Jazz Draft Scenarios

Posted by: Chris on June 17th, 2011

The author's views are entirely his or her own and may not reflect the views of the Utah Jazz.

With the Jazz owning the 3rd and 12th picks in next weeks draft, many Jazz fans have kept posted on all the mock drafts the internet has to offer. But every mock draft I look at has different players going to different teams, but most have the Jazz taking Brandon Knight with the 3rd pick while the 12th pick is much more varied in opinion. So I wanted to take a look at many of the Jazz draft possibilities that could happen with our picks. But first a quick evaluation of our current team and it’s needs:

  • PG: Devin Harris- Is Harris our long-term replacement to D-Will? Also, we don’t have any backup point guards currently under contract.
  • SG: Raja Bell- Had an extremely disappointing season. CJ Miles- Extremely streaky. Do we pick up his option and keep him around next year?
  • SF: AK47- Do we resign him? Gordon Hayward- Has said he likes playing more on the perimeter. Finished the season really strong.
  • PF: Paul Millsap- Never takes a play off. He may play some 3 next year. Is he the odd man out of a clogged front court? Derrick Favors- The centerpiece of the D-Will trade. Tons of upside. Needs minutes to develop. Jeremy Evans- Early-oop machine. Fan favorite. He also needs minutes to develop.
  • C: Al Jefferson- He has some of the best post moves in the league. He struggled to fit into Jerry Sloan’s system, but now will Ty Corbin change the system to make Jefferson feel more comfortable? Or is Jefferson another trade possibility? Memo Okur- Will he be able to come back from his injuries? If so, can the Jazz find playing time for him, Jefferson, Millsap, Favors and Evans? Big Fes- Big body…….ummm…..what else does he do? Oh yeah, he’s funny. He’s also not under contract for next season. Do we resign him?

So, in my assessment, it seems we need a point guard for sure (at least to back up Harris this year), we need a wing player (preferably one that can defend and/or hit 3’s), and it seems we do not need another big man to clog our front court.

So, what might happen come draft night? I won’t do in depth evaluations of all prospects, but I’ll just list what could happen. Let’s go through some possibilities:

  1. #3- Brandon Knight. Irving and Williams go 1 and 2 and the Jazz decide Knight is the best PG prospect left in the draft. #12- Chris Singleton. He’s considered to be the best perimeter defender in the draft, something the Jazz could use.
  2. #3- Brandon Knight. Once again. Same scenario. #12- Klay Thompson. A great shooter (also something the Jazz could use). Is said to be “NBA ready”.
  3. #3- Brandon Knight. —– #12- Alec Burks. Considered to be a great athlete that can’t shoot. Sounds kind of like a Ronnie Brewer.
  4. #3- Enes Kanter. Kevin O’Connor has said that he drafts by talent rather than by need. Is Kanter too good to pass up? #12- Jimmer Fredette. And the ESA draft party crowd goes wild! Seriously, he can shoot the lights out and this just seems to be a match made in heaven.
  5. #3- Enes Kanter. —– #12- Chris Singleton
  6. #3- Enes Kanter. —– #12- Klay Thompson
  7. #3- Enes Kanter. —– #12- Alec Burks
  8. #3- Kemba Walker. The Jazz decide that Walker is the better prospect than Knight much like when the Jazz drafted D-Will over Chris Paul. #12- Chris Singleton
  9. #3- Kemba Walker. —– #12- Klay Thompson
  10. #3- Kemba Walker. —– #12- Alec Burks
  11. #3- Derrick Williams. The T-Wolves decide they like Kanter better and that leaves Williams to fall into the Jazz’s lap. Now Jazz fans hope he picks to wear #8 so they can still use their D-Will jerseys. #12- Jimmer Fredette. Many Jazz fans dream scenario.
  12. #3- Derrick Williams. —– #12- ????. Let’s say the Jimmer already got picked. Do the Jazz draft another wing player (assuming Williams will play the 3)? Or do they trade the pick because there aren’t many other PG’s at this stage in the draft?
  13. #3- Kyrie Irving. The Cavaliers decide they can get Williams with the 1st pick and still pick up a capable PG at the 4th pick in Knight or Walker. Also the T-Wolves are coming to an agreement with Ricky Rubio to finally come over meaning they don’t need another PG which means Irving is left to the Jazz. #12- Chris Singleton
  14. #3- Kyrie Irving. —– #12- Klay Thompson
  15. #3- Kyrie Irving. —– #12- Alec Burks
  16. #3- Jan Vesely. He is said to be comparable to Andrei Kirilenko. Could he be his replacement? #12- Jimmer Fredette.
  17. #3- Jan Vesely. —– #12- ????. Same situation as Williams. If Fredette isn’t available, what do we do with the pick?
  18. #3- Traded to Philadelphia for Andre Iguodala. ESPN’s Chad Ford said that Philadelphia really likes Kanter and would be willing to trade up and he also said Iguodala would be available. I personally love Iguodala. He’s like a mini-LeBron James. #12- Jimmer Fredette
  19. It’s been reported that the Jazz are open for trades, but it would take me like a bagillion years to write all of the trade possibilities. So will we trade both picks for some potential all-star? Probably not. But who know’s.

So, which scenario would you like to see go down on draft night? Or if your scenario isn’t listed, what would it be?

Nice breakdown… since you mentioned trades, I thought I’d throw this out there: http://goo.gl/hjNEj

It doesn’t look like a reliable source at all as far as I’m concerned, but I thought I’d mention it

  2. TACOREV says:

Wait never mind, I found another site talking about it too… http://goo.gl/ZlJhZ

It may be more legit than I originally assumed.

  3. Woody Palmer says:

Sad to see milsap go but i would be really curious to hear some of the offers made…. for harris I still like miller and batum… then we could go for one of the euro bigs at 12. I dont know.. i just want the season to start.

  4. Woody Palmer says:

sorry chris, as far as draft combos, if nothing on the roster changes I say Knight and Singleton

  5. Patrick says:

Lets add a few you may have overlooked.
    20. #3? 12th Biyombo. Could be a good match up. Al and Favors starting with Biyombo and Millsap off the bench. Up your defense, while keeping the scoring.

Trade the 3rd down to the Wizards for 6th and 18th. Keep the 12th, and draft 3 guys.

    21. #6 Leonard – #12 K Thompson – #18 T Harris Leonard is the top SF in the draft, solid defensively, good scorer. Harris, has similar numbers to Williams freshman yr and is a hard worker. I find if funny how he is lised 9th – 18th in everyones top 100, but supposed to draft in the 20’s. Sleeper?

    22. #6 Kanter – #12 Burks – #18 Jackson Needing a PG, Jackson would be a solid backup.

    23. #6 Walker – #12 Singleton – #18 Hamilton Hamilton may be another sleeper. K Thompson has slid past him, but they are interchangeable and Hamilton plays both SF/SG. Walker is another solid will eventually start somewhere PG.

    24. #6 Valanciunas – #12 Biyombo – #18 Vucivic Valanciunas, look at other film from him. Locke must have gotten some bad ones, he is better than we thought. Still needs to clear up contract issues prior to draft. Vucivic has climbed, we could use a back up Center better than Fes or Elson. Biyombo, could fill in as a defensive stopper we dont have in the paint. Dallas did the same thing, Marion in for defense, Nowitski in for offense. But as described above, Al and Favors starting, Biyombo and Millsap off the bench could be tough for other teams to match.

    25. #6 Vesely -#12 Fredette – #18 Brooks Vesely needs to get his contract worked out too. I am not impressed by him, but others are. Brooks is a SG that can score. He has slid up the draft so another kid worth watching.

Any of the above combinations could be seen if we were to drop down. The question would be, do we have enough money to fill a roster, this could be a cheaper way of filling it? Are Kanter, Williams, and or Knight that much better than 2 picks at the same cost as the 3 pick would have been? You would have to pair up the 6th and 18th picks and decide for yourselves. It does have its possibilites though.

Possible trade downs would be with the Cavs 3rd and Bell for 4th and Sessions. Or Raptors Derozen and 5th for 3rd and Miles, depending upon how bad they wanted Knight. Kings 3rd, Bell, and Miles for Tyreke Evans and 7th if they were high on Kanter or Williams.

Have fun with it. We have no control, let us know who you want.

  6. Patrick says:

Wow, there ya go. Millsap and Miles to the Cavs for the 4th Pick, Sessions, and the big Trade Exception. Cavs do it because Millsap is better than anyone on their team, and Miles could be the SF that they have been looking for. He scored 12 ppg in only 25 mins, they are looking for someone who could score 20 a night at the SF. Miles, Irving, Millsap would add a new depth to their team.

Harris and Bell to Portland for Mathews, Batum, and Babbitt.

Makes us quite young. would leave us with Sessions, Mathews/Hayward, Batum/Babbitt/, Favors/Evans, Al/Okur 3rd pick, 4th pick, 12th pick, and a trade exception. Worth it? Well the trade exception allows you to either dump Okur, or bring another big contract in. without hurting us this season. The picks could run any amount of ways from above. You decide.

  7. Dave801 says:

If the Jazz trade Paul Millsap it just might do me in… I’d probably follow him.

  8. Patrick says:

Its crazy to think that if Millsap, Bell, Miles, and Okur are all traded off, and AK isnt resigned to think no one will be over a yr old. I sure hope Favors, Al, and Hayward has gained a following, because it could be a whole new team..

  9. Woody Palmer says:

thats is a young team… i would think that cleveland would want more than Paul and cj for the 4th.

  10. Gerald says:

Patrick, that would be a great move.

  11. If Derrick Williams isnt available with the third pick i think we should trade down and pick up the 6th and 18th and then draft Leonard fredette and Brooks or Vesley Fredette and brooks. but if Williams is available at the three then take williams and fredette

  12. James Taylor says:

Even if those guys get shipped out…why stop rooting for the Jazz? Aren’t we looking at utahjazz360.com, not paulmillsapandfriends.com?

  13. The dream scenario would be Williams at 3 and Jimmer at 12 or trade the third pick and a reserve player for Iguodala and draft Jimmer at 12. The most likely scenario however is Knight and Singleton. Williams and Jimmer are very unlikely to be around at 3 and 12.

  14. Patrick says:

Woody, Take a look at the Cavs Roster, then look at last years stats, then last, look at their payroll. Then tell me that Millsap isnt worth more than the 4th pick alone. Millsap would instantly be their new All Star, or at least the best player on their team. They get him for half the cost of their current best player. Add Miles in and thats instant upgrade, at least 32 ppg all for less than they are paying their top guy. Tell me they can get that with anyone available at 4th pick? Someone may outbid us, but Millsap is overpaying for just the 4th pick alone.. And of course I always try to come out on top of a trade. You wont see me offering up something for nothing..

  15. Lance I agree, Williams and Fredette would be my first choice as well but not likely going to happen. I wouldn’t mind Knight and Singleton though.

    PS- nice missionary photo =)
