Meet
Jimmer
Posted by: Diana on June 6th, 2011
The author's views are entirely his or her own and may not reflect the views of the Utah Jazz. When Jackson Emery worked out with the Jazz last week it was suppose to be about him and his future career in basketball, it didn’t take long however for Jackson’s interview to be all about Jimmer.
The BYU back court running mates had a special year. Never has so much media attention been poured upon BYU basketball and it was all because of Jimmer.
Jackson when asked if he has had or will be having workouts with anymore NBA teams, responded with
In the past couple weeks he’s been a lot more agressive, learning how to do things defensively, asking questions. Thats the one thing about Jimmer once there are doubters he wants to prove the doubters wrong. Even a good defender college level, go to play derrick rose, he’s going to go off.
Jimmer has had his doubters at every level of ball, Jimmer has always seemed to be able to prove his doubters wrong. Jimmer seems to once again be proving his doubters wrong with his workouts the last few weeks. Before workouts Jimmer was projected to go in the 17-20 range (unless of course Utah or Phoenix went crazy taking him at 12 or 13). Throughout the workouts Jimmer has slowly been moving up, now there is talk he may even go as high as 7 to Sacramento.
Greg Miller touched on Jimmer in a recent interview on 1320 KFAN (interview here) . Greg of course talked about how the Jazz’s standard is to always take the best player available regardless of position and need. Greg went on to say that however when you get down to 12 there are not many impact players. There is not much difference between picks 12-15. If Jimmer is in that range and maybe not even 12 on their board he will probably be picked.
Greg said how Jimmer could bring other things to the Jazz. Greg said how he has never had so much input from people about any other player and its 20-1 in being positive for Jimmer. Greg also mentioned that the Jazz have talked a lot about what drafting Jimmer could bring to the Jazz. The Jazz have figured his jersey sales would match the jersey sales of the Finals years. Greg did say however that all of that wears off if the Jazz are not winning, so Jimmer will only be picked if its whats best for the team.

People talk about him not playing defense. But Kemba Walker is worse and no one even mentions it. Jimmer talks about how he developed hs long shots and said that was the only way he could beat his brother and his friends. I trust KOC will make the best choice. But then we do not have a say in that anyway. I will go out on a limb and say that Jimmer will have success in the NBA. And it will be sooner than later. He has the guts and character to do it and sometimes that is better than raw talent. Here is to Jimmer at twelve!!
Great job Diana! Love hearing an “insider’s” perspective on Jimmer. You know me…I would be just fine having Jimmer in a Jazz uniform. And I also hope the best for Jackson.
Makes us anticipate the Jimmer workout even more…
Thanks! I agree LK having attending every home game that Jimmer has every played in at BYU I think there is too much made of his lack of defense, I’ve seen him play it. He did as a sophomore and some last year. This year was different. I think what he brings offensively totally outweighs defensive concerns, and like you said Jimmer has guts and character. I love that he knows how to win and is a winner.
I can’t wait for the Jimmer workout I imagine he’ll be at his best for the Jazz. Do you guys watch his youtube clips. He had one were he mentioned how he’d like to play for the Jazz.
David—- #JimmertotheJazz!!!!
The one thing I can’t stand about being a Jazz fan is BYU Jazz fan. BYU players hardly ever translate to the NBA. Can anyone just write for this blog?
Jimmer has one skill and thats his jumpshot. There are many other draft prospects that can shoot the ball plus they have skills on the defensive end. Enough of the homerism and get off of your knees already!
TJ there is no reason to insult people. I reported what Jackson Emery and Greg Miller said and provided a link for a mock draft from someone who is considered an expert. In the post I didn’t share my personal opinion about Jimmer, in my comment I did.
Its not only BYU fans who think Jimmer will do well, go read any news on the draft, he is there and people (experts) like him.
Im sorry young lady. Its INCREDIBLY one sided and biased.
Your Bishop may find it cute. See if he’ll give it a good review.
Loved the post Diana! I think Jimmer has all of the tangible to make a great NBA player. Offensive abilities are what keep you in the league and there’s no question Jimmer has those. I just can’t understand how Kemba gets talked up so much while Jimmer just gets belittled when both players are in the exact same position.
Jimmer will be great, maybe not an Allstar, but he’ll definitely make an impact on whichever team drafts him. I hope that team is the Jazz
@TJ your bigotry is juvenile and completely unacceptable for this site. Please take your narrow minded views elsewhere
TJ no need for any of this. Diana does a great job and as she stated, national media would not rank Jimmer Fredette so high if he wasn’t truly talented. It’s fine to have different opinions, but no need to be rude.
TJ, Diana knows more about basketball, Jazz and BYU than you probably do in your pinky finger and she is absolutely right. If you have actually looked into this draft, scouts, writers and GMs there is a reason why his draft stock has soared from 20’s to up to #7. he has more to offer than people ever realized. He is not just a jumpshot. He can get to the rim with the best of them, draw fouls with the best of them and has the work ethic of any top athlete in the NBA. Drafting Jimmer to this team, even at #3 will NOT be a mistake and I don’t care what anyone says…i’m not even a BYU fan and never have been, I just know a good basketball player when I see one.
@TJ Wake up on the wrong side of the bed?
First of all,I don’t know what blog you read, but this is hardly biased. It’s pretty much all quotes and facts, not a whole lot of opinion.
Second of all, are we not all entitled to our own opinion? You don’t like Jimmer, Diana does. It’s as simple as that, no one’s opinion is more important than anothers.
Third of all, maybe you could show a little respect in your comments? Come on dude, are you really bringing in religion to this (bishop comment)?
Obviously you don’t like Jimmer, obviously you don’t like the blog, but this doesn’t mean you have to be disrespectful about it.
TJ if you’re going to criticize, please bring something to the table besides “BYU players hardly ever translate to the NBA.” Is that a serious argument? Cause I’m glad the Jazz didn’t use it against Gordon Hayward. Or Jeremy Evans. Or CJ Miles. Or Andrei Kirilenko. Or Karl Malone. Or John Stockton. Have I made my point?
More annoying than the irrational Jimmer love (which I fail to see here), is those who have some kind of a beef with BYU or mormons (which you seemed to make pretty clear) and brings that bias into their comments instead of discussing the post. Your arguments against Jimmer were generic, worn out, and show that you’re either not following the NBA draft very closely, or you’ve let your bias against BYU cloud your comments on this post. Which is ironic because that’s the exact thing you accused OP of doing.
I apologize.
TJ, you aren’t cool for coming on to the internet and try to be as rude as possible. Like it or not, Jimmer has been impressing teams at workouts. I don’t think he’ll go at 7, but it sure it a possibility. I’m not sure how he’ll work out in the NBA, but for all we know he could end up being a star. Nice article Diana!
nice post btw Diana. I’m still iffy on The Jimmer, but he is growing on me a little more each day. Right now he is one of the 3 main players that I want at #12 (Burks and Singleton being the others).
I was once an anti Fredette to Utah Jazz man.. I thought like others that he would not translate to the NBA level and that his athleticism would keep him from being able to be effective defensively.
Now I like Fredette. I just dont see how we end up taking him, unless we draft Williams or Kanter with the 3rd pick.. Although I dont believe Walker may be better than Fredette, I do Believe Knight is better than Fredette. I have no doubts that Knight will come into the league and do very well. How do you pass on Knight? Knowing that you are filling your other needs, the gaping hole, and if you can accomplish that, you can feel comfortable drafting Fredette.
First Scenerio, Williams is available and we feel that he fills our need at SF. If so, well then its a toss up and drafting Fredette next is not an issue, although there are other player, shooters who could help as well. But if we have a starting lineup of solid guys, drafting Fredette isnt a bad idea. Just remember its not the only good idea either Jimmer freaks.. LOL
Second Scenerio, You draft Kanter, trade a big away for a Granger like player filling your SF need. Then again, you feel secure and can draft Fredette, though as above there are other options.
Third Scenerio, You trade down from 3rd with the Wizards for their two picks of 6th and 18th. You can then draft Burks or Leonard 6th, Fredette 12th, and then Motiejunas, Singleton, Hamilton, Brooks, Honeycutt or even Jackson 18th.
Of course there are other scenerios. The thing to remember is that with our current roster, the wing is our hole. Even if you have faith in Miles, believe that Evans and or Millsap can make the jump to fill in at the 3, the wing is our pothole. We need perimeter defense, shooting, and rebounding from our wings. It should be adressed this offseason. Once we are a bit more solid there, then taking the chance on Jimmer isnt a bad idea. Again you can do that in the draft of via free agency, but full the pothole.
If all else fails, and we dont get Fredette as many people would like, there is always this guy. They call him the other Fredette. They could be twins, combine stats, size, shooting, etc etc, is scary similar. Just a thought.

Are all BYU Jazz fans this sensitive?
If you are willing to put your work out there, you should be prepared for criticism. I admit that I made some unnecessary comments as a joke to get under your skin. If I knew how sensitive you and and your friends were, I shouldn’t have made those comments. I apologize.
The good writers out there are objective. I enjoy a good balanced article. Thats all.
Goudelock is an amazing player, the thing is he played against very low skilled teams so that makes me very stand offish on him. His one outstanding game was against UNC.
Thanks everyone for your comments. And thanks TJ for apologizing.
I do think there are other options at 12 that could help. Jimmer is just my leading guy there.
Patrick you bring up some interesting thoughts. It seems like the Jazz tend to have always been afraid of getting too young, I wouldn’t be surprised if there is a trade in the works.
@Diana: Looks like you got some good supportive friends out there. That is a valuable gift.. I don’t know how many of you remember Steve Kerr as a player. He won rings I think with the Bulls and Spurs. He was more or less one dementional player that could bury many threes in a row. They used to bring him in near the end of a quarter or the end of a game and he would hit four or five threes in a row and the daggar had been placed. The tide shifting in the NBA has a lot to do with the outcome of the game. “You got Jimmered” is a phrase you will hear again.
I wonder what would have happened if Goudelock would have been on BYU and Fredette on the Charleston Cougers?
Fredette interests me, especially with all the possibilities, and what ifs. He has heart, and you can see he would be well liked here. Its too bad we couldnt trade off Bell and Miles for another late lottery pick and nab him. That would be like a worry free pick… LOL Even if Fredette bombed, what are we out..LOL
Anyone think that the Warriors, Suns, Bobcats, or Pacers would bite? Bell and Miles for your late lottery pick?
@patrick Goudelock wouldn’t have been as successful and Jimmer would have averaged over 35 points a game.
Jimmer has proved all teams this summer that he is capable of anything and being a legit NBA player, not just a jump shooter. Goudelock has pretty much shown the same thing he has in college, a good shooter.
All I can say to this? Poor Jackson! He has a future as a player and all the media wants to talk about is JIMMER? I’ve give up on the Jimmer hating, because whatever happens happens. But this is wrong. This. Is. Wrong. How dare the media not allow Jackson to be Jackson and answer questions about HIS game? How dare they focus on Jimmer when Jimmer will be working out at some point.
I get that the answer to this is ratings but really, the media needs to give the kid some respect for what HE can do as a player.
This just infuriates me and, even though it is no fault of Fredette’s, makes me dislike him even more.
Hey Shauna thanks for your comment. I should clarify. Jackson did get questions about himself. I didn’t cover it since the post was about Jimmer.
He talked a lot about what he needs to do to make it in the NBA/over-seas. He talked about his defense, he talked about the differences between BYU and the workout he had with the Jazz.
I didn’t cover that in this post I probably should have. Jackson did bring up Jimmer on his own it wasn’t all the media.
I was wondering if he did bring Jimmer up on his own. I still feel bad for any former BYU player entering the draft. There’s going to be a lack of focus on their talents because of the media hype about Jimmer. I don’t care if Jimmer is the son of God returned and the new chosen one, move over Lebron. It isn’t fair to these kids who are trying to make it in the NBA on their own merits.
Anyway, my two cents.
TJ, ever heard of Danny Ainge? He’s Mormon AND went to BYU. Double whammy. So shut up.
Anyways Diana, great post. It’s been forever since I watched a Jimmer highlight video, I’ve forgotten a bit how well that kid can ball. There’s players, and then there’s ballers. Jimmer is definitely a baller. I think he’ll be the Steve Kerr style player that LK mentioned, but he’s more versatile than a jump shot. And watching that video shows very clearly Jimmer can and does distribute the rock very well, he just didn’t have the most amazing supporting cast at BYU to help him out on the offensive side of the ball. He’s gonna be good in the NBA. I say Jimmer to the Jazz.
Warming up a little on Jimmer. At the least you know the guy will work hard and want to be in Utah.
I will be glad when the draft is over and the lockout can begin. Then people won’t be so ohnery..
@ Spencer I do remember Danny Ainge. I bet you don’t because you probably hadn’t been conceived yet. Newbies. Someday you’ll learn. One athlete every 35 years and you are bragging??
You are just cementing my opinion of BYU Jazz fan.
Go Duke! A real college program!
I’m starting to accept that Jimmer won’t be on the board at 12 so that I don’t get my hopes up too high. I do hope we get him though. One interesting thing is that there are mock drafts that have the Jazz taking Knight and Jimmer. I initially ruled it out, but if Knight starts at SG and Hayward moves to SF, then Jimmer could be the backup PG and it just might work. I thought Denver played some good basketball with their two PG lineup, and the Jazz would essentially be doing the same thing with a Harris-Knight back court. I wouldn’t bet on it happening but I suppose there’s a chance. So if we get Knight at #3 the Jimmer fans can maybe hold onto a jimmer of hope. All in the name of best player available.
TJ- What would you do if the Jazz do draft Jimmer? Will you still hate him? Most posts on this board are opinion. Hers was reporting. You chose a bad blog to label as biased.
Nobody was bragging TJ, you wanted to know if a BYU player can succeed in the league. Ainge matched Jimmer in two criteria, BYU player and NPOY. There aren’t many NPOY college guys from big programs that are busts. So it is actually very likely that Jimmer is successful in the NBA.
And you’re right TJ, Duke is obviously one of the best programs in the country. They are better than BYU and us BYU fans accept that. Believe me, if Kyrie is still on the board we’ll want the Jazz to draft him over Jimmer.
How many BYU friends do you have on speed dial there Diana?
We’re Jazz fans, on here all the time. This isn’t a battle of who can come up with the best comeback like you’ll find on the comment sections of the trib. You may find that to be more your kind of forum, even though it is a bit more biased on those comment sections than Diana is in her reporting. But over there it is standard procedure to say things for the sole purpose of getting under other people’s skin. SO I think you’d find it to be a great fit. We’re all Jazz fans so we all try to get along and usually do despite our differing opinions, so we aren’t accustomed to our fellow fans trying to be irritating.
Yo Hoo Moderator.. TJ- alias alban,Jazz Fan,or the shirt guy nees some attention.
What kind of forum is this where you can’t give your opinion? Are we controlled by BYU’s honor code office? Calm down people. You just prove how sensitive ya’ll are. Who cares what I think???? Apparently you all do!! I don’t like Jimmer’s game and I thought this article felt like a 3rd Grade book report and expressed my feelings. WHO CARES??? But thanks for the entertainment today.
@TJ: I’d get on my knees for Jimmer any day :p
Why u mad tho TJ?
TJ it’s one thing to post your opinion of Jimmer. It’s entirely different when you start disrespecting a fan-blogger. Most of us are not sensitive over Jimmer, or BYU, or whatever. But we are sensitive about being a complete @$$ to someone a lot of us have a friendship with. So that’s the sensitivity. It’s your tone: not your content. (Although I do have beef with your contrived content because your anti-Jimmer comments were as one sided as you claimed Diane’s post to be.)
But hold on, it gets even more ironic! You criticize Diane’s post, but then you complain (i.e., get sensitive) when people do to you the very thing that you did to Diana in the first place!!
It’s one thing to be ant-Jimmer. But if you’re going to post your analysis of him, please spare us the tired, worn-out, “he-can’t-play-defense” 3rd-grade rationale and actually contribute something.
Go Kentucky!!! (A program that’s won more than Duke…)
Boozer is from Duke..
Glad I live in Jersey. Forgot how sensitive ya’ll are in Utah. Well, we know one thing. The only way that people will read her articles is for me to comment on them. Any publicity is good publicity right? You are welcome Diane. (more of a knock on your followers)
“D-U-K-E, Who the F%*K you come to see?”
@TJ “Go Duke! A real college program!”
I see, so you choose one of the best teams to be a fan of so you can say stuff like this, to talk down to others, as if you being a frontrunner makes you cooler and better than everyone else. Classic bandwagoning at it’s finest. Get a life. You are what’s wrong with professional sports these days. Stupid people that become fans of the best teams so they can feel good about themselves. I bet you want Miami to beat Dallas. You’re probably a Packers, SF Giants, and Auburn fan too. Man you’re so cool for liking all the best teams.
For the record… I can’t stand BYU, I’m not a Jimmer fan, and I’m not on Diana’s speed dial. I just can’t stand bandwagon tools like you even more
no, TJ, we’re all just waiting for you to stop talking $#*t and actually say something. but everything i’ve read from you leads me to believe that you don’t have it in you. and then i found out that you live in jersey and it all just started making sense…
As a Duke fan, I apologize for TJ. We’re not all like him.
And TJ, most of us read Diana’s posts regardless of whether you comment or not. She’s written some great stuff on here. If you don’t like the article, fine, say so. Leave the personal attacks out of it, and then move along and find an article you do like. Or better yet, try writing something other people actually care to read, like Diana does.
T.J. is really Alban, he is only doing this to draw attention, he really likes Jimmer but is doing this to get on your nerves! Alban cut the crap man! Told you not to F around on here! some people really like Jimmer including me! cut out the sh*t! (Diana love your post and I love Jimmer!)
Jules: Do you know what they call a Quarter Pounder with cheese in France?
Brett: No.
Jules: Tell him, Vincent.
Vincent: Royale with cheese.
Jules: Royale with cheese. Do you know why they call it a Royale with cheese?
Brett: Because of the metric system?
Jules: Check out the big brain on Brett. You one smart motherfu&ker!
Epic!
TJ, you’re obnoxious.
I haven’t posted on here in 6 months, but I’ve come back just let you know that.
Great article Diana.
tj i dopost biased blogs. I am a proud byu fan. I love Jimmer and would be very happy if he went to the jazz. But it makes no sense to ake rude “jokes” about a good post. Diana has almost all facts in her posts so why should you be rude to everyone who defends her from you. I think that if Jimmer was from Duke you would not have said anything rude.
Alright, name the lyrics…
We’re no strangers to love
You know the rules and so do I
A full commitment’s what I’m thinking of
You wouldn’t get this from any other guy
I just wanna tell you how I’m feeling
Gotta make you understand
Never….
someone finish the song….
So wait, everyone got all huffy over Jimmer and now TJ is singing lyrics to some random song?
What happened over here?
I happened.
Never gonna give you up,
Never gonna let you down,
Never gonna run around and desert you.
Never gonna make you cry,
Never gonna say goodbye,
Never gonna tell a lie and hurt you.
Great moustache JC!
(gyrating pelvic thrusts)
****crickets****
TJ fail…
TJ’s boyfriend gave him drugs after beating him. He’d had enough if TJ’s lip and decided to smack him to the ground. The result? TJ comes onto a public blog to belittle other people so he can feel better. TJ, the real solution is to leave your boyfriend and start a new life. This time, try girls.
“The difference between the right word and the nearly right word is the difference between lightning and lightning bug.”
@Ben Thank you! Im glad someone agrees with me. I appreciate the support and the encouragement. Who do you like in the draft? I like Kemba.
@Kevin I liked girls when I was younger. I have now moved on to women.
Enjoy your evening folks. (more gyrating pelvic thrusts with…. wait for it…. wait for it….wait for it…. FIST PUMPS!!!!!!!!!)
…What?
Dear Jazz Fans,
This site was designed as a place for all people to freely share their thoughts and opinions. There is however, a difference between etiquette and following the rules for this site which are: no swearing or politically incorrect slurs. Be aware some of our passionate fans can cause controversy. If you feel a comment or blog post crosses the lines or breaks any rule, please flag it. We take flagged posts very seriously. Thank you and GO JAZZ!
What? Kevin just gets a slap in the wrist for being homophobic? And for those who are questioning my ‘get off your knees’ comment, it was meant to quit worshiping or praying to Jimmer like he’s a God. Get your heads out of the gutter!
(gyrating pelvic thrusts)
@Utah Jazz: And just how do you “Flag” comments. This guy is pure nonsense and is a slap in the face for the poster. Most moderators would remove the post right away. However you Flag something plese flag this on thank you..
Yeah we need to know how to flag something in order to flag it. I would flag it right away if I knew how. Instead, I resort to turning the table on the people who illogically try to annoy others. some call it stooping to their level, I call it entertaining.
@Kevin: At least you have a brain. Also to Utah Jazz person we could use a Edit button and please spell check so we can dismiss the grammar police..
The Jazz will take Jimmer if possible. Everyone in Provo will buy a season ticket. It’s about money and he is a very good player.
