Would You Want Him?

The author's views are entirely his or her own and may not reflect the views of the Utah Jazz.

Our Center position is weak. We have Al Jefferson (who really is a 4) an injured Memo and a qualifying offer yet to be signed by Fesenko.

We’ve discussed the rumors about Elson working out for and interested in signing with the Jazz.   There are not many bigs left in free agency really worth looking at so what about bring back a familiar face?

Jarron is a swell guy. He is a good locker room presence and he’s always got his teammate’s back.

Jarron knows the Jazz system and gets along with Coach Sloan due to his toughness and hard work.

Jarron is willing to take that charge and not go outside of the offense (as if he could)

Most of all if Jarron is sick his twin brother Jason can take his place no questions asked.

And don’t forget Jarron is fun at Christmas Parties.

So Jazz fans do you want a hardworking already knows the system near 7 ft player but with limited talent?

  1. You forgot he is the head cheer leader while on bench!

  2. Tyler says:

maybe if he played for free

  3. Kelton says:

    Vet minnimum. I’m down.

  4. Deb says:

Great pictures and video Diana, I am torn on this one, Jarron did play for the Jazz for a long time and obviously knows the system. I never remember him doing great things, but then I don’t remeber him messing up very often either. Last year when he wasn’t offered a contract by the Jazz, we had both Koof ans Fesenko whom the Jazz had hope for. This year Koof is gone and who knows about Fes. Does anyone remember if Ostertag was at all helpful when he came back for one more year after playing elsewhere?

  5. Diana says:

It is hard to decide about him. I do think if we are just going for a guy for vet minimum to warm the bench maybe play 4-5 minutes I think Jarron is our guy.
I do hope Fes signs his contract. He showed some real potential against Denver. I’d like him to back up Jefferson and Memo.
Deb- I don’t think Ostertag really did anything when he came back. More of a cheerleader. Which Collins is great at doing!

  6. Franco says:

I like Collins. He’s a cultured guy, plays hard, but has very limited skill. The truth is if Fes is resigned, Big Al, Memo and Fes should fill the rotation. So Jaron’s locker room presence would be the most important thing, and I think he does bring that. Of course, Fes is not good enough and neither is Jaron, so any injuries for Memo or Big Al would be huge against the Jazz. I really have no idea what I think O’Connor should do for this one.

  7. Kalab says:

I would have to say NO! Did any of you really miss him last year? I sure as heck didnt. Took me quite awhile to realize he wasnt there.

  8. lou says:

Haha, he is a swell guy!

I didn’t like Jarron at first, then I paid a bit more attention. The key to Jarron is this:

“Jarron is willing to take that charge and not go outside of the offense (as if he could)”

More specifically with Jarron, you know exactly what you will get, every time. Jarron is probably the most consistent player I have ever seen. He will play the same game, offense and defense, no matter the opponent. He will always get in and scrap and fight, push and shove, take up space and keep others out.

So yeah, he isn’t very good if you want a scorer, an intimidating presence, or someone to require opponents to double. If you want someone to get in and wear down the opponents more in his 4-5 minutes than Boozer would do in an entire game, then Jarron is your guy.

Seriously, I don’t know if he is the right fit for what the team needs, but he is at least an interesting option. I wouldn’t know immediately what to do if I had to make that decision.

  9. benny says:

Of course they should bring back Jarron. He is my favorite player to ever grace a Jazz uniform because he isn’t the most talented but he plays hard and doesn’t complain. his 6 fouls would be exactly what the jazz need. Come on KOC, get it done!

  10. Jazz Fan says:

This is the worst post I have ever seen in my life :( Why does everybody keep talking about how swell and nice of a guy Jarron Collins is? is that what playing basketball is all about? do we bring players to the team just because they are nice? NOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!! We bring players to the team to win damn basketball games that actually know how to play the game! Did all of you people forget how !@#$% of a player Jarron was??? There is a reason why he got traded! Jarron Collins SUCKS and was a waste of space! Sloan never played him EVER! The fact that you even posted this makes me sick to my stomach, and not to be rude, it shows how little you know about basketball…. THAT HIGHLIGHT VIDEO OF JARRON IS ALL HIS SHOTS THROUGHOUT HIS WHOLE CAREER COMBINED HAHAHAHA IF YOU ALL WANT THE JAZZ TO SUCK THEN GO AHEAD BRING HIM BACK! GO LOOK UP JARRON COLLINS STATS & DO YOUR HOMEWORK, SCRATCH YOUR HEAD, THEN DELETE THIS RIDICULOUS POST! HAHAHAHAHHA JARRON COLLINS HAHAHA ARE YOU FREAKING NUTS??? HAHAHAH

  11. TACOREV says:

I was overjoyed when we didn’t re-sign Collins and I definitely don’t want him back now… and not even that 37-second “highlight” reel can get me to change my mind

  12. Adam says:

He’d be better than what we have at backup center position, which is… oh yes, NOTHING!! I’d take him over Fes, but I’d still like to look elsewhere first and use the Collins brothers as a last resort. If it comes down to signing a summer league/D-League guy or either of the Collins, I’d take the Collins.

  13. Diana says:

@Jazzfan- where in my post did I say I want Jarron Collins?

  14. Diana says:

@jazzfan- also Jarron never got traded he just wasn’t resigned.

  15. Jazzaholic says:

    NO!!!
Fes if the Jazz can sign him.
If not, get someone young and see if he can develop.

  16. Troy says:

Watch to the end of the interview and you will get Deron’s thoughts on the matter. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ivdYwy7hPvM

  17. Dave801 says:

No, ma’am. Have you forgot his middle name is unproductive. All Jarron ever had to offer was 5 fouls. I’m on the fence with Fesenko, we hear a lot about potential but what we saw in the play-offs was Big Fes simply holding his ground, which was impressive enough because it was Fes. Your right about needing to fortify the center position, if the Jazz had one true center Fesenko would suffice. All the hype on Tomic is exciting but lets hope his game translates.

  18. Adam says:

    Collins is better than Fes

  19. Joseph says:

Weak at the C position? Seriously? I can think of about 20 other teams that are worse off at the C than we are. I don’t care if Big Al is 2″ undersized. He will play the C for us for years to come.
As for Collins, I don’t hate thy guy, but the only thing he ever did for us was !@#$% the other team off. I loved it when he got Duncan all riled up, but thats all he did in his 2.000001 min per game. I say no. I would much rather work with Fes.

  20. Dave801 says:

Yeah, seriously… the teams with better Centers are the teams to beat.

  21. Colby says:

Jaron Collins sucks. Plain and simple and D-will hates him.
Unfortunately we have to cater to our all-stars wishes. Bring collins back would just make D-will mad.

I would seriously be happy signing D.J Mbenga. Watch him with long, solid playing time. He is solid.

besides I really don’t see Big Al playing PF. He has played the 5 his whole life, he said so himself. That gives us three centers. Milsap,Big Al and Milsap on the floor all at once.

Let’s focus on another power forward while throwing A.K into the rotation. Amundson would be my first pick

  22. Adam says:

@Joseph- The reason we are weak at the Center position is not because of the talent at the starting position, but rather the lack of depth. Big Al will play good at center, but will be even better at Power Forward. Memo is hurt. Fes is terrible and currently is still a free agent in September which says a lot about him. So yeah, we have zero depth at the position, which is a bad problem.

  23. Jazz Fan says:

Diana, after reviewing the post, I would like to give you an apology for the fact that it actually makes picking up Collins look like a joke, so I’m sorry k :) but please don’t give anybody the idea of picking up a scrub like Collins hahahha YOUR GREAT AT WHAT YOU DO!!! MUCH LOVE

  24. Diana says:

Jazz Fan- thanks for the apology and thanks for the compliments.

  25. Vince Beaver says:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ivdYwy7hPvM

I would say heck NOOO! He was always way to soft. Watch this video, and see D Will call him the most unathletic player he’s played with.

  26. Diana says:

i remember laughing so hard when I first saw that harpring-Williams interview.

  27. Diana–thanks for the Jarron post. I would have to say pass on another Collins era. The Jazz do need another big, even if/when Fes returns. Perhaps another veteran or a young guy with some semblence of potential.

Love the highlight video :) !

  28. Chris says:

I would strongly prefer having Francisco Elson to re-signing Karen Collins. Obviously, it would be more desirable to have Fes as a backup big man than either of them; Kyrylo is skilled, mobile, and acceptably quick, has a reasonable touch, and an extra offseason of NBA-level training has to have done more for him than it would for most players. Elson isn’t as strong as Collins, but he’s more aggressive, so he’ll draw some contact on the offensive end and manage a few points from the stripe as well as an occasional made jumper. On defense, he’s longer and quicker, and more mindful of his role, so he’ll be a bit dirty, maybe foul when he’s beat, to try and hold down the damage and elongate the clock. Collins is scrappy and strong enough to hold his ground, but he’s always been a step slow and lacks some self-awareness to attune to his weakness. Give me Elson anyday.

  29. Ben Hoeksel says:

I agree with Chris. I actually don’t mind Elson at all. He CERTAINLY brings more than Collins. What I don’t get is the fascination with Lou Amudsen from a lot of fans. (I’m sure I spelled his last name wrong). To me, he brings nothing. I would absolutely rather the Jazz bring in “Robin Lopez Lite” Augustine from our summer league squad.

Enjoyed the Jarron highlights though!!! Good ol’ Jarron! Wish him best of luck….just not in a Jazz uni.

  30. Al is good in the sense that he can paly both positions, he isn’t a true power forward and, not a true center. He can’t spend the court like a power forward can but he plays a lot bigger then a power forward like a center does.I’m excited about the bigs position for the fact that we have him down there. He knows a thing or two about defence so that’s always a good thing and I hope Fez see’s some more playing time because not only will it allow Al to dominate the post but, i think the kid has a lot of potential. As far as bringing Collins back I don’t like it one bit ever since he hurt his knee he can’t play like he had the potential to play so if you are going to go out and get anther big man shop around a bit more maybe bring Rafel back who play for BYU I think he played better then collins did.
