Paul Millsap = David West

I was doing a player comparison between Paul Millsap and David West and couldn’t believe how similar their stats are. West’s averages are slightly higher in most categories only because he plays 3 more mpg. West is an inch taller but Millsap is 5 yrs younger. In head to head battles West seems to outmatch Millsap. Millsap in making $8.6 Mil in comparison to West $10 Mil.

Who will be more popular this offseason in free agency? Who would be more likely to backup Favors? Although West has made more money, I think he is more likely to assume a bench role simply because of his age (32)

Until Favors can learn to stay on the floor, he might continue coming off the bench. Time will tell

I say take Paul Millsap. First he will cost you about what West is going to cost you, but he already knows the team and the system, so it gives him a big jump on the aging west. The other thing is you can get Sap for 4 yrs, stack it heavy at the begining, decresing over the yrs and your good to go. Sap will have trade value in the future, if you decided to go that way. Bench or starter wont matter without Al, there are enough minutes to go around.

  2. I’ve been hearing comparisons between the two for a long time but Millsap has always seemed better to me. Plus there’s the fact that Millsap keeps improving in different aspects every season while West stays pretty much the same. Millsap is the Utah Jazz incarnate.

Id take West. I think many Jazz fans love of Millsap blinds them to his defensive issues, the issues being that he cant defend the basket. @Nick – I agree that Millsap is Jazz incarnate, can look good but when you compare him to the elite PF he just comes under par

They are very similar players, West out muscles opponents whereas Millsap out quicks them and also has to give more effort due to his lack of size.
Id take Sap over West here in utah for the same reasons Nick brought up, but if i were anywhere else i’d take West.

Your talking maybe two yrs of West, Vs more of Millsap. If you were talking yrs ago, when West had more time to come in, learn the system, etc then you would have to take a closer look. But for two yrs for an aging player past his prime, needing to learn the system, its Sap hands down. Secondly, West has an inch on Sap, and a little weight, but he fairs no better against elite bigs than Millsap does. The only reason sap has to battle more is because he lost the extra pounds so he could play other positions. Sorry, Sap is better for the future than West.

  6. Disco–It’s true that Millsap is an inferior defender to West. But Millsap seems to be a lot more active on the offensive end, and he is younger. If Millsap was paired with an elite defender *cough FavorsorKanter cough* it wouldn’t be as much of an issue. I mean truly, he’s paired with the worst defensive player in the NBA, at least the worst defensive big man.

Jeferson’s non-defense impacts our entire team. With a good help defender to play with, Millsap’s size wouldn’t be HALF the issue it is now.

Despite what David Locke desperately tells us, Paul Millsap hasn’t spent enough time on the court with Favors or Kanter for us to gauge the effectiveness of such a pairing.

They haven’t even played 100 minutes together. I’d love to hold onto Sap and pair him with Faves or Kanter.

  7. Unless they are willing to be a 6th man off the bench , I wouldn’t take either of them. They are not good enough to be starting in front of Favors.

  8. Patrick says:

Jared, it wouldnt matter much since it would be a 3 man rotation, plenty of minutes for everyone. Also, think Favors will be playing Center more than PF in the future. Guess we will see.

100% agree Jared @nick Sap shouldn’t have to rely on playing with a good defender to seem like a good defender, why not just pair up the two good defenders that you mentioned?
