C.J. Miles: Mr inconsistency

The author's views are entirely his or her own and may not reflect the views of the Utah Jazz.

Inconsistency is probably the thing that drives me the craziest about the Jazz bench.  And if you’re a Jazz fan, you can’t say the word “inconsistency”, without thinking about C.J. Miles.  The two words are more synonymous than politicians and corruption, or David Stern and Satan.  If you don’t believe me, look at his stats game by game this year.  http://www.nba.com/playerfile/cj_miles/game_by_game_stats.html

C.J. Miles is way to inconsistent to be able to rely on him on a regular basis.  Sure his stats may be improving this year, (I am just assuming this.  I’m too lazy to actually check.)  but every Jazz fan needs to ask themselves if Miles is really the guy we want as our sixth man.  Has he reached the climax of his career already?  It seems  like he is not going to improve his game at this point of his career.  He is a 5 year pro VETERAN.  I no longer consider him this young hot shot who, with good coaching and the right amount playing time, can become a star in this league.  Those hopes are done!

Pull the plug on Project C.J. and focus more on developing a guy who actually has POTENTIAL!  His name is Gordon Hayward.

Now, I would like nothing more but for Miles to get traded by the deadline, but realistically speaking, it’s not gonna happen.  I don’t see us getting anything valuable for him in the market this year.  We’re just gonna see him chuck up 3 point shot after 3 point shot and either watch it touch nothing but net, or nothing but air.

He is 2nd in Sixth Man of the Year, right behind Jason Terry. Who do you want for Miles? Since you want a trade for him.

  2. ljnapoli says:

He is still only 23. That is the same age as players drafted in the 2010 draft! So I can’t agree with you saying he has reached the climax of his career already..

  3. Tyler W says:

I also dont think you can call him inconsistent this year, his numbers go up as his minutes go. He gets into a rhythm and does much better the longer he plays. Just as everybody, cant expect him to play well with 10 min played. And he has not “Peaked” guarantee that.

  4. Shockwave says:

    I think he’s pretty good.

CJ could make better decisions at times but he can make his own shot, scores in bunches and is a good distributor when he wants to be. He’s made some really nice passes under the hoop. The guy is 4th in scoring on the team, coming off the bench. He has a great attitude and is a team player. As mentioned above, CJ is only 23 and has a bright future.

    He’s not getting traded.

  5. Fan says:

CJ is a good player and important to the Jazz but he can be somewhat inconsistant. I wondered if he was still a little sick in the last two games. I doubt he had the actual “flu” but a simple virus can last a long time.

  6. Henri says:

@ tyler: his numbers go up with his playing time just because when he has an off night, Sloan lowers his playing time to avoid losing the game.

Let’s be realistic: if it doesn’t clic after 5 years, it won’t clic.

CJ is the type of player that cannot develop more in the NBA. His ups and downs, despite he is 23 and might be able to play 100% every night (sorry the contradict the age argument), are the evidence of his lack of aptitude to play 82 + X games in 6 months. Plain and simple.

He would fit perfectly in a european team, playing the half of the time he is playing right now in a year, and being the star of the team. And making money.

He has a bright future (I would have had a bright future too with all this M$ earned at 23) … but not in the NBA.

  7. Kyler Herdt says:

CJ has true potential. He can shoot of the dribble, go the the hole strong. Run the fast break, pass, shoot the three and DUNK. This guy needs more playing time! I think he should play more with D Will and the starting unit and bring AK and Hayward off the bench. The other guy I want to see get more playing time is Ronnie Price; he always makes positive contributions to our team when he plays. I wouldn’t mind seeing his minutes go up for an over used Raja Bell. (Sorry Raja, I love ya) Everyone including D Will is doom and gloom right now about the Jazz but we are a game out of 3rd place in the West! Look at our schedule for the next month! I see us going as high as 2nd in the West. Dallas may hang on but I am anxous to see how they are without Butler.

  8. Yaggi says:

The thing with CJ is, his talent level is so high, people expect him to be an all-star. And when he doesn’t produce like an all-star, it’s time to throw him under the bus. The thing you need to realize is this, he came out of HIGH SCHOOL. Players who come out of high school & excel right away are few and far in between. I can only think of two off the top of my head. K-G, & Lebron. Even Kobe sucked his first two years. What if LA had said, “this kid is done progressing, time to trade him.” It would have been the stupidest move in sports history. Most players who come into the league need a couple of years to really learn how to play in the NBA, and those are the kids who play college ball. CJ is just starting to show some serious ability. He had no college experience. He’s finally learned how to play in the NBA, and is learning how to be consistently successful in the Jazz offense. Now, I’m not saying he’s a Kobe type player. But I personally think he’s finally just starting to play successfully, and to get rid of him now would be a waste of time & money that the Jazz have INVESTED into his progress. An investment takes time. If we got rid of CJ right now, I can guarantee he would continue to get better, and he would roll into town and destroy us one night, and then everyone would say, “Why in the hell did we get rid of this guy?” Is this what everyone wants? If so, (here comes some sarcasm, brace yourself), I hear the Jazz are taking applications. Maybe you can get hired on as KOC’s personal assistant and whisper all of your profound wisdom, based on such extensive personal experience of playing in the NBA, into his ear. And then finally we can get rid of CJ once and for all. Then we would win a championship. That would be beautiful.

  9. JC says:

a couple of notes on CJ:
    1) CJ hasn’t had more than 3 games in a row scoring in double figures.

    2) The only game where he HAS NOT scored in double digits AND shot the ball better than 35%’ish is a 2/4 FG performance at Orlando.

  10. James Taylor says:

I agree that CJ is very inconsistent. But, changes do need to be made. I’m not sure whether its trading CJ or AK, but if we want to take the next step we do need more production out of one if not both of them. Also, a couple exciting plays does NOT make up for the turnovers and bad shots that Ronnie Price takes nightly. Yes, he brings evergy, but more time for a small shooting guard…no way.

  11. LKA says:

I would agree CJ is a lot better but he is still either hot or cold. I would say if the Jazz can package CJ to get like a Gerald Wallace then I would pull the trigger.

  12. Andrew says:

Statistically Players hit there peak at about 26, since Miles isn’t 26 yet he will still improve. He’s 2nd in 6th man of the year race only behind J. Terry. There’s no one else that’ll bring what CJ brings. He’s still improving, but please tell me who you’d want for him…

  13. Kade Jones says:

CJ is horrible defensively and he’s too inconsistent. I don’t care if he’s 23, he’s been in the league and Jerry’s system for 5 years now, he’s got to be better. I’m pulling for CJ but if he doesn’t pick it up he’s going to be losing his minutes to Gordon, who is not as strong as he needs to be but at least he puts forth an effort on D.

  14. @Yaggi: Yes, Kobe wasn’t very good the first TWO years of his career, not his first five. Sometimes teams have to know when an investment hasn’t worked out. I’m not saying Miles is an awful player or that he is a bad guy, he’s just too inconsistent.

I like the sarcasm. Genius humor!

  15. Michael says:

Well its time to do what every other NBA team does, start holding the coaching staff accountable. Why you think Sloan is still with the Jazz, cause the Management does not care, though they want you to think they do. They are happy with the mediocrity of the Jazz. Any other NBA team, Sloan would of been long gone….Those who favor Sloan, guess what, your just like Jazz management, happy with the way things are and deeply do not want to see the Jazz succeed. The league is far different now then the Stockton-Malone days and well, Sloan is not a good fit for the way this team is structured.

  16. ******************** For the record. It’s quite difficult to be consistent each night when you don’t know whether you are going to see 8, 19, or 30 minutes.

its not like paul or dwill, who know they are going to get 30+ each night.

  17. wait?????????? cj is only behind terry in 6moy? Where in the world is ginobili, he’s like top ten in mvp..

  18. Landon J says:

I AGREE WITH YOU COMPLETELY ON THIS! Every game, I can’t go one time without saying “Oh, CJ…” when he puts up one of his crazy shots. What amazes me is how good he can be sometimes, and other times, how CRAZILY pissed off he can make me. I will agree with most Jazz fans in saying that when he’s hot, he’s probably the one of the most valuable sixth men in the league. But the problem is that he’s not hot very consistently. Are the unsure amount of minutes (Kyle) to blame? Possibly, but I don’t think completely. I think that one of his biggest problems is that he wants to be a “hero”. At least, that’s what it seems like to me. He wants to be the guy to make that game changing shot or to make that highlight play. I’m always freaking out when he has the ball in the clutch, because I don’t trust him. It’s kind of the same with AK. CJ will make a big shot and then run down the court and throw it up again, and miss completely. And did you realize that a few days after D-Will got his blue mouth guard, CJ got a blue one too? The only other person on the team with a blue mouth guard. He’s just not consistent, and unfortunately, AK’s getting as bad as him.
