No improvement after landing Calderon

The author's views are entirely his or her own and may not reflect the views of the Utah Jazz.

As much as Jazz fans wish we were the ones getting Calderon, I question what they are thinking in Detroit. Obviously they do not plan to make Knight their lead PG going forward. They are going to need more pieces than Calderon, Drummond and Monroe (both Centers). They don’t have a SG, Maggette is their SF, and they are weak at PF. Here is a 3 way trade proposal that will help them improve in those 3 positions

I am REALLY big on getting Jrue Holiday to Utah. Our glaring weakness right now is a star PG and lack of developmental playing time for our future “core 4″. Philadelphia won’t let him go without gaining some key pieces in return. (Keep in mind, we will have to give up a few things as well and even take on a bad contract if we want to land a couple of stars)

UTAH trades – Burks, Bell, Millsap, Jefferson
DETROIT trades – B Knight, Maggette, Jerebko, Monroe
PHILLY trades – Holiday, Wright, Richardson

UTAH Roster – get our PG for the future and replace Al with a stud
Holiday / Mo Williams
Foye / Murphy
Hayward / Carroll / Maggette (bad contract to make the deal work)
Favors / Jerebko / Evans
Monroe / Kanter

DETROIT Roster – Add 2 shooting threats and as well as a scoring Center to compliment defensive minded Drummond
Calderon / Stuckey
J Richardson / Singler
D Wright / Middleton
Villanueva / Drummond
Jefferson / Kravstov

PHILLY Roster – Replace PG and SG with 2 young stars as well as upgrade at PF
B Knight / Mack
N Young / Burks
T Young / E Turner
Millsap / Allen
Bynum / Hawes

Analysis – we would have to hope that Burks is going to be a bust to throw him into the mix while loosing Millsap and Jefferson. I love Holiday and Monroe, but the other 2 are fillers to make the deal happen. I would like to get Evan Turner in the deal to develop behind Hayward, but I’m not sure Tinsley, Evans and Millsap is enough in exchange for Holiday and Turner. Philly would want a better PG in order to let Holiday slide away.

Notice our depth here (or lack of). I can’t imagine Mo being okay playing behind Jrue, although he did play behind CP3 in LA? I don’t think a supporting cast of Murphy, Carroll, Maggette, Evans and Kanter is good enough. Burks wasn’t needed to make the deal happen but I think that’s the only way it would actually be considered. Maybe include a pick instead so we can keep Burks to develop?

As I mentioned earlier in the post, Detroit looked terrible but I think this trade helps them improve. I really like Philliy’s roster of Knight / N Young / T Young / Millsap / Bynum with
Mack / Burks / Turner and Hawes off the bench

Any realistic suggestions on how we can move Millsap and Jefferson to acquire a young star PG while landing solid backups to Favors and Kanter?

  1. Note- Jerebko is not my favorite option at backup PF by a long shot, but he is a 2nd yr guy, 6′10″ and averages 8.6 PPG / 5.2 REB in 24 min per game compared to Favors off the bench with 8.1 PPG / 5.9 REB in 20 min per game. Very similar stats except D Fav weighs 20 lbs more

    why would Philly trade Holiday?

  3. He is.a.decent.backup and u.would.do.the deal fro holiday the rest would just be a bonus

  4. I love this trade more then anything I’ve ever seen on this sight. It’s realistic. All teams improve. It works money wise. I think the pick up Monroe, Holiday and Jerebko really make our team better, and we can deal with Maggette sitting on the bench for a couple of years. Great job! This needs to happen. You should email this to KOC or whoever makes trades these days.

@Trevor Night They would trade Holiday because they desperately need a power forward and I think Paul is perfect for them with the guys they’ve got. Also they would be getting Brandon Knight in return so its not like they would be hurting at the PG position.

  5. I agree they would trade jru especially getting brandon in the process

  6. …What they are thinking in Detroit was getting out of Tayshaun Prince’s contract and also dumping the contract of Austin Daye… The only reason they ever aqquired Maggette is because he has less years remaining than Gordon did…another bad contract.

They already know that Calderon will sign with a contender this offseason and Maggette, well who knows… The Pistons, if they don’t resign any of their own players will have $37 Million in cap space this offseason… now if they could only unload that Charlie V. contract. I believe a player like Calderon could be swapped again before the deadline to a team like the Celtics who need a solid PG for the rest of the season.

Honestly, If thats all the Grizzlies could get for Rudy Gay, I think we are better off with letting the contracts expire and taking the cap space. The Jazz could resign Carroll, Foye and Mo and two first rounders and still have around $24 Million in space to take into next year…just hold it throughout the season… every year players are just awarded to a team with the cap space to absorb them. Like the time the Jazz gave Maynor to the Thunder… or the Cavs last week just taking Selby, Ellington and Speights, or the Pistons getting Calderon for two bad contracts, just because they were one of very few teams that could.

Philly is not going to trade Holiday. Also, Detroit will not trade Monroe. Sorry to burst your bubble.

All of this trade talk is fun, but I don’t think most realize just how difficult it is to make a trade. This isn’t fantasy basketball. Many parties have to be motivated, salaries have to line up. Teams make trades, or do not make trades for many reasons.

I’m sorry to say, but the Jazz are very unlikely to trade Millsap or Jefferson at this juncture. When contracts expire and cap space if freed up in the off season, we could then see some things happen. Or possibly, they turn the reigns over to the youth of our team?

Put it into a trade machine like

Does this actually work? and who can follow it?
