The author's views are entirely his or her own and may not reflect the views of the Utah Jazz.He would be a good piece to bring in to be a back up or something around that and he does not have a steep contract it is 8 MILL but he is proving him self he is averaging 15 pts 15 rbnds 3 assists 1.7 steals he could be a good addition or a piece to pick up and then use as a trade piece this summer or begining of next year a lot of team want him

We would have to give up a lot to get him. I would love him but not sure it is worth it when we all ready have two bigs who need more time and we are not giving it to them
All those Al Jefferson bashers on this site should really listen to David Locke’s tipoff today on December 3rd. I couldn’t agree more with this overall analysis. It probably won’t change any opinions you have, but it is definitely some food for thought.
*his*…not “this”…
What is wrong with us as Jazz fans? A few years back we all hated jokers like Varejao and now everyone keeps talking about getting these players. This tool is a hall of fame flopper who has zero respect for the game. I hope we NEVER get him. I hope we never even TRY to get him.
@Jason It is funny because he talks about the narrative that people do not like Al so we see things. But he is the leader right? So the team takes on the ways of the leader? So if Al plays that way the team is going to play that way? Kinda like how Duncan plays hard so do the Spurs?
Also he talks about not following the narrative but when he is calling he game he admitted he misses a lot of things cause he will be looking at notes and what not. Like when he blamed Favors a few games ago against Denver for not hedging correctly on Lawson which allowed him into the lane. It was actually Al. I went and re watched it on synergy.
Do other players deserve blame heck yes they do. I have not seen anyone say otherwise. Paul has struggled,Foye,Mo,Earl,Jamaal all have struggled on defense. So I have not once said that it is all on him. But like I said above you go where your leader goes. He is assuming the leadership role so people are playing the way that he is playing. They are playing very lack luster. And guess what? The FO allowed this to happen by allowing NINE players to come into this year in limbo. You can not have a leader when the people who are trying to be leaders are viewed as not going to be here next year
I started listening to Locke’s “Tipoff” podcast today, and after the first minute I deleted the feed entirely. Locke is so unprofessional in his podcasts, he goes off on random senseless personal interests, and his analysis is not that much better than most Jazz fans on twitter. Sure, he has more info than we have, but without that insider access I do not think he’d be THAT good.
I actually read an article on espn about varejao and it kind of sparked my interest. i have never been a varejao fan before, but i must admit, his hustle and play would be a great addition. I would love to have him on this team. He would bring exactly what everyone is asking for, defense and hustle. sure he’s a goof and somewhat of a flopper, haha, but i’ll take that if he can make 3-4 hustle plays a night.
@kevin that is exactly why i don’t put a lot into anything locke says either. Also, he see’s the “stats” and not the actual play of the players.
@dallan yes, yes, and yes, too add to your point… The reason the spurs are such a good defensive team is because of their rotations. the wing players know, without a doubt, if they get beat baseline duncan, or whoever, is going to be there. Its not the outstanding play of one player or another, but collectively they are all connected. Its a trickle effect, when one player helps, the weakside guy rotates, and they keep rotating, and play sound team defense. And its because it all starts with the leader, tim duncan.
As a team with jefferson and millsap the defensive rotations, are either late, not there, or lazy. How cool was it watching derrick favors last year in the playoffs come from the weakside and make a few great blocks!? thats the exact thing we don’t get with jefferson or millsap, we don’t even need them to block shots, we just need them to put the effort in and contest shots to make it tough. Should our wing defenders get blamed? absolutely. But we’ve played guys like Harden, Durrant, and tyreke, these guys are unstoppable 1 on 1, as most 2’s and 3’s in the NBA are. We can’t expect our guys to stop those calibur of players on their own. Defense is not individual effort, its a collective effort, and collectively its not there.
@Steve also our GM talking to Locke stated defense starts in the middle so if our GM sees that obviously the problem has to start there. It does not end there but it certainly starts there. When you look at the top 10 defensive teams in points allowed a game everyone was a big man in there paint willing and able to play solid defense. We only allow ours to play 23 mins a game..
If Evans could just put on like 10-15 pounds, that could br our Serge Ibaka in a year or so as our 3/4 big!!
Locke is essentially a Jazz employee, he is always going to tow the party line. Rather than Varejao, who is a starter on most teams, I would prefer a solid back-up, possibly a stretch 4 who can play D
disco i can see that .. i think the jazz just really need someone that can be a solid back up and play great D
Dallan you are right i think the new GM knows what the jazz need to fix but… the jazz don’t want to move him unless the deal is perfect.. its not going to happen i wish it would but not a lot of team are going to offer something great but i think the jazz are shooting for the moon with the trades.. i think they really should try and move them for a Elite level point guard so we can have 2 solid PG.. I love they way Mo is playing right now. OR get picks .. keep the team young the next 2 drafts have some very talented players coming out in all positions.
If we get anything. anything at all for the guys leaving , I would be happy.
Why would we give up guys who are leavnig (Al or Millsap) for another guy who is leaving in Varajao? You think Varajao won’t expect a contract similar if not more than what Millsap will want? Don’t we have a problem with a logjam in the fron court as it is? How the hell would adding varajao in place of Millsap or Jefferson solve that? It wouldn’t. The only reason you’d want Vrajao over Millsap is because he’s simply a better player. Well, he’s having a better year, yes, but I don’t think he’s a better player. Plus, as has been stated before, the cavs want the moon and the stars for him because, well, he’s the only guy other than Irving on their team that is worth more than a bag of chips.
Cavs over value him because any sort of talent is a rarity on that squad. Jazz shouldn’t bite on that.
@Ben
I agree. Varejao looks good because there’s no one else. If we signed a bunch of people with broken arms, Watson would look like a lethal, pure shooter. Varejao gets hustle plays, but so did Millsap before he quit and got lazy. Once players like them decide they are done fighting, you have a big clump of worthlessness.
Ben and Kevin i see what you guys are saying honestly i think varejao is doing great and he would be a good backup but i would much rather see Jeremy Evans put on some more weight and he becomes the backup for good.. i think the jazz really just need a 2nd PG that plays really good.
We need to get rid of some of are bigs not bring anther one in we need to ho for an sf or a true pg and let mo play the sg spot.
