No Trades… Really?
Posted by: Jakobius on February 21st, 2013
The author's views are entirely his or her own and may not reflect the views of the Utah Jazz.I am totally shocked that the Jazz didn’t make any trades before the deadline. With all of the talk about Jefferson/Millsap, I was sure something would happen. I guess I’m feeling cautiously optimistic about the what the Jazz will be able to do in the off season with their cap space. Will Dennis Lindsey be able to make good enough moves to justify no trades?

What this means, people, is that Paul is leaving for wherever the money is and we’re re-signing Al, probably for way too much and way too many years, in the offseason, adn we’re STILL missing a good young PG.
I think we can all relax now that we know we don’t have to stress about the 2nd round of the playoffs this year. Cap Space is AWESOME when you are a team that players want to play for. I always pretended that NBA guys liked Utah but the reality is that we are on no one’s radar. We used to create some buzz because players respected our Hall of Fame coach and top 2 PG. Now, there isn’t a draw anymore.
I love most players on this roster. I am very happy we still have Millsap. But I still prefer winning over any one player and this team simply is not a winning roster. At least not in the sense that we can make a run in the playoffs. I think getting Bledsoe was an awesome opportunity that would have filled one of our glaring weaknesses. I understand that we would have had to give up a lot to get him, but doesn’t O’Connor always brag about how he has stockpiled “assets”? We ALWAYS are looking to the future. I think right now I am looking at the past instead, and therefore I see nothing coming that will justify standing pat at a crucial trade deadline.
If we miss the playoffs because we didn’t make a trade then a change in the front office needs to be made.I personally think that sap or Big Al should have been traded because with a young upcoming Derek Favors we can’t afford to keep Jefferson or Milsap past the off-season
CP3 to the Jazz!!!!!! Ya right!
I feel like my soul got kicked in jewels! Now we are about at least 4 years away from championship!
I hate to admit this but looks like we have to wait around for injuries to help is out again….
I wished we played Clippers before deadline than GSW, maybe reality would have set in instead of fools gold with Al and Watson.
Jazz are resigning Mo and Al and probably Watson.
I am somehwat suprised as well although I am not sure that this means either of the things KC said are likely to happen. On one hand the trade market was really pretty dry this year compared to Utahs needs, the Bledsoe deal was promising but didnt really address the Clippers needs, it was a stale market (hence the crappy deals that did go down, Josh Smith stayed put for hells sake)
On the flip side you run the risk of letting your homegrown talent walk leaving you empty handed. I had a feeling that Utah would stand pat because looking at their past it has been much more of their MO.
While I’m not sure who Utah will pursuade to come this offseason, money is king in profesional sports, and frankly who thought the Jazz would aquire Al Jefferson or sign Carlos Boozer in the past, no one really. While I do think the Jazz could possibly regret not making a move, would anyone here be more happy if they had taken a bad deal that cost us young players like Burks or gave us burdensome contracts?
As a side note I think Utahs favorable schedule fooled them into thinking this team is better than it really is. If we kept the same schedule but flipped our difficult stretch with our recent cake home schedule, it would have put more pressure on the Jazz.
I think the front office would have felt more pressure to move a player if they had just gone 15-17, rather than their record of 16-7 since.
Well, i think we’ve learned the FO values flexibility over everything. Really the only thing that frustrates me is the Maynor to Portland deal, we easily couldve made that happen and dont understand why we didn’t
Who knows tho, maybe next year a player like bledsoe is still available and the Clips need to dump him or maybe there is a big draft day trade, we will see.
@Van – Money IS King. But here’s the problem. There’s a salary cap. Real superstars will ALL make max money no matter where they play. So the decision for superstars is NOT where the money is, it’s where the club life is or the marketing opportunities are best, or the weather is nicest.
Here’s how we maybe rank to an NBA player in those areas:
SLC Club Life: -2/10
SLC Marketing Opportunies: 3/10
SLC Weather during season: 2/10
So. Superstars are out. They aren’t coming here as free agents. Ever. All-Stars are paid so near max these days that it’s pretty much the same thing.
SO. Who can the Jazz get with their cap space? Mediocre, overpaid vets, the worst money-to-value players in the NBA! An overpaid Carlos Boozer. An overpaid Memo Okur. A slightly overpaid backup PG who wants a chance at proving he can be a starting PG.
NONE of those are changing the chances of the Jazz in the post-season. You HAVE to take SOME risk at SOME point along the way to be anything more than mediocre. I’m not sure the Jazz FO have the balls to do it. It was ballsy to trade D-Will for Favors and pick (Kanter), but what’s NOT ballsy is hiring a coach who barely plays those guys and then filling your team full of veterans who’s ceiling isn’t probably even an 8th seed (we’re only better because of the young guys that come off the bench) when said coach is known to screw young promising players for veterans.
Anyway, I HAVE seen a trend of teams just re-signing big men you think they aren’t going to in order to keep the payroll at the level they want as well as give them more time to find the right trade. Denver did it with Nene. Re-signed him, then traded him to Washington. The Jazz will probably do this too. What can backfire tho is if no one will trade you value back for him after you re-sign him. Then your stuck with him, strapped down by his salary, and he’s playing on your team in front of your two #3 picks and you look like a complete Moron owner and GM.
On an optimistic sidenote, who needs a PG when you just throw the ball in to Al every play?
I wanted Maynor as well. They got him for almost nothing. Blazers just like Jazz players. I think the Jazz don’t feel like Maynor will ever be much more than a bench player. One thing about it everyone has to live with the decisions of the FO and not their own ideas. Bledsoe will be eaiser to obtain once CP3 signs on the dotted like. Maybe a S&T will AL will do it. On to the playoff push. By the way kobe is guarenteeing Fakers will make the playoffs.
The only rumour that the Jazz were involved in that sounded like it had any truth in it was the Millsap/Bledsoe deal, but I didn’t see how that really suited the Clippers, until Burks was said to be included in the deal. Then it seemed to be a trade that suited the Clippers if the Jazz were desperate enough to go for it. Burks has really come on to a game in recent weeks,, he has developed a jump shot that he didn’t look capable of, even shooting from 3 and is able to hold the point on at least a part time basis, and he has shown that he is ready to match up to his potential. Losing Burks and Millsap to acquire Bledsoe was a little rich. Bledsoe has promise yes, but he hasn’t shown that he is anything more than backup at this point. Who is to say he going to be anything better than Burks.
I am frustrated the Jazz couldn’t find a deal, but considering the players that were available I’m not surprised. There was nothing out there that suggested that the Jazz were going to improve the team. As Jazz fans we like to whine about the failings of some of our players but then expect teams to offer up something for those same players, but there is no point making deals that make you worse.
Quick question where is burks goons play when mo comes back mo starts then Watson tinsley Carroll and burks are screwed I hope they leave and get a ring
@KC you have to remember the most important thing to FOs, money. We have plenty of that coupled with the winning atmosphere makes Utah a top 10 place this offseason. We aren’t pulling any superstars, but I wouldn’t say we have to settle for fodder.
Look at it this way. Now management can take a good look at Al and Paul to make a better decision on who to keep next year.
Another positive is we can truly judge Corbin now. He doesn’t have to play guys to showcase them, so if he is really a solid coach like I believe, his rotations will be adjusted.
Side note on Bledsoe: couple weeks back a report came out that he had an attitude problem on occasion. And if you take a good look at his game, he is really no better at pg than Burks. Both are 2’s given pg duties.
I can’t believe that at least minor deal wasn’t done! I would have traded Murphy, carroll, watson, or tinsley, and a draft pick for maynor. With all this flexibility nothing was done. I don’t know if anyone else caught the comment that Dennis Lindsay had made during the warriors game about how he is tired about hearing about the core 4 and that how we have fifteen guys on the roster that they love. If you have love for all fifteen guys where is raja bell at. Not a whole lot of love for him. When I heard him say that I lost faith Dennis.
For some reason our coaches think carrol is a baller. He should be an 8th or 9th man off the bench. There is no way he is a regular contender with playing time on a championship team.. Since Dwill caused sloan to retire we have gone backwards… If you wanna fix this problem let sap n jeff go BRING BACK SLOAN and he will nningget a real winning team in here… Corbin is garbage.. BRING BACK SLOAN
Lk, agree with everything you said. I thought the same thing about bledsoe being more available next year once CP3 is resigned. Also, nothing happened so we have to let it be and understand this is going to be the team to get us to the playoffs. We have the talent and players to make it happen, so basically its up to Coach Corbin now…
haha
@Uottakno, what’s he gonna say, ‘there are 12 players I love and 3 that I don’t'… Also, what he said about the core 4 is that he didn’t like the name, because it kind of ’separates’ them from the rest of the team, and I think that was appropriate.
Let’s be realistic here, if a deal didn’t come that really made us better would you pull it off anyway? To throw out Burks just to make the Millsap for Bledsoe trade happen is plain nuts. We’re just starting to see what we can get from him.
Former Jazzman Ronnie Brewer was traded to the Thunder to replace former Jazzman Eric Maynor who was traded to the Blazers to replace the then waived former Jazzman Ronnie Price..
@Lk….. Wow we better make a splash in free agency. Because we just got robbed for nothing. Booz n okur took the money in 05. We better havr a plan for another good signing this year. Lindsie wants to run us like the spurs but we dont have a superstar… You have to move the whels a little better.
@ Jamezz thanks for clearing that up. I was trying to remember the quote and didn’t get the wording right. Just wondering why he said 15 guys instead of 14 because raja is worthless to us so why include him as part of the team?
I don’t feel all is lost because our team has talent coming out there ears. I am however confused of the direction the team is going but I guess we find out more of that in the off-season. Any chances we release bell and pick up price? Just had to throw that one out there.
Only one thing is for sure. No Toxic Raja next year..
No Raja, but I’m afraid the Jazz will re-sign Al.
I hope the season ticket renewal packet comes with a ‘No Al’ guarantee. If he’s back, I don’t want them…
I want to enjoy the game experience. The ESA comes alive in the second quarter when the kids are playing!
And our chemistry will continue to be improving and amazing when people come back from injuries? really???? WTF Linsey? “Were not a championship calibur team but maybe 2nd rnd playoff”??? We are !@#$% shooting for 2nd rnd playoffs?!!! grow some balls!!! this roster should have been reduced to give time to C4 and dont act like C4 shouldnt be a term to be talked about. Get real Linsey
