Why do people want another PG? Part 1
Posted by: Riley Gisseman on February 23rd, 2013
The author's views are entirely his or her own and may not reflect the views of the Utah Jazz. This is Part 1 of a 3 part series which I will write likely over 3 days.
The trade deadline has passed, but yet people still keep on talking about wanting a new PG. Why? Because over the the last month and a half or so, we have forgotten about how good Mo Williams was before his injury.
Mo’s stats are likely better, but, stats don’t always tell the whole story. On the other hand we could get someone who is younger, and has more potential to grow with the team. Lets look at some players who I think we should go after, vs Mo’s stats all together.
First we need to assess who everyone likes. Obviously we have enough room for three max contracts when this season ends. So we can try to go for anybody hard.
I really would like the Jazz to go hard after: 1.Brandon Jennings 2.Tyreke Evans 3. Jeff Teague
Part 1.
Brandon Jennings vs Mo Williams
As you can see, Brandon scores more points in a season typically, but makes a lower percent of his shots. He also doesn’t pass the ball as well, but who does he have to pass to? Monta Ellis is one, but who else? Ersan Illyasova? Sam Dalembert? Drew Gooden? Mike Dunleavy? While Mo can pass to Millsap, Jefferson, Hayward, Burks, Foye, and even Kanter, or Favors. If Jennings had these options he would be getting at least 2 more assists per game. Jennings is also young enough to grow with the team. The downside is mainly that we would likely have to give him a Max Contract, and even then it would be hard to bring him to Utah.

The only guy I see that is worth a max contract your not going after. Chris Paul. Not saying we get him, but you would be crazy not to even try.
Anyone who matches up with Mo, should get Mo’s salary, 8 mil, not max contract.
Sorry but I wouldn’t want either of those guys running the point as a starter. Keep Mo, draft T Burke
Or pick up Jarrett Jack. He is better than those 3 in most categories besides 3pt % and plays 5-10 less mpg
Mo is fine… when he’s not injured.
The problem is, he’s injured ALL the time!
In fact, in his 11-year career, he’s played 70 or more games only twice.
We definitely need somebody more dependable than that — ESPECIALLY when the alternatives are freaking Tinsley and Watson.
So yes, without a doubt the Jazz need a new PG.
I just think they need s good young PG to grow with the other guys
Jennings wants to be in a big market. I would live Evans but he is a ball hog. But I wonder a backcourt of Evans, Burks, Frontcourt Hayward, Favors, Kanter. Pretty good. With Mo being out so much and getting older I wonder if he would only be worth five mill per year. He has missed quite a few games this year.. Hawks would love AL. He would be closer to his home too. Get in a three way to somehow get Teague.. Whatever the case do not resign Watson/Tinsley.
do we all forget that burks is lighting it up right now? personally i think he is our future point.
If Burks is our future on pg???
Please people tell me what we do on sg?? Im really sick of Foye, cmn 0-5? my option is put Hayward in that point, and now.
Look at the games started and you know all you need to know. Someone made the call on here before the season started about his injuries and the Jazz lack of depth.
the games that we have lost other then houston have been really close and if the jazz had pointguards who would score then most the games we would have won…
Burks is not a PG and the jazz dont want him to be he is the SG the wing players of the jazz are not like any other team all 3 guys can bring the ball up the court and create shots for other teammates
You ask why we want a PG. Lets look at something. Most people would say that Watson and Tinsley would be good 3 PG’s, and can compete as the 2nd PG, but most would agree that they arened starting PGs. Though Burks has done as well or better at situations than those two, no one would say that he is a solid PG at this time. If we agree on that, here is the scary thing.
Mo williams, though he is pretty good, maybe he isnt as good as most think. Mo Williams played 28 games before the injury and we were 14 – 14 with him, and since then we have been 17 – 11 since he has been out. Efficiency numbers have been similar. I know it was a tougher schedule when Mo was in, but that should still be eye opening.
Burks is a combo guard. Therefore he is a point guard.. And he is better than two of the three who claim to be point guards…
