Thoughts on John Henson?

Currently, it looks like we won’t have a first round draft pick. But, things could change. The Warriors might get unlucky in the lottery, or the Jazz could always make a trade. With this in mind, I’m wondering what Jazz fans think of North Carolina’s John Henson. He’s a very athletic 6′11 power forward, with a 7′4 wingspan. He’s known for being a tremendous shot blocker (about 3 per game), and rebounder (around 10 a game). He reminds me a little bit of a slimmer version of OKC’s Ibaka. Like Favors, I think he has a chance to be a game changer defensively, and I love the idea of the two playing alongside one another. Obviously, right now, we are loaded in our frontcourt, but if the Jazz end up dealing either Jefferson or Millsap this summer, we will want a fourth big.

Personally, I love the idea of having two extremely long, defensive minded big men on the court at the same time (Favors at center, and Henson at power forward). A four man frontcourt of Favors, Henson, Kanter, and either Jefferson OR Millsap, is an exciting prospect.

I’m just wondering what Jazz fans think of John Henson?

I really really really am opposed to us taking a big man in this draft. If we deal Jefferson or Millsap, we will still be fine in the frontcourt with Kanter, Favors, and either Millsap or Jefferson (whichever one we don’t trade). Our priority needs to be either guard position or small forward. If we end up with two picks in this draft, we can draft a fourth big with the later pick or grab one in free agency. If we pick John Henson, it would be a very dumb move for the Jazz.

I did not see his name on the draft boards. He may be one to invite to training camp. As a second rounder I would trust KOC. And no it would not be a very dumb move for the Jazz..

I like Henson, he grew on me as the season went on. Id rather the jazz go young back up PF/C or the back up PG, and use trading Al to get a high quality SF or PG. Id want experience at those positions and youth behind Favors and Millsap or behind new starting PG.

Defense and rebounding translates to the NBA, jazz get that 8th pick they should look hard at him. Especially if they trade Millsap as well.

  4. Draft Express has him going in the top ten.

NBA.Draft Net has him going top twenty.

Most mocks have him in the 12-18 range.

Not sure where the ESPN mock has him currently going.

  5. ESPN has him ranked 13th overall.

I think he might be the steal of the draft.

  6. Adam: I guess my thinking was we trade Jefferson or Millsap for that point guard or small forward we need, and then use the draft to replace the big we lose.

I remember last season I fell in love with Alec Burks, and I wrote a lengthy post on this site saying why I thought the Jazz should draft him. I guess Henson (and Marshall) are my favorites this year.

  7. He will get drafted BUT we have seen other skinny PF come out of NC lately and not do anything!

Ed Davis, Brandon Wright and they have not done anything. I do not think it is a risk i am willing to take. If we get another big man I want a 7 footer. Zeller or Leonard but if we do not get them then a PG or SF. I just think we can wait. Even though people do not think so Evans can play 4.

A 2nd Lineup of PG, Burks, Carrol, Evans, Kanter they would run the crap out of people and if we could pick up another PG and slide Harris to the 2nd unit it would be dynamite

  8. I certainly wouldn’t mind seeing Evans play more.

Yes, another big thats what exactly we need….

  10. You can’t be tunnel vision when it comes to the draft…or you end up drafting Sam Bowie when Michael Jordan is available.

You ALWAYS draft best player available, and never draft for need. Recent example: The Jazz draft Enes Kanter even though they already had Jefferson, Millsap, and Favors.

What do you think of Perry Jones?? There is high probability that he will blow up, but maybe he can be a a quality 3?? I would like some semblance of the big lineup, but with no one out of position. Its hit or miss though.

  12. I don’t like Perry Jones. He’s a tweener, and lacks a true position. I’ve also read that he doesn’t play very hard. I like players whom you know exactly what your going to get from. If you draft Henson, he’s going to block shots, and grab rebounds for you…guaranteed. If you draft Marshall, he’s going to make plays, and dish out a bunch of assists. I’m not sure what Perry Jones is going to give you, other then potential.

  13. going to get from *them* …sorry

I just read on slcdunk that AK might be still be a real possibility for the Jazz. Don’t bring back CJ, Howard, and get rid of Bell, I would love to have AK back at a decent price, around 6-8mil. Honestly, I think if Millsap can’t be a bench player, we need to trade him for high trade value and look to get what we need. Al, good player, good guy, not right for the team. I’m still in the air about Harris, although I would really like the Jazz to get Dragic. I’ve been mentioning his name for over a year and half now.

  15. Gerald says:

I think we have good players that have trade value, just not the right combination of players, especially with Hayward and Favors. The Jazz need to focus on them and go, what can we get to build this team. I really think Harris can do with Favors and Hayward…the others…toss-up!

  16. Gerald says:

One more, I think Harris could work with AK also. AK I think can work with a lot of players, and I would kill to have a defense of Hayward, AK, and Favors!

  17. The only thing I worry about with Tweeners and Corbin is he is an idiot and even though he does not want to play the 4 he would stick him at the 4 just because. You need a coach with an open mind to stick a 6′11 guy at the 3. Kinda like Austin Daye with the Pistons. They try to put him at the 4 but he can not guard the 4 and he gets banged around. Right team he could be brilliant..

Terrance Ross I would not mind either…

John Henson? I’ve always loved the Muppets.

Or is he the announcer for ‘Wipeout’?

  19. a legit 7 footer with wingspan , athletic ability , is exactly what we need. someone who can just come in like a chandler and block shots and rebounds would take the jazz to another level. IMO we should try for that and use millsap as trade if this team truly wants to compete. Sap has heart and has been the soul of the jazz for some time, but that is slowly changing. I dont think after waiting behind other players this whole time he is going to love coming off the bench behind a 3rd year player. Beyond that, as Sap ages he loses athletic ability that was really the only thing giving him opportunities to compete with taller low post guys. I think the future for him will be on the down hill slope from now as he ages. Love him but using the value now would be smart. His contract is also appealing to teams. We need 1 more year of Big Al if we dont get a legit scorer on the perimeter. Big Al’s contract makes it tough to move him.

  20. unless we pick up Elijah Saps brother who is the 3rd leading scorer for D league. That would be nice having brothers to build chemistry.

  21. … plus, he did a great job with those Muppets movies.

  22. Big Al contract makes it perfect to move him. 2013 is going to be another free agent frenzy which means teams are going to want to have cap space.. Plus their is not teams with a surplus of big men… We have 4/5 if you count Evans which I do.
