PEU Player Evaluation Unit

The author's views are entirely his or her own and may not reflect the views of the Utah Jazz.

I have put every stat on NBA.com and made what I call PEU (Player Evaluation Unit) to see how good a player is and wanted you guys to use it and comment more players that I haven’t done.

Also how to get the per minute is easy you just divide the total number of a stat in a year by the games he has played in, and then divide that number by his average minutes per game that year.  And that number should be long and start with 0.0 or 0.1.

All decimals round out at 2nd decimal spot or until first non-0 digit

1 TO per minute  = – 425 points

1 FG attempt per minute  = -50 points

1 FG make per minute = + 100 points

1 REB per minute  = + 100 points

1 PF per minute  = – 150 points

1 BLK per minute  = + 400points

1 STL per minute = + 450 points

1 AST per minute = + 115 points

1 FT attempt per minute  = -75 points

1 FT make per minute = + 100 points

1 point = 1 team win

Players Evaluated:

LeBron James 2011-2012 season           29.5

Derrick Favors 2011-2012 season         19. 9

Al Jefferson 2011-2012 season              17.25

Gordon Hayward 2011-2012 season      13.0

Awesome! It looks pretty good. Props for spending the time on it. There should be a way to compensate for team pace and for lesser players playing mostly bench competition though. If there is and I missed it then I apologize.

  2. Thanks a ton I hope that more people check this out and use it to tell me how good some players are.

As for playing against bench competition, I started thinking about it only a couple days ago and never thought that Earl Watson might be playing against worse players than Mo Williams, I’ll try to look into how to make a change to fix that. But for team pace, whatever team has the higher average PEU is the favorite for that matchup

That pretty cool and I definatley appreciate the amount of work that goes into creating something like this. How would you say it differs from John Hollingers PER though?

For reference it isn’t hard to just find total minutes played for the year at http://www.basketball-reference.com without having to go through the rigmarole you mentioned. The formula also seems to too severely punish players for getting to the line and missing. For instance, a player who gets to the line and hits 60% of his FT is being given negative points for that effort, but that generates 1.20 points per possession, a HUGE number. It really should be FTA -25 FTM +50 . I think the bar is also too high for FG as basically every guard in the league gets negative points for scoring based on the current formula. Adjust that as you see fit.

  5. Thanks I really appreciate it! I should have mentioned that I am still making it, and it is just a rough draft, I want the average when I’m done to be around 0 like par in golf. But I agree I probably will change some of the numbers. And I still have to rough out the edges because I did Mo and Marvin Williams and Mo was -2.O and Marvin was 28.5 which is 1 point below LeBron James.

It’s still good to try and do something different; I like the idea.
