot to the Jazz. Personally I think we have a great 11 to 12 man rotation and I hope Corbin will stick with it and not try to move around so much like he did last year. My opinion is we hardly see Murphy as the 13th option and I really hope we do not see Watson and I am glad Bell is staying home. I am excited for the season GO JAZZ……
Mo Williams – Tinsley/Burke
Hayward – Foye/Burke
Mo Williams – Carroll/Evans
Milsap – Favors
Big Al – Kantar
Yes I just realized I spelled Burks and Millsap incorrectly.
Well I guess you snooze you lose…
OKC is set up for the next 5 years: draft PJ3 with the 28 pick, Hollis Thompson undrafted signee, snag Lamb and Martin (who will sign for less with championship contender), two future 1st, and a 2nd. Thats why Presti is GM of the year. They are about 4 centers in this years draft–look for OKC to hit on one of those.
Too bad b**ch ass Delonte West isnt playing on Wednesday, would love for Hayward to show him up.
I hope will be our starting C
Enes damn!
It was a nine player deal so Houston got more than Harden.Rockets also need to get down to fifteen players.
Martin is in the same boat as AK. Does anyone on these posts remember him playing even close to a full season?? So that needs to be factored in. Thunder steal Lamb plus two firsts and a second. So I would agree Thunder got the best of the deal. Harden gave up the chance for a ring for a few paultry Million.
Martin will most likely leave to sign for a good contract, Thunder wont offer him $10m+. But if Rockets have a bad couple of years the Thunder will get good draft picks.
Cant wait for the first game of the season, it will be interesting to see the rotation at the start of the season
Thunder won that hands down. @dean – I dont think there’s an if about the rockets having a bad couple of years
Houston got the best player in the deal and OKC got the better end of the deal. I this deal will prove how important chemistry is in a teams success. NO QUESTION KEVIN DURRANT IS PISSED!! haha so we will see how he and the rest of the thunder respond.
@LK I wouldnt rule out a houston deal at all.. they gave up a lot, but they have a lot more! They still have plenty of young movable piece on their roster Patrick Patterson, Royce White, Donatas Motiejue, Terrence Jones, AND marcus morris… And thats just guys in the frontcourt
Harden pretty much got himself traded. Instead id focusing on Heat in the finals, he was partying in South Beach with rap stars til the early morning. Then he comes into camp out of shape. OKC is smart not to max out a guy like that. Lamb is a longer SG and can be just as good. Great trade for OKC. Houston didnt get screwed at all.
Houston has become a younger team, I wonder if they are looking for some vets….
After the Jazz traded D-Will it kind of set the stage where “Anybody can get traded.” I still think the key will be Martins health. Jones and Lamb might be called on early to fill the shoes. A writer for Hoopsworld said the deal clearly takes Thunder out of the talks to go all the way. I don’t think I would go that far. But Jazz chances were not hurt at all by the deal.
Houston is looking at Aldridge, Josh Smith or Paul Millsap to bring in trade not out of question yet.
All in all OKC got the better end of the deal, however they lost some toughness. Martin is always hurt and he has always come across as a soft player. Lamb is a very solid pickup, but also needs to toughen up.
As for the Jazz, I am pumped. I agree with LK, if they buy into team ball, they can make some real noise.
I’m looking forward to the start of 2012-13. Hopefully, much of what was good in the pre-season will carry over into the regular season and beyond. For example, Kanter’s vast improved play; improved 3-point shooting with the Williams, Hayward, and Foye; continued blocking of shots and great defense by Favors.
Still need to work on increasing the number of assists that means more touches by more teammates for hopefully easy baskets. Continue to develop a strong team defense concept along with better pick-and-roll defense.
Everyone on the team needs to play 48 minutes of hell defense. There’s a decent bench so everyone needs to put out maximum effort for as long as each can knowing there’s a strong substitute waiting to do the same.
Go Jazz!
@Ray I would agree with your last statement everyone needs to know someone is behind them and will take over if they are not capable. The only problem is will the coach have the gonads to do something like that and pull out Foye,Jefferson,Paul or Mo if they are not playing hard or getting killed on defense?? I really do not know. So far I would say what we have seen the answer is no he will not. And it is to bad because if not then we are going to struggle in a lot of games not being able to defend.
Everyone pretty much has Portland low on the totem pole so for us to struggle against them is not a very good sign. I think Portland will be better then expected but I still think the talent we have is much better then them. So we should not have struggled with them at all.
The regular season is coming though and hopefully things will be different when the games matter. But the games mattered last year and the coaching did not change..
I’m still not sold on the Jefferson-Millsap combo being a good defensive unit (slow C, undersized PF), AND being able to get out and run the floor in the new ‘fast pace offense’. Millsap maybe, but how many fast break dunks are we expecting out of Jefferson?
Dallan mentioned Houston might still be looking at Millsap in a possible trade. They have a lot of young assets still. I think that might be the Jazz best move at this point. Might as well get a young draft pick or future draft pick out of it if his plans are to move on after this season.
@KC:
You know as well as I do that Millsap’s plans are not to move on. The question is, are the jazz willing to pay millsap 10+ million a year? I don’t think that can be answered yet because there is a lot that depends. How well do the jazz do this year? If the jazz want to keep Al, will he come back for less money? Does Favors progress like he’s expected? How much money will he and Hayward command when their rookie deals are up? Of course, these questions won’t matter if there’s an irresistable trade that all of a sudden presents itself.
Frankly, Houston couldn’t, IMO, offer an irrestible trade for Millsap because they have no established players we could take back besides Harden that would equal Millsap’s production level. Parsons? Not enough. Terrence Jones? A rookie. They have no one, but if the point is to get assets (youngs plus picks) then Houston would be a good option. However, the jazz would only ship millsap for picks and youngs if they knew they were going to lose him. Why ship out great talent you have now for potential talent that may pan out to nothing?
I know I know, for $$ reasons i.e. OKC and Harden, but like I said, that question can’t be answered right now with the jazz and Millsap, so I do not see the jazz letting millsap go for potential only. For equal talent at another position, maybe. But not simply assets.
I think Ben is right. The right trade has to come along. Bell would be a throw in and not a main component.
Salaries have to be close also so for a AL trade to Rockets they would have to throw in a half dozen players.
I have always said no to any Sap trade. But after seeing Harden go anything can happen. But let us get something of value and not some one elses trash.
Probably would not happen but Blazers need help in the front court. They love Sap but would the give up Lillard to get him?? That one I would buy into. A three team deal might be needed.
I want to see the team play as it is. As I read it, team chemistry is very good, and from my experience (on a different level, of course) that’s a very important thing.
