My upcoming draft day selections…so far
Posted by: Kory Woodland on February 15th, 2013
The author's views are entirely his or her own and may not reflect the views of the Utah Jazz.As of today, we are projected to get picks 18, 22 and 48.
Our biggest need is PG depth with someone who hopefully develops into a strong franchise piece. The top 4 PG’s are Marcus Smart (3), Michael Carter Williams (9), CJ McCollum (13) and Trey Burke (22). All 4 are talented in their own way. Burke is the smallest of the bunch but I personally believe he is the Damian Lillard of this draft which means his stock will likely rise and we would be fortunate to pick him if he is still on the board come time to select the 18th pick.
If the stars perfectly align for us and we are able to take him, I would then pick whoever is available between Alex Poythress (PF) 6′8″ / 240 from Kentucky (projected 18), Tony Mitchell (PF) 6′8″ / 235 from N Texas (projected 23) or Patric Young (PF) 6′8″ / 250 from Florida (projected 37). Any of these 3 guys would be a sweet option to backup Favors assuming Millsap is traded. Poythress attacks the rim and has a soft rainbow jumper (similar to Malone and Boozer), Mitchell averages 3 blks, is a good defender and rebounds on both ends of the court. He is also a good spot up shooter. (YouTube Tony Mitchell ball is life). He is a mix between Favors and Evans. Kinda like Paul George on steroids! Young is a beast around the rim who specializes in dunking, rebounding and blocking shots. I would then look to add more depth at PG by picking up Ray McCallum (projected 44). He has been compared to Mo Williams.
Ideally we draft Trey Burke (PG), Tony Mitchell (PF), and Ray McCallum (PG) to fill needed positions assuming we didn’t move up or down in the draft via trades.
Now to deal with our trade assets (Millsap, Jefferson etc)
3 way trade with Bobcats and Clippers
Utah gets Bledsoe, Diop and B Gordon (to make the money work)
Bobcats get Jefferson, C Butler, K Murphy
Clippers get Millsap, Bell
Utah’s new roster-
Mo Williams / Bledsoe / Burke / McCallum (D League)
Foye / Burks / B Gordon
Hayward / Marv Williams / Carroll
Favors / Mitchell / Evans
Kanter / Diop (until we can upgrade)
Utah sheds Watson, Tinsley, Bell and greatly improves PG depth while allowing Favors and Kanter to shine by trading away Millsap and Jefferson. Next step would be to move Diop for an upgrade and trade away either Foye or B Gordon. Most likely B Gordon because of his salary and Foye is a better fit. Maybe trade Diop and Gordon for picks and target the best backup C available?

If the 3 way trade went down before the trade deadline and we knew we had Mo Williams and Bledsoe at PG, I would still go after T Burke early and target DeWayne Dedmon 7′0″ C out of USC with our late pick
I was confused for a minute with the Clippers/Bobcats deal I thought you were proposing we have 4 PG’s after that deal and the draft. Someone was going to be very unhappy.
I still think if we were to acquire Trey Burke in the draft and keep Mo, we might not need Eric Bledsoe. Bledsoe is young and talented and is going to demand playing time to progress, by having him here we are not going to find too much time for Trey to play. Of course Mo will probably miss about 10 games, but if that is the only games he is going to see back up and not garbage minutes he might end up feeling like he has no confidence from the coaching staff and try and do too much, and then Alec Burks might take some of those minutes away. Assuming we draft Trey, we would be doing so with half an eye on the future. He isn’t going to run the point from the beginning but he needs to find time on the floor or it will be a wasted pick. I think we make a play for Eric Bledsoe once Paul stays at the Clippers, and after we don’t draft the PG we want from the draft.
Diop and Gordon are way too much baggage for AL and Sap..Bledsoe ain’t worth that much..
I’m not as high on Bledsoe as a lot of people are. I don’t know if I like his game for the Jazz system. I think he’d excel more with other teams than with us.
@ Steven, Ultimately I’d like to keep Millsap and have him come off the bench behind Favors, draft Burke, the best backup Center and McCallum and free ourselves of Watson, Tinsley, Bell and Al’s contract. Then I try and move Marvin for a better option at SF to backup Hayward going into the future. Marvin has really disappointed me. I though he was going to be our best player this year
In my humble opinion that is one of the worst trades I’ve seen on this site. The Jazz dont need three quality SG, Im starting to think Bledsoe is overrated and unless we get a good big in return we cant trade both and still make a playoff push. I also wouldnt want to trade Murphy as I think he will become a serviceable back up to Burks in a few years.
I believe it was yesterdays game against the Lakers where Chris Paul tore shreds off Bledsoe for a lack of effort. not sure we want that
That roster is typical jazz mediocrity. No one can honestly say that roster would allow us to contend at all. In fact, I think it’s a worse team than what we have now.
Sure, Burk may be great, but it’s not enough and I’m done with drafting solid players and taking 10 years to develop them. That model is outdated and doesn’t work in the end.
That roster sucks. It doesn’t say that jazz have a shot at doing any better than they the last 10 years. #donewiththemediocrity.
IMO this trade and draft picks are Great! Dropping the garbage we currently have at pg and upgrading it Tremendously. I like Mini Lebron(Bledsoe). He’s way talented. 1 game shouldnt change your mind. I think they love him and wont trade him anyways. The only thing I agree with you other guys is Gordon. While good, I think Burks would get even more lost in the line-up cause of Corbins veteran bias. And if would could somehow swing Milsap off the bench, I would be ecstatic.
Yeah Ben Gordon is $13 million of dead weight that we neither want nor need.
And I’m actually surprised so many people think/assume we should re-sign Mo. He’s been hurt for a huge portion of the season, and injuries are nothing new to his history. We’re spending $8.5 million on him this year, and it will cost at least that much per year to sign him long term.
It would be a lot smarter to let him go and sign/trade for someone cheaper and more dependable. I still say we involve Jefferson in a multi-team deal that lands us Greivis Vasquez. Then draft a PG with one of our first round picks, and possibly another with the second rounder.
Disco and Ben, you guys make me smile. Everyone is demanding that we start handing the reins over to the “core 4″ yet you don’t expect to have lesser talent than Millsap or Jefferson backing them up. I don’t think we need B Gordon by any means, but we may have to take on questionable contract in order to get a key player while shedding unwanted roster fillers. BTW, he is pretty good
How is the roster worse?
E Bledsoe + T Burke > end of their careers Tinsley + Watson, plus there is a natural solid takeover at PG once we shed Mo.
True, Foye, Burks and B Gordon create a logjam at SG, but again we might have to take on a contract to make other things happen. Maybe we package B Gordon and Marvin Williams or B Gordon and Mo or B Gordon and Diop to target a better backup Center by this time next season
Poythress or Mitchell would be a beast coming off the bench for Favors. They like Favors are young, athletic, and full of upside
Diop is obviously not the best center in the league, but how many great backup centers are there? I’d much rather have a guy like Hibbert, Ed Davis, Larry Sanders or Greg Monroe but then Kanter would still be fighting to get sufficient minutes
Diop & Gordon = Way too much dead weight. Only way Jazz do this is if MKG and Walker come with.
kory, Giop is 3rd string at best. i have no issues with your drafts as i am not up to date in that area but both jefferspn and sap effectively for bledsoe and rubbish is ludicyous
I would love a roster that looked like this (while maintaining our core 4) but it’s not realistic. (choose any 2 of 4 2nd tier players listed at each position)
D Lillard, J Holiday, I Thomas, K Walker
Burks, E Gordon, B Beal, D Waiters
Hayward, K Faried, K Leonard, C Parsons
Favors, Millsap, E Davis, T Robinson
Kanter, R Hibbert, G Monroe, L Sanders
Lets be real here…
The clippers give up butler and bledsoe for Sap and a $3.5 million empty seat? the clippers have much better offers for bledsoe alone, and you want to include a starting SF?
And why in the world would you want to bring ben gordon and his $12 mil to be a 3rd string cheerleader, especially with his recent blowup with his coach that makes the raja situation last year look like patty cake..
This trade really does’t make much sense. You can do better Kory, i know you can haha
Steve is right. Gordon is a one dimensional player and is no good for 13 mil next year. Diop is terrible. He hasn’t played in more than 27 games since the 2009/2010 season and has only averaged 14 mpg his career. His stats are terrible. I like the idea of Bledsoe and Burk, but it’s not enough back for proven assests in Jefferson and Milsap.
I personally believe and feel that Kanter is not ready to start. More minutes? Absolutely. Start? Not yet. I would just rather have him come off the bench, and dominate the 2nd unit, than constantly worry about foul trouble going against veteran starting C’s.
So in any deal, i’m trying to bring back one big man that would start with Favors. Doesn’t have to be an All star player but a servicable one.
I think a guy like Robin Lopez would be perfect, and he just happens to be teammates with Greivis Vasquez.
The Clips are not trading Bledose, until Chrissi is signed next summer, not going to do the Jazz any favors, like disposing of toxic waste for the Jazz.
What is the salary to resign Mo? Certainly not the $8.5m he makes now. He’s a good PG for the right salary.
Enes the menace is ready for a starting role and more time, at least more time.
