Would Phoenix bite?

Posted by: Kory Woodland on February 17th, 2013

The author's views are entirely his or her own and may not reflect the views of the Utah Jazz.

Phoenix has not only shown interest in Jefferson but have also mentioned moving W Johnson.

Could we trade Jefferson and Murphy for Gortat and W Johnson + their 13th pick to give us a better chance at landing Trey Burke?

Note, this proposal wasn’t suggested because I love Gortat and think he is the best fit in Utah. I’m catering to the “trade Al” fans. I liked Wes Johnson during his draft and would also love their 13th pick. Big Al is better than anything they would get at 13, but no way they trade their 5th pick for him

I doubt Phoenix would bite on that one, but I’ll keep hoping for something along those lines.

Gortat forced his way out of Orlando because he wanted to start. He would cause the same problems here. Dont like it. If he was expiring I would do it but he isnt. Gortat is a respectable starter and will not like the bench.

  3. Thats why we need to bemch paul instead of favors anyway.

Who cares if Gotat doesnt want to come off the bench. He gets paid, and he plays. He could be used to trade to another team as well. Either way with one yr left, it could happen. In this case you would probably want to shop Gortat, and get that draft pick for sure.

I wonder if you could make the trade, get the draft pick and then if LA Clippers would take Gortat for Bledso?

There is a lot of idle speculation of who wouldn’t want be here if they were bench players. When Paul Millsap didn’t sign the contract in the summer it must have been because he wanted more more than $8m a season and didn’t want to be a bench player. The fact is though the Jazz at the time could only offer him 3 extra years on top of the year he already had left, by waiting until the end of this season to sign he could get an extra year to that contract. Also by signing that deal last summer might have meant Millsap coming off the bench to accommodate an expiring Jefferson contract, and playing time for Favors and Kanter. There is a big difference between splitting playing time 4 ways instead of 3 ways.

Teams pay the money in the contracts and are entitled to play the players anyway they see fit that is going to be the most successful for the individual player and the team as a whole. It is up to the coach to communicate that in such a way that to get the desired results. Gregg has no such problems getting Manu to come off the bench. OKC had no problems maximising Harden’s impact as the sixth man. The fact is that if Jefferson and Millsap were to be moved on and another big man was acquired in their place or even if one them were to stay – the time split 3 ways is going to be a lot easier to manage next season than it has up until now. Besides both Kanter and Favors, though talented, are still raw, whoever plays alongside them whether as part of the starting five or off the bench is going to see plenty of playing time.

We need to get away from this idea that someone won’t be willing to play the role that the head coach decides. It’s up to the coach to sell that role in such a way that they get the maximized performance out of each individual player. If this team is going to be even more successful in the future it has to be about less about individual stats and minutes and more about doing whatever it takes to win each and every game as a team.

    Phoenix bites.

“trade al” fans…? haha i like how you are now labeling fans. how would you label yourself?

i dont like wes johnson on this team. has no real skill, he’s not even producing on a terrible team. And why bring another 3 when we already have Marv, DMC, and Hayward?

  9. Im more about trading Marvin, Mo, and Millsap. If You could get some younger pieces, draft picks and solidify the PG with a better balanced game than what Mo brings then Keeping Al makes sense. gives us stable scoring and honestly it seems he is developing Favs and Kanter better than the coaches are. Millsap is good. we just have the spot covered. and sorry but Als scoring ability is better than Millsap. Millsap is overrated deep in the post on defense and offense, but he makes up for it on offensive cuts and steals on defense. But you HAVE to have a reliable go to guy that can beat double teams on most nights. Millsap struggles against one sometimes because of size.
