No excuse

When you are hired for a job it is because someone has recognised that you already have the sufficient knowledge to fulfilled your missions effectively. That’s how it happens in the real life: if you can’t do it, not being prepared enough or being able to do it in an hypothetic future cannot be accepted as excuses.

There is no excuse at being a “rookie coach”, or being in learning mode. It’s not an ”on-the-job-learning”  business. Ty Corbin is not here to learn. Ty Corbin is supposed to know. Ty Corbin is supposed to be a professional. Ty Corbin is here to head-coach an NBA team of playoff level,  bottom line. If he’s not yet at this level … or if he just can’t, he must be replaced by a professional.

He sat next to Sloan for how many years? I agree, if he doesn’t have what it takes (after watching the previous 2 games) then bring in McMillan.

Corbin has done a horrible job at utilizing our talent on this team and setting these players up to succeed. Bringing Howard back into the starting lineup has killed what Hayward had going. Go watch his (Howard’s) interview from yesterday – he’s a “ME FIRST” player and I can’t wait to have him OFF THIS TEAM!

So what is Nate McMillan doing?(Only slightly kidding)

In all seriousness that was the worst effort I have seen from a starting lineup. While it has only been two games that were on the road, this is a glimpse of what we will get if this same group continues.

Our depth in the front court means we have less talented shooters and scorers.

If we really want this team to grow and be competitive we need to build around players of strength: Favors and Hayward.

Millsap and Al have carried us these last two years but it is time to build for the future. I would look to trade Devin, Al, and Millsap this offseason for players that better suit Favors and Hayward.

I remember twenty plus years ago the same comments and name calling were made about a new head coach of the Jazz his name was Jerry Sloan…. He went on to the hall of fame and one of the most successful caoches ever in the NBA.
Let’s Give Ty Corbin a normal year with summer league and the ability to work with this young team during the off season,
Let’s give him a normal length trainging camp, with a couple of Player changes, we may all be supprised what this new young coach can do.
Since the day he took over as head coach until now, nothing has been normal.

  4. I would truly love that Browncoat!

  5. Guys…I agree Corbin must do a MUCH better job of coaching this team.

But, the Spurs are a REALLY REALLY REALLY REALLY good basketball team. Over the last 25 games of the regular season, this team isn’t just beating everyone they play…they are annihilating them. I think this team is better then Miami or OKC right now, and will probably win the title. If Phil Jackson himself were coaching this Jazz roster right now, we would still be down 0-2 in this series. The Spurs just have a much better roster of players right now, then we do.

The Jazz flat out quit at halftime last night. This was the first game all season where I can honestly say that this team stopped fighting. The players deserve as much blame as the coaching staff for last nights terrible loss.

My biggest gripe with Ty is that I think Favors should be getting 30-35 minutes a night on the court. The rest of it is just nitpicking…because we have no shot to win this series anyway. It really makes no difference whether we start Carroll or Howard, or how we pick our poison against the Spurs. They have so many weapons, and if you stop one player, another will just step up, and another, and another, etc…

Until I see Corbin coach a playoff series or two against some teams that we are on a relatively level playing field with (which we aren’t in this series), I can’t really pass a final verdict on the man.

  6. You are right Jason I did not expect to win this series but I expected fight and effort. If the team is not getting up for a playoff games there are issues with the players which needs to be addressed but also as a coach you have to be responsible to get in someone’s face every now and again and say what the hell are you doing?? You can not sit there and clap your hands and say come on guys lets do this. If they are not performing it is his job to motivate them to perform or sit their butt on the bench!

    Coaching 101 in my opinion..

  7. Your right Dallan…and I think this is where Corbin’s inexperience as a first time head coach really shows. He seems hesitant to ever rock the boat. I think he’s still feeling his way. Since he did manage to get this team six games over .500 during the regular season, and into the playoffs, I think he has earned at least one more season to prove himself (even if the Spurs sweep us in this series). One of the reasons that the Jazz have been consistently good over their franchise history, is stability. That means, unlike some teams like the Clippers, the Jazz don’t fire coaches left and right, and to major overhauls on the roster from season to season.

  8. It is not that i expected ty to have us winning this series though, its the fact that he plays Howard who has not earned the right to start, messed up the chemistry that got us to the finals, stifled Haywards hot streak, and made questionable lineup changes and substitutions that worries me. He does not play the hot hand on the court. He subs by the clock not by who is playing well!!!

  9. Mason…Sloan coached by the clock also (and had a preference for experienced players).

I wonder where Corbin gets those traits from? Hmmm…

  10. XxHawsxX says:

It doesn’t take a genius to see that Howard is a “chemistry-killer” and Favors should be playing 30+ a night!

Sloan wouldn’t put up with Howard and guarantee he’d get more use out of Favors.

Corbin should be running plays specifically for Hayward, Favors, and Burks. They are the future and probably the most gifted on this team at getting to the hoop and getting FT’s.

  11. KCJones says:

Sloan coaching by the clock is a falsehood. It only seemed that way because that’s what he did for so many years when he had old players in Malone and Stockton that he had to regulate minutes for. He was much more fluid in his substitutions with the younger groups that came after them.

Ty doesn’t have that worry, though. And the young guys are arguably better than the ‘vets’. And IMO its no argument that Favors IS the better matchup versus Duncan.

Yes, San Antonio is the better team. Are they so better that we lose an entire game by the midway point of the 2nd quarter? We have more talent than THAT and it’s Ty’s job to get results on the court. He left a moping, lazy, ineffective and detrimental Al Jefferson in the game when he should have sat his ass on the bench. Sloan WOULD have. Ty’s a pushover and the vets just know how to work him.

  12. @Jason I agree that Sloan did that as well but in his hay day he got in the face of people. Not towards the end cause I think he lost his fire a bit but he at least held players accountable

“@saltcityhoops @johnhollinger The Jazz will almost certainly try to bring Josh Howard back next season. O’Connor and Corbin rave about him.”

    Shoot me now!

  14. I bet they let Carrol walk as well! What a joke!! Then I bet they offer him a three year deal like they offered Raja and we will be stuck with hm for the next three years! He will be injured for most of that time and be a cancer the rest of the time!! He has been injured all ready twice this season why would it be any different next? Since he has proven he can not stay healthy?

  15. XxHawsxX says:

@Dallas – If that’s the case I’ll be furious. I hate this “we’re not rebuilding” BS from O’Connor. He tells us Jazz fans to be patient in an impatient world but he wants to re-sign a guy that’s past his prime?
