My foreseen core 10 starters and backups

Posted by: Ryan Tegtmeier on October 3rd, 2012

The author's views are entirely his or her own and may not reflect the views of the Utah Jazz.

Point Guards starter/backup: Mo Williams/Randy Foye
Shooting Guards starter/backup: Gordon Hayward/Alec Burks
Small Forwards starter/backup: Millsap/Marvin Williams
Power Forwards starter/backup: Al Jefferson/Derek Favors
Centers starter/backup: Enes Kanter/power forward starter or power forward backup (I believe that it could go either way and they can’t go wrong)

The 2-4 starter positions tend to be extra tall for their positions, which is a plus. I believe that all 10 can play interchangeable roles at their respective positions.  Additionally, I think that Jamaal Tinsley at the 1, Kevin Murphy at the 2 or 3, and Demarre Carroll at the 3 or 4 should round out the top 3 positions, if needed.  We should only need 12 players on the roster, which would save some payroll space and give other players more playing time.  I would choose Murphy and Tinsley as the last two roster spots.  Each one of those 3 mentioned, though, should be good 3rd-stringers in the case of an injury or a player who isn’t playing well in a game.  Please give me your thoughts.

I would wait until after training camp and pre season games then deciede who has earned starting roles and also who has earned spport roles. How can you pick a line up when you haven”t seen them play and find out who is there to play and who has just shown up.

I completely understand your excitement Ryan, I’m right there with ya. I think generally speaking you’ve got it fairly accurate, with the exception of a few things. Al Jeff will be our Center, Kanter just isn’t ready and there will be a lot of players playing multiple positions. Mo, Foye, Alec, Gordon, Sap will all get significant minutes at at least two spots. Good post though. I’ve heard tremendous things about Alec, apparently players and coaches are really impressed, he could break out if he can earn it first.

Also I’d like to add that Marvin Williams could really accel in our system. He has the talent as a Sr. in High School he was a Mcdonalds All-American that averaged 28ppg 15 rebs, 5 blks and 5 assts. The Hawks had an isolatoin, movementless offense. He’s going to be a stud for us.

  4. @ Chase: I understand what you are getting at and I agree. I was mainly just showing who I think will be starters most often and who would come off the bench early in the game. The team has many tweeners and of course this starting lineup will not be the same way in every game; matchups are important to look at and who’s playing well will deserve the starting job, regardless of how much the player is making on the payroll. I would like to see Kanter be the starting center if he shows that he has earned it; I believe that Corbin should look at him as an option based on, like every position, how the other players are playing. What we are looking at is how deep this team is and how having all of these options is a wonderful problem to have. We win no matter who goes on the floor, most of the time. I’m worried about the Jazz’s defense, though. That will have to separate them from the other teams if they are going to go deep into the playoffs. also @Chase: I am all about Alec Burks getting some starter minutes if he is showing that he has it going good. It almost doesn’t matter a lot who starts, somewhat, because the team has so many good players. I think one difference will be Corbin getting his young guys (1st-3rd year players) some playing minutes at the start of the season to see if they will deserve a starting spot. With many tweeners, and as you pointed out there are, many of the players who don’t start the game are going to closely approach starter minutes anyway. I’m really excited about Marvin as well. He should fit in very well. Thanks for your comments, guys.

  5. I was predicting which players will be the starters most often towards the end of the season, is what I meant. I realized by your comment, though, Chase, that who starts at the end of the season won’t make a significant difference on the impact of the game, because many of them will be playing starter-type minutes. They’ll be that deep, just like you said about the tweeners getting significant minutes every game.

  6. sorry guys, one more point. My starting 5 was put in there to defend the teams with tall players. My starting lineup’s positions 1-4 are tall for their positions, giving them an advantage. Tell me if I’m wrong, it tends to be a necessity that Al is taller than the player that he is defending because his height advantage is helping him to guard properly. At the center position, he is average on defense and can’t post an intimidation factor on the centers because he doesn’t jump as high. He has a harder time blocking centers and should play the 4 a lot this year because we are so versatile at each position. He will be a good center, too, don’t get me wrong. If Kanter doesn’t play very well, Al can play center and Favors can play more minutes at the 4. My brother thinks that Favors should play center some of the time. I’m not sure about how he would do as a center.

  7. In a few years we will be hoping that Favors wants to resign with the Jazz. We will have ZERO chance of that if we keep him on the bench. I don’t care if Jefferson or Millsap get one minute this season, they are not the future of the Jazz, and are frankly not as good as Favors right now. I want Favors to start.

  8. Very very good point Jared

Word is Jamaal Tinsley’s impressed, and his court vision is great, and he’s most like a ‘true’ distributing PG. Might be the guy to run the P&R with Favors rather than Mo/Foye?
