Suggestions for the Site?

Posted by: Splendid Jimmy on March 30th, 2011

The author's views are entirely his or her own and may not reflect the views of the Utah Jazz.

I would like it if users had an inbox/outbox to see when other people responded to one’s comments or blog posts.  Maybe it’s not a big deal right now, but if the site continues to grow, it might be in the future.

Maybe a post like this has been put up before, but I haven’t seen one, so here it is.  What do you would make this website better?

Well, I’ve given several suggestions for this site. You just haven’t seen them because they were a long time ago. Here’s one: http://www.utahjazz360.com/alienator345/reputation/

I like the idea of attaining ranks and gaining more privileges of doing things as you get higher. I like the blogs to be arranged in such a way that the most recent blog listed is the one that has most recently been commented on and not the one that has just been created so that the subject doesn’t die after a day because it got demoted to page 2 due to new blogs being created. I think there should be a better rating system that people pay attention to. I think that you should have the ability to rate comments as well and not just the original blog. I think there should be the ability to send and receive private messages.

I could go on, but there’s a few of my many suggestions for this site. The problem is that the managers of this site seem very adamant on doing absolutely nothing to change or improve the site, so discussions on what should be done are almost useless because nothing’s going to change any time soon if at all.

I think the problems lie in some part due to the Jazz team itself and it’s losing ways this year. It seems like many the recent posts either are negative towards the team, players, coaches and managements or they are full of blinders on, positive PR spin. I just don’t think alot of people care right now. I believe that the moderators of this site are trying to keep it as simple as possible so everyone feels like they are able to write and respond. Do we end up with some less than stellaer posts and comments, sure we do, but I don’t think there are any requirements to buy a Jazz ticket or to be a fan.
More publicity and acknowledgement from the Jazz would help, but to be honest I don’t this site is on the top of the “to fix” list of the Jazz right now.

  4. Spencer says:

I totally agree with Adam. I want the popular topics to stay relevant, it so annoying to try and remember to check on the stuff I have commented on.

  5. Patrick says:

I think it should be a tab you can change back and forth from like on Facebook. Biggest news and most recent. That way you would be able to keep track of the new posts that came in, and the most recent posts so that you can keep track of the more popular posts.

  6. Patrick says:

Wow, amazing what you find once you open your eyes. There are tabs at the top of the page in yellow. Most recent, most popular, most commented. The sad thing is there it still wont help with what your talking about.

Maybe if they gave you a flag. You could tab the posts your interested in, and that can pop up in a personal most interested, rather than everyone elses most viewed. So you tag the ones you want to pay attention to, and under that tab you only see the discussions you want to follow. Or have I missed that too?

  7. Patrick says:

Wow, I guess the only thing missing is the little thing that shows if someone has replied to your post. Learning so much today, thanks guys. If there is something you want to keep track of you add it to your favorites, by clicking the tab at the end of the story. Under the my account tab at the top, you can look up those favorites. Its just as easy to erase them when your done.. By simply looking to see how many posts there are you will know if someone has added something. Unless your keeping track of a lot of things..

I still like the idea of seeing if someone is actually replying to your addition or not. Either way, thanks, learned some things I didnt know about the site today..

  8. JC says:

This is a good list, seems like they did some implementation of what was talked about before but not all. I hope they can get some of these other requests into the site, then it would be a Jazz-Juggernaut of power.

*I admit, I just wanted to use Juggernaut in a statement*

  9. Adam says:

Patrick, there are those tabs up there. Problem is that the “highest rated” tab is kinda crap because no one really rates the posts. And no one ever really looks at the most comments and most viewed tabs, so those are pretty much just decoration. Favorites never get tabbed, at least not by me. The only blogs ever commented on are the ones in most recent and after a few days at longest it gets replenished. Blogs on page 2 never get comments. So some of the tools are there, but they aren’t really done well and something needs to be done to revise them. Like I said, I think if a blog gets commented on it should move to the top of the list again so that popular blogs stay for longer. Mimicking facebook by sending you a notification when people have commented on your blog or commented on a blog that you commented on is a great idea. That’s why facebook works so well.

  10. TACOREV says:

Anyone else think it’s funny that the most viewed topics are the Jazz Dancer diaries?

  11. JC says:

Yes, I do think it’s hilarious.

  12. French Dude says:

Why i’m not surprised with that…………… Maybe because i never miss one ( but i really miss Jocelyn ) :)

  13. KCJones says:

#1 – filter to sort by posts where you’ve commented, and there’s a new comment after yours and you haven’t viewed it yet.

#2 – a button to ban Alby from the site forever.

#3 – a ‘Like’ button to share a post on facebook

#4 – make it so you can edit your comments (jazzbots seem to be able to do this)

    #5 – simpler interface for iphone/android browsers

    #6 – iphone/android app

The funny thing is I’m a web developer/programmer and could actually do all of the above

  14. Colten Davis says:

Also, lets make the site R rated. When I drop an F bomb, I want all to read, not just see #%#$%!#$*$&, it makes me frutsterated.

  15. James Seaman says:

I, too, think the number of hits on the Jazz Dancer Diaries is funny. Not at all surprising, either.

@Colten: save it for the bar.

  16. Fan says:

Part of the reason the Jazz dancer blogs have so many hits, besides the fact that probably about 95% of the people that read these blogs are men, is that it is featured on the opening page of http://www.utahjazz.com, I don’t think alot of people take the time to take the extra step to go to this specific site. ALso any of the posts that the Jazz choose to promote and put on Facebook have many more hits. It is about exposure.
    @Adam
I think part of the problem with keeping blogs on the first page based on number of comments is that sometimes half or more of those comments are from the person writing the blog. It would easy to manipulate and I don’t think the Jazz have the manpower to have someone check each post to determine where the comments are coming from. If it were possible to count only the comments from someone other than the writer then it might be a good idea.

  17. David says:

a link to kid cudi videos

  18. Justin says:

The site should email us if someone responds to a post / thread we are participating in. This way we can stay engaged.

  19. Landon J says:

I would love to have this site become more Facebook style. You could easily comment on anything and instead of the “Like” button, you could have “agree” and “disagree” button. And a notification feature would let you know whenever somebody did that.

And I could really use a UJ360 App for my iPhone. Heck, I’m ready just to create one myself!
