Adam Morrison spot up shooter?
Posted by: Jake on July 23rd, 2012
The author's views are entirely his or her own and may not reflect the views of the Utah Jazz.I was totally against this idea, but I realized after watching the summer league that this guy was plenty capable of playing well and really did demand a dedicated defender to stay on him at all times when sitting out on the perimeter which allowed for much easier dribble penetration and opening up the floor. When the offense ran the offense the right way and passed the ball well he was able to be found ussually wide open for easy shots.
I only would consider this because I don’t think he is under contract and we need players that we can park on the wing or in the corner to rain 3’s. He could possibly do this. Low risk high reward player if we can get him to play the right type of game and let the offense come to him. He tries way to hard to try and prove himself and just needs to know he isn’t trying to take over a game, just do his part.
Thoughts? Again I don’t want to hear from a bunch of people saying this is stupid cause it’s not (in theory) He did very will in the summer league. I just want to hear ideas not a bunch of attacks. Thanks

Jake has the best ideas. We should bring back Morris Almond, too. What a scoring threat! And Ostertag of course, for ‘real’ screens.
KC youre a complete tool as you can tell knowone likes you on here anyway so do me a favor and don’t post on my posts. You obviously think we can find a good spot up shooter somewhere out of thin air. You obviously didn’t watch him in summer league because I was like you and would have thought it was a terrible idea as well, but he put the ball in the basket. You obviously don’t understand low risk high reward since he would cost us nothing. You would probably want to keep Raja and CJ around instaed at over a combined cost of over 7 mill all but to see them on the bench. If Morrison didn’t work out which is very possible then we had very little cost associated with him. Almond was brought on to be a scorer not a spot up shooter that sits on the wing or in the corner so its not even close to compare the two. Why don’t you educate yourself before attacking people… I just call it like I see it and Morrison shot the ball very well in summer league… There is no denying that.
Jake, you are asking for it. Don’t you realize that yet? Just post what you want, try to make your arguments sound, and stand by what you say. We all have the right to reply in any manner we want. People are going to disagree just take it like a man, not a mangina. Stop being so emotionally sensitive to naysayers.
Boys, boys!
I don’t think you’ll see anyplace where Adam can stick.
He’s probably ready to stick a fork in and see if he’s done.
Jazzaholic
Do you really think Morrison could step in and be that knock down shooter not trying to be rude just wondering?
Courtney Lee was available. I’d take him over Morrison anyday.
Your buttons are just too easy to push lol.
You are just posting that the Jazz should sign Adam Morrison, you realize that, right? And then you ask to have no one disagree with you. Sorry, I disagree. A good shooting performance in Summer League does not an NBA player make. Morris Almond was the greatest D-League player to ever live. But he was NOT an NBA player. Yeah, Morrison could work out, but who’s minutes are you giving him to test that out?
We DO need a good 3-pt shooter though, so at least you’re on the right track there.
I’m not trying to be offensive, but I DO think that sometimes we Jazz fans see a player have a decent stretch, and suddenly we think that player is the answer. We’ve seen it with Dragic, Lowry, Morrison, etc…
I think Morrison is a good shooter, but I also wonder about his mental stability because of his past. Plus he looks like Michael Jackson and that freaks me out.
If Morrison was a good shooter, we would probably want to add him. Unfortunately he’s a career 33% shooter from deep and only 37% from the field overall! Among players to have played at least 150 NBA games, Morrison is in the bottom 1% of Win Shares per minute. It’s entirely possible he is the worst NBA player in the last 20 years. Don’t let his spotty scoring in two summer leagues and half an NBDL season convince you that he’s anything close to an NBA player. For what it’s worth he was also only 128-348 (36%) shooting threes in college, and that was with a line multiple feet closer than the NBA line.
This is twice now that the most ridiculous idea in basketball history has been posted on the UJ360 blogs. Let’s do a bit better with our posts, ladies and gents.
Actually Jake, the people that insult your ideas are pretty well regarded on this forum. I certainly enjoy reading KC’s posts a lot more than I do yours.
It’s not that people don’t like you, It’s just that your ideas are terrible.
lol… I guess I was the only one watching summer league. I could easily go without Morrison which is why the heading had a ?… in other words that means Adam morrison for a spot up shooter? Then some points that would bring up a conversation about it. He would cost us nothing… There are no other spot up shooters that are going to be availalbe and if he doesn’t work out we lose what? No trades for him and maybe a league minimum… I don’t know what he would get but it wouldn’t be much… His past play was coming off the banch with other second units that were trying to get there own shot just like him. He looked he forced everything. We already have to many wing players as it is, Corrol will be fighting for time if Burks gets it all together so when does Morrison make it in the game? Only if we play a certain style that fits a spot up shooter. Again I said park him in the corner or on the wing. He made defense stay on him which made dribble penetration easy and then the ball kicked back out to him and he nailed the shot. Somethin CJ, Bell, Howard couldn’t do all at higher costs or not even being in the game cause of injories. So we had players we were paying that weren’t even playing and everyone is arguing over a terrible idea in looking at another player that would probably not play unless he surprised us…. Kind of like this Tinsley guy we got for the 3 PG and all the sudden earned his spot as the backup and did a fine job after being considered to be washed up. Sometimes people argue just to argue
Fact is we just need some spot up shooter and Korver and others are gone. Why not try something? We’ve been surprised many times with 2nd round picks that turn out to be big for us and so you never know.
AGAIN! I don’t care if you disagree… I’m sensitive about that… its the name calling and being children because someone comes up with an idea that really doesn’t impact us or isn’t that important anyway… I mean we basically have our roster, its not like were talking about a blpckbuster trade here… It’s the 13-14 guy on the roster… those always maybe type players… maybe they work and we’re surprised maybe they suck… we have long list of those that didn’t work, and most of them don’t.
@ Kevin
I agree we all do jump to conclusions, but again we’re not talking about an all-star just trying to round off the roster with some other potential. Thats all we have to go by with players that are coming deep off the bench… Morrison could be that.
You know I see one thing that really was surprising… I was blown away with Jackson and Diaw’s play for the spurs last year… They both increased their game big time under POP. Getting a player into a better system and coaching can make a difference. <aybe not for some, maybe not for Morrison, but all I was saying is he looked good and stretched the floor… that is the only other thing we can really do right now with our Roster. We aren't looking for a starter spot up shooter to take away Marvin or Gordon out of starting or even Burks, so we're talking about a bench player that also hits the 3 really well, well Jones is under contract (hey maybe Miami will send us Jones for Bell lol, just a thought) Korver is gone, Rush (I don't know that he's a spot up shooter but he's good (golden State has made it clear theyre matching) who else can we get? It wouldn't make sense to spend a lot on a shooter that gets burried or limited minutes… So why not try the guy… What if we got him for league minimum? Ah well, its not a big difference maker I'm sure but again… You never know
This is an internet forum so no one here should be surprised as to what is posted and debated. Anyone in the world can have a written opinion posted to the world! Very scary.
We all tend to judge people negatively when their posts are grammatically incorrect, or written on a thought process pace that is off ours. Context is always taken from it’s intended form.
When it get’s annoying is when things turn into a pissing match. And that’s all I have to say about any of that. And yes I started that sentence with and. And now I bid this matter adieu.
As far as signing Morrison I say no on all accounts but not because of him as a player really. My reasoning is this: Once the teams future materialized ( the young core four) I realized that we can’t just try to go get 1 or even 2 more players with star potential and develop them along with the 4 we already have.
We only have so many coaches and so many hours to dedicate to the development of Derrick Favors, Gordon Hayward, Alec Burks, and Enes Kanter. How we develop them determines who they become in this league. We have not even one Lebron/Durant type that is ready for stardom out the gate. So the next 2-3 years are some of the more if not most important years our franchise history.
Now to connect this back to Mr. Adam Morrison. Who we surround our 4 youngsters with plays huge dividends to their development. So when I think of adding someone to our squad I am much more picky than I was with previous teams. We only want/need players who are sane (vastly underrated quality in the world these days)/passionate/responsible/supportive/courageous. Note that I am generalizing.
Now I am not saying Adam Morrison doesn’t have some of those. I don’t know him. What I do know is that he sobbed like a newborn child flailing on the hardwood after an NCAA loss, I do know that he was selected 3rd and never lived up to any of the expectations placed upon him, I do know that he was stuffed away on the bench by two NBA organizations.
Those can be called risk factors when evaluating him. I don’t think I’d want someone like that around our kids 24/7. I’m not saying he is crazy or evil, I wouldn’t be surprised if he is a good guy. Just not the type I want our young talents listening to on the bench or in the locker room or wherever.
I want them to be influenced by winners with good character. (asking a lot I know)
This post became long winded but I feel we don’t look at this aspect as fans enough.
Well, that is an interesting idea. Many of us remembers the promise of Morrison had coming out of college and he was a complete flop. Now do we want to remember that flop or some team gives him a chance. I am not saying that the Jazz should but I did watch those summer league games. Morrison was a lot more selective on his shots, hit a very high % of them. I did not notice how his defense was. I think since he played on the Clippers team they will have the first option to pick him up. Does anyone know that rule for sure. Then if they do not pick him up then the other 29 teams has an option to pick him up. But I think he did show well but I was thinking that he should cut his hair and look like a normal human.
Good response Matt… No argument here. Thanks for your thoughts!
No question influence is big.. Some pull others up and some pull them down. Morrisson could be a downer… I have no idea, just judging his court time. I also agree that we already have the time on the court pretty filled up so Morrisson is a guy you put in for certain situations to stretch the floor when All is getting doubled or for dribble penetration, but only if we have an injury, foul troubles or something keeping burks, hayward or possibly Markin out of the game, so its someone that was never going to be a large impact anyway… Just thought He could fit a roll which was when we had a defense clapsing and we had a corner and wing wating for the kick out. Didn;t want to spend 5 extra mill a year for that guy to sit mostly on the bench like korver, so he seemed like a possibility. I never thought Morrison would be seen again, but he made a strong showing at summer league, made me have to think twice. Oh and sorry for the grammer… I don’t care to get it perfect I just balst away to make it quick
silverwolf… I was thinking the same thing, his hair was killing me… He probably would have played better all the way around if he didn’t stop tucking it behind his ears every 2 seconds… If I was the coach I would have shaven that Kurt Cobain looking garbage off his head before he put on a jersey
lol
Morrison is a four or five year vet playing with mostly brand new rookies and a lot of wantabees. Of course he should outplay them. But no one will sign him cause he is still a bust (with a ring he got while with the Lakers.)
I heard he was playing summer league to try and revive his NBA career. I didnt watch any other summer league games but the jazz. whos summer team did he play on? that being said: this is a decent idea. incase G-man, Burks, Marvin or Carroll get hurt. Im not sure how his defense would fit in though.
Oh and since Morrison is already know as a flop there really isn’t anywhere to go but up for the guy, if he fails again its not a surprise, but the guy did shoot the lights out of the ball, defense was neither here nor there, they never had him guard anyone difficult, and he did however rebound the ball. I think he had like 5 rebounds a game. He was easily in the top 10% of the summer league players and was many of the games high scorer. I wouldn’t have even mentioned him in the slightest had he not proven he’s got game, but he obviously does. We don’t need a starter or a star, we need a roll player for certain situations to step out and be ready. What was interesting to me was how he made the shots off the elbow like he was curling off a screen, but also with a sidways fade. We actually need that in our offense. But again, ne’s not the answer for us making the next step, just another person to add that would be better than CJ, Bell or Howard shooting like garbage from the perimeter…
Cheytown… He played for the clippers.
LK… I don’t think the number of years should make a massive difference… I actually think the NBA can kill your confidence by getting burried on the bench. We know he played well at one point in his career, I think he might finally be getting to that point where the past could be behind him and he isn’t trying to live up to a 3rd pick but now realizing he has to play the right way to have a JOB in this league. Big difference between desperation and guaranteed contract.
Oh by the way, I only brought up morrison because I do think eveyone else is looking past him. If there was a player that did what he did that wasn’t named Morrison he would be on most teams radars and snagged up quickly
I will give a no comment on this post. However Jake I think you should continue to post your ideas. Lets not take ourselves too seriously here anybody. This is a jazz website designed for fans to voice and discuss their opinions. That is what Jake is doing. He isnt trolling like jazzman or the other annoying guy. This is not a profession for any of us. This is a hobby. This is a place where we can play GM like little kids do. Your opinions may not be shared by the large majority but you are still entitled to post that on this site. Just be prepared for the criticism. And take it easy on people that disagree with you. Reason and fact are the better argument than personal attacks.
A life of hard knocks can change your behavior. Maybe that is what is happening to Morrison. He did kind of blow the chances he had when on a team. He did change his looks some. I do think that a team will give him a chance and if he blows it again we can all say, wow, glad we did not pick him up but if he goes on to succed then we all could be hitting our own head and asking why we did not pick him up. Is that not true. I think he does need to change his appearance some so the interviewer can get pass his appearance to head what he is saying. I do wish him the very best.
I agree with you JRN, a place to offer our ideas and opinions. For me it is fun to read your comments and then type my own comments. Lets keep it fun.
agreed JRN
From what I have read about Murphy, he could be the shooter we want. Not sure if he is designated as a spot up shooter though
disco… Lets hope thats the case. That would be awesome to have that guy already. We need someonewho can hit that 3 point shot at 44%+
