Shut Up About the Past!
Posted by: Splendid Jimmy on February 26th, 2011
The author's views are entirely his or her own and may not reflect the views of the Utah Jazz.Everybody please stop commenting about how great we were when we had D-Will, Boozer, Matthews, Korver etc. We weren’t that good! We were never that good! There were so many flaws on those teams of past years, and it seems like most Jazz fans have forgotten about that.
We constantly got man-handled by the Lakers, and the year we made it to the WCF was a fluke. People forget that we faced the mediocre Warriors who were only in the Semifinals because they had the perfect team to defeat Dallas that year. I guarantee that if we would have faced Dallas in the semis, we would have won maximum 1 game. I’ve never considered going to the WCF in 2007 as a great achievement, and you shouldn’t either. We were just at the right place at the right time.
Everybody always whined that the team needed change. “We need to blow up the team, Boozer’s Defense, Korver’s Defense, Brewer’s shot, Deron’s attitude blah blah blah blah”. Lets face the facts Jazz Fans. We were never a real contender and a The team we had this season, and the teams of the past 4 years or so, were never championship teams. We were at least 2 more pieces away from being legit.
KOC did what was best for the team. He is one of the most respected GM’s in the NBA for a reason. Remember, this trade wasn’t done to win a championship THIS YEAR. This team was going nowhere and everybody knew it.
Good Job KOC! Go Jazz!
*On a side note, can we stop calling ourselves “Jazz Nation”? The whole “Nation” thing is way overused with sports teams.

Sorry about the typo on the 3rd paragraph.
Completely agree on letting the past go
Iagree whole heartedly the past is history. lets live and support the Jazz here and now, and cheer them on into the future, trades are over for this year and now is the time to get behind our team.
I actually liked the trade, and I agree that our teams of the past didn’t have that “it” factor. I do not agree on your “Jazz Nation” comment. Yes, it is used a lot, but it gives Jazz fans a rallying point. I personally don’t use the term, but I don’t mind that others do. Fans seem to rally around little quipps that Harpring says, and it makes them happy. I say, let them do it. No harm there.
@Joseph I’m just saying I wish we could think of something more creative than “Jazz Nation”. We’re a unique team in a unique city. We can do better than that.
In that, I completely agree with you. But until then, I say whatever unites us, can’t be all bad.
Matt is making the effort. Jazz Nation is fine, until something better comes along.
Jazzaholic
I knew the side note would be unpopular. It’s not a big deal anyway. Just a thought.
Go Jazz Nation! Lol
“We weren’t that good! We were never that good! There were so many flaws on those teams of past years”
I thought we started rebuilding since 2001. And If we are a bunch of idiots to believe what you say, then excuse me, but whose fault is it? KOC rebuild a team for the past 10 yrs that had “so many flaws” and “were never that good?”
If we believe your argument, which is completely flaw, then we’ve got the short end of the stick as fans and he is a terrible GM. I could point the finger to one person and that’s KOC.
“KOC did what was best for the team. He is one of the most respected GM’s in the NBA for a reason. Remember, this trade wasn’t done to win a championship THIS YEAR. This team was going nowhere and everybody knew it.”
Are you serious? Have you no basketball IQ sir?
The guy that gave AK a $17 mill per year for the past 5 yrs?
If that colossal mistake did not happen, then Jazz would have had the $, to sign another player (C) and compete for the championship. Jazz was 1 piece away from making it. And because of the terrible mistake, it cost the Jazz a chance to compete for the title. Your post is garbage.
So your argument goes down the drain. Because you say KOC did a “good job” but at the same time you say that the team for the past several years was “never that good” and “had so many flaws”
Which was is it dude?
Learn to think logically before you type and contradict the &*#@ out of yourself.
This is a garbage team, and it’s 2001 all over. Perhaps KOC should give AK, another 5 yr, $87 mill contract, and rebuild again.
This is a joke. KOC should be fired…. yesterday!
Alban, I think your the one who needs to wake up man. You talk about mistakes, but there is no one who is 100 percent when making decisions about who to contract and who to dump.
Was there any way to know that AK’s body could not keep up with his recless abandon and All Star perfomance that was shown when he was younger. Nope. So we gambled that he could stay healthy like a John Stockton or Karl Malone who are actually exceptions to the rule. Not many can claim so many games with so few real injuries. Did it pay off, maybe not for what was paid, but how was anyone to know?
We gambled on a Boozer, who is great on the offensive end, and in rare times of anger was able to put some effort on the defensive side of the court. Did he pan out. Guessing not, injury prone, no defense, no ring, and no loyalty. But we had to take that gamble. Personally glad he is gone. Will lose every night with players who put it all on the court and do their best, rather than support a up and down player who had extreme talent but reminded me of Ostratag.
Mathews, or Brewer. Again exceptions to the rule. Many Draft picks dont make it on a team let alone play with their skill levels and such. Could we have seen what you supposedly seen and paid them big bucks rather than money for Boozer or AK? A gamble was made and again it did not pay off. But KOC is not you and its too bad that he didnt have your 100 percent knowledge of these players..
But if you look at it, tell me how many teams have we been to the Playoffs Consistantly year after year? How many others have blown it year after year? If you look at the Jazz track record, we have been a B+ for quite some time. Would we prefer to be an A+ team, heck yes. Overall its been an exciting ride, and I will take B+ over many of the teams in the east any day.
Look around man, overall, there is a reason that the Utah Jazz has one ot the best fan bases in the league even for such a small market. Its because even though we have not gotten a ring, its been an exciting enough ride to keep us hoping that this season will be the one we finally get over that hump. KOC and staff continue to keep it interesting, and one day they will get it right. I think they may be on the cusp of getting us there now, but only time can tell.
Only two teams can make it to the playoffs for the title man. The top ten teams in the west are consistantly in the top 14 in the league, and we are consitantly in that group. Cry if you want, but it could always be worse. You could be one of the many teams in the east who are happy to make the playoffs with a less than 50 percent win ratio. We could be one of the teams who barely make 30 wins in a season. We could be a lottery team every year and lose that all star player every 4 yrs because we dont have the supporting cast to keep them.
Our team, will one day make it all the way to the end. I will be the Fan who can say he stuck with them, through the ups and the downs. Do I get frustrated at times, yes. But I see things to be happy about, and the pieces are falling in place. Maybe not for this season, but give them time to settle in and gather a couple more pieces. I can see it coming together, and I will support the players we have. Watch them. They are all out there playing hard, and laying it on the court. That is something that has been missing. Its something to get excited about. I wont lay blame, but I will say that its giving me hope.
I am a Jazz fan. I am not 100 percent all the time, or even most of the time. I try not to fault others who are not as well, because no one can be 100 percent. I wish we won a ring every year. But I am happy to see us in the playoffs most years, and grateful we are usually over 50 percent in the win catagory. So take your 100 percent never make a mistake butts over to the Bulls, or La, or Miami. Then next year change again, when they do something you dont like. Its time to stop crying over the past. Surprised I havent seen I miss John Stockton posted with all this living in the past stuff going on… Its time to live for now, to cheer on our team, and show our support. One day we will get to where we want to be.
If you cannot do that, then I suggest you change your team nightly. You should always be able to pick a winner that way. Then you will always be happy. Except for that one night every once in a while, that even the best lose.. Oh, I forgot, your 100 percent correct all the time.
I thought we all decided that Alban was going to be a bulls fan? Why is he still here?
Look Patrick,
You can be happy with making the playoffs year after year, and with B+ rating that you claim. You can also try to find every excuse on book for the GM and the colossal mistake that he has made with AK. Perhaps you are happy with wasted draft picks also over the past 10 years, one that comes to mind is drafting Raul Lopez instead of Tony Parker. I can go on and on, but the fact remain, Ten years and we are back to 2001. You can ask any non-bias basketball fan, about this team and they will grade it a descent D+ grade.
Look, there’s fans that wanna criticize the team, especially management and GM, and rightly so. Any team would have fired the GM yrs ago, but Jazz has stuck with a deadbeat. That don’t make ‘em less, and you don’t gotta spew your crap,”If you cannot do that, then I suggest you change your team nightly.”
Who are you to tell me who to cheer for? Who the hell are you to tell us fans, that has every reason to criticize this management that we should just cheer and be happy, otherwise take a hike?
This is not the LD Jazz. This is Utah Jazz. Yeah UTAH JAZZ! think about it.
@ Alban: “So your argument goes down the drain. Because you say KOC did a “good job” but at the same time you say that the team for the past several years was “never that good” and “had so many flaws”
Did you actually read the post, or are you a moron? He is doing what is best for the team NOW. Do you get it? I said he did a good job NOW! I never said that the contract for AK was a good idea, or that I liked any of the moves he made in the past. I’m saying that he did what was best for the team THIS YEAR, not last year, not in 2001. Please read and learn to comprehend posts before you make yourself look an idiot.
I bet you’re one of those people that loves to bring up AK’s contract into every Jazz conversation. If you look at almost every GM in the league, they have given someone a bad contract at one point or another. Guess what? That hasn’t happened again. Remember that KOC wasn’t the only GM that was willing to give AK that much money at that point in his career. There were teams lining up to overpay him.
“I thought we started rebuilding since 2001″
Yes, and it’s time to rebuild again. That was the whole point of this post. MOVE ON! That was a whole decade ago and rebuilding processes happen more than once in a franchise. Stop living in the past Alban.
Nobody on this website likes you.
Jimmy,
To be homest when a post on a Utah Jazz site starts with “Shut up about the past” I probably am not going to take the time to carefully read it. The Utah Jazz are all about tradition and preserving the image they have tried for over 30 years to maintain. However you have every right to share your ideas and thoughts and I am sure there are many that agree with you. Of course people forget about the bad parts of the past and cling to the good, that is how we survive. But the point I wanted to make was that Alban also has the right to say what he thinks and your statement that “Nobody on this website likes you.” is out of place. You have no idea what the 1,000’s of people on this site like, most of them never even write.
Deb: IF you don’t want to take to read the whole post, fine It doesn’t matter much. I understand some people might not like how aggressive I can come off. Understand that it is because I’m passionate, and sometimes I let the words just flow from my fingers.
Look at all of Alban’s posts. I’m not exaggerating when I say that nobody likes him because he’s a troll.
