Meet
The Point Guard
Posted by: Eric Ostler on January 16th, 2013
The author's views are entirely his or her own and may not reflect the views of the Utah Jazz. The jazz have always been a pass first point guard team and it has suited them well but with the pace of this young team and that all are willing to pass would it hurt the jazz to bring in a shoot first PG that is fast all the young guys on the jazz right now will run the court. here are a few of the names that i think could help the jazz overall – this is just my opinion on who i think could help the jazz … other then CP3
Brandon Jennings
Monta Ellis. – hes more a SG but if hes going to do 7 assists a game i am ok with that
Tyreke Evans – i think he would work with this team if given the chance
Greivis Vasquez – Pass first but a good option
Darren Collison would probably show signs of life in utah
there is always more but what do you guys think … what kind of options do they have

No to Monta and Darren, they would hurt the team (at least the way they are currently playing) more than just letting Tinsley run the show.
Everyone else would be a great piece though..
Would you really take tinsley over monta and Darren? I would take just about another pg in the league right now… Ha. But in all seriousness the jazz have a great chance to get one of milwaukee’s guards (including udrih) and a good young piece for Al or Paul.
I’m serious that I would take Jamaal over Monta, and it depends on which Collison we got.
I still think Calderon is a better fit than all of them. He has a better p&r game
I still like Kemba, and I think he’s gettable.
Here’s a trade to get him:

To get a Kemba-type player, we’d have to both give value back and probably take a bad contract back. Hence Tyrus Thomas and Diop. We’d be giving up Al, Mo, Foye and Burks and also getting Ben Gordon back, who’s a decent player. I really think with Mo as Charlotte’s captain, Al to go to in the post, and young guys MKG as their SF and Burks and Foye at SG, they could put together a winning team there in the east. We would of course have our point guard of the future, a (slightly overpaid) SG replacement for Burks, and two guys who would be benchwarmers behind Kanter-Favors-Millsap.
What do you all think? Does Charlotte say no to this? Are we giving up to much?
I’ve yet to be sold on Burks that he is going to be all that we hoped he might be, but there is still enough potential there that I think it might be to big a trade to get Kemba. Kemba is interesting and he has made some improvements to his NBA game this season but I’m not sure he is someone that can make enough of an impact that he can transform a franchise in the way that we need him to. Besides I don’t like the idea of taking 4 players from a team that is used to losing.
I created an excel spreadsheet that ranked the top 25 PG in several categories including overall efficiency / scoring / FG % / 3 PT % / assists / steals / double doubles etc. I then looked across the board to see which names repeatedly appeared in the top 10 or 15 of each category. It was no surprise to see CP3, Rondo, Westbrook, Parker, Wade and Curry, none of which are crossing their fingers they will one day play in Utah. Others I consider unattainable are Irving, D Will, Jennings, Lillard, Walker and Lawson amongst others. There were a few names however that did appear on my list midway down in each category that I feel would fit well in Utah. Vasquez, Calderon, Collison, and Holiday. At first, the only name in that group that really excites me is Holiday, maybe even Collison. Remember, they are not CP3 by any means, but they are better than Mo in most categories. I would personally prefer a quick athletic PG going forward.
In short, here is my list of my top PG prospects that I would target in an inevitable trade involving either Millsap or Jefferson…
Holiday, Bledsoe, Collison, Jack, Calderon, Vasquez, Flynn, Maynor
My picks: John Wall, Kemba Walker, Eric Bledsoe, Ty Lawson, Jrue Holiday, Tyreke Evans, and Brandon Jennings… We just desperately need a good point guard!
Derrick Fisher???
We could rescue Kemba or Wall… I think they have no problem on leave such bad teams….
I’m going to pretend like I didn’t see someone suggest Derrick Fisher, aka Satan, whether it was in seriousness or in jest.
I’m actually beginning to like the Vasquez idea. He’s young, pass first, a good fit, and will only get better.
Hopefully the Jazz go on a pretty good winning streak, and the media gives a ton of credit to Al amd Sap as being responsible (which wont be entirely true, consider the schedule and the strength of bench), I think that would be a perfect time to make a trade: we can sell it like, “hey, we are offering the starting frontcourt of the number 6 team in the West, you better offer something just as good!”
I think thats how we can get Kemba or Wall. I still love the trade I proposed earlier:
Wall and Okafor
Al, Watson, UJ pick
Al, UJ pick, GSW pick
Kemba, Thomas
Other less known names that can be relatively easier to get are Isaiah Thomas or Josh Shelby.
Your right Tacorev, I dont want to give Corbin any ideas: back court if the future: Watson at SG and Fisher at PG!
You are making Corbin drool over so much veteran-ness, Omar. Stop.
Lol, KC!!
Jerry Stackhouse, McGrady, Fisher, Eddie House….

I don’t understand wanting Tyreke evans and Monta Ellis to play PG. They are nothing but ball dominating 2 guards. Has that ever been something the jazz are about? No. People got frustrated with Devin Harris… Continue to get frustrated with Mo. So then, why bring in someone that is even more of a “me first” type of guy?
I would love to get Kemba, i think we could make it happen. I never thought Wall was possible, but he definitely is a possibility. And again, other than Flynn, i would take any of the PG’s talked about on here
Kemba Walker and John Wall are currently on the worst teams in the NBA. Offering Jefferson (a guy who can average 23 ppg. and 12 rpg. in that setting), possibly Foye (a scoring threat), and some of our future picks (picks lead to options) should be enough to pry their point guard away from them and relieve them of a dead weight contract. Al is averaging more points and rebounds than them or anyone on their team I believe, and would improve in a system entirely utilizing his skills. Also, both teams have other options at the point guard position: Charlotte has Ramon Sessions as the PG and the Wizards have relied on Jordan Crawford while John Wall was out. I think we need to strike soon, we have a spread out, easy schedule…perfect for a trade!!!

Wizards Trade:

Both of these trades offer Al Jefferson. Millsap has been playing well, I don’t know if we should trade him yet… Jefferson though, he is a must. We need to pull the trigger now to get a point guard who will gladly upgrade his team and make a positive impact now!!!
Adam, I really like your trade proposals but what do we do if we with Millsap if we acquire Okafur or Thomas in those trades?
Kory, that’s what I’m trying to figure out . . . I don’t think we can work out these trades without these high contract big men… Millsap has been playing well, but we gotta decide if we keep him or if we try and deal him… I honestly don’t know…
Millsap, Foye and Tinsley to Phoenix for Dragic and Morris???
is there anyway we could pry kyle lowry from toronto. Calderon is playing great so maybe they want to keep him instead? lowry is a great point guard who can pass and shoot
