Devin Harris!

Posted by: Jazz Man on May 31st, 2011

The author's views are entirely his or her own and may not reflect the views of the Utah Jazz.

With the upcoming lottery a lot of people have quickly forgotten what we have in PG Devin Harris. Devin is a former #5 pick and NBA allstar. Most importantly, he is finally in a system where he can excel. Granted, i would have liked to see a bit more form him last season but he was in a tough situation. He was thrown on a new team that was in the middle of a LOT of turmoil. Now with time to learn the offense and prepare for a new season Devin could well be on his way back to the Allstar game. The jazz have a proven history of turning point guards into stars.

This doesnt mean that we don’t go after a guy like knight in the draft. At 6′3 knight is well adapt to play shooting guard. A harris knight back court would have amazing potential. Devin has the talent to lead our team next season but he needs the same support we gave Williams.

Exactly. Together with the more-than-probable fact that Okur is done, this is why I stick with the idea of drafting Kanter. Then add a specialty player with 12th pick that can be a long-range threat or a super-defender.

Even if Kanter is not pleased by being picked by Utah (if we consider there is a part of truth in the early miscommunications), he has a max trade value for teams finding young players like Lakers, Celtics, Spurs, etc.

  2. Jazz Man says:

Kanter could have a lot of potential. You can’t go wrong with too many bigs, there will always be injury/foul trouble at those positions.

  3. KCJones says:

    I’m liking Kanter.

  4. I promise Jazz Man that I didn’t see your post until I had already posted mine. I just posted a lengthy post about Harris and Knight in the back court. Great Minds think a like eh : )

  5. JRN5150 says:

Hoopshype reported yesterday that Portland is interested in acquiring Harris this summer. After all of the crap some of you gave Patrick he may be right.

  6. Jazz Man says:

Haha they gonna trade Mathews back? Portland is interested in our entire roster…that is their scouting approach. We won’t trade Harris to Portland.

  7. I would trade Harris to Portland for Gerald Wallace if that was available. I really like Harris on offense but he really doesn’t put forth any effort on defense and it drives me nuts. Gerald Wallace at the 3 and draft Kemba to play the one and we would have a pretty solid defensive team. I think that having Hayward start this year is really going to help our outside shooting, although one person can’t do it by himself, so it would still be a weakness of ours. But we would be a great defensive and rebounding team, and that will win you plenty of games.

I still waiting Harris all star level…
I still waiting AK all star level…

once again, i wish this could be their year.
so i love to see D Will 2.0, and Jimmer in the Jazz draft, to backup those kids

    What do you think guys?

  9. Kevin says:

Portland needs to freaking look for their own players. What kind of moron team seriously just waits to see what the Jazz do each time before they decide who they want? Get off our backs fools! I am so sick of hearing about Portland interested in every jazz prospect or player. We need to pretend to be all interested in signing Ostertag and John Starks so that the Blazers rush in and offer a huge front loaded contract to them.

  10. Woody Palmer says:

@Henri too many bigs is a problem. Right now we have one of the best front courts in the NBA, especially if Milsap can come off the bench. Yeah Memo is not coming back to where he was, but are we really looking to replace our 4th big that averages about 5 minutes a night with a 4.2 million dollar 3rd pick?

If the Jazz go Kanter then say goodbye to Al or Paul (unless they intend to trade him). Unfortunately, if Paul can’t permanently move to the 3 I think that it will be him that gets moved. This really doesnt bother me if the Jazz think that Kanter will be better than Paul, or Al for that matter. But I just dont see that. There are too many questions with Kanter.

I cant seem to put him that much farther ahead of Knight so that causes me to lean more towards drafting for need more.

The last thing the Jazz FO wants to do is lose Milsap, and its unfair to ship Al out after one terrible year where he clearly gave everything he had every night.

If Portland is interested in Harris I will bet the only deal will have to include Matthews. They need a good point guard more than Matthews. They have liked him for quite a while. I think that is one of the reasons the Jazz got him in the trade to dangel him to the Blazers..The deal would probably have to include Miller. He only has one year and could be ok to train the newly drafted Knight.. CJ would need to go also to make the numbers add up.

  12. Adam says:

My dream situation and I think a lot of this can happen: draft Kanter, draft Jimmer, trade Millsap and CJ for Kevin Martin, sign Marcus Thornton and DeAndre Jordan, and resign Andrei for about 5 million. It’s a long shot, but drating Jimmer and Kanter and solidifying our backcourt with trading Millsap and adding Jordan would be awesome. Shooting from Thornton and Jimmer would be much needed and could provide a solid back up.

  13. KCJones says:

    I like that scenario, Adam

  14. Patrick says:

Adam, where are you getting all that money? We would be lucky to sign one guy. Kevin looks to be popular, why would they trade? DeAndre Jordan would be a good pick up, but where’s the money to obtain him? I like your high dreams, but it involves to much money and no realism. Figure out a way to get rid of Okurs contract, bring AK back for around 4 mil, and then you might pull some of it off, but I doubt it.

LK, I would prefer to bring Babbitt with Mathews. Leaves us some wiqqle room with money, brings in a young SF and experienced SG, adresses our holes. Maybe we could send CJ or Bell up and get the 21st pick as well.. Portland gets Harris and Miles, we get Mathews, Babbitt, and 21st pick. We would then have to bring AK back, hopefully around 4 mil a yr, with team options on future yrs. We would also need to use our picks on PG’s. Not our best case scenerio for getting better but it is one direction. You could always send Millsap to the Cavs for the 4th pick, 32nd pick, and Sessions, adding a PG and allowing you to pick up both Kanter and Knight.

Of course that sure is a lot of wheeling and dealing, but all possible. Cavs would bite, Millsap would be their best player at half the price of their current best player, and they could still get their PG. Irving and Millsap from this yrs draft would be huge for the Cavs. 32 pick for us could mean Shelvin Mack, or Goudelock, or some other guy to fill in a hole. Eh, to many possible options.

  15. Colby says:

Jazz don’t see Harris as a future PG for our team. It’s been said from many sources during the combine. Kanter is WAY too unknown, little experience and a very bad attitude. Look for Harris to be traded and the Jazz to draft 2 point guards. I would guess either Knight/Kemba(all signs point to Kemba so far) and Jimmer and for TY to run a SWARM offense from here on out.

  16. L.K.Anderson says:

@Patrick: I only say Miller because they want to get rid of him. Each team would take a last year contract player.I don’t think they gave Babbit a chance. Maybe throw in Bell for Babbit and a pick. If you trade Sap you are looking at too many rookies. 2-3 picks is plenty for one year..

  17. L.K.Anderson says:

Also Sap WAS the Jazz best player last year. Of course he would be the best player on a lot of teams.

  18. Patrick says:

LK, I am just throwing things out there. Millsap is my favorite player. Would truly be sad if they traded him. Bets are that they draft Knight and Singleton or Hamilton, or maybe Kanter and Fredette. Who knows, but it will probably be pretty simple.

Who knows, maybe they will draft Knight and Walker then trade Harris away like others think. I cant wait for next season to start. It will be nice to see where we are at next season. Less than 3 weeks until the draft part is over with.
