Why do people want a new point guard? Part 2:
Posted by: Riley Gisseman on March 3rd, 2013
The author's views are entirely his or her own and may not reflect the views of the Utah Jazz. This is part two of a 2 part series asking the question”Do we really need a new point gaurd?”
The trade deadline has passed, but yet people still keep on talking about wanting a new PG. Why? Because over the the last month and a half or so, we have forgotten about how good Mo Williams was before his injury.
Mo’s stats are likely better, but, stats don’t always tell the whole story. On the other hand we could get someone who is younger, and has more potential to grow with the team. Lets look at some players who I think we should go after, vs Mo’s stats all together.
First we need to assess who everyone likes. Obviously we have enough room for three max contracts when this season ends. So we can try to go for anybody hard.
I really would like the Jazz to go hard after: 1.Brandon Jennings 2. Jeff Teague
Part 1.
Jeff Teague vs Mo Williams
As you see above when they both play 36 minutes Jeff averages more points, steals, free throws, and a better field goal percent. This would allow us to run a much less point guard oriented offense. Teague also shoots more shots per game within five feet of the hoop, and with the big men, we could easily just dump a pass off right then and there. Teague seems like the perfect point guard for this franchise. And to answer my question.
Yes if we can grab Teague or Jennings in the Off-Season than we would be better off with them than Mo, but if we can’t grab one of them, than, we could easily grow with Mo at the Point.

You cannot grow with a PG who isnt on the floor. The key was “we dont remember just how good Mo was, is, or whatever”. Shouldnt have to remember, I want to see it. If we cannot count on him to be on the floor leading the team, then he could be the best but it doesnt help us. I want a Stockton record games made type player, not a Boozer who is out for a hang nail. 8.5 mil a year for 24 games just sucks. Worse yet, are the back ups who cannot fill in for him while he is gone.
There is no circumstance where I’d want the Jazz to go after Brandon Jennings.
what Patrick said
Brandon Jennings has publicly talked trash on Utah. He has also publicly stated that he refuses to play for a small market team. He has tarked trash on the team and town he plays for. He is a prima donna whit a bad attitude. And he’s a mediocre player.
He is not a point guard. He is a shooting guard, and is extremely inefficienct. Jeff Teague is better than Mo Williams, but neither one of them is a true point guard.
Agree with Patrick! Mo’s good, but he is always hurt. That is why I would love him at back-up pg. He could teach as well as limiting time to get hurt. I’m also getting sick of the “true pg” statement. Its old school and there really is only a few of them left in the league. The pg spot has evolved to a more rounded position. Just cause a guy scores more doesnt mean he is not a good pg. In this fast paced scoring league, you need all positions capable of scoring as well as passing. Ill take Russell Westbrook anyday!!
Riley, will you do another one of these comparisons between the best of the 3 you mentioned (Mo, Teague, Jennings) and Jarrett Jack?
I will try to one more, if I can make out time, in the next week, so be expecting of me.
And Thanks for the Suggestion!
Thank you
