Posted by: Riley Gisseman on September 27th, 2012
The author's views are entirely his or her own and may not reflect the views of the Utah Jazz.I group teams into categories three of them are; Super Teams,a ton of talent but dont play like a Super Team, and Very Good teams
The Super teams:
Celtics
Heat
Lakers
Thunder
Spurs
A ton of talent but dont play like a super team
clips
knicks
nets
Very good teams
grizzlies
nuggets
pacers

I wanted to see if the Jazz fell in there so I figured out.

Interesting stats:
The Jazz played 26 games and won 12 of them (46 %)
They Played 12 of those at home and won 8 of them (66.67%)
They Played 14 on the road and only won 4 (28.5%)
^^^^ -Not bad though considering these are the best 10 teams
Their record against the finalists(OKC and MIAMI) was 2-2 with 2 on the road
They won the Memphis, Miami, Denver, and Brooklyn series and tied the Lakers series
They lost the Pacers, Thunder, Spurs, Celtics, and Knicks series
They lost 50% of these games by less than ten points

“They lost 50% of these games by less than ten points”
That means half of their losses could have gone either way too, they could have very well have won 73% of their games vs these
*them
@ Riley: I always look at that statistic, myself. I noticed that last year they lost a lot of close games to weaker teams than the “very good teams” as you put it. It’s funny because I always count all of those games and think, “what if they won half of those?” Well, they would have been at least a 3rd seed in the playoffs, giving them quite a few home court advantage, if they would’ve won half of the games in which they lost by 3 or fewer. I am not sure on this, but I thought that I counted at least 12 of those sort of losses. 6 more wins and they would’ve been a 3rd seed.
The funny thing is that you are looking at last yrs teams. We are a much different team this season. If it unfolds like I think it will, we are a top 6 team easily. Last year we were a team who played in the paint. Rarely had games that we made more than 4 perimeter shots, which most of the time came from different players. Funny thing is, other teams stopped guarding our perimeter and we got no better.
With this yrs additions we may have added what was needed to become that team who plays not only from the paint. With outside help, our bigs will have a lot easier time of it, not expending nearly as much energy. Some say that our additions wont do as well on this team, but thats just nuts. Look around and tell me who you guard, and that a team out there can really stop all 5 players on the floor. Tell me any of those teams who have a bench as deep as ours.
Guess we will see in several weeks, and most definately by Christmas, but its looking pretty good to me.
Celtics better than Lakers???OMG
@Guido
Haha did I say in a particular order? I was just saying which teams I thought were in that category, in no particular order
Wow!! Please pass the Kool-Aid….
I still see the Jazz as a fringe playoff team. Many teams in the West improved, and barring a big move (trading Al); how much improvement will we actually see?
Al plays 13% of available minutes (30+ of 240). Will the younger players get enough minutes to show their wares?
Signing 3-point shooters is great, but running the Al isolation offense doesn’t get them open looks.
The Jazz are an elite defensive team when Al is not on the floor.
With Marvin, Gordon, Foye, et al at the wings, will Burks get enough minutes to make an impact?
I’m optimistic that Favors will get increased minutes this year, but at who’s expense? Kanter? Bad idea, long-term!
Who is the Jazz go-to guy at the end of a close game? Al had a chance, Gordo was put in that role late in the season, Paul’s tried—all with mixed results.
I know some of this will be sorted out in training camp, but with the amount & significance of questions around this team; I have a hard time seeing them as any better than 7/8/9 in the West.
No matter the outcome, I’ll still be there!
