Developing our young players

In any sport, the development of young players is one of the most important aspects of the game. I know that it is a shortened season, very little opportunity to practice etc etc.  The question I would like to know the answer to is ‘Are there any members of the Jazz coaching staff who have the necessary experience in growing young players?’ It is a special skill and the lack of game time given to some of the Jazz youngsters, particularly in situations where the entrenched players aren’t performing, makes me question whether the Jazz coaching staff have the necessary skills to bring the players through to their full potential.

Can anyone answer this for me? If the situation is as it seems to me, what should we do about it?

Sloan never played rookies. Even D-Will rode the pine behind Keith McLeod. Corbin was Sloan’s assistant, so we’ll see.

In my opinion, its not looking good so far.

Evans is super efficient every time he’s on the court, brings energy, alley oops and swats, yet he is getting no time. Meanwhile Millsap’s been in a slump for ten games…

Burks is a spark and can get to the rim AND the foul line. He had like 10 free-throws in 9 minutes of play while the entire Jazz team had a combined six attempts for the whole game. He’s also shown good distribution skills. Meanwhile CJ continues to Jack up ill-advised shots and commit boneheaded fouls, Howard lost his groove, and Harris gets like four assists and 8 points a night.

Now I’m no expert (that was for you, LK), but I’d say Corbin isn’t smart on his rotations. If he keeps trotting out players who are playing crappy, what motivation do they have to play better? And for that matter how do Burks and Evans respond to their good play being ‘rewarded’ with a ride on the pine for long stretches of the season.

And finally, my biggest complaint with Corbin is that when stuff isn’t working, he keeps trotting out the SAME damn thing. Try something NEW, Corbin!

  2. Sorry I disagree kc corbin lost three games right in a row so the last two games he switched up. Its no longer just the starters playing at once and the bench at once. Favor has been coming in with al or sap, hayward is starting and playing with the bench as well and, howard has been playing with both as well. So he has mix it up a lot over the last two games. He is also getting more production from his players by doing this as well.
he has gotton a lot more out of hayward and, bell. Burks has played more the last two games also. I think he has no choice but, to keep playing him he has shown to much to throw him on the bench all the time anymore. Simple answer for evens we have two many bigs plain and, simple. Yes he comes in and is very productive but, who’s minutes do you give him. Saps, favors or, even if you tryed him at sf who do you sit haward, cj or, howard. If you want to see evans you need to make a trade plain and simple.
it doesn’t matter how efficient he is he does compare to the players that play in front of him yet. I think he can and, will get to the point where he will be but, not now. Which is why we need to make a trade for a pg or sg. I agree evans needs more time but, you can’t play himright now until you trade or, someone leaves in free agency in front of him. That’s part of the reason im ok with trading sap. Evans will get more minutes it will only be between 5 and 10 a game but, it will be something until he improves more.
As for developing realationships players I think corbin is doing fine. We were all excited when he came in on one thing that are youngsters. Will play more and, I think he plays them more in a sense but, he stil has Sloans way of thinking to. They are rookies they haven’t proven themselfs yet which I agree with in a sense. Look at hayward though I know there isn’t to much talent in his position but, if sloan was here you would see cj or howard starting. Corbin has hayward starting though and you see what its doing for his development. Favors gets more time as he performsas well. Last nights games he played 30 minutes most of the reason for that was because his performance.
Last but, not least give the coaching staff a chance the jazz as an organization have always gotten the most out of low level players players that all the other teams past on. We are in a diffrent situation with now we have a bunch of players that were drafted very high and, that a bunch of teams want and, who have very high ceilings. The staff and organization will get the most out of these guys like they did with 90 percent of the other players the jazz drafted.

You can disagree all you want. Did you watch the game? Millsap looked disinterested last night, had 5 points and 4 rebounds in 22 minutes as well as a +/- of -16. He DISAPPEARED! Yeah, he’s had great games. Last night was not one of them. Is he sulking for not making the All-Star game? I don’t know what it is, but something’s going on with him.

It’s the coach’s job to find guys who produce on the court, and I’m disappointed Corbin didn’t at least TRY to find some more production. Also, has he not taught this team any plays against a zone? Or is ‘CJ chucks a three’ the play, cuz that’s what they seemed to be running.

I do applaud him for using Burks, but Burks should have seen more time and sooner in the game (like before we’re down 20 points to the worst team in the league that’s missing three of their main players). Alec Burks shot 10 free throws in his 14 minutes. The other 10 players in their combined 226 minutes? 8 Free throws! 8! In 226 minutes! Burks: 10 Free throws in 14 minutes! He had a +/- of +11. Should CJ (1-8 from the field, -14) and Howard (-14) have gotten a combined 30 minutes? NO. That’s my beef with Corbin right now. Don’t keep playing guys that aren’t producing when there are guys getting less minutes who ARE.

  4. KCJones says:

I lied it was 13 free throws by the rest of the team in 226 minutes, not 8. Still not good.

  5. At least he gave him time if sloan was still here he wouldn’t have seen half those minutes. They would have brought it back to being down by 7 or 8jefferson and the starters would have came back out. Anyways I think we are all in agreements some thing needs to change player wise. Three or four players need to get packing harris, miles, milsap, and, I would say either bell or howard. I like bell and howard but, it was a mistake to sign bell last year. We need a bigger scoring threat from that position instead of a defensive threat minded type. Howard I wouldn’t want to trade him but, ever since he got hurt his shot hasn’t been there at all so I don’t know what to do but changes need to happen soon before the deadline

  6. Zach says:

We shouldn’t trade Bell. He’s the only one that can buy a basket on the whole team right now, at least from 3. Harris, Howard, and yes even Millsap need to go to change the mentality of this team and bring back some mental toughness. Just getting rid of them might be a plus right now, but it’d be nice if we could add the right piece to the puzzle in the process.

@ Trevor – It was more of a question about their experience developing players as I am not familiar with the assistant coaches history. Minutes arent the only way to develop players.
