Meet
O’Connor to leave GM position
Posted by: Jazz Man on August 6th, 2012
The author's views are entirely his or her own and may not reflect the views of the Utah Jazz.Brian T and others are reporting that Kevin O’Connor will be leaving his position as GM for the Utah Jazz and moving into an executive position with the Jazz. Dennis Lindsey (San Antonio’s Assistant GM) is being cited as a possible replacement for O’Connor.
Personally I think we should do whatever we can to keep O’Connor in the organization. If this is what he wants and if we are able to bring in help at the GM position then this is great for the Jazz.Dennis Lindsey could be a great addition if he is indeed hired.

Bringing in a second very smart GM while still maintaining KOC’s eye and IQ for movement is great. I’m glad he’s not leaving.
I think this is a good move. You still keep O’Conner because I think he is one of the best drafting GM’s but he is very hesitant to make a trade. I think with this new GM the Jazz will get about the same thing as KOC but I think he is more willing to pull the trigger.
THANK YOU!!
Can we get POP to come with Dennis? Thats the next move in my opinion. Sorry but I still haven’t gained much confidence with Corbin. Blue collar guy, but we need more than hard work to compete for a championship. Thats just me
Don’t mind KOC taking on a different role but sticking around though. Hopefully this gives us more connections to work with bringing in another guy thats made things happen with other organizations…
That actually sucks Koc has done a great job this offseason. But nice to see he sticking around though
Ya Corbin is absolutely on probation @Jake!! Key injuries are the only reason Corbin wasnt fired. A healthy Howard, CJ, Watson, Bell and Jazz would have been drafting in the top 5.
Hopefully, hopefully, hopefully he brings that Spur philosophy of PLAYING and DEVELOPING euro players, like oh say, KANTER maybe. I understand its ultimately the coach that determines the minutes, but a GM that encourages the coach to develop those players AND to play rookies a ton of minutes. In other words looking at was is best for the franchise and not a few vets.
Thats how you create a championship culture that does not configure the whole franchise on 1 player. Theres a system, theres a culture, and the players being drafted or tradef for have to fit the franchise and not the other way around.
Everyone with great ideas here is your chance to put in for the job.. Good Luck!!
Post was all ready filled by the time it leaked out! To bad we could not have gotten someone in here before oh ya know the middle of the offseason. We could have a team on its way to compete instead of one treading water! Thank you KOC for making the D-Will trade but still screwing it up when it comes to assembling a roster around those players. Instead we have a team trying to build around a mediocre player which leads to a mediocre team.
Hahaha, too bad. Totally love the DWill trade! I love the Marvin addition, but would have been better to keep Harris and traded Al, Watson, and Bell. KOC really goofed there. Hawks were blowing up the team and Joe Johnson 19M was being moved. KOC should have jumped in there. The Perfect Opportunity missed by KOC. Now we lost Harris (he averaged all star numbers in Al’s DNPs) still have Al 15M, Watson 2+M, and BELL 3.7M!! Indecision is just as bad as poor decisions. If the GM boots Al in the next few weeks, hell be one hell of a GM, and I see a championship in 1 or 2 years.
If I was GM I would hire a goon to take out Bells knee in off season, (in a non-basketball related incident) so that his insurance pays and his future rates go up. Then ask for a medical/ disabled exception use that roster spot and money on something of value. Jk, I would not do that……
Ya all sound like you could do a better job , ya better put a bid on it or you might just be unsatisfied again .
Sorry but I think KOC did as good a job as anyone could after all we are only humans right ? Oh yea we have some super stars on this site that might be more than human .
I wish the best to KOC and also the new GM that we get .
Lets go Jazz , I still beleive !!!!!!!!!
Being a GM is one of the hardest jobs in basketball and O’Connor deserves a lot of praise for the work he’s done.
I could do a better job. I would have put in but the position was filled before anyone knew anything. I would really like one of you to show me where he has done a good job? Has he done a decent job yes but has he been building a championship contender? Definately not.
Great post Jay and all the other supporters of KOC. I agree that KOC is a great GM, a great player evaluator, and a professional.
Anybody that thinks they can do a better job is naive and has no idea what day to day stuff KOC has had to do. Anybody that says “KOC should’ve got this player or that player” is being short-sighted. Maybe he tried to get those players but the other teams/agents/players simply didn’t want to. Getting players to Utah is tougher than it seems.
I think I read a post that said KOC should have got Joe Johnson and his contract. What???? One of the worst contracts in the league??? I’m definitely glad KOC has been running things and look forward to Lindsey bringing even more to the organization.
Thank you @Shane, you are going to make 2 key points for me:
Number1: people need to become better readers before they dismiss comments or post as being inaccurately this or that. Come on people, reading comprehension. I NEVER, NOT ONCE suggested that the Jazz should trade FOR Joe Johnson! I did however suggest the Jazz FACILITATE a Nets Hawks trade. And this was not in hindsight mind you, I proposed this trade in FORESIGHT:
NETS, NETS, NETS, NETS GET:
Joe Johnson, in other words JJ goes to the Nets NOT Utah (which did happen by the way)
Hawks get:
Al, Watson, Bell (all expiring contracts)
JAZZ, JAZZ, JAZZ, JAZZ GET:
Marvin Williams (which did happen by the way), Morrow, Petro,
Basically that was the trade with some other players in there to make the numbers work, Farmar, S. Williams, picks etc.
That wasnt that crazy of a proposal being that on the Hawks and Nets side all the players I included DID get traded to each other, and Marvin to the Jazz, so there was DEFINITELY an opportunity for KOC to make this trade, he didnt though, and we still have Bell and Watson, and Al.
Number 2: You said it @Shane! The Johnson contract, “one of the worst contracts in the league,” you are ABSOLUTELY right. Some even labeled it as UNTRADEABLE!!…….YET, in Danny Ferry’s first days, YES DAYS, as the Hawks BRAND NEW GM, he actually traded an “untradedable” contract, a contract you wrote was “one of the worst contracts in the league.” Ferry blew up a perpetual early exit playoff team with the intension of building a championship team. Just making the playoffs was not good enough for a GM like Ferry, so he traded away 2 of their best players to free up 27M…..and he did that in a few DAYS as GM.
So how exactly did Ferry make possible the impossible???? Uhhh by freaking DOING IT. So you a lot of KOC supports are right: KOC could make the trades before the draft, couldnt move Al, or Watson, or Bell, he couldnt traded into the draft, you are right KOC couldnt do any of those things, but maybe the new GM can, and like Ferry not settle for mediocrity.
Time to hire Stockton as Gm or even let hornecek do it
It seems to be a done deal with Lindsey so its a mute point about promoting Hornacek to GM, but with his recent interest in applying for the Orlando Head coach job it seems he would rather be a coach than deal with the business side of things. Stockton seems content to be away from the NBA on a day to day basis.
I’m sure Lindsey will do a good job but I think Jeff or John would be more fearless at at the job
Solid move!
Adding Lindsey for more stat analysis and day to day will strengthen the organization.
No loss, just an addition, with a great background.

I was really worried until I read that he’d been an assistant with the Spurs for 4-5 years, and Pop said he’d be the man for the job if Buford were to step down.
If Pop’s sold on him, I’m sold on him. New blood can be revitalizing for a franchise.
