Bledsoe for Millsap on the works ?

Posted by: Henri on February 17th, 2013

The author's views are entirely his or her own and may not reflect the views of the Utah Jazz.

At least both teams may be discussing the point according to EPSN:

http://espn.go.com/los-angeles/nba/story/_/id/8956469/los-angeles-clippers-utah-jazz-talk-eric-bledsoe-paul-millsap-sources-say

I know “sources” say a lot of things, in particular to test market value or sell newspaper … but since KG has decided not to burn his no-trade clause, closing the door to a Celtics-LAC trade, this rumor may have legs. I think, A 3rd team may be included to make maoney/roster spot work.

Would the Jazz be better now with Bledsoe rather than Millsap ? And next year ? I don’t know …

  1. I really hope not. Bledsoe is a combo guard, not a point guard. We already have two combo guards at the 1 right now (Mo Williams and Alec Burks).

I don’t believe Bledsoe is significantly better than Burks.

Also, it would kill me if this team gets rid of Paul Millsap and holds on to Marvin freaking Williams.

  2. Henri says:

I am going to answer my own post.

What a great move would it be to:

1- trade Millsap for Bledsoe and eventually still make the playoffs.
2- let Big Al walk in free agency this summer
3- Sign Millsap back when he becomes free agent this summer.

If this is the big picture, I’m all for it !

  3. Austin says:

Thoughts on this since sap for Bledsoe don’t work straight up

  4. Omar says:

Make Clippers better while getting a player that will be made to stand at 3 point land and throw entry passes to Al (40+ minutes per game when Millsap leaves) almost all game???!! How does that improve our team?

    TRADE AL!

    4 more days…

  5. I mean, Bledsoe is significantly better than Tinsley and Watson, but he is a poor shooter. He’s basically a mirror image of Alec Burks. The only difference betyween the two is that Clippers-a contender by the way–have found ways to give Bledsoe significant playing time. Something that our franchise-not a contender-has been incapable of doing for our young talent.

  6. Henri says:

I think we’ve got to look at it from both basketball and financial standpoint, as a function of time.

    - From Basketball standpoint … well not sure the move would improve us right now (Paul’s overall impact versus Bledsoe’s quickness that would shake this team) AND in the future … unless Millsap is resigned and AL released as I stated.

    - Financially … Obviously straight trade does not work, which means either a 3rd team would be involved or other players would be in the mix. Through in picks and TPEs. Jazz FO will never do something they don’t believe in, money-wise and flexibility-wise.

It would be good to be a mouse in KOC/Lindsey’s pocket for a moment …

  7. In 12 games as a starter this season, Bledsoe averaged 14.2 points, 4.8 rebounds, 5.3 assists, 2.5 steals, 1.3 blocks, and 0.6 three-pointers in 34 minutes per game.

…that is quite a bit better than Burks actually, who I still think is a shooting guard. In fact, given a regular starting job, I think he would become the best player of the Jazz roster. 2.5 steals and 1.3 blocks is absurd, all defensive first team numbers. … Bledsoe will be special, he is worth taking back a less than ideal contract … roll the dice!

  8. Omar says:

Id love the trade if I knew Al was being tradef in another trade. But Im afraid if Jazz move Sap first, that could mean my worst nightmare….resigning Al!!!

Will Jazz iso heavy Al for 40+ minutes, less touches for Bledsoe, less running cuz of Al. Hes pretty much going to have to become a stand around spot up 3 point shooter….like Marvin!

Does that mean Al gets minutes at PF? If hes playing 40+ minutes? I cant image him boxing out or guarding Ibaka, BG, Lee, Manimal, etc.

    Please trade Al!!

  9. Browncoat says:

The Jazz are in probably the best spot they have been in years and this is the time to make a move. We have two desirable and reliable big men with expiring contracts. If we can get a decent center to go with a legit shooting guard or small forward and a young point we could be fighting for a top seed in the west for years to come.

  10. Henri says:

@omar: Trading Millsap does not necessarily means resigning Al. Let Al walk and sign who you want/can as a free agent … including Millsap. That would be the beauty of the process !

  11. the funny part is, Clippers fans want Jefferson … the rest of the league seems to think higher of Big Al than most Jazz fans. Personally, I can see both sides of it, Al is better than he gets credit for around here. I have a feeling Jefferson will be resigned this off season. I don’t hate the idea of it either… two factors have exposed his defensive weaknesses 1.playing next to Millsap, who is not a good rim protector either, Favors is a great protector and would cover for Al much better than Millsap can … and 2. terrible perimiter defense allows opposing PGs to get into the paint, Bledsoe would solve that as I believe he is already one of the great PG defenders in the NBA.

  12. Browncoat says:

@Henri Letting either Al or Millsap walk is a terrible decision. Trade both for good players under contract or other assets.

  13. Omar says:

I hope you are right henri, but I think Jazz wont let the player demanding the biggest contact from other nba teams to walk for free: I think its either going to be trade Al or resign him, probably at a ridiculously high overpaid price, and will handcuff the Jazz in the next two years (self imposed bad contract), as they try and resign Favors, Hayward, Bledsoe, Burks Kanter.

Al is worth about 7M. 16M and increasing will be worse than AK47.

  14. L.K.Anderson says:

Bledsoe nickname is “Little Bron.” Could have a backcourt of Bledsoe/Burks.
We are close to being 2/3 the season done. The bigger portion of this years salary will have been paid. So any throw ins either way could easily be waived.
Also any UFA this year if traded before the deadline would have to “extend” his contract to the new team. As in the case of Harden to Rockets. I guarentee they will not do the trade unless it is done this way. Why trade just to let them walk in a few months??
That said the Wiz are looking at the Hawks Smith. Hawks want a center so Horford can play PF. So Smith to Wiz,
AL to Hawks, and Wall to Jazz. With necessary throwins. Al would be closer to his home and the Wiz would be better as would the Jazz.

  15. You guys confuse me. One minute everyone wants to trade Millsap and Jefferson so that Favors and Kanter can play, yet you want to trade and resign Sap??? I think it would be sweet to trade Sap for Bledsoe and resign Sap in the offseason IF he agreed to come of the bench behind Favors like he would be behind B Griffen. Paul would have to see the benefit of the upgrade at PG and want to stay with the Jazz long term for it to work.

  16. Jazzaholic says:

I still doubt the Clips trade Bledsoe until Chrissie is signed this summer, if at all, but he’d be nice to get, depending on what the final trade looks like.

Shirley they’d give us a pick or two and take Toxic Raja, Jamaal and Earl too, just because they like the Jazz. ;-)

Also, the copy/paste on the trade machine doesn’t seem to work, spell out any trades you have in mind.

    Jazzaholic

  17. Wow making the Clippers way better! I wish we could keep Millsap somehow on as back up role! But maybe im dreaming! If we keep Al Im gonna be so pissed! He is the biggest trade asset! Does anyone know off the top of their head what the Clips could offer Millsap next year?

  18. Patrick says:

Its known that we will lose either Paul or Al this summer since we cannot resign both. I was horsing around with rumors and the trade machine and came up with something that was interesting. I know some will be upset, others may like it. Either way it could be interesting. Let me know what you think. As I stated, it was just for fun, but if we could get a draft pick in addition might be interesting.

    http://espn.go.com/nba/tradeMachine/?tradeId=a8ke5yy

Jazz get D Jordan, S Jackson, K Leonard, E Bledso
Spurs get A Jefferson, M Barns, K Murphey
Clippers get P Millsap, T Splitter, E Watson

Jackson expires, and you would let him. Spurs and Clippers are supposedly a game better each, and get their wish list player. We build for next season, hopefully getting a PG, SF, and Big to grow with the team and maybe a draft pick.

  19. Let’s satisfy LA AND Phoenix

Phoenix gets Jefferson (C), Marv Williams (SF), R Hollins (C)

LA gets Millsap (PF), Gortat (C)

Utah gets Bledsoe, C Frye (PF), W Johnson (SF), D Jordan (C)

  20. Ray says:

I read somewhere that Bledsoe didn’t fill in all that well for Paul whn the latter was out.

Plus, the Clippers would need to throw in another player to make the money work. The Jazz would need to drop/buy out a player.

  21. Patrick, I like that trade proposal. Utah becomes very athletic

  22. Also how is Al going to keep up in the new offense with Bledsoe? Trade Al instead!!!

  23. Patrick that is an awesome trade!

  24. disco says:

If its in the media about the Jazz pretty sure its BS. I dont ever remember hearing about a Jazz trade before it happened. @Kory People want a good trade not just a trade for the sake of it.@LK- Wizards arent letting go of Wall

  25. JRN5150 says:

This trade would make me happier than anything. And to anybody wanting Deandre Jordan have you seen his contract? Its terrible and he wont accept a backup role to Kanter. So why trade Big Al to get somebody worse that will still take all of Kanters time? Doesnt make any sense.

  26. Disco, what are you talking about? The Clips want Millsap, the Jazz want Bledsoe and Phoenix wants Jefferson. To make it work those other players would have to be involved. Phoenix wouldn’t need Jefferson and Gortat. Utah would need a backup PF and Center. Marvin has been terrible in Utah and is one of few contracts we can’t shed in the offseason, and Phoenix has been said to have interest in moving Wes Johnson

  27. L.K.Anderson says:

    @Jazzaholic:Who is Shirley??

  28. TACOREV says:

I’m not sure what to think of this potential trade. I’d obviously much rather trade away Jefferson than Millsap — I would be happy to re-sign Millsap in the offseason, but honestly, a Jefferson re-signing would crush me.

And I’m not sure how sold I am on Bledsoe. Sure, he’s extremely athletic and has a high ceiling, but would he fit in here? Would he just be another guy sitting on the bench while Corbin continues to play Tinsley and Watson ahead of him?

Overall I might prefer the Jefferson for Splitter & Mills deal.

  29. JRN5150 says:

If we trade Big Al then nobody needs to double team us in the post. This will affect our 3 pt shooting including Randy Foye’s great year and will cut the production of Milly and Favors. Its a very underrated intangible of Al’s is the ability to draw a double team. David Locke did a show on it last week. In the Chicago game Millsap missed the pick to set up Foye at the end of the game two plays in a row. Both times he ended up getting the ball and taking a crap shot. He is selfish. He put out no effort to set that pick. It was ridiculous.

  30. Ben Williams says:

I’m sorry, but all this talk about Millsap “hustling” and “working hard” is becoming obnoxious. “Hard work” isn’t enough in this league to win a championship. You have to have the talent and ability to outmatch your opponent every night. Millsap does not do that. He has great games like every good player can have, but he’s by no means a guy who can ever take the eam on his back and win games. Millsap is good because he doesn’t have to be guarded by the other teams best big who guards Al. Boozer did the same thing for him. If anyone thinks Millsap actually should be paid 10-12 million a year and that he is a piece that your team can use to take you to the top, you’re too satisfied with mediocrity because he isn’t’ that guy. A great piece to have, yes, but not to start and not to pay 12 million a year to.

Yeah, Al takes a lot of iso shots…….every best player on every team has to be an iso player at times. They all get their shots to take, even the inefficient ones, but guess what? You need those guys to win championships. I’m not saying Al is that guy, but he is one of the best clutch shooters in the game (look at stats, when there’s 5-6 min left and the game is close, not many compare), and if we didn’t have Al, we would have to have another guy take iso shots when needed. You guys think that a perfect team holds hands and passes the ball to very player twice and sings kumbaya together before a shot is taken? Every team needs a go-to guy who can get a shot off. Al may not be the guy for us, but make no mistake- if he goes, we’ll need someone to fill that void. All this whining about Al taking 40 iso shots, blah blah blah. It’s obnoxious because who do you want on this team doing that? don’t be an idiot- every good team has at least one guy like that. Al may not be the best at it, but to say trading Al and not Millsap is a god-send is also idiotic. Really, every contending team has at least two “iso” players who take a lot of shots. Yes, Al is inconsistent, but getting at least another all-star type shot taker I think would do wonders for this team.

And because guys who can do that and make the shots when they count consistently are rare, don’t hold your breath in Al getting traded. And if the jazz can get another star-type offensive player to pair with Al……gasp! This team may just get over the hump of mediocrity.

  31. Patrick says:

Ben, You need to look outside of the Millsap Jefferson box. People are counting on Kanter and Favors on being better than both. If that is a true thought, then you need to take another look at your view. If your building your team around Jefferson 14+ mill for the rest of his career, than you need to dump off some of that young talent who will be looking for the same paycheck very shortly.. Its really about our PG position, not our post play, but we cannot keep both Paul and Al either..

  32. Ben you brought up a great point. Fans like Marty complain about watching AL’s style of play as painful, but San Antonio fans haven’t complained about similar play for years from T Duncan. That’s probably why San Antonio has interest in Al, to continue that style of play after he retires. Al makes 10-15 foot jumpers look easy and is pretty damn good at going one on one. The difference between he and Duncan is Duncan played with and practiced against David Robinson early in his career and has had Tony Parker to get the rest of the team involved. Oh yeah, let’s not forget Manu Ginobli. Perennial AllStar cast, no big deal. Duncan obviously has some talent to pass it off to which he does well while accumulating his own stats. He also finds a way to get to the line and block shots on the other end. Maybe we just need to trade for Popovich or surround Al with modern day Parker’s and Ginobli’s. Al isn’t as terrible as most Utah fans proclaim with regularity. I’m just irritated that you can’t force a guy that makes that much freaking money play on both ends of the court like Duncan.

  33. disco says:

@ Kory – DeAndre Jordan has a ridiculous contract for a bloke who cant score from further than two feet from the rim. Id take Gortat for Al and take one of their plethora of draft picks that phoenix have accumulated. I dont know the Jazz want Bledsoe, is he really the most talented young PG we can go after? Also did you really just compare Al to Tim Duncan? Seriously?

  34. Andy says:

    For Big Al/Bledsoe:

Al to Clips, Clips give up Bledsoe and Jordan

Charlotte gets Jordan, gives up Diop(big expiring contract)

Jazz get Bledsoe and Diop, give up Jefferson, waive Bell

Essentially the Jazz are going Big Al for Bledsoe which I don’t see them doing unless they aren’t planning to sign him in the offseason anyway. Charlotte gets a young starting center for practically nothing. The Clips get a guy they think can take them on a deep playoff run.

  35. The only thing that will keep CP3 from leaving LA is playing with Blake Griffen. I say we pursue the trade involving Millsap and Bledsoe, let Al and Mo walk in the offseason and sign CP3 and Griffen lol. We would already have Bledsoe and Foye  it would basically be the Utah Clippers

    CP3 / Bledsoe
    Foye / Burks
    Hayward / Carroll
    Griffen /  Evans
    Favors / Kanter

  36. TACOREV says:

Pass the blunts around Kory, you sure are smoking something potent tonight!

First, Al Jefferson now somehow deserves to be discussed in the same context as Tim Duncan.

And now suddenly the Jazz are going to not only land Chris Paul, but Blake Griffin as well… and not by trade, but by each of them signing with us of their own free will.

Yeah, I’m sure they’re getting tired of boring old Los Angeles and would rather come live the high life here in… Utah.

  37. I need to say im with ben all these milsap fans are driving me crazy. Face ot already al is hands down the better player. Paul plays hard but is one undersized two inconsistent and three very passive on the offensive end. Trade him to the clippers let favors start already. And figure the al situation out in the off season. If we get jordan i would say let al go if we get bulter or someone that doesnt play the 4 or 5 maybe try and resign him. Getting eric though with anther player would be a great trade

  38. L.K.Anderson says:

Why would anyone for any reason want Diop??? Big expiring contract?? Als Big expiring contract is much bigger..Jazz will not trade for junk.. Good for them.

  39. drew says:

Here’s an interesting take on it. The Clippers fans don’t want it to happen at all, here’s what they have to say. Just interesting to me. http://www.clipsnation.com/2013/2/17/3997990/rumor-millsap-for-bledsoe
